Question for anybody in the group .. I bombed Magwe and destroyed the oil and refinery here quite a long time ago ..now that I own it again .. how much supply has to be in the hex to begin repair? How long will this take? I am thinking once I get Rangoon this will be enough to supply my defensive operations in Burma about 2 full Corps or 5000 -- 6000 AV ..but I am thinking the fuel will have to come from Magwe .. certainly the IJN are not going to make it easy to get supply into the area [;)]

I spent this morning planning and I have come up with the next phase in my Burma campaign. Operation: "Meaningful Kangaroo" I have a strategic goal in mind, but first I have to get the I AUS Corps to Bangkok. The leading group is the 9th AUS Division 10 miles from Katha. The US 43rd division is 60 days from the Burma theater. The map below shows the operational plan. Get the 9th AUS plus some Brit/Indian forces to Chaing Mai on 05 APR 43. These forces begin a march down the railroad trail arriving in Bangkok in time for the Monsoons. Here the rest of the 1 AUS Corps assemble for the next phase of operations. The Indian IV Corps will pull a hook streching their lines toward Raheng and slugging through the jungle at 1 mile per day with the mission of tying down the IJA Corps assembling at Moulmien. Moulmien does not have to be seized -- a "Verdun" attriting IJA forces will accompish the long term goals for the area. We shall see how this unfolds. You need over 10k in supply at a base to be able to repair industry (1000 supply per 1 damaged industry repaired). Therefore, you will need Rangoon open to allow large supply TFs to unload as Magwe will eat up lots of supply. Once you get Moulmein, it should be more difficult for him to interdict TFs at Rangoon. Re-opening the Burma Road should help you out in China. I would use the supply draw buttons to get a large amount of supply into China. Yes, there will be spoilage/losses on the way, but getting supplies to that large army should help out everywhere. Port Blair - do you have troops prepping for this base?? If so, what??

I don't have anything prepping . nor do I have anything that can invade in theater .. I am thinking that if I grab Bangkok supply will increase in the area from light industry, But I am sensing that I will need to supply Rangoon from the sea and ASAP. My main concern is not so much Betty's, but the KB that is patroling the area. I sense this is where the IJ will be making a stand. So my thought is an overland move to cut this area off. I do not want to give away too much in this AAR, but I think I can be in Saigon by September '43. I am taking a different approach in this game because the IJ so under defended this area and then lost 60,000 troops. There is only 60,000 left and most of these are support troops. I think I can take advantage of this, ignore the fact that the IJN control the seas and cut the DEI off from the Home Island by Jan 44.

The map below provides the immediate strategic plan for '43 until Jan '44. My thought is once I AUS Corps is at Bangkok we slide Eastward toward Saigon and Cam Rahn Bay. At the same time the US forces move toward Davao and eventually Puerto Princsa .. the goal .... completely cut the Home Islands from her fuel and oil. From these two bases DB/TB can terrorize any shipping traveling these lanes. The side effects of this position are of deep consequince to the IJ. Fuel is already effecting the IJ economy,but rather than a direct invasion into the DEI, I see this strategic position as the most cost effective means to get the home islands cutoff. I'm looking forward to playing a game or two from the start with stacking limits in place. Burma and China will be different for both sides, but how much is unknown at this time?? Even with the stacking limits installed slightly later than your game's current date, I see my Japanese divisions in Burma as a place they go to die. I have over 12 divisions there now. It seems that your opponent doesn't have enough to slow you down and those rebuilt divisions will have a lot lower experience level once they get back to the front lines.

