I'd like to start seeing defensive lines built in front of Moscow - you have the opportunity to start digging in now, so you should take it (if you have the men available).

This is going into effect this next turn.I have 5 rifle divisions that will be doing just that. But its been a meat grinder and quite expensive in formations.

Tophat1815 -> RE: Tophat1812(REDS) vs Moses(Krauts and friends) (12/29/2010 6:55:03 PM)

I'm falling back and trying to use terrain and the fact he has got to be having supply and tiredness issues in my method of falling back. I need about 3+ good turns before Leningrad will be where I want it for siege. On the plus side of the coin he seems to be pushing through south of Smolensk with a main push.

Trying to keep him from making the "BIG SWEEP" of envelopment action,I move back. I can fall back like this all the way to Moscow.

I now have: Depleted divisions coming in. They have basically a battalions worth of men,some 800-900 troops and few guns. Are these the type of shells that will take 2+ weeks to fillout I can now expect to see?

Tophat1815 -> RE: Tophat1812(REDS) vs Moses(Krauts and friends) (12/29/2010 7:01:47 PM)

More retreating,line straightening/shortening to free up units and attempt that checkerboard or layered defense.

A major pullback in the Kiev area for space and to start getting a major river obstacle ready. All industry west of Kiev has been railed out already.

Tophat1815 -> RE: Tophat1812(REDS) vs Moses(Krauts and friends) (12/29/2010 7:09:30 PM)

My how my once proud Southwest Front has been handled in 6 weeks. At the least 1 to 2 corps of armor's destruction was due to my throwing them into the attack. Those Romanians will pay for luring me in dearly. Once the Axis ally is gone,German troops will need to be spread thinner to fill the gaps.

"Revenge is a dish best served cold eh?" I'm waiting for winter......[sm=00000612.gif]

Tophat1815 -> RE: Tophat1812(REDS) vs Moses(Krauts and friends) (12/29/2010 7:14:16 PM)

Southwest Fronts current situation:

Tophat1815 -> RE: Tophat1812(REDS) vs Moses(Krauts and friends) (12/29/2010 7:15:34 PM)

And rounding it out my South Front at the end of Turn 6:

I have a rifle division dug-in at Odessa,they are the defenders until they are dugout.

Yup.

randallw -> RE: Tophat1812(REDS) vs Moses(Krauts and friends) (12/29/2010 7:46:23 PM)

New divisions need a 4th week before they are really ready to fight.

Tophat1815 -> RE: Tophat1812(REDS) vs Moses(Krauts and friends) (12/29/2010 7:59:28 PM)

Thanks for the reply fellows on the "Depleted shell divisions",not what I wanted to hear but its not a surprise either. I'm going to take particular attention of Axis AFV losses this next turn,hopefully after another "bound" into my defenses guts. He must rest and re-organize sometime. Looks like I have some shell divisions on the way to Moscow.....Hope AGS needs a weeks breather!

I have a number of cavalry divisions,my plan......

                 1) Look for opportunity and dart in to isolate those brave hard driving panzers! Buy myself a turns respite as his infanty slogs their way to the rescue of his over-eager tankers!

                                Plan B..............

                 2) Practice looking impressive for this years May day celebration in Sverdlovsk

randallw -> RE: Tophat1812(REDS) vs Moses(Krauts and friends) (12/29/2010 8:27:15 PM)

You can put shell divisions near the back of your defensive line; they'll dig in while receiving equipment and men.  Having them dig in way back at their arrival town/city doesn't help much.

Tophat1815 -> RE: Tophat1812(REDS) vs Moses(Krauts and friends) (12/30/2010 5:49:04 PM)

Tracking the amount of armor the Germans are loosing,seems some of these panzer divisions must by now be getting light. Also with close to 160,000 casualties and the mechanized forces doing a good deal of fighting they have to be hurting.

Tophat1815 -> RE: Tophat1812(REDS) vs Moses(Krauts and friends) (12/30/2010 5:54:35 PM)

Air losses are some 9 to 1 in favor of the HUNS! But with 1,000+ aircraft lost the Luftwaffe is taking damage as well.

Tophat1815 -> RE: Tophat1812(REDS) vs Moses(Krauts and friends) (12/30/2010 5:58:36 PM)

I'm not very pleased about this at all! I've lost another 47 units this past turn alone. The 2 pockets he formed on the Smolensk front have both more or less disappeared. I had to move my airbases back and lack of sufficient resupply aircraft cost me some divisions.

Tophat1815 -> RE: Tophat1812(REDS) vs Moses(Krauts and friends) (12/30/2010 6:02:17 PM)

I was wrong,it wasn't a lack of supplies that caused a loss of those pocketed units. The Germans attacked all along the pockets,here is just one example:

Tophat1815 -> RE: Tophat1812(REDS) vs Moses(Krauts and friends) (12/30/2010 6:09:31 PM)

Well here is a good example of the RED Army being able to stop the Germans,just give them some terrain to hide behind.

Tophat1815 -> RE: Tophat1812(REDS) vs Moses(Krauts and friends) (12/30/2010 6:17:47 PM)

In his haste moses forgot about that pesky island southwest of Tallinn in the Baltic states. Surprise,surprise but 2 Rifle divisions and an NKVD rgt are there.

Tophat1815 -> RE: Tophat1812(REDS) vs Moses(Krauts and friends) (12/30/2010 6:36:32 PM)

In my zeal I didn't notice the bad news about Tallinn being lost. And the division that was holding it was ripped-up and left in an unready state.

