Nhah, I disagree with JeffK. Q-Ball did not quit because CR did what almost every Allied player does (especially in Scenario 2). You did the Sir Robin thing to survive. Q-Ball had to anticipate that type of thing in some variation or another. The simple fact is that Q-Ball got involved in a big way with a sparlking, shiny new top (WitE) and just dumped the game. Very unsporting. As a result of his action, I'd never play a game with him.

Chez is the JAPS in this Scenario 2 game for God's sake. However, he has sat on his thumbs, diddled about, squandered his fleet, ignored a MAJOR threat at the door of Singapore until it festered into gangruene (sp), taken his remaining fleet on pointless, fuel burning sailing excursions and otherwise made mistake after mistake.

Yes...he has probably lost his enthusiam for this game. However, it was by no means the fault of our AAR host/author. It is the result of badly planned and extremely poor play by him. I honestly expected much better from the Empire.

Anyway, that is my not so humble view of it.

I dont disagree, but am trying to find an excuse for the game style.

Ketza -> RE: Das darf nicht var sein! (1/19/2012 2:17:55 AM)

My 2 cents to help the post count!

You have played a superb game. I assume your opponent is both a skilled player as well as a reader of AARs for both WITP as well as AE. He has ignored the most obvious course of action for whatever reason and let a splinter in his side turn into a limb and now an entire tree.

Its not your fault for planting it. Its his fault for letting it grow.

I would offer terms and if he declines, pursue a course of action that is a challenge to yourself as a player. I for one would still be interested in reading your AAR and would look forward to how you end in the war in 44...

Post count +1

Yeah, I agree. I resolved to only reinforce (as allowed by enemy activity) but not go for FP even if I could force it.

As one of the aforementioned 1x1s all I can say is, "Phew"! I will just happily ignore Sumatra and concentrate on Nome!

Wa

You did allow the 1st and 2nd Marine Divisions in...

LOL, as another one of those 1x1s, I allowed FP and was dishonorable and elected to sue for peace. It's a game over situation for the Japanese. It's not just fuel. The airbase can be used by the Allies to smash everything within a 25 hex range. Ports, facilities, factories, etc.. Can't base ships virtually anywhere in the region, even with CAP. Too risky. Once Palembang gets large enough, 6+ divisions can't even dislodge it.

I played in a 4x4 where FP happened. There's not enough bombardment, airpower, anything. It begs the question if terrain and forts are too powerful, but that's a discussion for another day. Since those two games, I've focused a great deal of beginning japanese assets on taking Palembang and I see the Allies are countering with Force Z defending Singkawang.

You might want to offer a peace and see if he wants to restart. I don't think there's any master plan coming.

Well, if you do play another game at least there is no possibility of being the first allied player to lose to Japanese autovic, since that has already happened. If you want an additional challenge, I'd change the HR about paying full pp to move out of borders to each side can pay the cheap price for 2 divisions a month while the Japanese invasion bonus lasts (though I'd suggest not allowing hq swaps and such if they still exist, and perhaps requiring full pp in addition to the existing fee to be paid by the end of 1943, lets you frontload now at the cost of less later?). That or play scenario 10 and see carrier parity into 44 I think even without losing anything (plus Japan basically gets a free Palembang worth of extra oil production owned at the start of the game compared to scenario 2 and something like twice the resource production). It'd be quite a challenge and bloodbath against a Japanese player with any experience.

I missed that, Schlemiel. Who won auto-vic? Need to read that AAR!

Possible...but I WILL get to them eventually...

vicberg -> RE: Das darf nicht var sein! (1/19/2012 7:24:00 AM)

I had a game where I had a huge victory point lead, sunk 4 allied carriers by March, 42, invaded OZ down to Sydney, took Perth, and I quit the game because I was busy and it was obvious my opponent wasn't actually playing.  If the Japanese are close to auto-victory, the game doesn't usually last that long.

Schlemiel -> RE: Das darf nicht var sein! (1/19/2012 7:30:19 AM)

The opponent in this aar http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=3001937 won the autovic as the Japanese.  They are continuing the game past it though.  You probably missed it because it was over before the guy posted it, has only been around a little while.  Japanese took India up to the gates of Karachi (Karachi is semi beseiged after reinforcement in 1943), most of New Zealand, and crushed the Aussie divisions while taking Perth and northern Australia.  Score at 1943 was like 4.5:1 actually.  Pics of the auto vic on page 8 or 9, I think.

Miller -> RE: Das darf nicht var sein! (1/20/2012 3:23:35 PM)

If nothing is happening, make something happen. Sure you have to build up your logistical chain before any major offensive, but put out some feelers and try to get a response. Maybe a few CL/DD raider groups operating in the South China Sea, a few extended range 4E raids on ports and such like. Make him do something. Maybe it might help convince him that all is lost and you can agree an end to the game and move on to the next opponent. Remember he is playing with PDU off........so a lot of his airforce will still be stuck with crappy worthless a/c that are of little or no threat, regardless of scn2.

