larryfulkerson -> RE: Directive 21 ( mod of FITE ) (11/17/2009 1:08:33 PM)

Here's a situation that's too cool not to take advantage of. Here briefly I'm guessing that there's more Axis units than there are Soviet units and that implies that the longer the front lines the better since I might be able to outflank them easier when I have more units. It just depends on what kinds of units are counted since forts and coastal artillery and garrisons can't move and aren't of much use except locally. I did an analysis of the Axis side one time long ago and I can't remember the numbers now. It's a chore to figure out the actual number of combat units so I don't relish doing it again however it seems to me that 60% of the numbers are combat units for both sides so I'm guessing that the Axis is still in the majority.

The Soviets have lost their shock disadvantage in the air so I'm guessing that the PO will start moving aircraft toward the front reguardless of their condition. That could be to my advantage since the PO doesn't consider the health of the unit when assigning missions. The Soviet units tend to get used until they're killed. So if I keep my units in relative good health then perhaps the combats will tend to eventuate to my favor.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Directive 21 turn 5 (11/20/2009 6:43:12 AM)

Turn 4 is over and I gained some hexes in Riga and opened the road to Minsk. Here's the north one third of the front lines:

Here's the turn 4 moves minimovie. By the way, my careful calculations indicate that 36 Soviet units were destroyed in turn 4. Again I have no idea what kind and how many of each were destroyed. Note to self: really now...keep track of what gets destroyed so you can report it in your AAR.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Directive 21 turn 5 (11/22/2009 1:07:40 AM)

I lost the 111th Inf regiment in turn 5 ( it evaporated in combat ) and now in turn 6 I find out that it's reconstituting in turn 13. That's 8 turns to reconstitute which equals a month in game time. I'm wondering if one month was chosen for a specific reason or was it arbitrary ( chosen out of thin air ).

Steve, Rick, one of you guys know the answer?

Reconstitutions are anywhere from 1-4 weeks after evaporation. I think the exact amount of time it takes is random though.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Directive 21 turn 5 (11/22/2009 2:02:10 AM)

I found out by rude example that the Finnish units don't reconstitute. This picture says Axis and not Finn but it is a Finnish unit, believe me.

[image]local://upfiles/16287/CA5698BAA2D94793883C158DC08B3573.gif[/image]

EDIT: according to Rick ( one of the designers of D21 ) they actually DO reconstitute, it's just that it takes a turn or two to register on the game engine and get the unit scheduled to do so.

Thanks Rick dude.

The Finnish units will reconstitute. They just do not reconstitute as fast and it may take a turn or two before that unit gets scheduled.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Directive 21 turn 6 (11/22/2009 4:55:17 AM)

Turn 6 is over. I got an early turn ending after the first round and so didn't make as much progress as I had hoped I would make. Anyway, I found something interesting that Elmer does.

As I was making my cross-river assaults just south of Riga there was an incident where I left one of MY riverbank hexes open and in his turn to move Elmer moved some of his river roadblock units into MY territory and right into my killing fields. No human opponent would do that I'm pretty sure. But Elmer has orders from Stalin and they do or die in Elmer world. You might keep this in mind when you need to destroy some units easily.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Directive 21 turn 6 (11/22/2009 4:58:25 AM)

Here's the losses for both sides as of the end of turn 6: Note that the Axis has lost about as many infantry squads as the Soviets. This must be due to the combats that took place on the Stalin Line way down south. There would have been many many more but Elmer didn't park very much arty on the Stalin Line thank goodness. Note that the rate of production of Soviet units is less for every category since I captured Minsk.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Directive 21 turn 7 (11/22/2009 6:24:07 PM)

I've gotten myself into big trouble. Either that or I've made a breakthrough of sorts. Here's the situation on the Murmansk front. I divided a couple of my regiments and moved them through the Soviet lines and they will either get cut off and killed or maybe I can displace that arty unit and attack the Soviet division and make it move south and or east and either way I gain that hex. Maybe.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Directive 21 turn 7 (11/22/2009 6:34:00 PM)

Here's the situation just south of Murmansk. I've run into a substantial roadblock and I've been doing some probing with my tank unit and not getting anywhere. I hate to attack that stack with my infantry since he has some arty entrenched in that hex and attacking it means lots of losses. I'm thinking I should rest my tank unit and give it a go again. Maybe.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Directive 21 turn 7 (11/23/2009 12:48:17 AM)

It seems that Elmer has what is left of his air force up and running and taking horrendous losses. Several times his longest range bombers have bombarded my ground units taking huge losses and no significant Axis losses. And when his interdiction aircraft do their thing my fighters shoot down large groups of the attackers. The air war is ongoing and is going well for the Axis so far. The Soviet production rates are higher than the Axis however and eventually, perhaps around T15 or so, the Soviets will have more fighters than the Axis and the air war will slowly turn sour for the Axis.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Directive 21 turn 7 (11/23/2009 12:58:43 AM)

Here's the situation just north of Leningrad. Elmer has mishandled his units, left a hole open and I took advantage of it and drove south and then east and got behind the Soviet defenders and it looks like I might be able to make some headway with the Finnish troops. We'll see.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Directive 21 turn 7 (11/23/2009 1:16:06 AM)

Here's a zoomed-out look at the Kiev area. I have run my recon scout to the east so far I found the Kiev defenders. It has the look of a fortress and I'm thinking I'm going to have to attack this place from both sides at the same time to lessen the losses.

Also, you can see the scattered and fragmented look of my armies. We've been fighting for so long some of my units are getting into the single digit range on their supply and I have to drop them off to refuel by the side of the road. I'm thinking that if I keep my units in good supply my odds increase since the Soviet units generally don't rest after reconstitution but instead are thrust onto the battlefield as-is and as a result they will start showing up on the front lines with cherry-red health and will be easier to kill.
