Yeah, I just don't know. There seem to be lots of times when a bombardment does little damage, but few times when it does great damage. I could be wrong but I can't think of a time where I knew that there were high forts on the side that got blasted.

ART11 -> RE: Battle for Korea (2/26/2014 3:50:57 PM)

2 options
1: 2-3 days air&ground bombardment, and DA after.
2: Non-agressive option - bring everything You have at Naha to Gunzan and DA ( I know it can last 15 days or more). Till that happen - bombard all the time.

ART

Thanks guys! [:)] Iīll ponder it for an hour before making the call.

How about the low level of allied losses? No forts and he actually have more (and obviously bigger) guns then me. Supply limiting counter battery fire?

Is counter-battery as effective as actually launching a bombardment attack?

JocMeister -> RE: Battle for Korea (2/26/2014 4:37:47 PM)

Donīt know but I took some wicked losses when bombarding at Masan earlier before I let the troops dig in!

paullus99 -> RE: Battle for Korea (2/26/2014 5:33:25 PM)

Given those results & the possibility that his supply situation is poor - this may be a great time to attack with those tanks of yours and really put the hurting on that stack. If you hit them with some air first, all the better.

Game is reaching the end - why not hit him with the haymaker?

JocMeister -> RE: Battle for Korea (2/26/2014 5:39:30 PM)

I did pull the trigger for next turn...fingers crossed. 4Es have refused to fly for 3 days straight now. Hopefully the take off this turn. If worst things come to show I can always fall back to the level 6 forts at Moppo and make a stand there.

JocMeister -> RE: Battle for Korea (2/26/2014 6:36:31 PM)

It was bloody but we got this in control! [:)]

Short update before bed.

quote:

Ground combat at Gunzan (102,52)

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 126541 troops, 2058 guns, 4612 vehicles, Assault Value = 5681

Defending force 190656 troops, 2471 guns, 1171 vehicles, Assault Value = 6942

Allied adjusted assault: 3100

Japanese adjusted defense: 3494

Allied assault odds: 1 to 2 (fort level 0)

Combat modifiers
Defender: preparation(-), supply(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
18421 casualties reported
Squads: 385 destroyed, 1104 disabled
Non Combat: 74 destroyed, 367 disabled
Engineers: 36 destroyed, 244 disabled
Guns lost 582 (126 destroyed, 456 disabled)
Vehicles lost 245 (49 destroyed, 196 disabled)
Units destroyed 1

Allied ground losses:
9170 casualties reported
Squads: 220 destroyed, 729 disabled
Non Combat: 16 destroyed, 461 disabled
Engineers: 28 destroyed, 93 disabled
Guns lost 313 (35 destroyed, 278 disabled)
Vehicles lost 719 (28 destroyed, 691 disabled)

Losses are spread evenly with most IDs having 20-40 disabled squads. But the best new is the armor is almost completely intact. 2-3 Tanks disabled in each units. Disruption and FAT very low and only 10-20. 95% of the disabled vehicles are motorized support. This had the unfortunate consequence of bumping support into red though. Iīll start moving up some more from Moppo. Tanks will need to rest 2 days and then they will attack on their own. NO FORTS! Christmas! [:)]

paullus99 -> RE: Battle for Korea (2/26/2014 7:52:24 PM)

NO FORTS! Well, that explains the bombardment results - the next attack is going to hurt him...I don't think he has anything there (by that list) that can do your tanks any real damage.

Korea 14th-15th June -45
______________________________________________________________________________

Lots of action these two days. Obviously the main action was here. This bombardment on the 14th:

quote:

Ground combat at Gunzan (102,52)

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 120386 troops, 2054 guns, 3726 vehicles, Assault Value = 5708

Defending force 188464 troops, 2343 guns, 1008 vehicles, Assault Value = 7058

Japanese ground losses:
2287 casualties reported
Squads: 32 destroyed, 70 disabled
Non Combat: 2 destroyed, 4 disabled
Engineers: 10 destroyed, 32 disabled
Guns lost 20 (6 destroyed, 14 disabled)

Non Combat: 3 destroyed, 9 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 5 disabled
Guns lost 16 (4 destroyed, 12 disabled)

As mentioned earlier my troops are in pretty good shape. The IDs are heavy on DIS and FAT but the armor is almost untouched. 1-2 days of rest and I can get the armor attacking again. In the meantime the IDs will have to suck it up and provide bombardments.