Encircled -> RE: Tophat1812(REDS) vs Moses(Krauts and friends) (12/30/2010 6:48:00 PM)

Great AAR

Only managed three turns as the Germans on Road to Leningrad and awaiting my manual, so currently absorbing as much info as possible.

I've a lot to learn!

randallw -> RE: Tophat1812(REDS) vs Moses(Krauts and friends) (12/30/2010 6:56:32 PM)

The mountains behind the Pola river have some 'rough' sections; those will be a good place to make a line.

Playing against the computer i've noticed it's better to move a out of an area where they've dug in, if they isolated, and move to a place where they can trace supply again.  They'll be more vulnerable to retreating/routing but at least they get a chance to run away, rather than surrender.  Not sure if this works vs a human opponent.

Tophat1815 -> RE: Tophat1812(REDS) vs Moses(Krauts and friends) (12/30/2010 7:46:29 PM)

The 12th PzDiv and Lehr bdge areabout to be isolated yet again. I'm looking at ways to isolate some more mobile units east of Smolensk and hopefully buy myself a turn as moses straightens the line and chews-up what I put in his path.

sillyflower -> RE: Tophat1812(REDS) vs Moses(Krauts and friends) (12/31/2010 12:04:53 AM)

Have read your posts with great interest. Have been playing soviets vs AI just to learn. Hadn't realised about the manpower issue where factories have been moved to back East. A bit of a b#gg~r especially as I have given high priority to rail out as much as possible. My other known mistake is to play too quickly and not pay enough attention to command levels/distances -a bad habit I will need to cure before taking on a human. I have sacrificed some airborne units too but am not convinced that's a major sin. After all, I reckon the trade off is worth it and I can beat-up the Nazis the old fashioned way later - it is not as if that many have been destroyed.

Based on my experience:

Take every chance to use cut-off forces to get in the way of his supplies - and isolating if possible. Try and repeat against same units for more than 1 turn. If you can't disrupt supply, try and disrupt his admin movement instead. Slowing the inf is vital.

IMHO it's really not worth attacking as much as you have, but using minimum forces to degrade supply and slow admin movement is a worthwhile sacrifice. Don't bother attacking Hun/Rum etc allies - they aren't a threat and you need the troops elsewhere. Just wait for 12 turns of blizzard ! The wait really is worth it.

I used fortified areas to garrison Finn stop lines ( but now see that border guards are better where availiable and a few to fortify a couple of lines W of Moscow, + some of Ilmen river line to protect Leningrad. I bought new support units where availiable and swapped a few of the weaker commanders. Am doing more swapping since I realized about the 500 point cap. At least I will be able to create lots of corps in a couple of turns.

I also disbanded Corps HQs as quickly as I could after putting at 0 support level for 1 turn to get rid of support units. I'm not sure what happens to them if still attached to corps when I disband, and I've been too lazy to check how to remove them by hand.

randallw -> RE: Tophat1812(REDS) vs Moses(Krauts and friends) (12/31/2010 12:11:58 AM)

Corps HQs get disbanded automatically through the summer of '41.  Attachments in disbanded Corps HQ are suppose to move to the higher HQ they answered to.

kfmiller41 -> RE: Tophat1812(REDS) vs Moses(Krauts and friends) (12/31/2010 1:49:57 AM)

Your doing really well Top, from what I can see. Your losses are about the same as mine, maybe a little higher but your opponent is more aggressive than mine at the moment. I just sent in turn 8 and it seems your opponent is pushing from a different direction than mine. Mine seems to be heading more south and north, not directly at Moscow, and your opponent looks to be trying to move the center more. I doubt you will be able to hold the Dnepr along the entire length due to your troops quality, I couldn't even with 3 turns to dig, but maybe you will have better luck.
I put those shell divisions in an army right away and refit them for at least 2 turns before I send the army to the front. Of course if you don't get the time then station them around moscow and let them dig[:D]

Chad Harrison -> RE: Tophat1812(REDS) vs Moses(Krauts and friends) (12/31/2010 7:20:31 AM)

Just wanted to say that I am playing as the Russians against the AI, and all you have to do is survive until the mud hits (turn 17 IIRC). Yes those shell divisions arent the best, but fill them up and throw them in front of the panzers. All you are doing at this point is buying time. 1st winter is *brutal* for the Germans - you can regain a *lot* of ground during those three months of blizzards (Dec-Feb).

Keep up the good fight! Just hang on for 10 or so more turns - then its your turn [:D]

Tophat1815 -> RE: Tophat1812(REDS) vs Moses(Krauts and friends) (12/31/2010 7:29:49 AM)

Thanks Chad,that is basically what I had decided on doing. Trying to funnel him on toward Moscow....deep in the MOTHERLAND. But I do want to keep Leningrad so hope he pours it on in the center.

Tophat1815 -> RE: Tophat1812(REDS) vs Moses(Krauts and friends) (12/31/2010 2:15:51 PM)

Holding in place and buying some time for another turn in the GREAT WHITE NORTH! I was shocked to see my divisions not only hold but stay in good shape.

Tophat1815 -> RE: Tophat1812(REDS) vs Moses(Krauts and friends) (12/31/2010 2:18:53 PM)

Starting to Form the Leningrad Redoubt....waiting for Mud then Winter to hurt the Wehrmacht! Moved tank and a good deal of armament production out of Leningrad already.

[image]local://upfiles/19413/78537F709EF1437E88204DEC2E0722C5.jpg[/image]

Tophat1815 -> RE: Tophat1812(REDS) vs Moses(Krauts and friends) (12/31/2010 2:21:54 PM)

The terrain is a major bonus here and moses might find his armor much,much less effective in the forest and swamps south of Leningrad.
