I'm starting to worry whether your opponent fully knows what he's doing.... :s

It's early. His style is very methodical, and he has accelerated some in the past week. The Hawaii thing may turn out to have been a fling, and he now gets down to grinding out islands. From his e-mails there is little tactical discussion--more on the NFL--but he seems to have a core worldview, perhaps shaped by playing Nemo, that Japan's effort is fragile and the biggest landmine for them is the Big Mistake. HE thinks if he stays conservative and plays for reasonable defense lines he'll do OK in Scen. 2. That's my takeaway at least.

I of course don't have a PBEM breadcrumb trail, so he's feeling me out. So far I've done a lot of rope-a-dope. The China moves may also have confused him for two game weeks or so, but he's now concentrating on taking what's served up for free and getting those economic resources flowing toward the coast. What I'd do too. He isn't charging toward Burma across northern China. He has routes up into there from Indo-China and out of the HK/Canton zone, but so far he's just taking railroads and regularizing his front lines.

A game note: Due to work travel this weekend the next move I get won't be until Monday, 12/10, most likely.

The Strait Dope

OK, back on the horse after a short recess. Have the next turn in the box, so I'll be brief.

In the first six months of the war the Allies have few advantages. The Japanese have their area of operations relatively confined geographically while the Allies must look at the entire globe. The Japanese have their striking forces in a few centers of gravity and hold good internal lines. They have better aircraft across the board. They have unity of devices; they don't have tanks their own side can't trade aorund and use elsewhere for example. And so on.

The Allied player must seek to maximize what he has while playing for time. We all know this. I have been trying in this, my first PBEM game, to push against things I did versus the AI. Sometimes those things have worked, mostly they have not. But playing a brain and not scripts does have certain advanatges. You know the other player is going to adjust. You know he knows he has to serve the needs of the Japanese economic modeling. And you know he can look at the calendar.

What advantages does the Allied side have in the first six months? Opinions will vary, driven in part by play style. But IMO at the top of the list are 1) Aussie infantry quality already in theater 2) pre-war CV DB squadrons 3) the USMC 4) Dutch subs and USN S-boats. 5) geography.

Putitng this all together I know or suspect:

1) Hawaii, whatever it was or is to Mike, has not all gone according to forecast. It has not really affected anything I would or would not have done.

2) The conquest of the DEI and NG are behind where many Japanese players would like to be in mid-January.

3) Sumatra and Java have not been touched, and are in fact pretty well off defensively.

4) Really significant, in 1942 terms, air reinforcements are coming into CT today and for the next three days. Multiple B-17, 2E bomber, and Aircobra units. Transport is already there to lift them anywhere in Asia.

5) Petroleum takings are behind the curve, and some destruction of captured assets has been achieved.

6) China has been easy for Japan, but garrison requirements are adding up.

7) After the bug-out slaughter the Allies have not served up ships in great numbers and given away VPs. Force Z exists and so far as I know is not detected. All USN CVs are safe in San Diego, and have almost finished swapping out fighters for Wildcats.

8) Singers is as strong as I can make it. All HQs are topped off, all combat COs upgraded.

Between now and 1 March the aircraft above will be recieved in theater. There will likely be a battle for Palembang. Bataan will be invested or fall. The battle for Singers will happen. Probes, at least, will come at Mandalay. The conquest of Borneo will come to completion. If anything further is planned for Hawaii it will happen in the next six weeks or not at all IMO.

My central tasks are to meet each of these strategic challenges in the best way I can, with the assets I have.

1) To that end, I judge the Java Sea to be a sub-theater where the correlation of forces favor the Allies a bit. The geography is constrained and favors LBA. There are two major naval bases in Soerbaja and Batavia with self-generating supplies. Force Z is on call in the IO near Cocos I. And the approaches from OZ and CT are, so far, unmolested. The Makassar Strait in particular is seen by many Japanese players as "good" since it is near new air bases in the PI and a short run from the fleet base at Babel-de-bob. But it's also narrow and close to Soerbaja's sub base. Now, with all relevant Allied mines deployed, the Allies have called in regional subs and reloaded fish. Four Dutch and USN subs patrol the Makassar Strait in reenforcing patrol zones. Referencing above, the Allies know Balikpapan will be next after Tarakan in the oil wars.

