Never thought I would see the day but he has released Kharkov 43 as a DIGITAL DOWNLOAD.

Im all over this sorry to post this but I felt the other wargamers had to know (I buy a ton of Matrix games too!). I think it is kinda cool.

There are 30 scenarios in total including eight campaigns, each Explicit Supply capable:

* Operation Star – 149 turns
* Operation Gallop – 179 turns

Excellent news.

htuna -> RE: Holy cow John Tiller has gone digital (12/3/2010 1:43:50 PM)

uh oh.. I'm in trouble!

benpark -> RE: Holy cow John Tiller has gone digital (12/3/2010 1:50:15 PM)

I'm a little unclear on how this works though the DD option. I just ordered it, but I don't see the link for download or an email with the link yet. I'm assuming that it's forthcoming, but I'm used to the instant link as we have here at Matrix.

pvthudson01 -> RE: Holy cow John Tiller has gone digital (12/3/2010 1:52:19 PM)

When I ordered it the link was on the next page right after I bought it and the order was confirmed. I didnt navigate off that page. There is a limit of 10 downloads but I mean I havent ever downloaded something more than 3 times to be honest. There is also an email you should get. I used a credit card though didnt use Paypal this time

Also if you log back into the site their is a detailed invoice and at the bottom is a link to download (click the name of the title)

benpark -> RE: Holy cow John Tiller has gone digital (12/3/2010 1:53:39 PM)

Thanks. Found it by re-logging in.

htuna -> RE: Holy cow John Tiller has gone digital (12/3/2010 1:54:03 PM)

Does this mean he has left HPSSims? I don't see the game listed there...

Wish it was a Civil War/Squad Battle, or a new Panzer Battle title..

AH HA! This is exactly what I was asking my friend! Does this mean he is splitting off? That is after all a spiffy new website that he has and HPS Sims has been very adamant against moving into the "modern" age it seems

junk2drive -> RE: Holy cow John Tiller has gone digital (12/3/2010 1:58:33 PM)

Wow

I've been checking his website for info on Panzer Battles, a 250m platoon level game, to see how close it is to JTCS.

I've also kept an eye on the wargamer HPS forum as people were waiting for the First Friday of the month new release from HPS. Hints was a 43 game from Rich and Glen. Since Glen chimed in I thought it would be a PzC game. Some people guessed Kharkov 43.

I did not expect Tiller to set up his own store. The times they are a changin'

pvthudson01 -> RE: Holy cow John Tiller has gone digital (12/3/2010 2:00:31 PM)

If I am not mistaken some things are new in this version. First off the mouse wheel scroll up or down changes the map and now there are sound effects when a unit moves.

Times are changing indeed!

TheGrayMouser -> RE: Holy cow John Tiller has gone digital (12/3/2010 2:12:16 PM)

Well it does appear that John Tiller is going to be self publishing his own games independantly of HPS

Heres a quick link to R Hamiltons blog at gameSquad

Lützow -> RE: Holy cow John Tiller has gone digital (12/3/2010 2:14:30 PM)

Good to know for future reference. But with WitE at the gates not really an option right now.

V22 Osprey -> RE: Holy cow John Tiller has gone digital (12/3/2010 3:10:58 PM)

I'm a little....shocked...

Does this also mean no more physical versions??

Those are improvements taken from First World War Campaigns: France '14

htuna -> RE: Holy cow John Tiller has gone digital (12/3/2010 3:11:58 PM)

You can only install it on one computer.. Major FAIL..

junk2drive -> RE: Holy cow John Tiller has gone digital (12/3/2010 3:15:06 PM)

To add to cmurphy, online activation, one computer at a time.

V22, yes all future work will be self published.

pvthudson01 -> RE: Holy cow John Tiller has gone digital (12/3/2010 3:44:17 PM)

Meh

How many computers do you need to install it on? Im just glad Tiller joined the 2000's. He may bend later.

htuna -> RE: Holy cow John Tiller has gone digital (12/3/2010 3:54:10 PM)

I play on a desktop in my cellar.. and a laptop.. switch between the two all the time as I"m sure a large population of us Wargamers do.. I'm all for them protecting their investment.. but don't screw your paying fan base..

For all the people that slam Steam.. Steam rocks compare to this.. I have it install on every computer in my house and I can install MY games on any computer in the house..

What happens if your PC crashes (you didn't get to do the 'uninstall').. your up a creek!

pvthudson01 -> RE: Holy cow John Tiller has gone digital (12/3/2010 4:00:26 PM)

Ah got ya. I only have one PC at the moment I wish I did have a laptop though! But I hardly travel anymore. Good point

htuna -> RE: Holy cow John Tiller has gone digital (12/3/2010 4:04:34 PM)

sorry didn't mean to seem 'angry'.. just was psyched to see them go to digital download.. but then seeing this DRM scheme really ticked me off.. I prefer playing on my desktop (big monitor - Stereo hooked up for sound - better keyboard/mouse).. but I hate playing in the cellar.. lol so lots of times I play as well on the couch in the living room.. and it is great for when you travel as well.. get to do something at night before bed [;)]

That and they neither host a support system nor a forum. If something goes wrong with a purchase, all one can do is sending a mail.

Lützow -> RE: Holy cow John Tiller has gone digital (12/3/2010 6:35:30 PM)

Altogether I think this web shop was a bad idea. It doesn't live up to customers expectations, DRM could do more harm than benefit in regard to the customer base, and HPS might fall apart without new Tiller releases.

He should have rather distribute his games over Matrix.

Man, that was just cold. Funny as hell, but cold. [sm=00000622.gif]

V22 Osprey -> RE: Holy cow John Tiller has gone digital (12/3/2010 11:25:16 PM)

I really don't like this move.

1)I like phyiscal CD, I hate downloading unless the game is ONLY available through download.
2)I would rather wait for the physical CD to come through the mail than have DRM. To all you guys who wished for digital download: be careful what you wish for.[:D] Now you get DRM.
3)New DRM scheme is REALLY Disappointing.
4) This proably means no more new John Tiller purchases for me, unless through HPS.
5)Poor HPS...considering like 80-90% catalog of they're John Tiller games this could mean the end for HPS...which is sad because I like that company.

agree++ 100%

sabre1 -> RE: Holy cow John Tiller has gone digital (12/4/2010 1:29:39 AM)

It's a losing proposition for me. If it isn't like Matrix, they can go pound sand.

I always buy the physical CD if available. I hate any kind of DRM scheme. I won't buy any software from Eagle Studios becuase of DRM. I won't buy anything from Battlefront because of DRM. If Matrix had a policy like this I wouldn't buy anything from them either. I would find a new hobby. Serial numbers are fair. I understand it, and I also appreciate the freedom it gives me knowing I own the game.

V22 Osprey -> RE: Holy cow John Tiller has gone digital (12/4/2010 1:42:21 AM)

I will say the DRM is a punch in the gut. Being a loyal buyer of John Tiller and his games at HPS only to get slapped in the face by DRM.[8|] A shame as I really enjoy First World War: France '14 and Musket and Pike: The Renaissance and I was really looking forward to later releases of those series'.[:(]

This strikes me as an almost no-win for Tiller... do a search of how many people complained they didn't like CD's and really wanted downloads for Tiller titles (the obvious solution for having both may not be possible due to the either/or HPS/Tiller situation(s) now).

Remember they do a lot of government work in the background. I think they'll survive. Just not so much in our arena. Then again, they still have a whole lot of Tiller titles under their banner. As well as a few other authors. Who may not be as prolific as Tiller (which many have attributed to the cookie-cutter approach), but are becoming popular in their own right.
