Shore bombardment against the IJA divisions at PM. I'm curious--what advantage is there to breaking down?

witpqs -> RE: July 10/11 (7/22/2011 3:05:49 PM)

Breaking down divisions into three pieces? The only one that I know of is that they might repair faster and/or take replacements faster in aggregate than the monolithic division.

I think he's nearly out of supply, and unless the Combined Fleet escorts a convoy to PM, he'll be staying that way.

herwin -> July 11/12 (7/26/2011 3:38:40 PM)

July 11/12 1942

Davao becomes untenable for cargo operations. I'll need to redeploy some air cover there.

It appears he's sending a fast transport convoy into PM. It will have to run a gauntlet of four light SAGs.

herwin -> July 12/13 (7/26/2011 7:52:40 PM)

July 12/13 1942

Sub torpedoes miss both sides.

The Nell/Betty losses he took mean that his air operations over PM are restricted to sweeps. About 90 Zeros participate. I've pulled my aircraft out, except for some recon.

Hyuga and Ise spotted off the tail of New Guinea. That suggests there is a bombardment or resupply mission headed to PM. The five light SAGs patrolling between Cooktown and PM prepare for action. No CAP, which is good.

herwin -> July 13/14 (7/27/2011 12:17:30 AM)

July 13/14 1942

More sweeps on PM.

Nothing significant happens.

herwin -> July 14/15 (7/27/2011 3:47:29 PM)

July 14/15 1942

115 Helens hit the dispersal strip (size 1 with 8 Hurricane Is) at Ramree Island. I suppose I touched a raw nerve.

herwin -> July 15/16 (7/27/2011 7:30:06 PM)

July 15/16 1942

My opponent's comment: "IJN still rocks."

The Combined Fleet reappears at PM. More landings there. He ran into my light SAG, whose job was to go into harm's way.

Did the Japanese BBs get any hits in, or was it solely the lighter ships?

Thx -

Ah, that's interesting to know. I usually have difficulty getting my BBs to join the action. I guess that Daylight in Rain did the trick.

He'd like to, but everything he does is done under the protection of the combined fleet, and taking and building up those secondary bases is not part of his planning.

He just squatted on the fast TF with the massed KB. I need to learn how to time my fast transport visits to ports to occur during the night. I tried to use waypoints to do that, but the APDs entered PM during the day while the KB was lurking off Buna. Something like two dozen APDs sunk in PM harbor.

I play the game to learn about why things occurred historically, but I'm not sure learning how to play the game effectively teaches me the right lessons.

July 18/19 1942

I'm thinking about abandoning the South Pacific until I have overwhelming force. The game does not reward 'right-sizing' your forces, and it really, really loves overwhelming mass. Logistics, other than tactical logistics, feh!

Koepang is being invaded. My opponent is apparently not aware of the heavy SAG lurking in the vicinity.

I do have a small question in my mind about the realism of port strikes with torpedoes on little or no notice.

I was under the impression that you were aware of the KB's location in the region. Were you trying to sneak that rather large TF into Port Moresby and get away in one night, in a Tokyo Express type fashion? If so, be aware that the Game has never handled that well.

It operates out of Rabaul. It pops out to Buna when my opponent thinks I'm trying something.

I love the friendly fire casualties.

I'm looking at ways to attract him towards Ndeni, where I can put torpedoes on my PBYs.

herwin -> RE: July 21/22 (8/6/2011 12:42:54 AM)

BTW, I'll have torpedoes on 8-10 squadrons of PBYs operating out of Townsville in a week. The main delay is moving the HQ there. Wish I had known earlier.
