14th Tank This unit helped push British troops around for a few weeks on Malaya, and then high-tailed it to Burma, where it helped break into Pegu. It's now sitting in Rangoon fully prepped and waiting for the 33rd Div et al to arrive in about a week. The para-dropped and flown in troops at Bassein just outside of Rangoon will attempt to lock the road down back to Akyab. My opponent seems wise to this, and sent a few units out of Rangoon already. I-25 After the debacle of losing I-25 in PH on a mine-sweeping mission in my last game, I decided to keep her out of trouble but hopefully still useful this time around. She is out south of Midway looking for any TFs either by-passing the cordon around PH or heading out into the Central Pacific attempting to be sneaky. No luck catching anything yet. Nagato Maru This Ansyu-C converted to a PB early on and has escorted a mission into the DEI, not yet involved in any action, however. Shiranui This DD has been with the KB since the attack on PH and remains as an escort to these CVs. Currently they are stationed in Rabaul following the Sydney and Melbourne raid operation. Some subs are active in the area, and this DD will most likely be formed into an ASW group soon to search out these pesky intruders before they hit any meaningful shipping. I've often thought of doing the same thing, following a select few of my forces and documenting their actions during the course of the war. I think it's a neat idea and I may just do so now after seeing you post your updates. It seems you're having fun with it.

16 Feb 1942 subs: I-4 gets a whiff of a TK TF near PH, but can't get off a shot before being sighted. Other subs in the area are vectoring in next turn. China: Sian getting the usual treatment from the air today, even with thunderstorms in the area. Supply has to be getting low there now. Also hit Henyang taking out another SB-III. Can't be too many of these left. Airbase hits 43 Airbase supply hits 20 Runway hits 68 Troops continue to maneuver to get into the woods south of Sian and kick out the stragglers. DEI: The 5th Div takes Tandjoengbalai and will march on Medan. After this it will move to join in on Java. On Java the 38th Div still marches to the E to finish off the refugees from Soerabaja. Sinkep invaded, but a seemingly healthy Dutch unit is still there. Our SNLF couldn't take the base in a DA, getting a poor 1 to 3 result, but not losing much. Only 3 squads disabled. We'll sit for a bit and wait for reinforcements. Burma: The usual bombing Rangoon and waiting for more troops. SO PAC: Bombing Port Moresby and waiting for two SNLFs brought by a strong fast transport with 2 BB which will also begin with a bombardment.

17 Feb 1942 subs: A choke on the coffee moment today. S-18 shows up at Rabaul and ducks in to launch at the KB, which was out getting ready to move south if the TF noticed yesterday south of NG turned out to be anything serious (see below). Kaga took one fish in the belly. Luckily, after sweating through the rest of the replay, she only has damage of 9 sys, 8 (5) float. So the repair ship we just sent here will get a chance to prove it's worth right away! Looks like about 2-3 weeks of repair right now, but it's at pier side first, and then will move to repair ship. All air units will disembark and support local ops. So after that nervous moment, near Port Moresby, RO-60 hits an AP with 4 (!!!) torps in two attacks. Only a few troops (2 squads) are listed as lost. Several ships appeared South of NG, and not sure what they are trying to do up here. Nells will be set for 14 hex Nav attack with zeros escorting. The KB will hide away again! I-6 also misses CA Minneapolis and a bunch of AKLs near Lahaina. One of the subs sent to track down the TKs near PH actually took a shot! It hit an APD, however, not a juicy TK. Still, I'm sure this ship did succumb to the hit. Luckily the Kaga has a good resistance against torpedos. Normaly one doesnt harm her much. I think this is because she is a conversion and has torpedo bulges.

My opponent wrote and mentioned that he was pretty happy about seeing it get hit, but in his replay he saw the Akagi, which has already eaten one torp and is in Yokohama patching up for another 42 days. In a related FOW note, the Boise, which has been listed sunk, but which I suspected survived it's one torpedo hit on about Dec 10, was confirmed by Jocke as having made it. It was removed recently from the sunk list. Strangely though it's now back on it! Listing a sinking near Perth in February! Very interesting.

