5thGuardsTankArmy -> Slaughter of the Allied CV/BB Fleet - Combat 1944 (1/29/2011 10:16:18 AM)

My Opponent tried to make a push, it is summer of 1944.
He has had huge logistical problems due to my bases at Diego Garcia, Pago Pago and New Zealand.

After a very long and powerfull Strategic Air Campaign against my forward bases in the Southern Resource area my opponent landed at Kopeng ...
But he lost his fleet in the process and the IJN/IJA will hold Kopeng.

His approach was first engaged by the IJN Submarine force, to be followed by a strike of 3000 Aircrafts launched from 15 bases.
All areas are heavelly buildt up, and this was the weekest spot in my line.

Exp: Allied Player - Have played arround 10 games WITP/AE
Exp: Japan Player - Have played arround 12 games WITP/AE

Who say that a military victory as Japan in 1944 is impossible?

Wow, I wonder if that sets a record for most number of carriers sunk in one battle.

Is your opponent going to continue the game ?

Of Course, but we have also started a new game.

Terminus -> RE: Slaughter of the Allied CV/BB Fleet - Combat 1944 (1/29/2011 10:41:22 AM)

Your opponent brought those losses on himself by making his task forces that big.

Of course, I had nothing to do with it. [;)]
He had many Carriers and a problem to him in supporting very many smaller ones due to other losses earlyer in the war.
Normally he would go with 200 Planes pr CVTF in 44, but a bit hard in this situation due to the overall situation.

FOW -> RE: Slaughter of the Allied CV/BB Fleet - Combat 1944 (1/29/2011 11:25:54 AM)

Is this a Scenario 2 game?

Looking on those attacks on the Allied TFs the Jap fighters were outnumbered by the CAP at least 3 to 1 - yet they shot down about 4 times their losses [X(]
Either Jap pilot quality was v.good or the USN pilots were crap.

Allied TF composition does seem strange - (but i've noticed the combat report will group all the ships from different TFs in a hex in one report for each air attack).

Nemo121 -> RE: Slaughter of the Allied CV/BB Fleet - Combat 1944 (1/29/2011 11:27:07 AM)

Well, difficult or not you are setting yourself up for a slaughter if you don't do it. You obviously had a good defensive arrangement but, really, his CV TF composition was a huge liability.

I also wonder about USN pilot quality on those ships vs IJAAF and IJNAF quality. It seems to me there must have been a bit of a mismatch going on here.

Yes the combat report will group all the ships from different TFs in a hex in one report for each air attack, it did also in this one.

Allied Pilots was standard (55+), Japanese pilots was more experienced (78+), the Frank is also IMHO superior to the Hellcat if used properly.
Due to weather 40% of the Japanese strike bases did not launch, and the Japanese Carrier force only launched Fighters (A6M5 and A6M5c). I feel that I could done a far better job if the weather would been better.

HansBolter -> RE: Slaughter of the Allied CV/BB Fleet - Combat 1944 (1/29/2011 11:37:06 AM)

Two questions.

Why where so many Hellcats slaughtered?

Why launch a campaign into the heart of Japanese LBA? Why not a campaign against more isolated islands like the Marshals and the Marianas that would preclude such a huge concentration of Japanese LBA?

I don't know.
I had 3 Divisions pr island there, mabye he knew about it from Intel?

I don't know, I can't anwser your question.

Nemo121 -> RE: Slaughter of the Allied CV/BB Fleet - Combat 1944 (1/29/2011 11:57:30 AM)

I think we need to look at pilot experience as a major culprit.

The difference between a 55 Air Skill pilot and a 78 ( almost 80 ) Air Skill pilot is HUGE!!!! Those Japanese pilots can expect a 3 to 1 exchange rate with that sort of differential all other things being equal. The gap in ability between 55 and 75 to 80 is massive. No wonder the USN fighters did so poorly. With 55 Air Skill pilots this was always going to be an inverse Turkey Shoot.

stuman -> RE: Slaughter of the Allied CV/BB Fleet - Combat 1944 (1/29/2011 12:08:24 PM)

Well live and learn ! I bet your opponent will not make the same mistake twice.

It's a good object lesson for any of us.

FatR -> RE: Slaughter of the Allied CV/BB Fleet - Combat 1944 (1/29/2011 2:01:29 PM)

Frank, I believe, is just superior to Hellcat, except in service rating (doesn't matter for the first day of battle among developed airbases). More speed, way more MVR, armament might be considered worse, depending on how damage calculations work, but I'm not sure. The only thing that Hellcat has going to it is better ceiling and slightly better climb. But this advantage is not nearly as important in huge battles like this, IMO, as it is usually likely to be lost after the first clash. Add to this pilot disparity... the Allied player really shouldn't have neglected pilot training so much, and really shouldn't have moved into the LBA nest with his airforce in such condition.

