I bought my copy at the Toy Soldier in Bath, ME. Peter was the owner and designed it. The picture is the only one I can find on the net. I am thinking it was a local only, but Peter went to war game show and sold it.
It was very detailed. I can't find my copy[&:]

Been 25 years since I played it, but you had dice up the butt. You would follow though pages of charts based on what, where and who you were.

Example:
Winter weather
Shooting a BAR from a foxhole while standing up - range to target - at a German squad in the open while standing up.
You rolled a die to looked it up on the chart. You could get a head shot, leg, abdomen etc hits. Tanks could factor in running fast across a frozen field and thus suffer broken tracks etc.

It was a very cool game! Lots of details. It was like ASL, but lots more detail. CM was a lot like it, which was why I loved CMBO when it came out[&o]

One of my friends from school also had it and about 5 years ago he still had the rules. I am going to try to locate him again and see if I can buy or get the rule book. I still have all my dice and figures in the basement[:D]

jinchoung -> RE: Status? (1/22/2011 2:50:08 AM)

howdy,

so i expressed interest in the tin soldiers series hoping to get my minis gaming fix in future iterations of these games but alas, it turns out it wasn't to be.

but someone recommended this series, especially since it's being developed by former table top guys so i figured i would indeed give ostfront a shake. sooooo.... when?!?! : )

anyway, i've enjoyed combat mission (have all 3 of the 1x engine games) but i'm kinda hoping that PCO will be able to do something that CM kinda failed to do - provide scenarios that feel satisfying without having dozens of units. CM has small missions but they feel tiny and basically are reserved as infantry skirmishes and tutorials.

for me, this is the appeal of minis - the ability to have a manageable number of units so that i can form a coherent tactical picture and not having it devolve into just throwing handfuls of units at each other.

i know there are a lot of gamers that appreciate mass and scale and huge numbers of units duking it out. and that's totally cool. alas, my tiny brain doesn't operate well with those kinda numbers.

so can anyone answer whether they think ostfront will be able to satisfy my particular gaming itch?

thanks much and i've got cash burnin' a hole in my pocket so hurry!

junk2drive -> RE: Status? (1/22/2011 3:07:13 AM)

We are working on getting a demo out as fast as we can. Then you can see for free if it suits you.

You might also look at Slitherine/Matrix BBC Battlefield Academy. It is IGOUGO turn based which is more like minis to me. It is geared toward smaller battles as well.

jinchoung -> RE: Status? (1/22/2011 3:34:57 AM)

thanks j2d...

well if it's anything like combat mission, i'm pretty sure i'll have fun with it. but it's great you guys try to do right by your customers.

as for BA, i looked at it but it seems like it's coming from the "advance wars" school of gaming where it's almost "puzzle based" instead of utilizing battlefied tactics. which is again cool for peeps who like it but not up my alley.

probably the closest to what i was looking for was field of glory but the hex based gameplay is more akin to a previous product that developer was working rather than FOG... and it's clunky and the upgrade system is a complete wreck....

so yeah... waiting for ostfront!

thanks again.

As soon as we get the demos finished and all the scenarios and mods done. The testing is in it's final stage now.

Really? I have made a few CM scenarios that were small. Some of them were specifically designed for beginners tournaments but others are full fledged tournament quality. At least I think they are! [:D]

Some of my smaller scenarios have been converted for PCO and may show up in the update. You just never know. I'm sure more of my better work will continue to be converted over as well as making new scenarios. I know that I've done HSG Dangerous Information which was a conversion of mine of an ASL scenario (The Puma Prowls) which is low density. I can't wait to try A Brief Visit To A Church as well.....we'll see.

Those were my first CM scenarios so they may find their way into PC too.

quote:

The maps come in sizes as small as 500 meters per side. Also, I did an AAR for a company sized action. You might want to take a look at that and see how that went....not well for me. Those that have played my CM scenarios know that I like the smaller intense from start to finish battles. Normally, for me, the smaller the better. I have even made scenarios that feature a single AFV as your entire OOB. One scenario I made was only 7 turns long. I was challenged to make a scenario that was only 5 turns, I didn't make it but the scenario got good reviews, so it wasn't a total waste.

Yeah, I get it. About 75% of the scenarios I've made have been medium sized or smaller. I don't like the huge scenarios myself; unless I make them...[X(] Which I rarely do.[:-]

gijas17 -> RE: Status? (1/22/2011 5:12:39 AM)

Thought I'd chime in here... finally. PCWS is what brought me to Matrix. I had the first game the day it came out and loved it. Of course like most of you I came from CM and more importantly, BTB so it was hard for me to get use to some of the features PC had vs CM and like many of you I've waited in the past for the PCK patch and now Ostfront. However, I see the whole picture. I understand the time it takes to design something as I do it in real life at least with maps. For me, I can wait until it's ready to be released but Im willing to wait for a complete game rather than a rushed game. But look at it this way, PC as a series and game has come a long way from the original. I just wish I could get my dirty hands on that Battle for Moscow campaign mod someone here was designing for PC a few years back, oh well... lol.

Mad Russian -> RE: Status? (1/22/2011 5:38:10 AM)

I don't know about any Battle for Moscow mod but there are rumors of wars in some interesting places once this update is released. Moscow may be one of them. The game now supports weather effects as well as the tanks. The problem with taking Moscow is it's hard to do with these.

