witpqs -> RE: Question (no Michaelm please) (12/12/2011 4:47:18 PM)

I think he might have already made a reasonable guess about this thread, so I doubt asking him will be ruining any surprise.

Scotch is a great idea, many people love it. If you gave me a bottle of scotch, it would last the rest of my life because I don't drink it (drink very little alcohol at all). How would you know? Over the Internet, impossible unless you ask or I outright tell you. Could be the same for Michael. And if he likes it for a first gift, what to do with the overage leads to more guessing. What I'm saying is, asking him is an OK idea. He might really appreciate help with his laptop issue, or he might have that well in hand and prefer something else. Asking is OK.

wdolson -> RE: Question (no Michaelm please) (12/12/2011 11:08:03 PM)

Asking does sort of ruin the surprise a bit, but I think that's probably the safest route at this point.  I've come around to the ask camp.

BTW, the money has been transferred to Rob (jrcar).  There was a 1% cross border fee which I paid out of my own pocket.  The totals were $455 donated with $434.99 after fees.  That full amount was transferred to Rob.

I'm not sure what Rob received, I think he had around $200 a few days ago.  I don't know about computer prices in Australia, but my last Toshiba laptop cost my $650 US a couple of years ago.  It's not top of the line, but it's a decent machine.  If we didn't raise enough for a laptop, we got a long ways there, even if we do give him a bottle of scotch out of it.

I think you should not have done that (at least that's my opinion). You should have used the money we already sent (+ your part) [:)]

Cheers

Thanks for handling this Bill.

The fee was $4.35. I can afford it.

jrcar -> RE: Question (no Michaelm please) (12/13/2011 10:32:12 AM)

Ok have emailed Michael, he is a non drinker and does need help with a PC. Is there anyone unhappy that money donated for booze gets turned into a computer?

If anyone else would like to donate towards the PC I can keep this open another day or two.

Cheers

Rob

I doubt anyone would mind, but I've been wrong before. At least we'll be giving him something needed in a time of need, which benefits us all anyway [;)]

(I know that's not what anyone donated for...and it would have been nice to give a gift without giving something that benefits us but...is any gift truly free from this kind of thing?)

This post was supposed to be ironic - but I think I should stop here ...

There had to be something wrong with that guy...

...care to provide figures about amounts collected and estimated cost of a PC ? I sent my five bucks, but I can easily make it more if more is needed (and I suspect there are quite a few others in my case).

Thanks in advance
Francois

I'll have a drink in his honor on my end and be happy we could help with a new computer for Michael! [sm=party-smiley-012.gif]

What a great community to be a part of! [8D]

IMHO, absolutely use it for help with a PC. I'm sending a little more by paypal since this new purpose seems much more significant and in tune with the season at hand. [:)]

chesmart -> RE: Question (no Michaelm please) (12/13/2011 2:52:29 PM)

How much has been collected ?

jrcar has to come up with that, since he has all money now! [:D] From what I saw in thus thread, US$ 350 and AU$ 250 (estimation), so not too bad combined. [8D]

witpqs -> RE: Question (no Michaelm please) (12/13/2011 3:10:53 PM)

I'm cool with whatever Michael says he would like. [:)]

Grfin Zeppelin -> RE: Question (no Michaelm please) (12/13/2011 3:18:02 PM)

Via Paypal:

From the first post of this thread:

"So send donations to jcar's PayPal "jrcar @ iinet dot net dot au" as a "Gift" in Australian Dollars please."

Quite happy to gift Michael whatever is most appropriate ... computer (parts) are always on my XMas list. [;)]

wdolson -> RE: Question (no Michaelm please) (12/13/2011 10:05:53 PM)

If someone doesn't have a Paypal account, the link I posted accepts credit cards without needing an account.  That's still active if someone needs to go that route.  I'll send on any funds to Rob.

BTW, I sent around $435 USD yesterday.  I don't know what Rob collected, but the last he posted he had around $200 ASD.

rader -> RE: Question (no Michaelm please) (12/14/2011 5:15:18 AM)

Getting him a computer is a great idea... but isn't it a bit self serving? [:D]

wdolson -> RE: Question (no Michaelm please) (12/14/2011 5:31:49 AM)

Isn't it better to get him what he wants rather than what we may think he wants?  He doesn't drink, but he obviously uses a computer a lot and his regular use computer just died and he expressed to Rob that he would like to get a new one.

I assume he does other things with the computer than just work on AE.  He might have some work from his day job he brings home, or maybe it's possible he even plays this game a bit for his own recreation.

I was joking, I think it's perfect [8D] (Meant it to come across as "that's a great idea, I like it!"

and then... also, isn't that self-serving of us... (not a bad thing of course).

I'm sure he'll love it!

jrcar -> RE: Question (no Michaelm please) (12/15/2011 10:09:32 AM)

Quick update, we raised about AUD$800 in total (some people sent me in non Australian currency, so not exactly sure until I withdraw it). Aranging a suitable transfer mechanism to Michael.

Cheers
