HsojVvad -> Did you know? (4/4/2010 4:36:33 AM)

Let's put our did you know tid bits here. Things that we know but others may not. I will put one in what I just discovered now.

Did you know...

That if you want to see the development of your ship or starbase, or mining base, you click on it. Underneath the "desgin name" it will tell you how many components need to be built. If you double click on the name and then go to components, there it lists everything it has. But the stuff that is not complete is in a yellow black line construtions strip instead of the icon of the component.

Now I see why I can make ships from my star bases that are not even finished yet. So you can construt things when bases are partially built. All you need is that component to be built at the time.

Grotius -> RE: Did you know? (4/4/2010 5:43:02 AM)

Interesting. You mean that partly-built constructor ships can still build other ships?

HsojVvad -> RE: Did you know? (4/4/2010 5:51:46 AM)

Well I never built a ship from a constructor. But if it's anything like building at a star port, then I would say yes, as long as the construction port part, is built then yes. I have a star port that is only 50% built and it is making small fighters.

(and if anyone asks, my fighters is an escort, with one engine, one laser weapon, basically one of each minimum that I need to build it. I call them fighters since I am roll playing my game, and call them fighters. Works for me. I consider them like X-Wing fighters with hyperdrives on them.)

Did you know that you can hurry up research if click on the little blueish-silver ball just right of the progress bar. Click on it and you stop all research except the one area and pay the difference and the research is completed.

Not completed at once : what happens is that all effort is geared to this particular item, instead of being spread over 12 things, so it advances much faster. I use this feature regularly to get what I want quickly instead of random things popping up slowly - it costs some cash but gives a definite edge !

Kamonrius -> RE: Did you know? (4/4/2010 2:42:24 PM)

Did you know if you don't initially remove your military ships as requested by an Empire from their system they WILL assign a detailed escort to your ship for the time being, and if they think they can take you they will shoot it down. but if they are afraid of you they will just sit and wait but will follow you anywhere in the system.

Did you know independant colonies sometime contract Pirate allies to watch their ports?

Did you know Pirate alliances are beneficial but once the contract date limit arrives the Pirates will stop mid-battle, jump just outside the sytem they are attacking and wait for a renewal? and if they dont they simply leave.

did you know pirate alliences get a portion of your designs and technology to supplement them in their attacks? making them a ***** to kill later [:D]

HsojVvad -> RE: Did you know? (4/4/2010 8:21:59 PM)

I am glad I made this thread. I am learning alot here, some of these things I didn't know. I will have to make shure, I am very leary of going into an allience with pirates now, if I plan on eliminating them later.

why kill them? have a permanent alliance with all pirates you can see (its cheap later on) and whenever you find a home base of one destroy it (takes just a few shots for an advanced ship)... you don't need to hunt down the individual pirate ships after that, they get stuck without fuel and cant fight back and are eliminated by AI or even you.

BigWolfChris -> RE: Did you know? (4/4/2010 10:36:18 PM)

Personally I find pirates to not be enough of a threat to be bothered

Infact I find pirates to be quite worthless atm, you gain little by killing them, they are more annoying than scary, and it's not like they deal with anything else unique (Information doesn't count since I have Exploration ships for finding things)

Sure you can use them to fight enemies by proxy, but they can't be strong enough to do anything much (and tbh, I don't we really would want them too either)

Perhaps if they were a way to trade for rare resources, or influenced prices with a "black market" (Trade resources at there bases)... maybe I might be bothered with them

For now, I just kill them and take the small rep bonus I get for it, though personally I would prefer combat gave some form of "Ship Crew Experience" too make killing more worth it, but hey that might just be me

Kamonrius -> RE: Did you know? (4/4/2010 10:47:04 PM)

Did you also know that the ships of the destroyed faction that arent killed change their allegences with another Faction? when I was worried about the montser I unleashed on an enemy empire 13-20 grids away I wanted them dead beacause they broke an empire of 1500 military strenght down to 90 with my tech. the empires surrounding this 2 system empire consisted less than 400 MS (military strenght) so I knew those guys were screwed should I leave the pirates unattended. so I looked for their base by tracking their ships with monitering bases and destroyed their outpost....the remaining ships left and joined another faction putting my tech into more hands..........so unless you know what your doing..DONT GIVE PIRATES ANYTHING..

