Southern Zone 2 Turn 10

And here, I got my holes and have shot my armor thru south of Kiev. The river south of Kiev is lightly held right now, but I expect a massive pull back soon. I did catch 4 Div firmly and if lucky will grab another 6-8 Div next turn.

Turn 11

I have pocketed 10 Div near Veli Luki (or what ever that town is called). Armor is sweeping north and threatening to bag another 10 divisions unless he pulls back again. He has been pretty good about pulling back.

Southern Zone 2

Here we have bagged another 9 divisions and forced him to pull his entire defense line back again. He is starting to heavily build up his line along the Dnepr River to prevent me an easy crossing.

Other news, I have built 12 forts today to start digging in for winter along the Dneper River in Central Zone and 3 along the coast in Northern Zone. I know they sap my manpower, but figure I will get a jump on the digging in plus gives me a fall back position. All forts in Central Zone are in towns a of right now.

Oleg has shifted his lines again. In the north, I am outside Novograd. I need to take this city before the mud.

Not sure I made a wise decision getting my armor in the blasted mountains. But I blasted a hole and they were all there, so in I went. If I can get thru here, maybe I can cause him to pull back again.

Slowly pushing him back. I have opened a hole in his lines, hope he pulls back again. Starting to want my armor back in this area. But too late now. Either he pulls back or face a pocket south of Smolensk.

Solid wall around Kiev. I need to break thru and pocket this entire thing. XL Panzer Corp has arrived and seriously thinking about pushing them thru the hole above Kiev. Even contemplating shifting the other AGC Panzer Corp up there from south of Kiev.

Pocketed 3 div this turn. Got a second hole in 11th Army sector and blasted my armor thru. Recon shows light defense east of Denpr River, but if he pulls back, that will change quick. God, I hate crossing major rivers.

Here is the 11th Army hole I made. Tempted to make a mad dash for the river and see if I get lucky. But hate rescuing my Panzers if they get isolated.

Your opponent decided to defend a few hexes in the SW on the western side of the Dnepr; it sort of goes against some thinking, since they'd have to retreat across the river, but they are in good D terrain, and reducing them will be a chore.

In the south you might want to move one German division a few hexes south to help the Rumanian attacks; I know some people would consider them a waste of time, but if you eventually need them badly you'd want their morale ceiling to be as high as possible.

I have avoided using them in headlong attacks but they have cleared many pockets and assisted in "pretty good" odd attacks. They are getting there slowly. Shifting some help to them is on my agenda, just wanted to blast a hole and needed the firepower.

Oh, he has fought for just about every inch of ground. Only when he smells the big break thru does he pull back big time. Those damn mountains south of Kiev are a pain in the keister.

Interesting on his part. Looks like AGN is done for now for the most part outside of grabbing Novgorod. If you can get into that rough and get dug in, he will have a heck of a time kicking you out in the winter. Rough is well.. rough.

I don't know about cracking the Dnepr in the south where you are at currently. Even if you do, you are likely to meet a wall of units on the other side and run out of time to do anything weather wise. I imagine his fort values are high in front of Kiev, but would look to knock those down to tidy up the lines. Digging that many units out of rough that are dug in is just going to be really painful, so I almost wonder if you don't take a pass on doing it.

If he is not careful and presents you the opportunity, I would try to pocket that line in the bend. It is cracking now, but if he tries to hold it longer, thinking you might try going north to break the river line, you might be able to get all that stuff instead and look to get across further up the river line where it is likely to be weaker.

Something else is he is shoving a pile of cav units in the line. I would be looking to kill as many of those as possible. The fewer cav units he has during the winter, the better you like it.

We have made 5 break thru's on the enemy line. 1 in the north, 2 in the Center and 2 in the south.

Northern Break out

Here we have broken thru the enemy line with armor. Not keen on them being in the woods, but will take what I can get. Was really worried about the mountains, now I will bypass them if I can.

Central Break Thru

Below Smolensk, we have broken the enemy line and armor starting to widen the breach. Also if you look across from Gomel, I have 2 Panzer Corps ready to cross the river and head to the south to encircle Kiev.

Southern Breakout

I am across the Dnepr. I have a Panzer Div and Mech div across, I have another full Panzer Corp with additional forces ready to cross the river. They will head north to encircle Kiev. He will either flee Kiev or I might have him.