I think he is praying you offer him an honourable surrender at the moment and hates having to work the turns. This usually happens to the vast majority of Jap players at some stage in the game, but not in late 1942!

Canoerebel -> RE: Das darf nicht var sein! (1/20/2012 7:54:58 PM)

Steve sent the wrong turn.  [:(]

Miller, the Allies are working to open up the area north of Sumatra.  Right now, Singkawang is the key to the theater (see maps posted two pages back).  If the Allies take that base, it "broadens the shoulders" of the Allied position considerably.  The Allies will be able to send shipping in the Java Sea with little risk of enemy air retaliation.  IE, the seas north of Palembang and Oosthaven will be controlled by the Allies.

Right now (and for many months), Singkawang is held by three IJ units, at least two of which are weak.  The Allies have a very big army prepping for the base.  The last piece - an Indian division - departed Cochin, India, about three days ago.  It is possible that the Allies could have 1,000 highly-prepped AV ready to move on the base in less than a month.  (Of course, that should prompt Steve to reinforce, but who knows how he'll react).

zuluhour -> RE: Das darf nicht var sein! (1/20/2012 9:16:49 PM)

How do you send the wrong turn? Theres only (1) 010.pws in my save folder. Please advise, I may need a good stall move if things become to Greyjoy...errrrr.....hairy.

Canoerebel -> RE: Das darf nicht var sein! (1/20/2012 10:17:33 PM)

There seem to be a number of ways:  (1) forgot to click "end turn" button and the file you send to your opponent will ask for your password, not his; (2) inadvertently save the files to the wrong folder, thus sending an old turn; and (3) sending the files for a different game (a pretty common occurrence when you happen to be playing more than one PBEM).

Cribtop -> RE: Das darf nicht var sein! (1/21/2012 6:46:55 AM)

Or, sending the turn in a "beer enabled" state. [:D]

Canoerebel -> RE: Das darf nicht var sein! (1/21/2012 6:00:24 PM)

10/19/42

I owe Steve an apology.  This time the problem with the turn files was my doing.  I had inadvertently saved them to an old WitP save folder, so they weren't showing up on the AE menu.  My bad.  My apologies to Steve for probably driving him to drink trying to figure out what was happening.

China:  The Chinese whack an IJ brigade near Sinyang, destroying 100 squads.

NoPac:  The reinserted Allied fighters (two small P-39 and one medium-sized P-40E) really tore into some Japanese bomber raids over Paramushiro, knocking down nearly 50 aircraft at a cost of about ten.  No sign of imminent counter invasion.

DEI:  Still no opposition to Allied troop TFs at Toboali, Billiton and Ketapang.  Each of these TFs is carrying just remnants - mainly slow-unloading heavy machinery - so the risk to the Allies is small should Japan jump on them.  Everything continues to look good on Sumatra and the Java Sea bases.

Burma:  The Allies are unable to dislodge the weak IJ garrison at Toungoo due to forts (three) and terrain.  A fully-prepped Indian brigade is on the way to lend a hand.  Japan has some trouble in Burma.  I think Steve will use his airforce to try to maintain the status quo.

Canoerebel -> RE: Das darf nicht var sein! (1/22/2012 12:32:48 PM)

10/20/42 and 10/21/42

Java Sea:  Alot of Allied shipping at the various Java Sea bases bringing in supply and garrison troops.  Both Ketapang and Pontianak have 140 AV fully prepped.  Pontianak has an Indian engineering unit that will help with airfield and fort construction.  Lots more reinforcements inbound to Oosthaven, including engineers and base forces that will come forward into the Java Sea.  Soon, the Allies will move forward from Oost to Pontianak the big fighting units prepped for Singkawang.

Sumatra:  No sign of menacing enemy activity anywhere in this region.  I've bumped the Allied carriers back a bit further to the southwest.  They will probably retire to India in about two weeks to upgrade if nothing happens between now and then.  Until then, the plan is to react to any major enemy commitment in NoPac before winter sets in by triggering a major Allied offensive towards Singkawang.

Burma:  The Allies brushed aside weak opposition in the jungle south of Toungoo.  The Very Happy Stalemate at Magwe continues.  The Allies are working on assembling the force needed to take Toungoo.

princep01 -> RE: Das darf nicht var sein! (1/22/2012 6:46:05 PM)

The bubbling caldron continues to heat and will soon boil over to burn the hide off the lanquishing Japanese.

Canoerebel -> RE: Das darf nicht var sein! (1/22/2012 9:55:10 PM)

10/22/42

NoPac:  Nine days until winter sets in.  No sign of imminent enemy counterinvasion, but I still think it's gotta come.  If it doesn't, I will send a peace "feeler" to Steve.  If he isn't going to fight for the Kuriles, where he has every advantage, the war just needs to end.