HsojVvad -> RE: Did you know? (4/5/2010 3:44:29 PM)

Mentioned this in the "what I like thread" I made, but did you know when you give a ship an order, the bottom left box where it gives the ship info, that the picture of the ship in the background is in the same potion that it is in the game? So if a ship is heading west, the picture of the ship in the ship info box is also pointing west. If it was pointing south, and then told it to go east, you will see the ship move and turn to it's heading.

Cindar -> RE: Did you know? (4/5/2010 3:56:01 PM)

Sometimes, when you are beating a pirate force really badly, they will join you and turn over control of all ships and stations they own.

Colonies that your colony ships can't start civilizations on, BUT have a native population aren't shown in the potential colonies section of the expansion planner. Instead, go to the listing of available mining colonies, sort by race and find them, then manually dispatch a colonizer to it.

Giving a civilization money through the trade interface makes their relationship rise about 2-3x as fast as it does if you give them a gift.

Information is pretty useful early game. Even a huge exploration fleet takes a while to find stuff, especially on the other side of the galaxy and/or with a large galaxy setting. Buy all the locations of independent colonies early, double your income and rack up all the bonuses. With that new income, buy all the locations of special areas and find huge fleets of unused ships to salvage for great tech bonuses or use to conquer enemies early. Its a tremendous jump start.

After one pirate faction joined up with me I watched its pirate resort base used as a colonization ship to colonize a nearby planet.

Is this true? Erik, I think this should be addressed if this is really the case.

HsojVvad -> RE: Did you know? (4/8/2010 9:02:31 PM)

Well I found this as a fluke. When in the Ship and Base screen if you hold the mouse down when over a ship you can highlight them as you go up or down, or you can hold shift to select them all from the first click to the second click or hold control and pick and choose wich ship you want. Not really shure what this benifit is, But you can do it.

HsojVvad -> RE: Did you know? (4/8/2010 9:05:17 PM)

Also figured this out as well. Did you know, as of 1.03 (well that is when I noticed it) that ships in red are damaged, ships in orange are being constructed. I like this, makes them stand out more and I don't have to think I have a ship that I can use, but is really being constructed and can't be used.

taltamir -> RE: Did you know? (4/8/2010 9:11:41 PM)

a ship with 0 fuel (and thus 0 energy unless you have built it with collectors) cannot fire its weapons, even missiles cannot fire...
it can, however, travel at a reduced speed.

frugaldude -> RE: Did you know? (4/8/2010 9:15:12 PM)

The ship damage and ship in construction color coding is a great feature.  Do you know if these can be sorted to the top of the list?  I may well be missing the obvious.

taltamir -> RE: Did you know? (4/8/2010 9:21:03 PM)

if you kill pirate factions (meaning, ignore their ships and blow up their home base) your reputation will increase. increased reputation means other empires like you more, it also means your citizens have higher morale and are able to pay more in taxes.

HsojVvad -> RE: Did you know? (4/8/2010 9:34:13 PM)

No I didn't know this. I am off to getting the pirate base then. This is a wierd game, no pirate attacks, but I want higher morale, so off with thier heads. [:D]

Keep it up guys, so much to learn here. And with the new patches adding new options we might not be aware of them, so put your 'did you know' in even if we do know. There should be one person who dosn't know or forgot, then he will be a yes I know. [;)]

taltamir -> RE: Did you know? (4/8/2010 9:37:53 PM)

if you pay protection fee to pirates, they will often offer a permanent alliance when it is over. you pay them a monthly fee, they never attack your ships, and attack every empire that hates you instead.

if you try to colonize a planet with ruins and it triggers a "pirates" trap, pause the game, check out the pirates to see which faction they are, go to diplomacy, pay them protection fee, unpause the game. Watch as they protect your colony ship as it colonizes said planet... while attacking any AI who tries to do the same :P

HsojVvad -> RE: Did you know? (4/9/2010 5:17:40 AM)

*edit* I was wrong here. Post deleted.

aprezto -> RE: Did you know? (4/9/2010 5:40:00 AM)

Just a little useful one I've found for upgrading ships, now that under 1.03 you can upgrade fleets:
Go to teh ships screen mouse drag all the ships you want to add to a fleet, use the fleets option at the bottom right of this window to allocate them to a fleet (upgrade fleet - whatever). Select the fleet and right click give them orders to upgrade at the nearest starbase.
Especially useful for escorts and frigates, which i usually have on auto. No need to chase them about the place now.

