Central Zone 2 Turn 7

Here we can see the lovely hole blasted across the Dnepr River (hate spelling these Russian names). I could have used that extra Panzer Corp or 2 here. But a nice hole either way.

Central Zone 3 Turn 7

And here is the dreaded swamp. Hardly anything in it to slow me down. It even looks bleak towards Gomel. I don't get it, I would be like a bad case of fleas in that swamp.

First we have an error on his part. Seriously thinking of offering to pull it back. He did not guard the Finnish border good enough and I am over the border above Leningrad.

That's not an error, 2ndACR. I take it you haven't seen the Russian side? Defending that border is a waste of time and resources. You would need many divisions to guard it. Forces that you do need elsewhere, especially to stop the Germans [8D]

The Finns are harmless and irrelevant as long as the Germans don't capture Leningrad. On my game I really didn't pay attention to the Finns. I simply withdrew, pushed by them. You have a bigger fish to fry in the south [8D]

2ndACR -> RE: GC 41 2ndAcr (G) vs Oleg (R) No Oleg please (1/24/2011 10:10:09 PM)

Southern Zone 1 Turn 7

Here we can see the next really nice pocket I got and also the huge hole I made in his lines. He may get a couple units out, but not many. Too many ZOC.

Southern Zone 2 Turn 7

here you can see the bottom side of the hole with my armor starting to make the south ward turn. He either cuts and runs or I am going to pocket a large number of them.

Southern Zone 3 Turn 7

And here we have forced him to pull his entire line back. Looks like he will not make much of a fight for Odessa. Good, that will free up more units for the advance.

And finally, for anyone who does not know or never tried. A shot of my rail repairs. I place Army level HQ's at intersections to help spread out the repair crews. These 2 Army HQ's were placed 2 turns ago. Already you can see the north and south repair crews going out. I find this works really well.

Mynok -> RE: GC 41 2ndAcr (G) vs Oleg (R) No Oleg please (1/24/2011 10:15:25 PM)

He's gonna resupply that northern pocket in the south. If he whacks the Huns and the Slovaks, He may get most of his armor out.

I would have built some forts like the AI does. If that long front is undefended, well I will have Finns during the winter. I can live with that. Plus if he has not garrisoned those port hexes over there, well then the Finns are not harmless. May not be able to attack, but they can defend.

2ndACR -> RE: GC 41 2ndAcr (G) vs Oleg (R) No Oleg please (1/24/2011 10:19:17 PM)

He might, I had to use too much movement whacking the moles to get where I am. Best I could do with what I had.

Mynok -> RE: GC 41 2ndAcr (G) vs Oleg (R) No Oleg please (1/24/2011 10:20:07 PM)

I'm pretty sure there are fortifications on the Finnish border over there. If he did disband them....he's doomed.

2ndACR -> RE: GC 41 2ndAcr (G) vs Oleg (R) No Oleg please (1/24/2011 10:23:07 PM)

Well, in the next 2 turns, we will see, I got the Finn's heading that way. I have not looked at the Russian side at all, so have no clue if it starts with forts or not. I could not tell you anything about the Russian side actually.

If I remember correctly, yes, there are like 3 or 4 fortified regions on the border. Believe me, the Soviet forces there (23 and 7 armies) are no match for the Finns. The latter are much more experienced, great morale. You really can't stop the Finns. I mean, to do so you should send many divisions. And that would be dangerous when the beast is in the south, trying to swallow your whole country [:)]

EDIT: all you have to know about the Soviets is this... they have an astronomical number of hordes [:D]

2ndACR -> RE: GC 41 2ndAcr (G) vs Oleg (R) No Oleg please (1/24/2011 11:06:25 PM)

That part I already know. LOL

I have offered to pull the unit back. He was surprised and thought I had attacked over the line. He thought he placed a unit there. But if I find another hole, I will start feeding thru.

2ndACR -> RE: GC 41 2ndAcr (G) vs Oleg (R) No Oleg please (1/25/2011 8:10:02 PM)

Turn 8 7 Aug 1941

Opened some more holes, widened others. Mud struck 11th Army so nothing to really report there. He is pulling back very quick there.

North Zone 2

He has pulled back from the river, guess my armor break thru made him worry some. But now he is in the danged swamps and mountains. I am thinking about shifting all my armor towards the Center area and then turn north from there.

NOTE: All screen shots are after end turn manual recon. And forgive the crude drawing.

2ndACR -> RE: GC 41 2ndAcr (G) vs Oleg (R) No Oleg please (1/25/2011 8:12:03 PM)

Central Zone 2

Here we have enlarged our beach head across the Dnepr. I am thinking of sending all armor towards the north. Recon shows nothing behind his front line except the stray unit.

