Where Eagles Dare was well done. Also, The Great Escape was flawless as a major motion picture. The Pianist faithfully portrayed the brutality and struggle to survive in WWII Poland.

I'm coming late to the party, but one film not mentioned yet that I really enjoyed, and is probably in my top 10, is "The Train" with Burt Lancaster. "From here to Eternity" is also up there, another Burt Lancaster film. (Man crush?) I also give thumbs up for many of the films already mentioned. Waterloo and Zulu are two of my favourites as well. I just love the uniforms of the Napoleonic era. Another film, perhaps not a war movie in the traditional sense, is "Seven Days in May" with Kirk Douglas and, oh man, Burt Lancaster (this is getting scary!). [:D] So many more I'd like to comment on, but they've been covered already.

StK I watched "Das Boot" both in English and in German with English sub titles. I much preferred the sub title version. I understand the original actors also did the dubbed version, I still preferred the sub titles--I think the emotion was more intense. I have studied German, but I'm not fluent, so that might have helped me use the sub titles.

I have the Dos Boot uncut version that is rather long and I watch it in German with English subtitles. Just something about a German U-Boat crew speaking English doesn't seem right. Still enjoy Zulu along with Zulu Dawn. I enjoy the longest day as well with all it's cameos. Flight of the intruder reminds me somewhat of the time I spent in the PI. Was their for the evac moved from Clark to Subic and was evaced on the Midway. The trick with the quarters off Cebu was really memorable.

I'm fairly sure that "Midway" just nicked a load of action shots from "Tora! Tora! Tora!" Ruined it a bit for me

I actually had the book first, before watching the film, and it's probably still floating around somewhere... It may have been my first exposure to glossy inserts of WW2 photos in WW2 books. The photos were pretty sweet.

It was made in the mid 70s and stars Timothy Bottoms and Anthony Andrews as the two main Czech agents that are flown in to Prague to kill "The Butcher of Prague". Martin Shaw plays a third Czech agent who ultimately betrays his comrades in order to save his family. The film keeps largely to fact, although the final scene takes a few liberties with what actually occurred, but is worth it for the tear jerker of an ending. Not sure if they actually filmed in Prague, but it looks like it. At the end of the film they tell what happened to each of the individuals - including those that helped house the agents.[:(] The soundtrack is, on the face of it, a strange choice - but works brilliantly. The music is synthesiser based ( pre-Kraftwerk!). It shouldn't work in a WWII film - but trust me it really does! Sadly no copies of the soundtrack exist and the composer says it's uneconomic to re-create - which is a real shame...... If you get the chance, have a look.

For years I have said the three best war movies are Das Boot, the siege of firebase gloria, and Sam Peckinpah's 'Cross Of Iron' Mister Roberts (1955 film) should get an mention as the most realistic war film (judging by my time at sea) lots of really boring stuff, petty ship politics and drunken debauchery during shore leave.

Francois Well, Apocalypse Now's premise is a mission set in the Vietnam War ( albeit a covert mission ), into unknown territory, with lots of action and mishaps along the way. So I'd have to disagree with you on that point, it really is a war/antiwar film, depending on which side of the fence you are on. Joseph Conrad's 'Heart of Darkness' ( on which AN is based ), is a truly brilliant book, and I would recommend it to anyone. This is my favourite quote:- (I beg your indulgence guys[X(] ) 'Going up that river was like travelling back to the earliest beginnings of the world, when vegetation rioted on the earth and the big trees were kings. An empty stream, a great silence, an impenetrable forest. The air was warm, thick, heavy, sluggish. There was no joy in the brilliance of sunshine. The long stretches of the waterway ran on, deserted, into the gloom of overshadowed distances. On silvery sandbanks hippos and alligators sunned themselves side by side. The broadening waters flowed through a mob of wooded islands; you lost your way on that river as you would in a desert, and butted all day long against shoals, trying to find the channel, till you thought yourself bewitched and cut off forever from everything you had known once -somewhere- far away in another existence perhaps. There were moments when one's past came back to one, as it will sometimes when you have not a moment to spare to yourself; but it came in the shape of an unrestful and noisy dream, remembered with wonder amongst the overwhelming realities of this strange world of plants, and water, and silence. As films like Casablanca & Conspiracy got included here (2 superb movies) shouldn't also Judgement at Nuremberg get mentioned? The acting in this one is simply astonishing.
