Quick update, we raised about AUD$800 in total (some people sent me in non Australian currency, so not exactly sure until I withdraw it). Arranging a suitable transfer mechanism to Michael.

Cheers
Rob

Well that can buy a fairly good 13"/15" laptop ... well done chaps.

Yes yes yes, he might perfectly buy a laptop with the money. Mine cost around €500 (a standard one, I bought it 3 months ago; not the best one obviously). Who would have thought it... we were planning to amass little money for a good scotch and we ended up amassing big big big shining money. Not too bad. For all I care, Michael deserves it [8D]

Asking does sort of ruin the surprise a bit, but I think that's probably the safest route at this point.  I've come around to the ask camp.

BTW, the money has been transferred to Rob (jrcar). There was a 1% cross border fee which I paid out of my own pocket. The totals were $455 donated with $434.99 after fees. That full amount was transferred to Rob

I'm not sure what Rob received, I think he had around $200 a few days ago.  I don't know about computer prices in Australia, but my last Toshiba laptop cost my $650 US a couple of years ago.  It's not top of the line, but it's a decent machine.  If we didn't raise enough for a laptop, we got a long ways there, even if we do give him a bottle of scotch out of it.

Bill

Guys
Thank you.
This was definitely not expected, but very much appreciated.

I ended up getting a nice laptop while the pre-Xmas specials were on - $1000 WIN7 64-bit laptop for about $800. Almost a shame to load it up with the old software [:D]. But at least I have a new platform to test on ...

I am in the process of restoring the old code and compilers. Be a few days getting it all together. I might not get back all my old software, but at least I can get back to being able to run tests and code again.

Again,
THANK YOU ALL.

Any given day, mate!

You have gone above and beyond "call of duty" for community, so this small gesture was least we could do.

And now you know your dedication was not in vain. [8D] Not that many of us had not voiced our ingratitude...[:D]

So..where is the next beta? [:D]

The least we can do.

Now as I was saying to the rest of the community. I really am in need of a new flat screen TV.......Just mentioning it (again) just in case you really want to see this thread stay alive. [8D]

Can't think of anyone more deserving of a nice surprise this time of year. I'm glad this all came together right at a time when it was needed.

Same here! Channel 45! [:D]

I lived for Gilligan's Island reruns as a young kid. Who knew most of them were actually in color? [8D]

wdolson -> RE: Question (no Michaelm please) (12/20/2011 3:22:53 AM)

My father was late getting on the color TV band wagon.  When he did, he got a Sony.  That TV lasted until I was in college when the power switch shorted out on the TV turned itself on when I was standing in the room.  Really weird.

Michael: Considering all you've done for this band of WITP-AE-playing brothers (and sister), that really is small payback. Besides, think of it as being selfish on our part--we're jonesing for beta updates. [;)]

Merry Christmas!

Damn, I just fursiously read through this thread to see if it was too late to contribute...! Serves me right for being out of the loop for so long.

you all deserve a hearty pat on the back for thinking about Michael so selflessly. I am continually impressed by this community and actions like this are what keeps me coming back for what...10 years now? Wow...

Michael, I hope this communicates to you what a critical part of this community you are. Your work on AE is really what makes it so great and is the center of a great band of brothers from around the world. Have a VERY Merry Christmas my friend and a happy new year!

Cheers,
~Elf

Canoerebel -> RE: Question (no Michaelm please) (1/4/2012 5:25:51 PM)

Bump.

In the hustle and bustle of the season, I missed out on how the gift to Michael morphed, and then his response to the community. Very cool stuff. I'll belatedly throw in my best wishes to Michael and my thanks to the forum for being populated by good peeps.

Now, I suggest we work on a gift for GreyJoy. He deserves something for taking on an experienced player in Scenario Two, but he really NEEDS something to help him with his hair fixation. Do you guys think Nemo or NyGiants might be able to provide some counseling and/or psychoanalysis?