18 Feb 1942 subs: The hunter becomes the hunted! A sub near Hawaii vectoring toward TFs spotted there takes a torp from SS Narwhal and goes down quickly. Crap. First sub lost. 024 was sighted and attacked before getting off a shot near Kangean, by a few PBs. Burma: More of the fleeing AKLs near Rangoon were hit by Nells today, sinking two and PG Hindustan. A couple of them still got away. I'm pretty positive this was a supply run, as no units left or entered Rangoon. This tells me our bombing combined with the occupation of the city hex is doing it's job of starving the army there. China: NEar Taiyun our reserve division, the 110th, fully prepped for Yenan, has been moving across the river and shocked against the one Chinese unit in the rough hex across it today. This was a risk, but recon showed this wasn't a massive Chinese Corps, and this division is solid. The results were positive. Now the chase will commence, and the goal will be to capture Yenan, which has recently been evacuated. This will ensure our rear will not be subject to raids by Chinese units, and the resources here if captured intact can't hurt. It'll also be a decent airfield for attacking the northern areas if supply does flow there. The minus for leaders is odd as there is a very good leader in charge of this division. Bombig the field and troops there. SNLFs on Java getting close to Cheribo and Kalidjati, almost able to help the Raiding Rgt trapped at Bandoeng. Not sure why the Dutch haven't pushed it out and wrecked it. SO PAC: No more ships in sight. Every one bugged out fast. I am pretty sure this was a supply op as well, as no units were added or removed, but not sure why an AP was included.

The great thing for me is that it really shows how much each unit contributes, and the incredible distances they travel during the game. I'm amazed especially by the Tainan Ku S-1 and what it has done over wide ranges of the map. Also the xAK and the PB have already made very long trips and returned to the HI, and are now moving out again. I'd like to do a map chart as well if I can document this periodically. One more thing to remember to make images of! Of course this idea came from Cuttlefish, Canoerebel, (who has documented some units periodically), and others. It's kind of like fantasy sports. You see more of how each unit is contributing. Was keen to follow an AMC, but of course lost that early on in the South Pacific. Might choose a few others soon.

19 Feb 1942 subs: SS Sturgeon goes for 2 slow SCs plying waters between Luzon and Formosa. Misses with 2 torps. I am finding these slow SCs, at 10 knots max, but with 8 ASW, just don't do much. Not sure if the speed is what is hampering them, but it seems that may be the case. The 15 knot and 18-19 knot SCs that have 4 ASW do a great job and with good leaders are often attacking before the subs get a shot off. Not so these guys. Too bad, I think we get a lot of them. Anyone have good ideas of how to make use of them more effectively? SS Pickerel attacks an ASW TF near Balikpapan. Reduced subs in this area right now as I'm sure they rebase after the fall of Soerabaja. SO PAC: CAs Kako and Aoba lead a bombardment TF to Port Moresby. Mostly hits port, but gets a bunch of support troops. Lord Howe Island invaded. Once taken we'll move out quick. The idea is to periodically, as needed, fly some support in and recon or search inside enemy controlled areas. No permanent units will be stationed here. Burma: Nells at long range couldn't hit the remaining AKLs leaving the Rangoon area at first, somehow reverting to bomb use. In the PM attack they used torps and took out 4 more. All other captured bases in the area that are worth taking have an ENG unit and are building forts. A move with CVs here by the Allies would be risky, as with the KB a 8-10 days away in Rabaul, there isn't a long window for capturing and solidifying bases here.

Our Oscars did pretty well, considering what I've heard about their performance against 4Es. I know these are only the D, which has poor armament, but still not bad. 21 Feb 1942 subs: I discovered a few turns ago, (while looking for more AKLs to convert to ACMs after realizing I'm about 10 short and losing too many mines), a clutch of convertible AKLs at Samah. Just started bringing them to Hong Kong and the escort PBs sighted SS Seawolf. They chased and made a number of passes, getting 2 damaging hits, but nothing critical. Later in the turn the same PBs made another attack! I'll have to have a look at those captains! Burma: The B-17Ds came back to Pegu again, but again got no hits and Oscars damaged 8 with no losses. China: near Nanyang our armor again attacked the several corps trying to move into the woods. Same kind of result. A 1 to 2 with almost no damage to the IJA forces, but 12 destroyed and 65 disabled from the Chinese. Sian again pounded, as was Changsha. 22 Feb 1942 subs: Caught up with the tankers, which detoured near Lahaina. Or this is another batch. Not sure. Ship names seem different, but that could all be FOW. Anyway, escorts caught wind of us before a launch. ASW attack near Lahaina at 194,102 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Japanese Ships SS I-21 Allied Ships DD Mugford TK War Sirdar TK Salland TK Mobilgas DD Hull DD Clark SS I-21 is sighted by escort I-21 diving deep .... ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ DEI: It seems the longer I bomb a single location with the same bomber group, the better the results. At Batavia today hit the runway 35 times with 19 base hits and 5 supply, with only 19 Bettys! Nice. Took out 1 Do-24K-1 for good measure. More planes hit on the ground at Bandoeng as well. An SNLF reaches Kalidjati, bombarding this turn to discover only a base force there. A DA tomorrow should take the base. China: Sian plastered again. Ground bombing will begin soon. But there are so many ENG there now, the base will be at 35-40 damage every turn in spite of 60-70 runway and 30 airbase service hits. In the clear NE of Sian, 3 tank units hover to harass refugees from the commies fleeing the Yenan area. I've definitely noticed a higher hit rate for the IJN bombers with good pilots if they stay over the same base for a few days. Not as much right away for the IJA, but it's improving. Another example of where I don't understand the numbers behind it, but I'm seeing and learning from the experiences each turn. Bataan has shown the biggest improvement lately. Moving the 50 Sallys going in each day from 18,000 to 14,000 ft has worked wonders, and they've been improving at that level after the initial increase in hits. Not taking any more flak hits either, which seems strange, as earlier I was losing an average of 3-4 a week plus ops losses here.

