My first were on C64 but since I had only tapedriver there was only few wargames. Lords of Chaos was kind of fantasy squad based but lots of fun. Then there was som turn based american civil war game cant remember name. The one true wargame I played most was crusade in the west.

I had some tank game on Nintendo and then Super Battleship on Super Nintendo.

Sid Meiers Gettysburg on the PC and Panzer General 2 on PS1 really got me into wargaming though...

Star Fleet Battles. God, that was my favorite board game of all time.

In terms of computers - the original Carriers at War for an apple IIe (yep i'm that old) - put out by Messrs Trout & Keating of SSG !

First Game:

Victory in the Pacific - Avalon Hill    I LOVED this game, played almost every weekend for a couple years...mostly solo.

The second Game I got was:

Squad Leader - Avolon Hill   This game is completely responsible for me still being addicted to men and tanks on hexes. (got Crescendo of Doom and Cross of Iron modules also)

Third Game I got:

Wooden Ships and Iron Men -  Avolon Hill   I really, liked this game also.

Plastic airfix soldiers and a marble

Igard -> RE: What was the first wargames you played? (10/5/2010 9:34:46 PM)

In terms of table top games, I was really into Warhammer 40.000k epic. That had really tiny miniatures so there could be huge battles.

Computer games, not really sure what it was called, but it involoved building lots of tanks. It came out around 1994-1995. It was really good!

I take the side with the marble had the advantage?

wodin -> RE: What was the first wargames you played? (10/6/2010 11:26:37 AM)

I'd set one side up at one end of the room and the other at the other side...using cover i.e a table leg etc etc....a small marble was for small arms...a big marble was arty...sort of played hot seat style...

Once I got to about 11 or 12 the battlefield moved outside in my mates back garden...then we used things like aerosol canisters and a match for flame throwers etc (dont try this at home kids)....very dangerous...and many melted soldiers....

GaryChildress -> RE: What was the first wargames you played? (10/6/2010 1:08:54 PM)

The first wargame I ever played probably involved a plastic model of the Guns of Navarone which they used to sell at the toy stores. Good times... [8D]

anarchyintheuk -> RE: What was the first wargames you played? (10/6/2010 3:42:57 PM)

I think I remember that. Half of a plastic mountain a couple of feet high, couple of guns. Yup, good times.

Best war set I ever had. God, I had some vicious battles with that! [&o]

I also had The Alamo made with metal sections too!

I never realized just how a bunch of war mongers my generation was back then! [:D][sm=00000106.gif][sm=Evil-210.gif][sm=sterb020.gif][sm=sterb032.gif][sm=Tank-fahr09.gif]

When we were playing war outside with plastic weapons, this one kid dipped his plastic Thompson mg in yellow dog **** and won,cuz we all ran as he chased us.

dfinan -> RE: What was the first wargames you played? (10/8/2010 12:43:42 AM)

My first wargame, there were three. The old Avalon Hill game Luftwaffe got me interested, then the old ziplock game Starfire, then the boxed game Starfleet Battles. I quickly progressed into Airforce, Airforce/ Dauntless and the Squad Leader series. I still have em all too. Great times, I really miss the old Avalon Hill.

RocketMan -> RE: What was the first wargames you played? (10/14/2010 9:39:51 PM)

First War game I played was Panzer Leader, probably sometime in 1975 or 1976 and I have been playing War Games ever since, which is about 35 years now. Man I am getting old :( .

tprice -> RE: What was the first wargames you played? (10/15/2010 2:00:32 PM)

Every once in a blue moon I'd get lucky enough to conquer North America in the first couple of turns. After that it was just a matter of time before the rest of the world came under my heel! [sm=00000612.gif][sm=character0095.gif][sm=Tank-fahr09.gif][sm=tank2-39.gif]

105mm Howitzer -> RE: What was the first wargames you played? (10/17/2010 12:28:09 AM)

First board game was Diplomacy, played in my High School Geo-Games Club. We were paired up with a teacher, and despite such niceties as disciplined meetings and such, things got out of control still, like when I followed the German delegate to the bathroom, then stole his briefcase from under the stall so I could retrieve the "secret" papers he had taken from the Russian player ( I was playing England) He came roaring out of the loo not quite prepared, and stumbled around a bit, but by then, I was gone.
First pre-pc game was B-17 Bomber on the old Intellivision system. Boooommbbs Awaaaayyy...

RocketMan -> RE: What was the first wargames you played? (10/17/2010 5:24:53 AM)

Intellivision. Now that brings back a lot of fond memories. And I remember B-17 Bomber as well. That was a great game.

Pretty much the same trajectory here. Loved Crusade in the West!

WRG 6th and 7th Ancients (Miniatures rules), I think. It was a 'while' ago now!

You must be a youngster. 6th edition was the current version when I stopped playing miniatures. I started with the original version 40 years ago. Authors were both in WW11 and one of them ran the wargames club I joined.
1st board game Avalon Hill's D Day where static German divisions really could not move.

I am only listing the moment I played a proper game of each category (I messed about before but I don't count those):

First Wargame:
Airfix commandos vs germans using Lionel Tarr's rules from Donald Featherstone's book Wargames (1970)

First Board Game:
Avalon Hill's Gettysburg (1974)

First Computer Wargame:
War in Russia on the Atara 800. Played that a lot! (can't rember the date)

Me too except 1st boardgame was AH's D Daywhich must have been 60's