Hyfrydle -> RE: Did you know? (4/9/2010 8:38:00 AM)

Has anyone noticed the independant smuggler ships as your empire grows? Not sure what there upto but they seem to always be very fast ships. Must be linked to piracy in some way.

DigitalPhoenix -> RE: Did you know? (4/9/2010 8:59:13 AM)

did u kno , out of all the 20 alien races , only about 3 of them can colonize volcanic planets . and out of even a galaxy of 1400 star systems and 50,000 planets , moons , and asteroids only one or two of them will be a volcanic planet that contains zentabian fluid , and one or two of the desert planets will contain korabbian spice and a single one planet in all the universe will contain loros fruit .

well i didnt kno and i learned the hard way , LOL ! i started a game with a race that i didnt kno couldnt live on volcanic planets and i set the AI to make two random races and not a single one of those random alien races ended up being 1 of the 3 races that can colonize volcanic planets that contain zentabian fluid . i explored the entire universe after hours and hours and not a single independent alien race that could randomly be found in sleeping stasis or already on a planet was 1 of the 3 volcanic planet races . none of the lost colony ships were one either . none of the advanced level colonization modules could make u able to colonize volcanic planets either . so i and my opposing empires were out of luck ... for the most part .

BUT , the other two empires were smart and my empire's private sector AI was not so smart . their private sector built mining stations at the volcanic planet to extract zentabian fluid and then WOULDNT trade it with me . those stingy bastiges . LOL

i waited forever and my private sector never built a mining station of our own at that planet . =(
i suppose i could have blown their mining station to kingdom come and hoped and prayed my private sector would build a mining station there , but meh , i scrapped the game to start a new one .

so the lesson learned here kiddies ... is that if u r like me and start each game with one goal in mind which is to explore , locate , colonize and control the planets with the SPICE [korabbian spice] and other extremely rare resources like loros fruit and zentabian fluid which by the way are also extremely useless and act as just a regular resource to help colony development levels as well as the occasional ruins providing empire-wide bonuses , then make sure u include somewhere in your empire or opposing empires to be a volcanic planet-friendly alien race .

also , did u kno , in humongous galaxies , u can find more than one world annihilator ships BUT can only own one of them at a time . after trying everything i could to repair and own the second one , it just was not gonna happen . therefore , i decided to just destroy it so the oppsoing empires didnt get any bright ideas and repair it for themselves to start taking over my colonies HEHE

last one . did u kno , u can keep your reputation satisfactory by never going to war with another empire . every time they declare war on u , immediately go the negotiations screen and pay them the measley 15,000 - 20,000 credits to shut them up . then when u r absolutely good and ready or just plain fed up with their war threats , the next time they declare war on u , tell them to " bring it , fool ! i crush u like a soda can ! " LOL preferrably with a world annihilator in your possession [;)]

You can use the expansion planner to request a mine be built on a specific resource. Select the resource from the list then the planet with the resource. Then send an existing constructor or build a new one. Easy.

DigitalPhoenix -> RE: Did you know? (4/9/2010 10:57:01 AM)

wth ?! that is easy !

that's exactly how i handle colonizing planets . ><

didnt kno that u could do that with mining stations .

good thing this thread is here ! =D

good to kno , cuz knowing , is half the battle

-thx !

You can right click on your own mines now, and retire them now. Not shure if this is because of the 1.03 patch now.

I can't do that in 1.03

taltamir -> RE: Did you know? (4/9/2010 8:38:49 PM)

did you know, if you absorb an alien race into your empire that can colonize worlds not normally colonizeable (ex: volcanic, ice, ocean, etc), you would immediately be able to colonize such worlds (but only with colonizers build by worlds containing that race).

You can acquire new races into your empire by trading worlds with alien empires, sometimes newly established colonies with little strategic value can be bought very cheaply... a highly developed world can cost upwards of 5 million, but a poor world that was just colonized can cost under 10 thousand. Paying 20k in cash for a 10k priced world with a race that can colonize unique planets 10 minutes into the game is highly worthwhile... it is worthwhile at any point of your empire's development, but extra worthwhile at that point.
