Andy Mac -> RE: Operation Privateer (7/19/2010 12:11:12 AM)

In total I have currently got 11 active RAF Bomber Sqns in 2 RAF Groups with a total of 36 Wellingtons, 28 Hudsons, 60 Blenheim IV's and 15 Liberator II's

I also have 3 reserve RAF Sqns with Audax and Lysanders in training

In reserve I have 5 Wellingtons, 20 Hudsons and 50 Blenheims plus 8 Beauforts

So about 140 active front line aircraft with about 80 reserve aircraft thats really marginal % for keeping 11 Sqns operational

Ideally I would want 100% reserves in the pool for a sustainable offensive

Guard your bombers like GOLD DUST especially the British ones

Too late, PzB has torched all my Blenheim IVs already. The only way to guard them is not to use them. The current routines mean you WILL get unescorted raids, and if there is a defencive fighter presence they will fall like flies.

Andy Mac -> RE: Operation Privateer (7/19/2010 12:16:17 AM)

Oh and their are 2 RAAF Sqns of 24 Hudsons from a seperate pool in Ceylon and RAF Sqns with Vengeance Dive Bombers as well

So in total I have 16 frontline RAF and RAAF Sqns plus 3 RAF Sqns acting as training sqns

Andy

Andy Mac -> RE: Operation Privateer (7/19/2010 12:16:57 AM)

You need to keep them back until you need them commit them early is to lose them !!!

traskott -> RE: Operation Privateer (7/19/2010 9:49:44 AM)

chssss.... don't said it where every JFB can read it !!! [;)]

Pufff.....Looks like the Allied is very limited throught 1942 and 1943....He won't be able to launch a sustained offensive til 44...

EUBanana -> RE: Operation Privateer (7/19/2010 10:43:02 AM)

Looks like you got a LOT of Wellingtons. Guard them with your life, those bombers rock. Probably my fave bomber in the whole of 1942, even more so than B17s, as B17s service rating kinda ruins them. I pi$$ed them away in my game to my everlasting regret.

I'd keep the Wimpeys used almost exclusively for night bombing. Their bombload is the same as a B17, their service rating is infinitely better so they can bomb around the clock, their range is excellent - and night bombing in AE is pretty damn effective IMHO, especially in the face of enemy air superiority with packed airbases.

Unfortunately their durability is about the same as Mitchell, so they go down like flies if against sturdy CAP, and their replacement rate is measly. So, yeah... night bombing.

traskott -> RE: Operation Privateer (7/19/2010 10:47:42 AM)

You can always use the Blenhem as night bombers, too, isn't ?

I tend to use Blenheims for recon as their bombload is pansy, but yes, you certainly can.

I mention the Wellington especially as it is actually an extremely effective aircraft. Unlike the Blenheim. Over time it can put more bombs on target than a B17 can because it's service rating is much much better. The problem is that it gets shot down much more easily, so it begs to be used as a night bomber.

traskott -> RE: Operation Privateer (7/19/2010 1:09:34 PM)

Yeah, it's paiload is low, but, well...having 60 recon Blenheims is a bit...well...

Heh.

I think I only got about 40 or so total in my game, but they are being used almost exclusively for recon or naval search. They just suck as bombers, and I got a lot of recon to do and sea to search as my honourable opponent has Ceylon...

I like reconning every base in Ceylon every turn and the sea around Ceylon are alive with Blenheim search planes. Naval search in AE seems to be very hit and miss over six hexes or so, but if any ship shows up at Ceylon I want to know about it guaranteed as it's an open air prison until KB comes back from far away. There just aren't enough search planes to do that sort of recon, plus all the other stuff I need reconned in Bengal as well.

Tenth USAAF is present in strength as well though so I dont really need extra firepower, 50 odd heavies is plenty.

I´ve regretted from night bombing so far because the moment you start with it, your enemy is going to do the same probably. And at some point you end up with not only "stratosphere airwar in the Pacific" but also "night bombing only in the Pacific".[:D]

traskott -> RE: Operation Privateer (7/19/2010 4:58:06 PM)

xDD Everybody making nights bombings !!!

Heh, I know what you mean.

It's not the destroyed airframes that count, you dont get many of those night bombing. It's the damaged ones. Especially bad for the Allies with their terrible service ratings. You can damage half the base without too much trouble it seems.

My honourable opponent did a top notch job of suppressing Lunga (2 x P40 squadrons, 1 Beau squadron) by night bombing every night with about 40 Netties. Within 3 or 4 days 50% of the Allied fighters were damaged, and so long as he kept up bombing it stayed at about 50%, as he was damaging as fast as I was fixing at that point. Very effective, it seems to me, and it would be even more so if P38s or 4Es were on the receiving end.

traskott -> RE: Operation Privateer (7/19/2010 5:11:59 PM)

There is no N.F. at SWPAC ? (British get N.F. for the 21 RAF SQN, if I remember well )

Not atm. The Beaufighters on night fighter duty did 'OK' in that they got an average of one bomber a night.

But that really isn't a sufficient attrition rate to put the enemy off, or stop what is happening.

