bigred -> RE: Operation Rangoon (5/2/2012 4:51:08 PM)

Then my old dutch xAPs take a hit for the team as they retreat to Broome. I noted a large Jap Tf headed south from Singers but could not get a reading on the size of the IJN force. Suspect a posible CVTf was headed south but will turn north now w/ a delay arrival into the Bay of Bengal. I suspect but not sure of the above.

bigred -> RE: Operation Rangoon (5/2/2012 4:54:37 PM)

then I wanted to suppress Chaing mai as a AF as FatR will need this to beat back my invasion.
So I hit it for 2 days w/ this air fleet.

bigred -> RE: Operation Rangoon (5/2/2012 4:56:28 PM)

then I was not expecting swordfish action so early.

bigred -> RE: Operation Rangoon (5/2/2012 4:58:12 PM)

Then SBDs spotted one of 2 IJN LSDs operating in the Rabaul/ NG supply effort. This was a long range attack. note the use of 500lb sap. I would bet a 1000lb sap would have sunk her.

Then alittle low naval action.

bigred -> RE: Operation Rangoon (5/2/2012 5:02:43 PM)

This is a look at the force deployment into Pegu. Undefended w/ a para drop on first turn to help the unload faster. Note the rail line to rangoon is cut from the north. If FatR want to get to me he will have to walk. Too bad I cant bomb his rail line at toungoo. as is if IJA wants t rail move from Mandalay or Magwa 3 days to upload and detrain plus 1 day of rail move =7 days by rail to toungoo or 9 days if he walks.

Like both, the CA intercept and the dead sub base at Georgetown. Thats the small victories that add so much salt to the game.

Thanks, I just got lucky.

bigred -> RE: What a bloodbath... (5/4/2012 11:30:40 PM)

This is a recap of past two action filled days in Burma.

1. Armor break out in 2 directions. One toward Toonguo and the other toward Moulman. The Moulman breakout surprised me w/ the speed as the 44th armor reg crashed the river into a shock attack.
2. IJA has railed one division from Magwa to Toungou(diagnosed from recon of troops at site). It Will be unloading from strat to combat for the next 2 days. This critical ex was controled last turn by one thai dvision. FatR commented that I had the para strenght to take the hex.
3. 1st AUS Corp has closed at Rangoon.
4. 1st and 2nd IJA AR Div completed w/drawal from mountains east of Mandalay into Mandalay leaving 56th division on the move.
5. This turn the 10th AF scored 129 airfield hits at Mandalay.
6. Chang Mai fell to a company strength para attack.
7. Intel this turn said 38th Div located at Lil Andaman.
8. I wonder what those IJAAF support personal think about Shermans in their base!!!

Razio Tanaka meets Arliegh Burke. The Burke TF was the DD Flotilla that sank all those Eboats at Madang last turn. Instead of direct return to MB Burke was ordered to sail around Kavieng and Rabaul before return. Burke is alive w/ one DD Boyd. I do believe the transports FatR was looking for at MB arrived after this fight.

The late air unsupported air support had this effect on my ground attack. Turn one was ok but problems w/ the turn 2 attack.

Could be jap airlift of Guards BDE is having an effect. not sure.

bigred -> RE: The Anvil and the Hammer (5/8/2012 2:35:24 AM)

Decision process options at Rangoon.
1. Jap Fleet is one turn (2days) away from ship bombardment support but might get left in the rangoon estuary(where I hope something bad happens to him(secret).
2. Ground options-paradrop plus ground attack again.
3. Ground attack w/out para drop, deliberate attack or shock attack the question.
4. Continue and /or increase the air support(if increased then a cut to the mandalay air attack).
5. Any naval gunfire support from now forward is subject to surface naval interdiction. 2xFuso class BBs and 2x CVs spotted coming into area.
6. Lost one CA and both CVEs this turn, I.e. I lost my fleet air cover except w/in about 2 hexes of the coast(which may be ok).
7. FatR has no choice but to commit the kitchen sink. If he loses Burma now he will lose 8 divisions between Tongu and Mandalay.
8. From post 769 I note a AV loss of 25% on the IJ defense at Rangoon. I attribute this to my air bombardment and maybe the arrival of the AUS 1st Corp into the hex which gave the IJ a (-)leadership..

9. Basically the AUS 1st Corp is the anvil and the Brit 14th army at Mandalay is the Hammer

bigred -> RE: The Anvil and the Hammer (5/8/2012 2:51:29 AM)

Another battle is the coming move by the Br 14th army into Mandalay. FatR knows it is coming and I dropped 200 bombers on it last turn. I was reading a AAR by Nemo and he was challenged by a reader about the ability of the allies to take a level 6 fort w/ 120000 troops. Nemo said he used 500 dive bombers for one week to soften the hex for the ground attack. So I hope me 200 plane mix(w/ 100 b24s) will do the job.

In addition the Yamato TF is sitting on Pegu as amphib transports look to be arriving next turn. Combat replay showed 4x 1000pb bomb hits on Yamato and 5 on the Musashi. But no listing on the saved combat report.

janh -> RE: The Anvil and the Hammer (5/12/2012 11:01:27 AM)

Wow, the move on Rangoon was quite a gambit. Daring, but if it works out, it will mean real trouble for FatR. I do have the impression he has been wasting some of his assets recently quite uncautiously -- I am think especially of those CAs and battlewagons in the NG/Solomons AO, or the supply convoys. The Milne-Bay fighting reminds too much of Guadalcanal, and that didn't go to well for the Japanese either. Too bad he isn't posting his side of things anymore.

Still following your AAR with excitement... keep it going and thumbs up!
