I am thinking the lower maneuverablity rating makes them torp magents .. 8 DD's and I did not get the draw .. but did kill the sub afterwards ...

The Damage is 11 sys 35 flooding (31 major) The sys and minor flooding are being addressed by a repair ship 15 days .. then the long haul back to the West Coast ..

One other thought .. I think this is what makes the Solomons and the Gilberts so deadly ..so many places to hide submarines as opposed to the open waters. The reason why the Saratoga took a slug is why I decided to have my initial fight here . I got 6 looks at CV's and the Kaga took a slug ...

The 48th Division loses 1500 this fine day .. about 4% of the whole stack here at Prome.

If You all remember when this Burma campaign started we split Burma in half. The 33rd division and friends ended up North of the Katha/Bhamo line. Now these units are trapped just North of Lashio. Three turns ago we shocked exchaging 3:1 not in our favor [:(]. We deliberate attack this time and wear them down at 3:2. A little more acceptable ..

The British Armor is in route .. I will bring them in to counter the tanks in this hex. I know Nemo commented early that draining vehicles from the pool might not be a winning strategy but I suspect the IJ economy is in crisis. The more decisions the IJ have to make the more likely that one will be incorrect. Thus how many factories need to produce supply vs. loading the TO&E pools? How many for research vs. producing aircraft now? What factories should be changed etc ..The numbers of aircraft and rates of replacements are indicating a problem ... [;)]

The Scamp finds some BB's ..but looses the draw on a DD .. no harm no foul ..

The 31st INf Regement is prepped and currently residing at SF. I am ready to bring them into theater ...But first we have to clean up the Marshall Islands.

The map below shows the units fully prepped for the missions. Rght now we are pulling boys off of Narau Island, and Mili which were just invaded. This is the hard part here because none of the ports have been built up. So it is invade, get BF with Naval support .. offload engineers .. pick up bodies with fast transport, port built to level 3 . get the arnaments off the Atoll reorginize forces .. Wash Rinse Repeat ..

This would be easy but IJN SAG's, CV's and Submarines have been showing up at the least appropriate moments .. two turns ago hurting the Saratoga for 3 months.

Sooo about the time Wake Island is secure Ponape will be hit with the fresh new Essex Class CV's .. also we will have implemented Hellcats .. Then we can look at accerlerated attacks in the Solomons as well as using Pacific Ocean forces to strike New Ireland at the same time putting pressure on the IJA/IJN.

Crackaces -> RE: The Allies Take the Offense (5/11/2012 11:17:30 PM)

BURMA:

The picture below illistrates the problem in Burma. We have five months before life gets wet and supply gets low. I suspect that in one week we will have reduced the 12K IJA trapped near Lashio and we will be able to focus solely on the problem around Prome.

If we cross the Irrawaddy River we are at the mercy of a die roll and how many squads are disrupted/disabled by the river crossing along with the subsequent shock attack. The constant 2E/4E bombing of Prome has taken many lives, but the IJA keep moving forces in and keeping the AV high. Given that Toungoo has 52K troops in jungle ... that leaves us one jungle hex to pentrate the line. Two more divisions will be in threater. The 9th Aussies will make the trek cross from Imphal to Katha starting this turn. At 2 miles per day in the Rough Jungle it takes about a month to make the journey fatigued and with disabled sqauds that must be rested. The USA 43rd is sailing as we speak and that adds an additional month.

My hope is that developments in the Solomons and Marshall's will strain the IJ decision matrix and we can out attrite him here capturing Prome in May 43.. otherwise the Monsoons will be interesting ..

At first look the IJA took twice as many casulties so I won that battle right ? Wrong [X(] ... The IJA took twice as many disabled but look closely , The Allies took 12 times more destroyed inf sqauds .. 49 times the destroyed support squads . ..7 times engineers ..countless vehicles lost ... Disbaled sqauds come back in a couple of weeks with enough supply .. destroyed sqauds not so fast .. the Allies will take at least 3 months to replace those sqauds and this is the first battle for this road junction .. .

But the IJA are convinced they lost the battle because of the 2:1 casulity ratio ... it is a very interesting game ...

I am way over stacked in this hex ... this is very very disadvantagioius in Burma as using double supply in a place having no supply is very very bad ...I will give one more battle and then begin pulling out hurt units for eventual replishment ..

More later ..

Crackaces -> RE: The Allies Take the Offense (5/15/2012 6:50:55 PM)

I think it is worth a picture for what Burma looks like Feb '43. A look at the map below demonstrates the victory of the combat report above. The IJA have just retreated from a critical road junction seperating Prome from the rest of the IJ world, and permitting entry into Prome without recrossing the Irrawaddy River.

Up to the North there are 9000 troops left in a caldron with no escape. It is a matter of time and attrition before the 33rd division and friends are destroyed.

I was very skeptical but I think I can take Rangoon now before the rains begin .. reinforcements are a month away ..and then much more coming for a '44 party into Malay ...[:D] in the meantime I fly supplies not into China but to Magwe where we try to keep our bases at double supply and are not doing a very good job of it ..

Crackaces -> RE: The Allies Take the Offense (5/16/2012 6:12:35 PM)

My opponent is quite frustrated. He was packing for strat move from Prome to Rangoon. My armor got there on the last day when he should have been moving out. Now these forces will take 3 days to unpack. But .. I have 3200 AV that is executing a deliberate attack this turn along with 300 bombers of various types. This is not going to be pretty. The remaining IJ forces in Burma are about to be slaughtered.

