Oh wow, if somehow Dungeons & Dragons count, then count me in.  However, I could NEVER get into that "make it up as you go" groups who read from those books and roll dice and just make up silly things.

Computer version of D&D is another story altogether.

'Lord Of War' is a tower defense (td) game where the objective is to place towers in strategic positions to stop the 10 different creeps or enemies from completing their path. Tower defense games are always challenging and recommended for everyone. ___________________________________________

Guadalcanal, from Activision, 1984, on Spectrum 128k+2

http://screenmania.retrogames.com/c64/01/c64_0022.html

Easier to play as the Japanese, as their superiority in surface ships made it easier to sink the Allied transports than vice versa. I used to be pretty good at this, but trying an online Java emulator of the game suggests I am out of practice.

AH Gettysburg (hex version - 1965), followed by Chancellorsville, D-Day, Tactics II, U-Boat, Air Empire (great game) and Dispatcher (another interesting classic). Then came Afrika Korps, if I remember correctly, then Waterloo, Bismarck, Battle of the Bulge, Stalingrad and on and on from there.

Back then, AH released one new game a year and it was always on my Christmas list (mine and my older brother who got me into the whole gaming thing).

Then SPI came upon the scene and started releasing dozen's of games in a year and the hobby was never the same again.

Haha, I missed this comment the first time. That's hilarious, i used to do the same. I'd build forts and trenches out of sand and then stand back and start pelting them. At one point I upgraded to a BB gun and then really went at them. Many years later when I was cleaning out my childhood memories I was amazed at how many headless and limbless GI's I had. I was pretty violent as a child!

Double ditto's.

We would have some big battles with two guys on each side. the rock throwing was controlled.

My kid brother was the Mr. distructo. He would cut the plastic soldiers in two-don't know why. He once cut a slot car ( mine) in two just to see what it looked like. He turned out to be quite the craftsman though.

Boardgame:  Avalon Hill D-day
Computer game - SSI "Guadacanal"

My favorite boardgame of all time was the Europa series most notably "Fire in the east"
My favorite computer game of all time are actually 2 series of games. First is Civilization (especially 2 and 4 with mods) and the second is WITP and WITP admirals edition.

I can almost guarantee the new Eastern front game will become a favorite as well.

Oh yeah, plastic models suffered the BB gun barrages, pellet rifle salvoes, and firecracker blasts. That was great fun.

That was part of the 4th of July ritual for my buds and I. We would each have two or three good models saved up for the occasion. Cherry bombs were good for the final blow.../all in the water, of course.

sol_invictus -> RE: What was the first wargames you played? (6/12/2010 4:31:47 AM)

First boardgame was Avalon Hill's Third Reich and the first computer game was Atomic's Market Garden. I was instantly hooked on both occaisions.

rickier65 -> RE: What was the first wargames you played? (6/12/2010 7:24:05 AM)

I'll discount 'Risk', and say that my first board wargame was SPI's the Conquerors, which was actually two games - (1)The Romans and (2)The Macedonians.

First computer wargame was Knights of the Desert (and the second was SSG's Battlefront - their original Battlefront that is).

I hear you junk..........one of my buddies down the street had a big ole Dirt pile in his backyard and we would set up our plastic army guys up on that like it was a moutain..............the best times were around the 4th of July and X-mas when we could use 'live ammo' on them (firecrackers, roman candles, etc.)

AH Gettysburg, then graduated to Panzer Leader/Blitz.

a7v -> RE: What was the first wargames you played? (7/22/2010 7:45:30 PM)

I also played a lot with my Airfix guys 40 years ago, I still have about 1500 of them, mostly WW1 and 2. I also had a big collection of tanks, planes (1:72) and ships which were used up when I got my air pistol. The tanks mostly were destroyed with metallic sodium and a few drops of water (anti tank mines[:D]). Of course I studied chemistry afterwards...

My first wargames on the C 64 after Elite were Kampfgruppe and Battles of Napoleon. In those days SSI was what Matrix is today, the holy grail of wargaming[:)]

Best regards

Rainer

Memory fails as we get older. How could I forgot all those things. So, revision: first throwing rocks, progressed to firecrackers thrown amongst hordes of enemy soldiers(I think they were German). BB gun came a little later. My last truly violent act was when I was 12. I lined up hundreds of soldiers. I went in my house, grabbed my 10 gauge shotgun and pulverized every one of those enemy hun. Only later did I realize I should have waited till mom was not home. OUCH. Dad laughed, which of course displeased dear ole' mom.

AH's Stalingrad and Panzerblitz were my first wargames. Remember that I saw an ad for AH in the back of Boys Life, the scouting magazine.

First computer game was Steel Panthers.