Balikpapan takes a heavy bomber strike with a vector pointing at Kuching. Three Dutch fighters slow it down, but it does a fair bit of damage. This is followed by a Ground strike probably sent as intel-by-bombing. Then a MKB approaches and meets the subs. Surprisingly (from the e-mail with the turn) what strikes is a Mk-14, not a Dutch weapon.

The follow-up strike by carrier air says either this damage was minimal or there are more MKB carriers present.

2) RO-61 attacks a light TF unloading a second base force at Midway, and misses. Four hits, at least one penetrating. The first ASW upgrades are beginning to go back to sea.

3) The scratch Hurricane force at Singers continues to hold the line, hoping for support. Overall this attrition bombing is hurting the Allies a lot, and will shorten the siege, but it is also costing Japan.

Ki-43-Ib Oscar: 1 destroyed

4) Miri oil strikes do no damage but confirm Oscars are still present.

5) In Burma the tank regiment from Pegu has probed as far north as Toungoo. It is bombed by Chinese heavy bombers, but is also CAPed. Two planes are lost.

6) At the very start of the turn Lingayan falls. My understanding of the code is this happens when Rowboat Corps are involved; the loss does not show in the combat report, but does in combatevents.txt. The USA tank unit withdrawing from re-flipping Iba will turn and see if Lingayan can be done the same. Nothing but stalling, but every day helps.

7) Undefended Johore Bahru falls to 16th Infantry Reg. which shows a (-) for fatigue. This may buy a few more days. Singers is now wholly isolated. All up-country clean-up as far as Rangoon is also accomplished. The table is set.

The Hardest Working Task Force in Show Business!

Another slow turn and the next is in my in-box, so . . .

1) Today we see serendipity as well as another "odd" use for little babes of the sea. Sometimes you set out to do something bad, but good things happen.

Over the first six weeks of the war the PT forces have been, well, abused. Sent to sea from Hong Kong without fuel to reach the PI, multiple suicide missions north to face cruisers, bait for port attacks--these guys have earned their sea pay. A final indignity was lumping PTs, Q-boats, and MTBs from several nations into one mutt task force at Bataan. That base had a little fuel, but no torpedo reloads. In fact, only one boat had any weapons. The rest had to wave dirty skivvies at the enemy and shout insults in French.

Finally, with bombing at Bataan reaching epic proportions, the local HQ decided to not give away the VPs and devised one last indignity. The PTs would proceed to Cebu, where only a splash of fuel was available, then weave their way west, past Jolo (100 fuel on hand), to Tandjoengselor on Borneo's east coast for a full drink. South there were multiple IJN task forces inbound for Balikpapan, with known carriers. Balikpapan was the next and last source of PT fuel before a (probably) futile try for Soerbaja. "But", the PT CO thinks, "at least I can make them waste main battery ammo on me, lower CD responses, and maybe, just maybe, get the idiots to ram each other." Gotta keep earning that sea pay after all.

So, that's what the PTs do. After language barriers between the USN and RN are ironed out they leave on their last run south. And become the single best intel source the Allies have had to date.

I've gotten more milage out of mines so far in this game than all my AI games put together.

3) Spearfish finds another landing TF and gets the worst of it. But this indicates Japan is coming for Balikpapan in force and needs it fast.

4) Balikpapan is hit hard by LBA on the base, and hard from the MKB on the base forces. The light carriers are still flying Claudes. Don't know if this is typical in Scen. 2. But I've got nothing to fight them with, so it doesn't matter here. Balikpapan launches two small naval attacks which lose planes and get no hits.

5) In the actual landings CD is moderately effective, and fairly high Japanese surf losses are recorded. But the amphib bonus still works, and a big chunk of nasty gets ashore. Balikpapan has sent a fair bit of the garrison to Soerbaja since it is essentially indefensible in this era. The air forces will evac tomorrow, and the base will fall to the first good hit applied. This base is the red line in the march south in the DEI. The Allies will stand at Soerbaja. There is a light surface TF there, but the PTs' work has shown far too stiff an opposition to throiw them in now. When Soerbaja's time comes it might be necessary for Force Z to emerge, but right now is no time to throw away a CL and five DDs for nothing.

