Group patrol altitude is 15000 , scrambling fighters between 15000 and 38800. Time for all group planes to reach interception is 19 minutes after BB Massachusetts being torpedoed right after leaving the fleet base at Manado I was shortly thinking about cancelling this operation as I saw that happening as a bad omen already but I decided to go on... Rainer undoubtedly was aware of my fleet moving North but didnīt spot it during the search phase yesterday when we were in position North of Jolo... orders were given to move all fleet carrier task forces and the two escort carrier TFs to a postion 8 hexes South West of Manila where we still spotted KB yesterday as recon aircraft are over that base daily... I expected to see KB moving North (I would have taken it back to Takao for example) and if we would be lucky we would see a couple of small LBA strikes we could take out easily... initial plan was to draw a strike from KB that runs into our full Cap with us being out of range to launch a strike so we could use all fighters for Cap but the plan failed during the first hours when the fleet left - at least thatīs what Iīve thought... but KB was still at Manila and I could hardly believe it... so we are at the ordered position 8 hexes away from Manila and the first thing that shows up are the usual dozens of "error" messages that Zekes fail to escort and press on alone or return to base... pff, the point where this makes you feel completely sick has long been reached... so after counting up two dozen of these messages the first "wave" shows up over our carriers and 80 enemy fighters SWEEP our Cap... ok, Iīve thought, these are only Zekes, they are going to be shot up for minimal losses... BUST, Zekes or better fighters doesnīt matter, the fight starts and the first messages showing up are Zekes diving on Hellcats... what? god damn Iīve thought, weīve got more than 1200 fighters available, got something like 250 radar sets (thatīs no exxegaration btw) in the hex and the Zekes dive on our fighters? ok, must be a ceiling sweep then (which turned out to be true for a couple of Zeke units) and the Hellcats canīt even reach that alt but why doesnīt the dive stop at some point? For something like 5 min I watched "Zeke diving on Hellcat" "Zeke diving on Hellcat" "Zeke diving on Hellcat" and around more than a dozen Hellcats were shot down right away with over two dozen more being damaged for a couple of Zekes at best being damaged... heck, what is going on here, thatīs not going like Iīve expected it to turn out... at some point there came the time when the dive shifted side and that also shifted the odds... and out of a sudden the fight was over even though there were still nearly 50 Zekes shown in the replay... I have to say that I wasnīt unhappy with this engagement ending... result was something like a draw in aircraft shot down with three times more Hellcats damaged though... and the question remains, whatīs better? Trying to get your fighters to escort your bombers (if there is anything a player can do with that routine, something I doubt for over a year already) or trying your best to get things screwed up because then you get those fighters failing to escort your bombers on a sweep that ALWAYS shows up in front of your bomber strike while ORDERED sweeps are always a gamble if they show up in front of the bombers, in good numbers or if they show up at all... in this case, I definately go with trying to screw up as much as possible because this sweep could have reduced our Cap by 150+ Hellcats if it wouldnīt have ended all out of a sudden with plenty of Zekes left in the air... so yes, sweeps that result of "failed escorts" IMO are definately as powerful as ordered sweeps and everything that shows up as "sweeping" in the combat report actually is sweeping... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Morning Air attack on TF, near Taytay at 75,85 Weather in hex: Moderate rain Raid detected at 36 NM, estimated altitude 15,000 feet. Time for all group planes to reach interception is 40 minutes my Cap being reduced by roughly 10% at this point the first wave of bombers shows up with a good number of Zekes but this time the Zekes are coming in as escorts and the result is apparent, they are shot down in droves for nearly no loss to my fighters... this is what I was aiming for, reducing KBīs air arm... but where are KBīs bombers? KBīs fighters are escorting LBA strikes and taking losses. Though it could well be that these arenīt KBīs Zekes but land based ones with KBīs failing to escort and those were the sweeping ones - I bet thatīs the case as Iīve never saw a succesful escort of carrier based fighters escorting land based bombers... so this then wouldnīt have the effect I was aiming at... most of the escorts were shot down or sent home damaged with none of the bombers even coming close to my fleet... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Morning Air attack on TF, near Taytay at 75,85 Weather in hex: Moderate rain Raid detected at 200 NM, estimated altitude 8,000 feet. Williston lol, just last turn Iīve split off the escorts of this freighter convoy to have them meet a convoy leaving San Francisco and Iīve thought it wouldnīt matter much as this one is entering SF the next day anyway... ok, my fault, we lose a freighter that sinks like a stone... really amazing to me that Rainer still sends subs to the West Coast, also amazing that all my patrols there never pick them up... anyway, it doesnīt make much sense to me to send subs into this area at this stage of the war...