Canoerebel -> RE: Slaughter of the Allied CV/BB Fleet - Combat 1944 (1/29/2011 2:25:43 PM)

Edited to change lengthy, boring, duplicative analysis to a more concise: *shudder*.

Captain Cruft -> RE: Slaughter of the Allied CV/BB Fleet - Combat 1944 (1/29/2011 3:16:46 PM)

Shudder indeed.

It looks like most of the damage was done by the Frances and its torpedo, along with the Jill. I wonder what ratings those pilots had?

Overall though, this just shows what an immense advantage PDU On is to Japan. Most of those Franks would be Oscars without it, the Frances would be Betties and even Nells and then where would you be ...

castor troy -> RE: Slaughter of the Allied CV/BB Fleet - Combat 1944 (1/29/2011 3:28:11 PM)

I have to question the skills of the carrier based fighter pilots, because they took far more losses against the enemy escorts than they were able to dish out, this while outnumbering the enemy. This pretty much looks like one side is highly investing time in pilot training, while the other (losing) side seems to use 50 skilled replacement pilots.

edit: nevermind, my assumption was answered a few posts below the combat report. So what to say? No wonder the Allied lost hard and the main reason is written in the two lines above. And when the Allied had years time to do training due to the overal situation anyway, then I donīt really pity them for suffering such a defeat. You canīt play with one side doing training and the other one ignoring it. Well you can, vs the AI because the AI isnīt doing it anyway.

Heya, "5th Guards Tank Army". For being such a prolific player of AE, it's very surprising that you're such a new poster on this forum. Might we recognize you by other names, perhaps? [8|]

Some questions: How would you know what the precise experience of the Allied pilots was in this encounter? Does your Allied opponent routinely divulge such OPSEC issues in your games?

Also, sounds like some of the bases you have are unusual for a 1944 game. Has your Allied opponent not seen fit to evict you from New Zealand yet? Very curious approach for such an 'experienced' Allied player.

In 44, the USN could invade almost any base on the map. How did you know he was coming? Did he loiter off the base for 3 days so you could rush planes, ships and subs to the area? 3,000 planes is a lot, and for you to have that many there, being the weakest spot in your empire, seems odd. You don't have dozens of CV's. For them to be in that spot lets me know you knew he was coming. What tipped you off?

Generally, the USN had 2-3 days of invasion/base suppression before the IJN could show up. They didn't know exactly when and where they would strike. Yes, they had ideas of where and when they would strike next, but not the exact day and base. How did you have masses and masses of trained air groups and your entire navy (assumption here) ready for him the day he was invading?

Am I reading the reports wrong, and he already unloaded his troops and suppressed the nearby airfields before you smacked him with your airforce and navy?

Canoerebel -> RE: Slaughter of the Allied CV/BB Fleet - Combat 1944 (1/29/2011 7:53:55 PM)

I believe Chickenboy and Bradley are right. Something just isn't right about this entire report. This looks very much like results scored against the AI, not a player with plenty of WitP/AE experience. And Timor is the only place the Allied player can invade in 1944, when the Japanese player still holds Diego Garcia, Pago Pago, and bases in New Zealand? Riiiiiiiiiiight. And the OP has played 12 games of WitP/AE and suddenly registers on the forums in in January 2011 and begins posting? Riiiiiiiiiight.

I will return to read only mode, I like it best that way anyway.

To say how I knew, I knew becáuse I knew he had 900 ships in Pearh weeks before the Attack, so I figured it would be Java or Timor region.
I then also tracked his fleet for 13 days from the loading of the troops in Pearth to the arrival of the troops to the beaches. Using Submarines and eventually Norm's from AV's. I had 14-20 bases in all theaters, I moved the planes to the theater when he approached.

Mabye this does not fit in your AFB mind, in that case I appology I wasted your time.

Have a good day!

Of course! A 900-ship Allied invasion armada at Pearl signals an invasion of Timor or Java, but doesn't in any way suggest that a Japanese-held New Zealand or Pago Pago or Hokkaido or Sikhalin Island might be the target.

I did not see New Zeland or Pago as an option due to it being Summer of 1944, and he was so far behind schadule that taking New Zeland at that point would not make him able to get the VP needed by 1/45 to not lose the game at that point due to VP score.
