I'm spending far too much time with this game, but I'm loving it. [:D]

Did you have previously knowledge in this conflict? Or have you read any book?

Just a guess, but perhaps this game is not a success because the topic is rather unknown.

Also a guess, Seprus does not post more is because the game was not as successful as expected?

Smele considers that the best book on the war is the one Catlord recommened in its day, Mawdsley, that by the way is also sold for the ipad [:'(]

RCW is not my field of expertise, but I knew the basic stuff. This game has taught a lot.

American buyer will choose ACW over RCW every time...

This could be a succes in Russia, but piratism is a big problem there.

I've read Mawdsley. Excellent one indeed.

For SEPRUS, ask them.[:D]

Yes, I have had for long some knowledge about RCW, having been in the past an historian, but mainly about political aspect rather than military.

For the causes of business failure, let's say an game released in unachieved state on a obscure topic , without vigourous presence on the board can't expect much. AGEOD is yet believing on the illusion the wargaming market is the same than in 2005, when they released BOA. At this time, many less games were available, and general quality was lower, especially for GUI and graphics.

Today I've on my HD:

- War in the East
- CMBN
- WW1 gold
- Battle of the bulge
- Filed of Glory
- Mathe's game about Napoleonian warfare
- Scourge of war
- Hannibal
-Decisive campaigns
-TOAW 3

To just mention wargames. I could add Fallout NV, GTA IV (yes GTA IV [:D], Witcher 2, Civ IV. And I could talk about 4X in space...

All these games are just awesome. Each one is deserving a first rate place and 5 years ago, when anyone went on the same forum when one great game was published, I couldn't even have dreamt about such a profusion. It's just a miracle I'm stickied with RUS [:D]. Not a miracle anyway, because the AGE engine, when used at full potential, is on par with all these great games. You just can't expect much when you publish a game unable to deliver this potential.

That's not to say RUS should have been published bullet proof. If you remember well, even if the number of copies sold was low, RUS had in the first 2 months after release a very active forum , and this interest could maybe have enlarged the audience with a few months more of active work and presence.

A confidence: since I'm here, and not on AGEOD board, my blog frequentation is raising, the number of FY downloads too. I patch often, I reply as soon as possible, I explain the concepts of the game, some short sketches of AAR. I even do a movie about installation process. As I've said I need players input to polish the mod, and I know how difficult for a player is to try a mod about an obscure game on a obscure period, especially if he has tried then shelved the official version. Most mods aren't generally so much improving the game ( arrogant I know, but the feedback by most players of FY is more or less underling this point, and, believe me or not, I'm yet puzzled how good is the AI [X(]). But, if I didn't made this effort, FY would have remained played by...me. And it would have never been that good. I will not have thousand of players, and I don't need that. Just the small number necessary to perfect FY will suffice. I'm confident I will get it, thanks to all of you. [8D]

Nikel -> RE: Fatal Years for 1.03 (8/9/2011 12:34:51 AM)

Well, perhaps it was/is not such a failure after all. Seb said a pair of times they would develop another game, so the experience cannot have been completely negative...

I also have some of the games you name. Could not get into Histwars, cannot understand the interface and probably do not like 3D [:'(]

I also think that the crisis you had with the team contributed a bit. And some are still expecting your DNO AI [;)]

Time to sleep. I am on the run visiting northern Portugal with my girlfriend. Tonight in Guimarães, beautiful small city center [:)]

I just can hope they will learn a bit about. Only the future will say it.

Oh it contributed. As I was almost the only one to be really present on the forum, after my departure, the SEPRUS presence on the forum has been at the level displayed from the start by the others...At last, an almost dead forum is easier to moderate [:D]

Good trip. Southern Portugal is very nice too. I will come back one year. Evora....under the sun, white walls [:)]

Very accurate, complex, competent AI.

THe game is very stable but for enjoying the experience, it's first mandatory to read the full manual before to play, as you will don't understand some parts of the rules ingame. Then you have to prepare to spend 2 or 3 hours to master some parts of the GUI. Just one example: some units are part of an Army without possibility to attach to others Armies. When these units come back to play after destruction, you have to reattach them to the original Army. This point being not explained in the rules, I've lost hours to undersatnd why sometimes I could attach Armies to any armies, others not.

