The overall situation in the south. I don't know if I will make it. We will see [8D]

Turn 35

12 february 1942

YESSSS! He gives up! That's what 2ndACR wrote on the email: "Well, they are toast. No hope for them. Once you break thru the forts, I cannot stop you and counter attacks are futile basically".

And that's what I have seen when I have opened the turn. Had he opened a corridor maybe (and only maybe) he would have saved perhaps one or two units. I can't advance this turn on the Bryansk Front [:)] What's in the pic-a-nic basket? 5 infantry and 1 Panzer divisions (Germans the lot of them).

TulliusDetritus -> RE: Stalin's in the gulag - Tullius (Soviet) vs 2ndACR (Axis) (5/9/2011 6:16:25 PM)

In the south, it looks like I destroyed a Rumanian division: shattered thing. This means it is gone for good if I well understood! [8D]

TulliusDetritus -> RE: Stalin's in the gulag - Tullius (Soviet) vs 2ndACR (Axis) (5/9/2011 7:00:05 PM)

This turn only 2 fronts can be active:

1) Southwestern
2) Southern

TulliusDetritus -> RE: Stalin's in the gulag - Tullius (Soviet) vs 2ndACR (Axis) (5/9/2011 8:19:07 PM)

Ok... In the south it's a massacre [8|] I was not expecting to do that...

Total retreats this turn: 50 [8D]

Anyway, Leningrad attacks (not advancing). Only 2 and both: held

TulliusDetritus -> RE: Stalin's in the gulag - Tullius (Soviet) vs 2ndACR (Axis) (5/9/2011 8:22:34 PM)

Kalinin Front. As you can see, 2ndACR is very strong here [8D]

TulliusDetritus -> RE: Stalin's in the gulag - Tullius (Soviet) vs 2ndACR (Axis) (5/9/2011 8:24:18 PM)

Quite many attacks in the Western Front thing [8D] Not advancing.

TulliusDetritus -> RE: Stalin's in the gulag - Tullius (Soviet) vs 2ndACR (Axis) (5/9/2011 8:28:12 PM)

Bryansk Front attacks. Not advancing. A Tank Brigade advanced because there was a gap [;)]

TulliusDetritus -> RE: Stalin's in the gulag - Tullius (Soviet) vs 2ndACR (Axis) (5/9/2011 8:35:47 PM)

And the Southwestern Front Massacres Part II (aka southern part).

TulliusDetritus -> RE: Stalin's in the gulag - Tullius (Soviet) vs 2ndACR (Axis) (5/9/2011 8:37:58 PM)

A dangerous thing in this Southwestern Front [sm=00000622.gif]

TulliusDetritus -> RE: Stalin's in the gulag - Tullius (Soviet) vs 2ndACR (Axis) (5/9/2011 8:50:39 PM)

Southern Front. Finally! The big cities will be mine. And I guess two German divisions should be in the bag as well! [8D] In the south, I am concentrating mobile forces... I will infiltrate the enemy front, apparently empty. Crimea, here we go! [sm=00000622.gif]

Sabre21 -> RE: Stalin's in the gulag - Tullius (Soviet) vs 2ndACR (Axis) (5/9/2011 9:00:34 PM)

You guys evidently agreed to some house rules. If you have both updated to the latest beta patch, there really is no need for it in future games.

TulliusDetritus -> RE: Stalin's in the gulag - Tullius (Soviet) vs 2ndACR (Axis) (5/9/2011 9:10:34 PM)

Yes, we updated to latest patch. It's a history thing though [:)] The truth is in the real war the Soviets could not launch a massive assault across the whole front, from the Baltic to the Black seas. The offensive was successful in Moscow area (the main blow against the most dangerous enemy units). But it was a fiasco in Leningrad... In my opinion a general assault IS ahistorical, that is why I will always stick to this rule [:)]

The Winter Offensive was a lesson to the Soviets. It showed the very poor coordination between different fronts. The Germans were trashed, yes, but mostly in Moscow area (the vital objective of the Soviets).

In the games I've tested with 1.04 so far, i am only averaging 35 to 40 attacks as the Soviets during the blizzard with about a third failure rate. I'm seeing the same with some of the other aar's. If someone decides to make a hundred attacks, which is possible, they will end up with a 70% failure rate which doesn't do them any good.

With forts now being able to mitigate some of the blizzard effects, and with less of a morale loss per turn, german froces are quite capable of defending pretty well now come blizzard.

TulliusDetritus -> RE: Stalin's in the gulag - Tullius (Soviet) vs 2ndACR (Axis) (5/9/2011 9:21:08 PM)

On the last 3 or 4 turns I am making much more attacks. And MANY retreats. But of course he was VERY weak in the south, between Orel and Stalino (that's why I launched a Mud Offensive)... In the north and center that's another story: he is well entrenched (2-units stacks in many places with good fort levels). Most attacks would have been against the odds (they were not launched that is).

Turn 36

19 february 1942

Come on, 2ndACR, blizzard is almost over. One more little push!

This turn I cannot advance in the Southwestern Front, which means he might save 2 infantry divisions I was planning to kill [:)] I attacked an adjacent hex, forcing its defenders to retreat but cannot advance and surround the 2 units.

TulliusDetritus -> RE: Stalin's in the gulag - Tullius (Soviet) vs 2ndACR (Axis) (5/12/2011 10:07:50 PM)

Now I've got 36 Guards Rifle Divisions, which has to be a good thing.

TulliusDetritus -> RE: Stalin's in the gulag - Tullius (Soviet) vs 2ndACR (Axis) (5/12/2011 10:11:24 PM)

The two German divisions in Makeevka. 2ndACR keeps airdropping kartoffel and Iron Crosses... I guess I will not wait and attack this same turn. Or maybe not.

TulliusDetritus -> RE: Stalin's in the gulag - Tullius (Soviet) vs 2ndACR (Axis) (5/12/2011 10:16:19 PM)

The Red Army is apparently putting to good use the captured stuff.

TulliusDetritus -> RE: Stalin's in the gulag - Tullius (Soviet) vs 2ndACR (Axis) (5/12/2011 10:22:02 PM)

I'm way too impatient [:)] I attacked. 71 and 295 Infantry Divisions annihilated. Just like the other divisions I have destroyed he had attached them to OKH.

TulliusDetritus -> RE: Stalin's in the gulag - Tullius (Soviet) vs 2ndACR (Axis) (5/12/2011 10:28:43 PM)

In the Southwestern Front I cannot advance. One exception: there was a gap therefore a tank brigade advances [;)]

Klydon -> RE: Stalin's in the gulag - Tullius (Soviet) vs 2ndACR (Axis) (5/12/2011 10:58:57 PM)

What were your impressions of the Cav corps TD?

Outstanding winter offensive btw. Lot of guards units, which is one of the things the Russians want out of the winter. That should give you a good core of units to work with, especially when you can start assembly of infantry corps.