This is obviously a very positive result for me. Iīm going to shift some artillery from the Masan stack to Gunzan and more reinforcements will come from Naha. Mostly Artillery and more armor but I also decided to bring in the US reserve stationed there. This is the breakthrough I been waiting for. Quite annoyingly the 4Es refused to fly for the 4th day in a row! [:@]

Erik also tried another bombardment of Moppo on the 15th. The newly built forts seems to have a really good effect.

quote:

Night Naval bombardment of Moppo at 100,54 - Coastal Guns Fire Back!

24 Coastal gun shots fired in defense.

Japanese Ships
CA Mikuma, Shell hits 1
CA Nachi
CA Maya
DD Isonami
DD Suzukaze
DD Yamakaze
DD Shigure

Allied ground losses:
30 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 6 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled

Airbase hits 3
Airbase supply hits 1
Runway hits 4
Port fuel hits 1

I donīt know why he is keeping up with these bombardment now. As I donīt have any planes stationed at Moppo they serve no purpose. 3 "E" where sunk by mines and PTs. Some 10 PTs lost.

Ouch, ouch and ouch. There is a real danger Erik will try and counter attack here tomorrow. Could be dicey if he does. Iīm down to 1100 AV. Level 2 forts though. The 2Es will visit the stack tomorrow in case he goes for it.

I underestimated how much fight this stack had left. They have suffered 400-600 casualties per day for 3 weeks now and have been completely cut off for the same amount of time. Iīm going to have to send reinforcement here if Iīm to remove this stack. Ouch.

After 3 days of humiliation over Kagoshima we finally get the upper hand on the 15th. This Sweep saw the combat debut of the Corsair 4. Its a really nice plane with a 446MPH top speed. Sadly the replacement rate is dropped from 158 to 115 which sucks. [:(] Hopefully the better plane can make up for fewer numbers.

Are you going to hit the Gunzan stack with some 4E admonishment? Out in the open with no forts....Maybe also hit the airfields to deny him a chance at making forts.....

CaptBeefheart -> RE: Battle for Korea (2/27/2014 6:08:00 AM)

You probably thought of this, but your boys at Gunzan could probably use more HQs and US Army base forces with their 200 support. If you can beat that uber-stack you'll be in clover. Also, if your 4Es don't hit him there, could it be he has the base LRCAP'd?

Cheers,
CC

Already moving up the SOPAC HQ from Moppo. [:)] Should arrive in a week or so. He could have LRCAP of course but I have loads of sweeps set and even 200 P38s on escort. Its annoying to say the least. [sm=Christo_pull_hair.gif]

Indeed! Very pleased with that. Last time his big guns went in they didnīt manage to close the AF and that was with only level 2 or 3 forts. Now they are up to 6 so results should be even worse for him if he tries again with them.

And even if he does manage the fleet will arrive in a couple of day and then it will be for nothing anyway! So for now Iīm happy to let him waste fuel and supply. [:)]

JocMeister -> RE: Battle for Korea (2/27/2014 9:39:51 AM)

The Fleet
______________________________________________________________________________

Speaking of the fleet...we are now starting to assemble for another run to Korea. This time we will leave behind a permanent Naval defense force at Moppo.

We will also land BFs at Saishu-To and artillery for Korea.

------------------------
The Allied Fleet
------------------------

CV Fleet - 2000 Planes
6 Fast BBs
12 Slow BBs
11 CAs
16 CLs
6x12 DDs

Some CLs and DDs will be left at Moppo to provide a deterrent for bombardments as I intend to permanently station planes at Moppo. Another batch of around 80 PTs will also be delivered. Subs are starting to come back from repairs and 21 are sent straight to Moppo. Another 14 are on their way from Manila. Further 30-35 will be ready within the week.

In addition to that many ships lightly damage in the "2nd day disaster" are nearing completion of their repairs. Within 5 days 1 CV, 1 CVL, 4CVEs 1BB, 4 CAs, 11 CLs and 10+ DDs will finish repairs at Manila. Within another 30 days 1 CV, 1 BB, 5 CAs, 2 CLs and another batch of DDs will be ready.

We also have some stuff coming in from Aden and the West coast. 1 CV, 4 CVLs, 7 CVEs, 2 BBs and 10+ DD/DEs should arrive within 60 days.