The 53,000 at Taungoo have retreated back to Rangoon leaving this base empty. My forces will take 5 days to get there.

I have the Indian Paratroopers attacking Ramree island. It will be quite awhile before this is a base of operations, but I suspect the combination of Prome and Ramree will be very discourging for the IJ ...

The results were very mediocre considering the number of attacking aircraft about 500 casulties ... The difference .. forts and light urban terrain .IMHO. if IJ stroll out into open terrain with the same groups and poor weather I kill thousands of troops. Which in my education is what should happen .. unmolested 4E's and 2E's dropping thousands of pounds of bombs on units in the open without any air cover does not require a home rule .. neither does forts and terrain ..

The land battle draws to a hasty but very bloody conclusion ..

I bolded the destroyed things .. about 1800 squads /guns/vehicles ... for 300 VP's ....

Now for the bad news .. the units in bold/italics above start withdrawing .. I have paid PP's to get this far but soon the piper will have to be paid ... I have shut off replacements so Monty does not draw on my pools ..[;)] Now focusing replacements on just a few units .. the US units in this stack are spent and also withdraw at the end of the year ..decssions decisions ..

To the North we finish off the 33rd division ..

Crackaces -> RE: The Allies Take the Offense (5/16/2012 11:05:20 PM)

Question for the IJFB's out there .. what kind of squad replacement rates are expected scenario #1?? Can I compare losses and replacement rates to the Allies? 600 squads for the Allies would take about 6 months for most nationalites give or take a month or two ...with the exception of the British / Commonwealth which would be not in this lifetime .. (33 months) ... So how fast would these losses be replaced??

Not comparable at all. Unlike the Allies the Japanese "make" their own replacements as needed. It all depends on their:

  • vehicle
  • armamentt
  • manpower
  • heavy industry

pools as to whether they can sustain those losses.

Again, unlike the Allies, the Japanese can expand their industrial capacity.

BTW, hope you don't mind a non IJFB from answering your query.[;)]

Alfred your perspective is always welcome here! [&o] [;)]

With NY59Giants PM feedback, that tells me a lot in the big picture. I have signs that IJ economy is going through some rough spots. The only aircraft I am seeing is small fighter sorties in Burma and escorted stratigic bombing in China. The IJN movements are now non-existant, and units battled in port hexes or near port hexes are low on supply. That all leads me to believe that not enough fuel got to the Home Islands while the KB/SAG's were running rampant during mid 42.

In total I have destroyed 1893 victory points of Army "things" * 6 == 11358 Squads/vehicles/guns. As far as units, besides the SNLF's Navy Guards BF's on Atolls, I have destroyed 3 full divisions in three seperate "Stalingrads" and 2 divisions have fragments with 0 AV including the Imperial Guards. That does not include the Divisions that were reduced in the early China Offensive. Very early in this AAR I had a discussion with Nemo that I beleived if enough things were destroyed that the IJ would have to start making decisions on producing "things" vs. supply. I think that point has been reached, or the IJ might just keep the same pace of production, but refill these units at a later date.

Based on NY59Giants feedback and this discussion I am going to commit a US division to Burma that is sitting in reserve at Cape Town, with 4 Art units. This is 2700 PP's. [I have had these units here for quite sometime in case Burma, India, or Oz needed a division quickly I just pay the points then and commit.] This units can be in theater the end of April [20 days to get to India, then rail to "Chitty bang bang" and march to Prome. That puts them some time in April in theater. Just in time for the Monsoon. [8D] I am also thinking of moving the I AUS Corps for a '44 run to Singers ...

OK thanks again for the feedback it has me thinking!

Crackaces -> RE: The Allies Take the Offense (5/17/2012 5:32:40 PM)

No action on the 11 & 12th Feb 43. I sank a SC in the Solomons and bombing in China ..

I have enclosed a picture of Burma as it sits on 12th Feb. Prome is taken. Both of our forces our shattered. The Allies from overstacking and combat are fatigued and disrupted. The IJA are disabled, disrupted, and fatigued from bombing and combat. That 61,000 troops is decpetive because maybe 600 AV exists in AFVs and Infantry sqauds. The rest are support forces.

The attention draws to Toungoo as a key link for rail transport to Magwe. We are moving forces to take this base. Once occupied we will being to rail troops and start a second pincer under a new Corps. Two more divisions are headed the tough 40 day adventure from Sinchar to Katha. They will gather at Toungoo for the final push toward Rangoon.

Meanwhile every aircraft is flying supplies to Magwe and Mandalay.

The bombers assigned to Spokane have been activated for duty in the Pacfic. They move first to SF and then fly to PH. THat will give us 4 more B-24 groups to start raining terror on IJ positions.

Meanwhile the IJ are moving a big BB SAG into position. I should expect another shore bombardment soon ..

Crackaces -> RE: The Allies Take the Offense (5/17/2012 10:38:37 PM)

March 1943 is a key month for the Allies. After withdrawals, we have 22 AP's to upgrade to APA's. This is a 21 day affair. That means we can start our real offense in the Pacific in April. [:D]

The Essex class start in May. Sooooo if we can secure the rest of the Marshall's in April . we can proceed with deeper penatrations into the battlespace in May. Unitl then we continue to shift forces from Jaluit and Mili to get our boys back to Tabiteueua and then Pearl Harbor.