My cunning plans to counter it entail me doing it to him in return. [:D] My bombers fly farther than his and carry more bombs...

I wouldn´t want to imagine what my 150 4E bombers on New Guinea (all with 70-80 grdbmb skill) would achieve on a night bombing mission at normal range... say goodbye to Japanese airfields...

Andy Mac -> RE: Operation Privateer (7/20/2010 2:31:13 PM)

No sign of KB and all my ships got home in one piece.

So a learning experience for me but a good one reinforced some lessons I lost sight of.

In Australia its all about mopping up in the NW.

I am assembling my forces for an attack on Tennant creek mostly the Australian Panzer Corps.

In Burma my two thrusts are progressing.

Over the mountains its slow going fatigue is in the mid 20's for every unit and climbing, supplies are in the red for all forces so I may have over egged what force I can sustain in the Burmese mountains.

Burma Corps is close to Schwebo advanced elements of 3rd Carbiniers entered a day or two ago and tried a hasty attack that failed.

The units crossing the mountains are lucky to make 2 miles per day at present.

Andy Mac -> RE: Operation Privateer (7/20/2010 2:32:39 PM)

Ordering about half my sub wolfpack to Japanese waters the rest are tied down on picket duty around PH - I need the line islands back otherwise KB and other raiders have a direct route into my rear and vital West Coast Convoy routes.

I cannot really bypass them I am going to need to take them....

traskott -> RE: Operation Privateer (7/20/2010 5:29:48 PM)

Yeah! a KB raid over WC hurts.... I know it by experience.. [:D]

aprezto -> RE: Operation Privateer (7/20/2010 10:16:34 PM)

OT, Andy. As stated, PzB has landed on NZ. This has released the NZ 2nd Division. May I just say: wow. I've got to get it whereever, but when I do, kinda handy!

Andy Mac -> RE: Operation Privateer (7/20/2010 10:57:28 PM)

Glad you like it 10 Inf Bns plus all the trimmings including Div Cav makes for a nasty Div

Continued OT
I am curious, in my game, NZ was invaded about a month ago. I just upgraded to the Beta Patch 4 and while it the ops report shows the division arriving in Aden, I cant seem to find it there. Are all the Kiwis in the bazaar? Can you access the division in Aden? I have posted this in the Tech Support forum.

aprezto -> RE: Operation Privateer (7/21/2010 12:19:06 AM)

Especially the Maori Bn. Rather nice having NZ '43 inf squads in early 42 - they are brutal on armour.

Hmm interesting Khyber. They appeared instantly for me...? Using the 'd' beta patch.

Another point though is that the Ops report constantly states "NZ invaded - releasing anti-invasion forces" (or something like that - going from my somewhat limited memory). Despite this nothing extra seems forthcoming

Andy Mac -> RE: Operation Privateer (7/21/2010 12:36:31 AM)

OK that looks a bit iffy should have reformed into a standard 10 Bn Inf Div

Not a huge issue just a little untidy

Andy Mac -> RE: Operation Privateer (7/21/2010 12:38:21 AM)

OK thanks for that I can adjust that the Maori Bn should have been set to std squads and the TOE to normal squads minor glitch I will adjust

Andy Mac -> RE: Operation Privateer (7/21/2010 12:40:30 AM)

You didnt get the very nicve Invasion Mobilisation Convoy ??

You knwo the one with over 150 NZ Aircraft and a full Bdes worth of reinforcements - basically enough to fill up all your home defence Bdes ??

Or the British Armoured bde or any of the other forces diverted from passing round the Cape - you did look at Capetown didnt you ?

Andy Mac -> RE: Operation Privateer (7/21/2010 12:41:37 AM)

Urrgh those support numbers look a bit extreme as well I will take a look at that one again

Nope, just notification at the end of the combat turn and in the ops reports that the troops had arrived at Aden and Capetown, plus devices. But no troops in Capetown or Aden. The invasion of NZ took place about a month ago in game time. I just now was able to apply the patch. I have post the turn in Tech support.

EUBanana -> RE: Operation Privateer (7/21/2010 8:12:42 AM)

Wow, that division has enough artillery! 72 25 pdrs?

Andy Mac -> RE: Operation Privateer (7/21/2010 3:37:53 PM)

Thats normal 3 Field Reginments

OK bad news...

Last turn lead elements of BURCORPS entered Schwebo at exactly the same time as Japanese forces entered from Mandalay

Japanese shock attacked forcing my units to retreat in a hard fought 2:1 so not a rout.

39th Indian, 14th Indian and 3rd Carbiniers plus the 5th Chinese Army were retreated back onto their own rearguard which was the 17th Indian Div.

Not a good result in general they are down about 10% with about another 10% disabled its a nasty reverse for two green Divs.

My forces are now running for Katha fortuantely I have about another 2 Bdes there plus the 17th Indian Div is still at 100% (albeit its a light scale Div)

Max Effort strike against Schwebo ordered for tomorrow

400 Fighters and 200+ Bombers going to try and push the Japanese into Combat Mode and slow them down.

I need to get into the rough country to enable a stand