------------------------
The Japanese Fleet
------------------------

It looks like we have cleared out the numerous DE/MTBs/E TFs that roamed the waters outside Moppo. None have been seen for over 2 weeks.

We know the two Yamatos are still operational together with 3 or 4 of the slow BBs (one took 2 TTs a couple of weeks ago). We also have the 3 CAs that made an appearance at Moppo. Status of the KB is uncertain but believed to be 4-6 CVs consisting of 300-400 planes. I see at least two CVs repairing at Hiroshima under a 600 plane CAP. I wonīt bother trying to sink them at port. They will be easier to destroy when leaving port if he can repair them.

Obviously we have a crushing superiority on the sea and while the IJN still exist they currently pose no strategic threat to the Korea operation.

Gunzan - Your screenshot of the troops there shows most divisions eligible for OOB upgrade in 15 days. Do you know what this will be?? Hopefully you will have the base then and can do it there.

Yes, 27 Pershings and 27 Sherman CS tanks per ID! [sm=00000622.gif] Thats going to add another another 300 heavy tanks of whom 150 are Pershings! Thats a SERIOUS punch!

135 Armor, 220 Anti Tank and 35 Antisoft. To compare with the Shermans 90/120/32. Only the Joseph Stalin II and III are more heavily armored. Nothing Japanese will come even close to touching the Pershings.

Should add also that this is the last TOE upgrade that will take place in the game. Nearing the end now.

Erik indeed had a large LRCAP up over Gunzan. Luckily at least some of my sweeps arrived first and the bombers where sheltered by the P38 escort.

Erik also tried to bomb my troops but the 15th NZ AA BDE fended them off easily shooting down almost 20 bombers outright. I doubt they will be back. No damage to the troops. In return the allies inflicted less then 500 casualties on the Japanese defenders. Not good enough for the losses I took.

If Erik keeps up his LRCAP tomorrow I have a little surprise for him.

A Japanese DE TF entered Moppo during the night. Probably to take out some PTs. One PT sunk.

------------------------
China
------------------------

No attack from the Canton/HK stack. My bombers did give them a good workover though.

After the sun sets we have shot down 172 Japanese fighters for only 19 own losses! [&o] The total for the day is 185 vs 33. LCT G.Gibbons claims his 29th kill over Gunzan! [:)]

I doubt the LRCAP will be up tomorrow but to prove a point another 300 plane Sweep will hit tomorrow. And for effect we will also sweep in a couple of other places.

Unexpectedly the Japanese try to strike at our troops at Gunzan again. The raid has no effect as the AA BDE scatters the bombers.

The AA BDE claim 16 bombers during the day. These guys are absolutely GOLDEN. You only get 3 of them. 2 from NZ and one at Colombo. Buy them out as they are best AA units you get.

Not much to report here today. Bombers will shift target tomorrow to aid the Chinese superstack in capturing Hengyang. Not sure its needed but better safe then sorry. Defending the city are 20 units totaling 32.000 troops. Chinese forces are about half a million. [X(]

B29Bs/25s bomb the previously undetected Ki-83 factory. It was undefended with a lone NF showing up. Factory is completely destroyed.

The B29-1 attack the LI at Oita. Its heavily guarded by almost 50 NFs but the bombers manage to knock out the LI but suffer for it. 6 B29s are shot down.

EHansen -> RE: Battle for Korea (2/27/2014 7:13:07 PM)

I think you should get 4 AA brigades, 15th, 16th, and 17th at New Zealand. And the 23rd at Colombo.

I doubt that the Canton/HK stack will attack, they have little or no supply. If they attack they
will get slaughtered.

You are quite right. I never bought out one of the NZ AA BDEs as I didnīt have nowhere near enough AA guns to fill it out. I then of course forgot about it... wish I would have remembered that a year ago or so! [:D]

JocMeister -> RE: Battle for Korea (2/28/2014 7:19:06 AM)

Didnīt get a turn from Erik last night. He sent me an email telling me it should be up early this morning but none have shown up.

A little bit nervous about the turn as I let the armor attack at Gunzan.

China
------------------------

Better news here though. Hengyang is easily clear from enemy troops. Iīll divide up the Chinese superstack into 4-6 smaller stacks. Thats going to be a rotten amount of mouse clicks. Yuck. But it will allow me to cover 4-6 times as much ground. Besides Erik only have on Superstack left and the CMA can deal with that.