The point of this is to provide a point to build some strength and possibly block retreat of the troops in Rangoon. Some movement was going this direction from there before this turn. I hadn't thought we were doing so well until adding all of these up! 1 Mar 1942 Another month beginning in game. Time to assess our progress. While things are going well, and early conquests have pushed the schedule forward, the end of the invasion bonus is looming. Plans in China are progressing well, but we must make decisions about other possibilities. 1. Should we take advantage of the invasion bonus to try for Ceylon or Perth? I'm leaning against both of these unless something very positive frees some extra troops. 2. Should we commit extra Divisions to N OZ or wait for Batavia to fall and use the troops there even if the bonus is over? Again, I think China is first and N OZ can be taken fairly easily by the 2 Divisions committed to Java +5-7 SNLF units. 3. Are there any other possible invasions to consider while the bonus is in effect? It seems a bit late now to thikn about anything else, including Fiji, Kodiak, Line Islands, or Midway. If we want any of these later to kill troops there and set the Allies back, we can prep and prepare better by waiting. Most quick lightly defended options have been taken, and at this point it seems to make more sense to continue to push toward goals in China while keeping other options open based on opportunities. subs: DDs near Rabaul catch up with SS Sargo and drop 3 damaging hits on it. They find it once more but can't finish her off. China: More bombing. More jockeying to get armor in position. More rest. 2 Base forces arrive in Kwangchowan. One will soon move to attempt to take Pakhoi, which seems unoccupied based on recon. PI: We have about 50 more AV at Bataan than the Allies, but the forts here are high and there is still supply, based on flak. It will be a waiting game. We're moving the 250 AV Brigade (which has been resting at Clark) and 2 15 AV ENG units to take the rest of the PI. They are heading for Legaspi to be picked up by transports. Burma: Supply is building now at Bassein, and the two Rgts are nearly completely transported. If possible we'll push to Prome. The 33rd Div is at Moulmein. A few more days to Rangoon. DEI: The mini-KB will unite for the first time at Singapore and wait for more DDs to finish conversions before heading to the Indian Ocean to patrol. We'll send a small SCTF out first to make sure we're not walking into something. I want to assess what is at Diego and if there are any movements out here before deciding whether Diego could be picked easily and if this is worth the risk and effort.

2 Mar 1942 Fuel and Oil: Tankers are moving extensively now during the lull before subs return from new bases in OZ and India. Hong Kong and Shanghai are getting a needed top-up. Some oil and fuel made it all the way back to the HI. Only one sub working the approaches to the HI now, near Nagasaki. Palembang has a ton of fuel. Balikpapan quite a bit. Miri is slowly recovering, and Tarakan is being used for small tankers to fill bases in the DEI. I can't imagine not having access to Palembang as Japan. It would stop nearly all offensive operations even now without being extremely careful about allocation and usage. Truk, which starts flush with fuel, is nearly out, and Rabaul needs more to fill the KB. Kawaijalein is low and only Babeldaob is really where I want it to be as a hub port, at 45,000 fuel. Actually Singapore also has a lot which was captured there intact. subs: I-20 sights CL Mauritius and a DD near Sydney, but of course misses with 6 torps. Not much luck hitting combat ships. We're about 1 for 10 right now. China: Near Loyang in the woods the armor has almost arrived. These Chinese units are showing movement to the SE, trying to get onto the supply line to Sian again. We're trying to kick them out before they are able to do this as that would mean committing the now nearly healed troops just ready to move into Sian again or moving all the way around on the roads to get to the spot, not only taking precious time but leaving our troops cut off for up to a week. DEI: At Bandoeng the navy guys finally take the base, nearly wiping out the Dutch armored car unit with 58 vehicles destroyed. Now these will move to within one hex of Batavia and wait for the 38th Division to rail in and the 5th to land and also rail over. 3 Mar 1942 China: Another good day at Sian bombing destroying several inf squads and disabling over 60, plus a bunch of support. Even though forts are at least 3 here the bombing is more and more effective. DEI: At Banjoewangi the 38th Div finally finishes off the remnants of forces from Soerabaja. It will immediately head for Batavia. Small AF Coy that have been here since the early conquests will be picking up and moving to outlying spots in the SO PAC area or small bases in N OZ once that is invaded. These are nearly expendable since they can be bought back, and can be flown in quickly and easily to provide places for search and recon to be stationed temporarily. SO PAC: Interestingly a recon goes over Cooktown and finds nothing there. This might be worth a snap invasion just to see if there is a reaction, and to possibly lead to wondering about defenses for OZ. Horn Island will be next, and I sent a fast transport down to get ready for something at Cooktown as well. Recon will go to Townsville next to check for air units and troops. Burma: UNits have moved out of Rangoon onto the road to Prome. Others have moved out from Prome toward Bassein. Our supply is getting better here and we should be able to move within several days toward Prome. There is one more para unit I could use here and I'll drop it on Prome if one of the remaining two units moves out. They look to be small Burmese forces, under 1,000 troops there.