Southern Break Thru number 2

11th Army smashes a hole and a Panzer Corp goes across the river. They will sweep north and east of the Dnepr. But also am seriously thinking of replacing with infantry and shifting to the northern crossing to help with the Kiev pocket I plan to form.

Plan for now is to pocket that entire area. I will even do so during the mud if I have to. Finish in the snow then hunker down for winter.

wonder if he put too much stuff up N...Those lines off novgo and S of lenningrad are stacked-looks like he is strong at each hex, almost too strong.

He does not want to lose Leningrad or allow me to link with Finns that is for sure. Been a slog up there since turn 4. He has put up a really good defense over all. He is quick to spot the impending pocket coming and starts the fall back to new positions. He gets a lot to safety, but will sacrifice units to hold me as long as possible. If I had another infantry Corp or 2 up there, I could smash him. But the front is already too long for a decent coverage IMO.

I know people do it all the time, but I hate holes in my line that a sneaky human could slip thru.

Well, the 11th Army break is the weakest. Main thing is to get thru the level 3 and level 4 forts he built down there. The break thru across the Dnepr proper has the 2 Panzer Corp sitting just east and south of Gomel to head south. The breakthru above that one, can move south if I need it to, hate to do that, but it is very tempting. That is a lot of units around Kiev.

-maybe assumed your XLII would be up there instead of way south, I know with all this emphasis on the forum about taking leningrad being a must, which I think is proving almost impossible against a good soviet player, especially those who reinforce it, its looking like a good thing the XLII isnt in the swamps, and all those small rivers and rough terrain and heavy woods, and that they are down in the steppes

We are back in business.

I knocked a hole on the north side, but he stopped me. But in the south, I ripped thru and have 2 div almost to the northern side. They ripped thru a bunch of air fields and captured about 100 tons of fuel.

He either pulls back completely from Kiev or I will bag a ton of units.

Wow 2ndACR, that's definitely what I would call "hardcore mechanized action". I'm having a game with sitito who has a very similar approach to the one you've shown on this game.

I like a lot your play style, and I think I know how Oleg feels right now [:(] I guess he'll end up using checkerboards to slow you down once his Ukraine defense collapses (something which is about to happen).

Your losses are very similar to those of my opponent at this stage. BTW, how does the Luftwaffe look on your game? How high are your operational losses?

Anyways, a great game [sm=00000613.gif] a pleasure to watch :)

That was a very bold move. Will be interesting to see how he will react. If I were him I would switch to checkerboard south of Dnepropetrovsk to switch as many forces as possible north to cover Poltava. I would also muster all the forces downstream of Cherkassy to crush with a Bear hug that PzDiv you splitted in to KGs. Expect that unit to suffer very heavy losses. KGs can be pushed around like a rag doll. He'll probably isolate the PzDiv and the MotDiv around Sumy and Poltava. If Oleg's mindset right now is what I imagine, he'll apply a LOT of pressure on them.

All in all, it's probable that you'll get a whole PanzerKorps mauled. But you just rendered irrelevant his Dnepr line. That's very huge and exposes him to suffer devastating losses in a couple turns.

I also see he used his cavalry to bolster his frontline. Too bad for him: I always try to keep them as a second echelon. As pointed out by BigAnorak and Flaviusx they're the only mobile forces you can count on to counter this kind of offensives. They'll would have been very useful to make you pay dear for your mischief [:'(]

I saw you sent one (?) PzKorps to the Lake Ilmen - Seliger sector. Now I guess you miss those panzers south of Smolensk, don't you? [:)]

Be careful with that. German air production is ridiculous compared with Soviet's. You'll have a tough time if by autumn the only planes flying over Russia are the ones with red stars on their wings.

He pulled back the Kiev pocket before I could close it. I got about 12 div that will die.

But I am firmly across the Dnepr and he is out of his forts. Rats.

Well...now you will definitely get an isolated Panzer or 3. With all that cav in the area, you might find it a bit sticky extracting that one near the Sula bend. I'd hook those OKH troops up to a real HQ before trying to free them up.

He clearly used rail movement to extract most of his troops. Tough that you couldn't bust that rail line with 2nd Panzer.

Those units are assigned to a Corp HQ that is assigned to OKH. All units except 3 up north have Corp HQ assigned.

Yep, 2nd Panzer got stopped cold at that river line.