By chance, this sort of trouble is very rare now. All in all, a wonderful game.

Chilperic -> RE: Fatal Years for 1.03 (8/9/2011 9:58:57 AM)

New version of RUS available on my blog ( see my sig). This version integrates the precedent patches and adds the new options described above ( Semyonov, military reform, German help).

Chilperic -> RE: Fatal Years for 1.03 (8/9/2011 11:28:24 AM)

Very interesting indeed. Many thanks [&o] and good holidays

Chilperic -> RE: Fatal Years for 1.03 (8/9/2011 12:58:48 PM)

This new version should be really stable now, in the sense I've run out of ideas, many bugs have been fixed in the last weeks, and the overall AIs behaviour is fine or can't be improved. Now, except of course unexpected bugs, I'm wainting more players input about game balance, victory conditions and reprot about defaults before releasing a new version of FY.

Don't forget the best way to help FY lays in remarks, critics, reports,AAR, save turn uploading for study...Or explanation about rules, strategical insights I will compile to offer with the next FY version. [:)]

Chilperic -> RE: Fatal Years for 1.03 (8/9/2011 3:44:37 PM)

uploaded a new FY version because of a bug. Sorry for the unconvenience...

Indeed the victory screen is bugged. Either there's something in the data files I may change, either it's aexe bug. I will check. Thanks.

So a stalemate? [:)]

You have missed Victory by a very narrow margin!.

Did you controlled Ekaterinodar at the end of your game?

I will too do something for Balt objectives and generally other foreign objective regions. they should reward points only when involved in RCW.

JJKettunen -> RE: Fatal Years for 1.03 (8/9/2011 5:09:43 PM)

Here the last turn for checking purposes. You can see some missing text strings of event. Generally partisan events didn't have proper texts.

Oh, I controlled Kiev too. Victory screen cannot be trusted, it seems.

JJKettunen -> RE: Fatal Years for 1.03 (8/9/2011 5:16:35 PM)

...and Novorossisk. These were in my control for several years.

Chilperic -> RE: Fatal Years for 1.03 (8/9/2011 5:16:46 PM)

Thanks for all your reports. It has done much for FY. And you have proved FY is playable until the very last turn [:)]

No problem. I have enjoyed it too much. [:D]

JJKettunen -> RE: Fatal Years for 1.03 (8/9/2011 5:36:45 PM)

Below is the turning point of the war. If the Red AI had chosen any other option than attacking my strongest stack across a major river, I could have been in trouble. Then it compounded the situation by not pulling back when supply lines were cut (it had ample stocks though), which allowed me to throw most of the SW army against it, leading to its crushing defeat. Donbas was saved, and the Reds were severely weakened in direction of Kharkov.

....

Fortunately for me, the "superstack" tried to attack across Dniepr, didn't succeed, and got almost surrounded.

It remains indeed one of its main flaw, and I 've not found countermeasures working for 100% of these situations. I can just hope the official version will deliver one day better AI algorythms for that, or to discover the trick. But frankly, I fear we are here confronted to a legacy of the BOA AI, a game without supply lines.

It's a shame that the exes are not developed separately.

JJKettunen -> RE: Fatal Years for 1.03 (8/9/2011 6:03:16 PM)

Btw, the AI can still do cool stuff, which make sense from supply point of view too. For example, at one point there was a continuous front of relatively strong stacks protecting the railroad to Tsaritsyn. Therefore I couldn't cut it. [&o]

Chilperic -> RE: Fatal Years for 1.03 (8/9/2011 6:18:20 PM)

I've discovered yet 2 bugs, certianly from the official version.

The first concerns Kronstadt

The second is explaining why some objectives are considered uncontrolled: it seems militia units aren't taken into account for garrisoning purpose. So a militia unit in an objective will be insufficient to get the VP: the case in your save for Ekaterinodar, Kiev, for example. It's possible a militia unit becoming regular doesn't work too. Last, maybe 2 regular subunits are needed ( ie an unit containing 2 elements°

I haven't done any change to unit values relative to that, so I guess it's an official bug or hidden feature. I'm going to check the last official patch to be sure.

Moreover, an AI has the right to do silly or sypid things from time to time. even some real Generals did the same, [:D]
