How are you planning to phase your offensives and what is your intention in the phasing? Simultaneity would be effective and simplest but a Bagration-like staggered phasing might be more effective, particularly as two of those are pure ground offensives and two would draw naval reactions if properly constituted.

I am hoping for a strategic simultaneous assault. The time it takes to march overland in Burma means that offensive has defacto already started with the Chinese move on Katha and Lashio thats phase 1. Phase 2 Bur Corps marching on katha/Schwebo is also underway but is low key. Phase 3 the Armour and Heavy Inf Divs march on the Burmese plain is almost readty to kick off and he probably knows its coming from recent fights at Chittagong. I have a 6 month window in Burma before the nextmonsoon and I plan to make the most of it.4 In Australia the armoured overland assault supported by every 4E I can find and as many B26's as well will lauch in a few days de facto he will become aware of this attack quite early. The coastal advance by my Australian and US Heavy Inf Divs will kick off in about 5 days after the armour is on the move. So both of the land offensives strategically are timesd to launch at the same time. In China its pure reaction I more or less ignore China until I am forced to pay attention to it - I had agreed with PZB we wouldnt make China a big deal but it appears his definition of big deal is different to mine well steps are being taken if he wants to play that game I can cope with it especially if I am pressuring Burma at the same time. CENTPAC is the tricky one with 11 Battleships, 6 CV's and 2 CVE's plus screen I dont mind a stand up fight but I dont really want one - I want to take my objectives with minimum of fuss I am probably more sensitive to losses in BB's given the bad PH roll. I have forces prepping for PM and Milne Bay so if I get the chance I may land in his rear

If I was PZB I would bug out now and leave me crushing air if he stands and fights he will lose in Australia. I have 6 lvl 6+ AF's in range with lots of Fighters and Bombers and I am willing to fight an attrition batle. PT Boats to protect my ports. 2nd Aus Army in the inland has 2,000 AV mostly armour or motorised units. 1st Aus Army on the coast has 3,000 AV mostly infantry. I HOPE he has committed enough soldiers to Aus to stop me dead..... p.s. I have about 1,000 AV in reserve at Aukland out of the way prepping for New Guinea targets to allow to keep on him

OK spent a few turns re orging the air support for the Attack on Australia. I am concentrating my B17's and B24's in theatre supported by large numbers of B25 Charlies and Bravos and a few Sqns of B26's My care over my bombers is paying off as I will have a lot of them when the time comes and a few Sqns of P38's and lost of P39's/P40's to back them Give it a few more days and I will be ready

Strategically I have 5 main axis of advance underway in two widely far apart theatres My objectives. 1. Gain some ground and get him focussed on pulling troops into those theatres 2. Get my pilots some real combat experience and attrit his pilots. The real attack is quietly prepping in the background. The real attack is on CENTPAC retake the line islands and take PM/Milne Bay while PZB still has large forces in Australia so I can start to shred his merchant marine while he evacs OR force him to commit KB to preserve his transports at which point the area is flooded with S Boats, PT Boats and LBA. My goal is to attrit his merchant marine by making him evac, attrit SC Assets that are more dangerous than carriers late war when I go against hard targets, armamenent points etc so he doesnt amalgamate a huge surplus and try and get the master of the counterattack back on the defensive

Andy, could you give some updated insight into the math you use to estimate what the max limit you can support on each axis? The rules give little help in this area. This is what I have gleaned from this thread and others: I have heard reference that a standard Allied division requires 50 tons of supply per day (so 1500 per month). The base must have greater than 3 times the supply required to send supply. Max loss during transfer is capped at 20%. So, a base must have 1,5001.23 + its own supply needs * 2 (full supply) to support a single division? Using this math, I get 5,400 per division + the base's own full supply needs. From section 15.7: Supplies over 5000 + ( ( port + airfield size ) * ( port + airfield size ) * 3000 ) suffers spoilage. So, given some margin for error, any base that has an airfield size 4 looks like it should be able to stockpile adequate supplies to support 3 divisions + corps troops. �@ �@

My rule of thumb 1. Chinese Armies not in supply they get what they can... 2. Imphal thrust Imphal can supply 150 x 7 at present so about 1050 per day or about 30,000 per month at peak. Silchar can supply about 250 x 8 or about 2,000 per day or 60,000 per month but its one hex further away so lets allow a 50% wastage to that bases contribution So a max supply on the front fo 60,000 per month Take off say 10,000 for air and construction etc So a rough number I can work with is 50,000 An allied 'Div on combat ops uses about 4,000 tonnes of supply per month excluding wastage and loss the further from my supply head I get. So operating in Imphal itself I could supply say 8 Divs plus supporting HQ, Arty etc and still be building up a small reserve....over time (after the monsoon) Or 4 Divs with no support during the monsoon... Every hex I move away from Imphal will increase my wastage the first hex not to bad because of a road but my rule of thumb is 50% per hex thereafter for Jungle hexes so Imphal to Katha has 2 horrible hexes with no road and a major river so 4000 x 150% x 150% = say 9,000 supply per month per Div so post monsoon with no additional Corps troops or garriosn forces I could operate 3 - 4 Divs on the Assam front with a little capability to allow a small AF to operate in Burma and some suppply for the Chinese I wouldnt take the admin risk of much more for on this fornt.

p.s. before someone says impossible to much to early remember I prioritised the building up the infrastructure in this area from day 1 with 20:20 hindsight in prep for this attack and I used most of the Burmese and Indian Engineers to do this.