Just to catch up the reader .. What happend here was sort of unique .. 1. A strategy of indirect projection of force ..and to attack in places where the KB can find me :) 2. The IJ showed their desire for Darwin early on 3. We decided to make Burma our front and though no home rule existed I thought it would be gamey not to buy out stuff headed east .. 4. The IJ obliged this strategy by under-defending Burma and focusing on the traditional Solomon's, NG, Darwin line of axis. Especally within Burma picking open terrain to defend rather than either the Imphal/Wazup line or TYi Gung jungle line .. I think it is absoultely critical to pick a line and start diggin' in. If the Allies are coming .. it is far too late ...[;)] 5. In concert with the invasion of NG/PM & Darwin .. we spung out from Imphal toward Katha ..with 3200 AV The IJ oblidged by moving the 33rd Division. 6. Katha and the 33rd Divsion with BF's were crushed ..they retreated North to never see supply again 7. Once we established on Swebo We then pulled off operation "Skilled Hook" and crossed the Irrawaddy taking Mandalay/Magwe/ .. 8. The IJ are in trouble at this point because we came at forces from multiple directions using armor in open terrain along the Irrawaddy Valley .. they are now trapped. 9. NOW the IJ start bringing in forces. But it is far too late. The 4E's rain hell from above and armor cuts a path toward Prome. The IJ try and strat move out but are caught in opmode by armor .. they can't get unstuck and when the IV Corps arrives .. 20,000 dead .. 10. Now the IJ are forming a line to protect Malay ..and are using the KB to project power to prevent sea traffic .. Soo .. the plan above Meaningful Kangaroo [:D] Move toward Bangkok and then a new operation to seize Vietnam .. I think 6 division dug in at the right points and this becomes an Allied decisive loss because I spent well over 12,000 PP and bogging down these forces in teh Jungle means no means to attack the IJ .. As it is .. I think I have a path toward victory ..

We just hit an interesting software behavior ..look at the maps above and the hexes of Rangoon and Pegu .. my IV CORPS is trying to move into Rangoon .. but .. as soon as I have the MP's to move .. the move gets reset .. What I think is happening is that the IJ are moving units into Rangoon on the same turn as I am moving and the code is resetting the movement back to zero. Else the ZOC from Pegu is somehow involved ... .anyway the IJ get 4 more days to prepare for my arrival .. [:@] In the meantime forces move toward Pegu in case that is the problem .. [8\|] If this force is stuck . this game is over .. [sm=Crazy-1271.gif] We shall see in 4 more turns if I get at least get into Pegu from a non-ZOC hex ..

The bases are out of supply right now, but the troops are in supply as long as they do not stop at a base. The supply is moving right now from Kayelmo, Imphal, Cox's Bazzar and Akayb it seems every 3 days. The most unusuall behavior is as soon as they stop at a base the eat that bases supply up .. so no planes can fly etc .. but as long as I keep out in the jungles . I get supply ... I am not sure if this is intended .. But two more divisions are headed into theater marching from Imphal to Katha ... and over the next 5 weeks 4 armored units are haeded to Africa .. I am in a race against the clock to beat the rains ...

I received an interesting email from my adversary. He now feels that India should not be able to be activated since it was impossible historically. The problem is that my opponent was expecting operation wagonwheel and was fully preparing for this avenue of approach. He moved more than historical amounts of forces into the Solomon's anticipating this move. I did not oblidge. Now the IJ are getting creamed in Burma. I am not sure if the IJ plan to counter my Burma attack or remain positioned for a battle over the Pacific? We shall see how this unfolds .. rationalization is a funny defensive mechinism ..

Likewise, I saw my Japanese opponent sweep through North China with his road supply line extending over 1,000 miles without ever missing a beat. The worst case is the invasion of Northern Oz where Japan can take a small level 0 port using the invasion bonus and then march a massive army 400 miles over what was nothing more than desert track to outflank and assault Darwin. This is the way the game works. Not much to be done about it. It is not perfect by any means but it works both ways and he should be aware of that after a year of Japanese advances.

I can say in his defense that he did invade PM by sea. The Stacking Limits hex map makes the owen stanelys a little more difficult as a huge army will be disupted and out of supply oce they cross [;)] My main point is that the IJ defended Burma with 3 divisions max thinking it would be impossible to cross from Imphal to Katha with any force. What is ironic is that the IJ did this in real life sending 6 divisions the other way over the same mountians. Then the IJ player quotes some friend of his that deems it impossible. We listen to the data that supports our point. My opponent is quite a gentlmen .. we just agree to disagree on the point of waking up the Indian Army. The real problem, my opponent fully invested in the plan to overstock the Solomon's preparing to defeat me there. I did not follow the constraints in his plan and actually performed a complete couter .. this has put the IJ in a very precarioius position. I think I can now achieve a victory by January '45 now. As a side note, something went very wrong in how the IJ set up supply in Burma. I kept thinking at any moment I would be stalemated in a WWI type attirtion in one of the key jungle hexes. It is as simple as keep exchaging units within the hex and keep wearing me down at 4x defensive AV adjustement. But the combat reports .. even one hex away from a major base kept reporting "(-) supply" If I can offer some conjecture here I am thinking some fatories were left on repair on started sucking up supply or some other base was stockpiling somehow ... ?? When I captured Prome it has 35K of supplies and Rangoon 50K .. Most puzzling set of events ..