[image]local://upfiles/9971/0EDD4E864C20435897BC47F2111F3059.jpg[/image]

2ndACR -> RE: GC 41 2ndAcr (G) vs Oleg (R) No Oleg please (1/25/2011 8:14:04 PM)

Central Zone 3

I am firmly across the River and almost to Gomel. Recon shows hardly anything there. I am going to aim for the hole.

2ndACR -> RE: GC 41 2ndAcr (G) vs Oleg (R) No Oleg please (1/25/2011 8:17:35 PM)

Southern Zone 1

And I have strongly pocketed 20 Div, 4 brigades. They die next turn. Armor has reached the Dnepr south of Kiev. He has strong forces here and since recon of every hex in the red square shows nothing there, that is where the 2 Panzer Div, 1 SS Div are going to head. I airlifted 200 tons of fuel to each unit. With luck, I can get across the river and start to form a large pocket at Kiev.

2ndACR -> RE: GC 41 2ndAcr (G) vs Oleg (R) No Oleg please (1/25/2011 8:18:15 PM)

And finally, Casualty report as of Turn 8

[image]local://upfiles/9971/A89EAA95F1A549C1828F2C3F0EF79C20.jpg[/image]

2ndACR -> RE: GC 41 2ndAcr (G) vs Oleg (R) No Oleg please (1/25/2011 8:19:57 PM)

Much to my demise, I am seriously thinking of advising him to give up the full linear defense even though he has been pretty good about pulling back once I break thru. Oleg is leaving some really big holes in his lines with hardly a road block to slow me down if I get thru.

2ndACR -> RE: GC 41 2ndAcr (G) vs Oleg (R) No Oleg please (1/26/2011 3:31:41 AM)

Turn 9 done.

Nothing major to report. he has pulled back in some places. He plugged the hole above Kiev so I did not push there. Once my infantry close up, I will force my way across the Dnepr and then release my armor.

The pocket died today.

Mynok -> RE: GC 41 2ndAcr (G) vs Oleg (R) No Oleg please (1/26/2011 3:58:34 AM)

You lost an awful lot for Turn 9.

2ndACR -> RE: GC 41 2ndAcr (G) vs Oleg (R) No Oleg please (1/26/2011 4:28:42 AM)

Yep, did have a double stack panzer corps slam into what I thought was a clear hex.......DOH, it was a swamp with 2 Inf Div. That was 1800 casualties and 41 AFV's right there.

Might need to start turning off the units and checking the ground first.

Mynok -> RE: GC 41 2ndAcr (G) vs Oleg (R) No Oleg please (1/26/2011 5:14:44 AM)

Recon. Recon. Recon.

notenome -> RE: GC 41 2ndAcr (G) vs Oleg (R) No Oleg please (1/26/2011 5:16:48 AM)

your doing very well and the linear defense is leaving much to be desired. However your casualties are incredibly high. Are you using ground support from the luftwaffe? Attaching pioneers to units attacking forts? If not that then all I can suggest is disipline, not attacking units you are planning on isolating anyways.

The casualty reports in this game are fairly wonky. The amount that display, depend on what portion of the turn it is, and how many times you've loaded the turn file.

At this stage of my Axis games, at least half of what is currently showing for 2ndACR's current turn casualties, is already incremented at the beginning of each turn, before any combat. This is solely due to adjacent unit attrition. I usually run 15-20k casualties per turn from attrition alone from about turn 3 onward. The attrition losses for the current turn do not show on later loadings of the turn.

2ndACR -> RE: GC 41 2ndAcr (G) vs Oleg (R) No Oleg please (1/26/2011 6:24:15 AM)

I have been doing Recon, I think I hit the wrong unit on that attack.

Notenome,

I have every support unit assigned. I try to reign in my aggressiveness, but I also think that makes me too cautious. And yes, I hate losing my byte guys. I try to protect them as much as possible. But I did have 16,000 and change just from attrition. Plus there was the attack by the Romanians on Odessa. That was bloody, about 3500 casualties but they took it. I used no Germans on Odessa so they got a bloody nose. But they needed the experience. And I need them to be much better than they are.

But I agree, I am losing too many guys.

randallw -> RE: GC 41 2ndAcr (G) vs Oleg (R) No Oleg please (1/26/2011 7:11:29 AM)

If you dislike attrition losses try playing as the Soviet side. [:'(]

CavLancer -> RE: GC 41 2ndAcr (G) vs Oleg (R) No Oleg please (1/26/2011 7:57:17 AM)

Taking some losses but doing damage as well it looks like. Hopefully those holes you've torn will be too big even for the Russians.

2ndACR -> RE: GC 41 2ndAcr (G) vs Oleg (R) No Oleg please (1/26/2011 8:50:12 PM)

Turn 10

He has pulled back around Pskov but gave me a hole to shoot thru around Vela (what ever that town is called) LOL

Now I will sweep up and east to unhinge his line further. I should be able to pocket 4-6 Div here.