A few problems on the Rochampton front. PZB tried to pull a retreat under fire via strat mode. I believe it was a genuine mistake so I have agreed to let him march out although it messes up my timetable pretty badly Please everyone note strat mode is not intended for being able to retreat under fire its a rear area re deployment tool do not try to use it to evac at the last possible second unless you are willing to take the risk of having your movement stalled. De facto rolling stock to move 50,000 men 200 miles is not easy to come by and 2 men with a fire and some telegraph poles (creating sherman hairpins) could have stalled the whole movement. PZB was unhappy with a mechanic that a single para squad could stop movement - in strat mode I think they could have !!!! Anyway everyone please note strat mode when enemy units are close = bad thing

Bollocks Major Admin messup by allied high command in Burma. As everyone knows I was planning on sending 2 Corps of 10 ish Divs accross the mountains to land in my enemies rear sustained out of Akyab, Chittagong and Cox Bazaar. So far so good. I must have had a brain fart somewhere I was sitting thinking to myself - hang on 10 Divs over no roads and jungle mountains thats bollocks. So I went back to recheck my numbers and sure enough I have made a mistake. OK so here it is Assume all bases are built to max they are close to it but need to get AF up another level. Assume all bases are fully supplied in the green and can be maintained as such. Assuming both of the above would result in a supply capacity for the 3 bases of about 230k supplies per month but thats misleading lets say my forces are attacking Magwe To maintain a 4,000 supply point Div there from the coast will cost 14,000 supply if maintained out of Akyab 50,000 supply if maintained out of either Cox Bazaar or Chittagong. Well the peak rating for those three bases are Akyab 27,000 per month Cox Bazaar 24,000 per month and Chittagon 230,000 per month So that means the max force I can maintain administratively before I open up Rangoon or the other routes is say 2 reinforced Divs from Akyab 4 from Chittagong and maybe 1 Bde Gp from Cox Bazzar Overall call it a single Corps of 5 Divs plus HQ and some support. My force is twice that - BUGGER I must have based my maths on non combat supply rating for Divs.... Noob mistake... My calcs indicate I can only sustain half the force I currently have on the march out of the coastal bases. (Inland Bases are supporting the 3 Bur Corps Divs driving on Mandalay) I will need to order XV Corps back to base as well as most of the heavy Arty. I am not a happy camper today....

Was the supply equation fixed? I recall several people mentioning earlier in this AAR that supplying massive forces in Burma - even through the jungle - was quite easy. It would be disappointing if you hobble your forces without need. Wouldn't it be possible to advance with all available forces, carefully watch the supply situation and disengage some of them if it turns out the whole force can not be supplied?

Its a matter of style even if I can maintain them all because of an interaction of factors in the game engine I wont do it. My calcs indicate if I can keep Akyab in the Green I can get 5 Divs through the mountains so thats what I will do...

Same analysis supporting BUR CORPS As you can see at present my supply net can sustain 1 Div from Imphal and 2 from Silchar and Dimapur As one of the Divs in this attack is the lightend 17th Div on mule pack and the other is my Burmese Div I feel able to support an Indpt Bde as well but then most of my C47's are ont his route as well In temrs of Corps troops I have a Regt of Stuarts, a Regt of Mountain Guns and a composte AA Regt So this is really light on support weapons I thought pretty carefully about how much force was credible to commit [image]local://upfiles/11987/0108D75947644B5ABF6A685A1F07075A.jpg[/image]

Getting Dimapur and Kohima full developed would allow maybe another 2 - 3 Divs in this theatre more C47's maybe another 1 or 2 butt hats probably the limit but I only had so many engineering assets i.e. the max force I think can sustain out of Imphal even if all bases is full developed to cross the Irrawaddy without a good recieving Air Filed is about 8 Divs absoulute max or 5 or 6 on land supply excluding all corps and army level support troops

Sure, you can blow up, say, a half mile of track, but a rail repair crew can lay that much track again in a few hours if its on the ball. They were laying 20-40 miles of track a day when they build the trans-continental railroad and that includes grading, and was done with 1870s technology. So worst case you might delay a some trains by a few hours, but you certainly wouldn't send everybody back to their original embarkation station and unload them all.
