BTW the simple answer to questions similar to this - if asked in a serious vien - is "War is Hell" - or re-stated - "Bad things happen in War". Read some books about wars - they are nasty event groups! People die in war.
It is also true that there have been many moral, ethical and legal codes on this planet. A tribal chieftan in Papua might consider some actions more than fine, whereas the Pope might find these same actions reprehensible. Likewise, the Thuggee seem to have believed (maybe they still do) that their acts of murder were (are) part of religious practice. The British did not say their relilgion was wrong, but they did say the practice would have legal consequences. So insisting on judging historical actions from only one viewpoint can be constraining and prevent the learner from a full understanding. We all have "lenses" but the historian should strive to at least be aware of his/her lenses so as to mitigate the negative effects.
Regardless, my study of war clearly indicates "War is Hell" ...