DEI:  More troop convoys inbound to Oosthaven.  Everything looks good for the Allies on Sumatra and the key bases in and on the Java Sea.  Allied fighters chewed up a bunch of Zeroes over Padang.  Things do not look good for Japan.

Burma:  The Allies have another 160 AV on the way to Toungoo - 140 of which is fully prepped for the base.  Barring a surprise, this will be enough to take the base.  ETA for the next attack is about one week.

The "Struggle" Against Japan: No changes anywhere. Everything continues to look good for the Allies.

Why this Game is Over: In his halting advance across the DEI, Steve left many bases under Allied control. That's a mistake the Allies are taking advantage of in occupying key outposts like Billiton, Ketapang and Pontianak.

Sambas, a base between the Japanese garrisons at Singkawang and Kuching, is another that Steve didn't take. The Allies have held this base with nine air support personnel - nothing else - since early 1942. A single Japanese AV could have marched in from Singkawang in five days via the yellow road and captured it. But it has lanquished in Allied hands for much of 1942.

I figured Steve was at least keeping tabs on the base to make sure the Allies weren't reinforcing on the sly. But today, after a year of ignoring the base, Steve sent an air attack (copied and pasted below) that indicates he had no idea what the Allies have at the base. He must have just noticed there was a garrison, deduced that the Allies had just occupied the base and were about to build it, and figured that it posed a big threat to Singkawang and Kuching. IE, he has ignored this base for months. You can't do things like this and a PBEM match.

Grfin Zeppelin -> RE: Das darf nicht var sein! (1/23/2012 3:21:20 PM)

So the game is finished ?

Canoerebel -> RE: Das darf nicht var sein! (1/23/2012 3:27:31 PM)

No, the game still goes on.  Steve hasn't even hinted at giving up.

As stated previously, I intend to approach him on November 1, game time, if he hasn't by then counterinvaded Onnekotan Jima and Paramushiro Jima.  That, to me, would indicate that he truly has no idea of how to try something - anything - to make the game a contest.  His apparent misconstruing of Sambas will be additional evidence I will cite in this regard. Two other major things that just shouldn't have happened in the game:  Leaving IJA divisions in China isolated so that they can be mauled one or two at a time, time after time after time; and getting IJA divisions truly isolated for no reason at Magwe and Padang.

Ketza -> RE: Das darf nicht var sein! (1/23/2012 11:18:07 PM)

He really seems to have given up. How much time is it taking to get a turn back?

Canoerebel -> RE: Das darf nicht var sein! (1/24/2012 12:27:55 AM)

We're still maintaining our usual pace of about a turn a day.

I could be wrong in my interpretation of Steve's air raid on Sambas.  I don't think so, but it's possible.  But, there are so many things going on in the game, and for long, long stretches of time, that just shouldn't be happening.  Those things taken together lead me to wonder about Steve's focus.

Canoerebel -> RE: Das darf nicht var sein! (1/24/2012 7:00:08 AM)

10/24/42

Sambas, Borneo (or Sarawak or someplace on that big island...):

Refer to my post for the 23rd and you'll understand why the following attack on Sambas made me laugh. The Japanese are really roughing up the nine support squads at this base....

Morning Air attack on Sambas , at 57,88

Weather in hex: Heavy cloud

Raid spotted at 33 NM, estimated altitude 26,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 9 minutes

Japanese aircraft
Ki-21-Ic Sally x 27
Ki-21-IIa Sally x 121
Ki-48-Ib Lily x 26

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-21-IIa Sally: 1 damaged
Ki-48-Ib Lily: 1 damaged

Allied ground losses:
19 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 3 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Port hits 19
Port supply hits 5

South China Sea: Seadragon reports BB Kirishima and CAs Tone and Takao near Cam Ranh Bay. This is very useful intel. Japan is bringing in some heavyweights. The Allies will take some losses when the Japanese come in swinging, but it's too late now.

DEI: The Allies continue to make good progress in bringing reinforcements and supply forward from Oosthaven to the Java Sea rim bases. It won't be long now - perhaps just a few weeks, before the Allies can begin to draw down the Sumatra garrison to move forward in a big way. I think Singkawang, Borneo, and Merak, Java are the two highest priority targets.

NoPac: No sign of imminent enemy counterinvasion. From the perspective of the Allies, this is great. From the perspective of competition in a PBEM game, this is lamentable.

obvert -> RE: Das darf nicht var sein! (1/24/2012 12:37:49 PM)

6 days and counting until some decision making.

As always, your use of good planning and solid tactics would most likely render any attempts to react in the DEI somewhat futile. In the Kuriles I think it's somewhat different, as you state, and he would have a good chance to retake the area.

As you have a date set to say something, I wonder if a quick SCTF raid or if possible a 4E raid into enemy territory before Nov 1 might punctuate the point that this game is no longer competitive.