4 Mar 1942 subs: Near San Diego I-9 aims at a decent convoy with a few AKs and an AP but gets tangled up with DD Crane. It takes 2 damaging hits and has 12 sys 11(7) float 4 engine damage. Back home for this one. That leaves me with no subs on the west coast. I may have to re-organize sub tactics if no contacts appear soon near PH. Maybe just leave 3-4 there, 3-4 on the west coast. Burma: Trying to hit the 1st Burma Division hard as it looks like it's sneaking out of Rangoon. The 33rd Div is still a few days away. Almost enough supply in Bassein to start things moving to Prome from there. China: The tanks have arrived in our stack in the woods near Loyang and we'll DA tomorrow. These are weak Corps for the most part, and the goal is not to destroy them but to firstly keep them off the road they are moving toward and secondly to wreck them just a little further so they might just vaporize on their own struggling to make it back to CHinese lines. The 110th Div captures Yenan today, giving the knockout blow to the Corps it's been chasing. Almost 200 squads destroyed, including 157 infantry. Now we'll get some garrison in here and get this Division back to its reserve role in a base on a rail line. SO PAC: There are 4,000 troops and 2 units at Cairns. So some stuff is making it up to the north. It looks lightly garrisoned if I wanted to commit to it though. But we'll just think about picking off easy targets first and probably then feint a bit before settling into a defensive posture here.

5 Mar 1942 subs: Bad luck with subs continues. Actually this could be my fault for leaving this one sitting a few hexes outside Brisbane for a while. I-1 hits AM Launceton with a torp but then takes a brutal DCing from PG Moresby and PG Swan. She is forced to surface where the deck gun manages to land a few hits on Swan before the sub succumbs. I-3 is also attacked near Port Kembla. One non-penetrating hit taken, only 3 system damage. RO-66 misses a good sized convoy heavily escorted moving into Suva. Gridley is here. This reminds me Cuttlefish's passage hunting subs near Fiji. Where is his AAR anyway? I miss it. DEI: Dutch fighters were airborn over Batavia today!!! That's the first sighting in over a month! So he does have a few pilots left. Our Oscar sweep for some reason did not engage with them even though they were all at 20,000. Maybe they were as shocked as I am and worried these were captured B-339s out for a joyride. China: To spice things up we take a risk with the Tainan boys today. The took a sightseeing mission over Chunking. It turns out one part of the AVG is indeed here, and 20 of them came up to face 40 crack zero pilots. The battle was decisive, with 9 H81-A3 shot down to two zeros lost. Only one Tainan pilot KIA and 1 MIA. Not bad. 3 more AVG planes listed as ops losses as well. This means two things. Firstly his pilot quality is not quite there yet to put these into the fray often. Secondly we can continue our bombing missions and stagger some of our escorts and sweeps to give the guys a rest. Some Oscar escort groups are getting a bit tired of accompanying the bombers everywhere day after day. Think they need a day of in Shanghai. Finally we managed an attack on the Chinese in the woods. It's okay, with good losses, but only a 1 to 1, meaning they aren't pushed back. 6 Mar 1942 subs: I-122 finds a big juicy AS Lucia steaming along the West Indian coast near Goa. She launches only 2 torps, which miss, and is then mercilessly pounded by AM Romney. The sub is left with 24 system 78 (51) float and 12 engine damage. This shouldn't make it far, but I'll set a course for Port Blair just in case they can plug the holes with some old loincloths. Disappointing not only to miss this choice target but then also to possibly lose this sub. Not a good week under the water. China: We decided to go ahead and keep attacking in the woods to try to get a good result and push these troops back. The result is not what we'd hoped. Our tanks bear the brunt with 2 destroyed and 36 disabled. More Chinese are destroyed though, so it's not all bad. The Jake unit here is heading back to get more planes. The fast transport is nearly ready to go.
