Hi all,

ORIGINAL: Dixie

I get to see my new workplace next week, I'm all excited again [:D]

How long will you work there Martin? Permanently?

Leo "Apollo11"

Too right! It's a full length tour so at least three years, but as I've got just short of four left in the RAF this could be my last tour. If I leave there early then it'll be on promotion.

USSAmerica -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (4/2/2012 12:42:12 PM)

Great Martin - so your future in RAF is ensured - I am very happy for that! [:)]

BTW, will it be big transition from jet engined planes to piston engined planes for you?

I'd imagine so. We didn't do any training on piston engines as it's such a specialist niche in the modern RAF. I've also had nothing to do with props in my career so far. The airframe side of things shouldn't be too much of a transition though.

Chickenboy -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (4/2/2012 3:43:16 PM)

Hey Dixie,

Mad props on your new promotion. [;)]

Terminus -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (4/2/2012 5:02:18 PM)

Done with Mrs. Tuchman's Stilwell book. Moved on to "The First Salute: A View of the American Revolution".

oldman45 -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (4/2/2012 5:17:05 PM)

Good Morning!

Its the beginning of the end of an era. The first P-8 patrol planes arrived at NAS Jax last week. The P-3 will begin being phased out. Going to miss seeing the old girl doing their daily touch and goes. Now the P-8 is an amazing plane with its capabilities but I have been around the P-3's in one form or another since 1976.

Terminus -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (4/2/2012 5:19:23 PM)

Wow, I thought that program had been cancelled.

Schanilec -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (4/2/2012 6:32:32 PM)

Lookin' like rain today. Snow on Easter?

I hadn't heard anything about it for some time myself. Here's Boeing's main page. Good stuff. What say you, ASW-ubermench Steve?

Schanilec -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (4/2/2012 9:14:18 PM)

Real nice thundershowers rolling through. Coming out of the southwest in a thin line (training somewhat) should last for awhile. It feels like spring today.[8D]

Nice upgrade to the P3. About the only disadvantage the P8 has, compared to it's predecessor, is loiter time - unless it's been fitted with auxiliary tanks (like the Boeing Business Jet 737 series).

Terminus -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (4/2/2012 11:02:30 PM)

I hope they soundproof the cabin. The civilian 737 is NOISY.

It has good features and bad features. A good speed so it's fast to get out on station.The cabin appears to be comfortable. Only 2 engines so it has little redundacy and not much ability to absorb battle damage. Plus it has the disadvantages of a jet at low altitude , and a SERIOUS disadvantage by having it's engines under the wing (as in close to the water). I would NOT want to fly this plane low to the water, EVER.

The 737 airframe has been proposed before, rejected in favor of the P-3g, the P-3g was cancelled and the P-7 propsed and cancelled. I'm also dubious of the fact that Boeing hasn't even tried to build a MPA since the 30's, and has never one a contract for one.

So I'm a little dubious. As I've been for just about every Navy airplane contract for the last 20 years or so.

And I'm even more dubious of replacing P-3's with drones, another plan. [8|]

So is every single P-3 version ever made, and I've got the hearing loss to prove it. [:D]

AW1Steve -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (4/2/2012 11:06:03 PM)

One thing that the P-3g and P-7 had , that the P-8 doesn't, is the ability to carry it's missiles in the bombay. And there's not much of an improvement in ordance ability (or more importantly , sono bouys). [8|]

Terminus -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (4/2/2012 11:07:58 PM)

A comfortable working environment for the crew would be crucial for those long patrols, I would think.

AW1Steve -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (4/2/2012 11:14:56 PM)

After 14 hours in the aircraft (not including many hours of preflight time and time spent "on hold") you turn into a zombie. My particular complaint was we always had 3 pilots, 2 flight engineers, 2 qualified navigators, 2 or more Acoustic sensor operator and ONE RADAR/MAD/ESM/Infrared operator. Guess which seat I sat in? [:D]

The P-3c and it's many improvements was actually far noiser than the P-3A or P-3B, largely due to its computer. You wouldn't think a computer would be that noisey , but our "3,000 pound Comodore 64 (it's BASIC memory) " was a screamer. It was really pretty though to see all it's blinking lights. a Vintage 1963 Univac. [:D]

Terminus -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (4/2/2012 11:17:17 PM)

"Fun".

AW1Steve -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (4/2/2012 11:19:23 PM)

Actually the fun thing to me is how well that computer worked (and could be repaired in flight---just replace the tubes). The truly amazing thing is that we sold the plane, with the computers, to the Japanese. [:D]

oldman45 -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (4/3/2012 1:11:29 AM)

I got to hear the P-8 today. I was surprised that it was rather quiet. Hard to describe the sound but it was not nearly as loud as I thought it would be.

USSAmerica -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (4/3/2012 2:40:53 AM)

Oldman, when I was on my CV, easily the most quiet plane in the airwing was the S-3 Viking. Two turbofans are much quieter than any of the other jets, and the E-2C's props were almost as loud as the Helo's rotors. The P-3 uses 4x the same, or very similar engines as the 2 on the E-2C's. I'd not be surprised that the P-8 was not too loud.

Fence is complete. Started Sat morning...just finshed...time to relax.

What is the loiter time compared to old P3?

Does it have weapon bay?

AE is finally reinstalling on my lap top.[&o]
It only took a month of customer no service [sm=fighting0056.gif][sm=fighting0056.gif]

Schanilec -> RE: THE THREAD!!! (4/3/2012 4:14:39 PM)

Living here, I miss the good ole B-52's and KC-135's. Then it was the B-1's and KC-135's. Then it was just the KC-135's. Now it's just the UAV's. And I think the new tankers are moving in, not sure. Sure do miss the Soviet Union days when we were target number one. I still have the launch control center. Thanks for the memories.[;)]