> Really? I have made a few CM scenarios that were small. Some of them were specifically designed for beginners tournaments but others are full fledged tournament quality. At least I think they are!

are these included in the game or are they downloadable somewhere? one really disheartening thing about combat mission is the terrible support and how battlefront seems to have just shut down community sites and scrubbed the web of mods and stuff. or at least that's the impression and even with google, it's a mess to wade through what is left.

are there any good websites that would have a list or survey of scenarios where i can get an idea smaller games i would enjoy?

also, for me, the scenarios list in the CM games were less than friendly or inviting... more often they struck me as rather impenetrable and intimidating. i've noticed that some of the missions are described in a more accessible way listing battlefield size and army points total so that it makes sense to someone who is not intimately familiar with something like the eastern front or the campaign in africa... but others stop at the number of turns and small, medium, large and as someone who doesn't know wwii inside and out, i'm usually left just lost.

anyway, thanks much for your time and info and i'll be looking forward to PCO whenever dday arrives!

LOL... MR, yeah, those tanks froze up really quick near Moscow in December. It's a long way from being a King Tiger to. Had to keep them running 24/7 or built fires underneath them, geeez can you imagine if they forgot to put up a gas can nearby.... instant Bonfire.

I stand at correction MR. The scenario was called "something - Tula." which is S of Moscow but related to the battle.

"According to Glantz by early December, the temperatures[57] dropped as low as twenty to fifty below zero. The German troops, who still had no winter clothing, were freezing, and their vehicles were not designed for such severe weather. More than 130,000 cases of frostbite were reported among German soldiers.[37] Frozen grease had to be removed from every loaded shell[37] and vehicles had to be heated for hours before use.

The Axis offensive on Moscow stopped. As Guderian wrote in his journal, "the offensive on Moscow failed...We underestimated the enemy's strength, as well as his size and climate. Fortunately, I stopped my troops on 5 December, otherwise the catastrophe would be unavoidable."

You can find my CMBB/CMAK scenarios and those of my group at:

http://the-scenario-depot.com/

If you do an alphabetical listing you will find our scenarios under the H listings. Ours are the ones that start with HSG. We have a few for you to choose from...[:D]

Since I started the group in 2003 we've made everything from campaigns to the smallest possible scenarios. Mine are mostly small and intense. Others of the group like to make larger scenarios and even some campaigns but only a very few because we thought the campaign system in CM was broken. That's one thing I look forward to doing here in PC. Campaigns that work.

I have it on good authority that HSG is working on scenarios for PCO after it's been released. We'll see just how good those guys are.

Mad - I know this was brought up before somewhere so I hope you don't mind if we quickly revisit this topic. I wonder how difficult it would be to add extra troops to each unit. As it looks now 2-3 men represent a full squad of 9-12 troops. That assault company looks like its just one little squad on the screen and it's swallowed up by the forrest. I'm fortunate enough to have a fairly beefy pc & graphics card so if I wanted to "fill-out" all units to their historical allotment of troops, how difficult would that be? Also, how taxing is it overall? If my pc is good to go, is the game/software itself able to handle all the extras? Thanks!

WilliePete,

You can do what you want pretty easily.

At the moment PCO uses a 5 man squad representation as default, but there is a switch in the options panel to reduce this to 3 man for lower spec machines.

Also mounted squads (on vehicles and in buildings) are always abstracted to 3 men.

Men don't die as a stand like they did before, but now die off individually and you often see their dead bodies strwen on the field.

I am sure after release there will be someone who will probably do this for you but to increase a squad size from the deault go into its unit.xml define with a standard text editor and change it thus

<models compendium="genericinfantry/Ger SS Pz Gr win.png">
      <model name="body1" filename="German SS Rifle/german_elitemgun.x"/>
      <model name="body2" filename="German SS Rifle/german_elitesmg.x"/>
      <model name="body3" filename="German SS Rifle/german_eliterifle.x"/>
      <model name="body4" filename="German SS Rifle/german_eliterifle.x"/>
      <model name="body5" filename="German SS Rifle/german_eliterifle.x"/>
</models>

In this case simply add more body defines. You can add as many as you want ie you could fill out to 9-12 if you wanted. If you have a beefy machine it shouldn't effect it much. It all comes down to the total number of polys. So larger squads with more men in them will mean to keep the same performance you will need fewer squads on screen, it all comes down to taste.

Sweet! This was one of my biggest disappointments in the origional games. It just didn't feel right and took away from the immersion when their Tin Soldiers series had a hand that would at least come out and take one unit from the stands when enough kill points were amassed. THanks a lot for this.

Indeed! PCO is multithreaded to the hilt! The more cores you have the faster the game will load, render (especially the new grass system which is multithreaded), and calculate during the sim phase.

Your machine will play PCO very nicely even with all the highest settings on the very largest 2km maps.

Ok here is a little movie demoing a single death. These suicidal soviets are charging (Human Wave - this was an AI decision not mine [;)]) a group of PZIIs in order to engage them in close assault as there was no more anti tank assets to engage them at this stage.

This in and of itself is a new order available only to the soviets and opens up some new tactical possibilities.

Of course it is costly in human life as shown in the movie below.

Note: This was taken from a very old map which doesn't have grass enabled, so keep that in mind, we should have grass enabled on all maps by the time of release.

Enjoy
