The 6' view is better of the vehicles than is of the ground mesh. But if the ground mesh was highly detailed the high level view would probably look like a tiled floor with distinct edges or patterns.

At no time in the history of the world have so many tanks been on the move as the first 60 days of Operation Barbarossa. There were more tanks in the two armies facing each other than in any other conflict.

Here is what a Soviet tank column on the move in the first week of July 1941 looks like.

Good Hunting.

Mad Russian -> RE: Screenshot of the day... (11/1/2010 9:25:33 PM)

Here they are from the German positions looking across the field at them. The Soviets did everything they could think of to attain concentration of force. The Germans did everything they could think of to keep that from happening.

At times they both managed to achieve their objectives and at other times they just stumbled into each other.

In this fight the Germans know the Soviet tank column is coming and the Soviets know where the Germans are waiting.

Good Hunting.

At times the easiest way to kill a T-34 in 1941 is with infantry assault.

Enigma6584 -> RE: Screenshot of the day... (11/3/2010 9:39:14 PM)

I'm going to ask a stupid question here so please forgive the ignorance.  I've loved all the screenshots...very interested in this game...was wondering about infantry modeling.  It looks to me that the infantry modeling is much like the old combat mission series.  The full squad is not modelled visually...3 figures represent an entire squad.  Is this correct?

junk2drive -> RE: Screenshot of the day... (11/3/2010 9:47:13 PM)

Correct

there is an option you can set to to show more figures, typically 5. but for performance reason most leave it at 3.

thanks
rick

Erik Rutins -> RE: Screenshot of the day... (11/4/2010 12:59:30 AM)

You can have the full squad displayed, but the game files support either 5 or 3 per squad for performance reasons. If you prefer to have 10-12 per squad and your system can handle it, it's a very easy mod to make. Also, in Ostfront casualties are represented visually, so when a squad takes light casualties, about a third of the squad's models are show as casualties, etc.

- Erik

Excellent.  Thank you for the answers.  This is going to be fun.

Mad Russian -> RE: Screenshot of the day... (11/8/2010 3:05:02 PM)

When you can't stop the tank you get the infantry. In this case I have a PzIIIF with a 37mm gun targeting the infantry riding on the back of a KV-2. Anyone that has ever tried to kill a KV-2 knows how hard that can be.

Here I am attempting to run up to the KV and take it out at close range. In the meantime I'm trying to knock the infantry off the back of it.

For those SL/ASL gamers and CMBB players this name should bring back memories.

This battle has a fresh map of the local terrain and new more up to date research on the action.

Luftwaffe Reconnaissance pilot to General Nehring of the 18th Panzer Division.

"More than 100 tanks are on the road moving west from Orsha to Borisov. Some of them are previously unidentified heavy types.

Watch out, they're coming!"

The 1st Moscow Motorized Division is moving west. Are you ready?

The fighting doesn't stop with the advent of autumn.

The hay is put up, the leaves are changing, storm clouds are building and T-34's are on the move again.

Do the hay stacks block LOS? Provide cover or concealment? Plus they look nice!

PDiFolco -> RE: Screenshot of the day... (11/13/2010 12:20:26 AM)

Well, nice but ... any chance to have better ground and building textures (at least)? I mean, it still looks like CM, 8 years ago...

junk2drive -> RE: Screenshot of the day... (11/13/2010 12:30:34 AM)

Not this time around. TOW has pretty screens and pretty high requirements. We try to make this as accessible as possible.

Bah, I hate ToW, but Achtung Panzer Kharkov is realistic *and* good looking !
Why not at least propose optional hires ground/buildings ? I know it can be modded, but not 5% of players can mod, whereas 25-30% have recent machines !

Mad Russian -> RE: Screenshot of the day... (11/13/2010 1:29:18 AM)

And that leaves 70-75% more that will play a low res game.

I would think the same percentage of those that played CM could mod PCO. I'd take that percentage.

No game is going to be for everybody. We're just trying to get PCO to appeal to as many gamers and their machines as possible.

AP43 is also real time and PCO is WEGO. AP43 is about a single campaign PCO is about the entire Eastern Front. Worlds apart in game play.

Good Hunting.

Mad Russian -> RE: Screenshot of the day... (11/13/2010 8:30:06 PM)

Making maps in PCO is a lot like making diorama's. First you make the map then you put units on it.

Somebody a while back asked about some new winter maps. I decided to create a new winter map for an OLD CMBB scenario I could never get to work. Interesting how close I got the old map layout to the actual terrain from GE.

Here is SS of the road to Volokolamsk. Just to the southwest of Moscow. This battle takes place 10 January 1942.

Come let me show you around.....[:D]

It's hard work clearing fields out of these forests. But we sell firewood in the winter so that helps a little.

The place is there in that stand of pine trees. Looks like the wife's cooking us up something for supper. I'm sure she's got the tea on as well.

Let's take a short walk around the farm yard, then we'll go get some of that hot tea.

That might have been me asking about new winter maps but this map looks great! Thanks MR.

Mad Russian -> RE: Screenshot of the day... (11/15/2010 2:29:48 PM)

Here's an example of what can be done.

The entire farm is enclosed with pine trees set close together to form a natural barrier against wolves and bears.

The house and the barn are set close together. That gives the owner easy access to his livestock in times of extreme cold and storms. The tractor is not left out in the January cold but is in the barn. There is a pile of wood, complete with axe to the back of the house. Not enough wood but I can add as much as I like. We are already using some of the firewood with the smoke coming from the chimney.

There is a 2 row pine tree wind break to the north of the house. This is pretty standard in cold climates.

The grain silo is set just a bit over from the barn but still in the overall enclosure. There is a break in the trees just behind the barn so the you can walk out the back of the barn and right over to the silo.

To the south of the house in it's own enclosure is a 3 tree orchard of some type. Apples probably. They have a wind break around them as well.

And that concludes the tour of the farm at this time.

Good Hunting.

While this is an actual stretch of road between Volokolamsk and Borodino I set the density of the woods. I determine what number of pine and other trees to add. I also added the farm at the crossroads because it seemed like a natural place for one.

The check box is labeled SoW.

The Tool Tip says "Russian Plays Science of War Rules" when you pass your pointer over the check box.

What does that mean exactly? [&:]

For those of you that have always HATED imposed delays and penalties for Soviet forces you can turn them off.

Historically the Soviets suffered from command and control ailments during the first part of the war. However, as the war progressed they got better. This allows you to turn off the penalties and let the Soviets play heads up with the Germans.

This can be turned off in any scenario, it's totally under the scenario designers control.