While my Chinese campaign was enhanced by some player errors on Eriks part I hope I have shown that this game is perfectly playable without resorting to giant mega super duper stacks. What won China for me was a small 1700 AV mobile force consisting of 2 motorized divisions backed up by some armor. They allowed me to quickly move around Eriks strongholds. Once I had moved around the "superstack areas" at Canton/HK and Liuchow China was won. With everything up on the frontline and nothing in deep reserve it was game over. I havnīt really checked but I think I advanced some 15-20 hexes in just 2 months.

I also did it completely without the Chinese forces. This is their first real contribution in the war. And its not a necessary one. The troops used to liberate Canton/HK could just as easily have done this part.

Most of the Sweeps never showed up. Some did and they didnīt do very well...I would estimate I lost some 20 fighters for 10 Japanese. But its pure speculation before I see the turn!

JocMeister -> RE: Battle for Korea (2/28/2014 12:40:58 PM)

The "CMA" in China
______________________________________________________________________________

I feel pretty confident now to declare the China campaign as finished. Its mostly about mopping up right now. The only larger Japanese force currently in China is the new 150k Stack around Chushien. I think its most likely that stack is heading towards Korea though. Probably to bolster the Gunzan stack if it still holds.

This was actually a very fun campaign. Far cry from the Superstacks in Burma. If its one thing I learned in this campaign its that speed wins. Sadly the scale of AE makes it very hard to use Armor and Motorized units in a proper flanking move. Korea is a good example of this. If it was just 2-3 hexes wider Eriks two Mega stacks would already be outflanked and isolated. In fact China may be the only place on the map where you can truly use fast motorized units to outflank the enemy. There is simply not enough room anywhere else.

Erik has cleverly used this against me in Burma, the Philippines and now Korea by creating these massive stacks of anything between 3-10k AV. He makes sure they are in good defensive positions (Gunzan being the exception) are dug in and have plenty of artillery. This forces me into an attrition battle with massive stacks like the trench warfare of WWI. And defeating those stacks take time. Its SLOW.

It has been a good lesson though. This tactic can easily be defeated by either room to maneuver or landings behind the superstack. China was refreshing proof of that and so was Tavoy. I now know how to deal with this tactic if I encounter it in my next game.

Here is a map of the CMAs movement in China. [:)]

JocMeister -> RE: Battle for Korea (2/28/2014 5:09:32 PM)

Went through the turn. Luckily it was mostly Motorized support that was toasted in the attack. Have to pull out one of the TD units though. Took a bad beating with every Jackson disabled.

Airlosses wasnīt that bad either. Got slightly lower then a 1:1.

Korea

The 4Es finally take off to good effect. About 1500 Japanese casualties inflicted on the day. The stack has grown to 360.000 troops though. Erik keeps on piling on. And I think more is to come...

The Masan stack suddenly dropped its AV to 3200. Knowing Erik he is going to pile that on the Gunzan stack. This leaves me with a good opportunity. I can shift from Gunzan to Masan a lot faster then he can. I have only 3 hexes of "gray roads". Erik has to move 6 hexes + 1 "yellow road". Plan is very simple. I shift as much as I dare to Masan once the Japanese troops from Masan arrives. Armor will need only 3 days to get there...

Moppo will reach level 9 tomorrow. Erik moved his SCTF a bit to the East. Probably not wanting to get too close to the Allied fleet. Iīll see if Moppo reaching level 9 tomorrow will trigger a reaction. Iīve set a trap for him and hopefully he takes the bait.

Iīve had a sneaking suspicion Erik have deployed his NFs to far West. The strike at Oito confirmed this so I used the opportunity. Only 8 NFs over the most important NF factory... [:)]

This poses a very interesting question. How good are his NF pools...If allied recon is correct he now only have 18 Ki-46 NFs still in production. A Zero NF factory of 30 points is also in production. He also have a Denko factory of 30 but I donīt think its producing yet as I havnīt seen any operational ones. It isnīt due until 11/45.

I really should start doing it like that. This time I actually had a copy of the text though. But when I was to crtl+v I accidently hit ctrl+c and overwrote the "copy" with a copy of nothing.

I was banging my head against the keyboard after that... [:D]