Considering your best weapon so far, perhaps you should rename your AAR "Mine! All Mine!"
I see you have discovered the secret to keeping your PTs from getting killed - don't give them any ammo! You can now use them for Nettie bait, recon, and SCTF ammo depletion at your leisure. [:D]
However, you might want to get the one carrying MacArthur sunk ...

I once knew a lass who worked at Mine Warfare Command in Charleston. She tried to tell me how wonderful sh . . . they are. [:)]

I think you may be right about the no-ammo. When they have any they seem to get obliterated real good. Without, they run around biting ankles.

There are so many Mac clones running around the game I may demand a DNA test on pipe=spit before I let any on my PTs.

Traffic

The action is once again at Balikpapan. So many red chunks flowing around the map the Allies can hardly find a gap. I used to be a sailor and restricted water makes me cringe. As a defender I like Makassar.

1) The Hardest Working PTs' luck runs out. With all the IJN metal in the area they reacted away from Balikpapan last turn and ended up two hexes SE with all but one boat at 0 fuel. They are jumped by yet ANOTHER heavy surface TF, and as they die they deliver another piece of intel.

PT Q-112, Shell hits 1, and is sunk
PT Q-113, Shell hits 1, and is sunk
MTB 10, Shell hits 1, and is sunk

What I wouldn't do for five fleet boats with working fish!

This is overkill and may show respect for the hidden Force Z and the USN carriers which he has not seen even once to my knowledge. With the wormhole they could be anywhere by now.

2) Landings continue at Balikpapan, with four rounds of CD fire taking healthy chunks out of xAPs, which Japan does not have in bunches. A large one, XAP Hikawa Maru, is hit many times and should sink. An APD takes a 6in shell hit as well. xAP Hakozaki Maru is set on fire. In general my experience with the Dutch CD is they are very good. To the brigade landing yesterday is added an SNLF. My guess is it is destined to run up the trail to grab Samarinda. There is a third TF with what looks like a base force and/or supplies.

3) Two Dutch subs are in the harbor and get off shots, which miss. The O-boat is damaged quite a bit. Out in the strait SS KXVIII shoots four at CVL Ryujo. They miss, but the pucker factor is there. If I can drive the carriers away the odds may shift to making a sortie from Soerbaja worth the losses.

4) LBA hits the Balikpapan base forces again. The MKB again hits the Dutch infantry. Very methodical. But no ground attack this turn. The Dutch bombard the beaches again.

5) In deep water in the South China Sea:

Sub attack near Balabac at 68,80

Allied Ships
SS KXVII, hits 1

Japanese ground losses:
10 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Non Combat: 1 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Sunk ship sound heard. Best guess is an engineer unit headed for northwest Borneo.

6) An R-boat sneaks into Hilo and is attacked. Nothing is there but light ASW TFs and a sub. Off PH an S-boat is on an ASW patrol of its own, moving between three hexes with six sighted enemy subs. I'll trade an S-boat for an I-boat any day. Southeast of Johnson I. Cachalot is attacked by a strong surface TF which is either really the KB (Kates seen on patrol) or a surface escort for the KB. I'm happy letting it cruise here and burn fuel.

The TF is:

Japanese Ships
BB Hyuga
BB Ise
CA Chikuma
CL Yubari
CL Tatsuta
DD Urakaze
DD Ushio
DD Sazanami
DD Shigure
DD Shiratsuyu

7) At Miri more mine action. The field is about 35% gone, but every little hit helps.

8) At Clark, one P-40 is fixed enough to struggle aloft. Flown by a Hollywood pilot they call "Wild Bill" Belushi, he does well and lives to buys drinks at the O-club. Of such things are legends made. [:'(]

No Allied losses

9) Toungoo in Burma is bombed then attacked by 14th Tank Regiment. The RAF base force has been in Strat mode for two days but has not left. It and the lousy 9th Burma Rifles retreat as the base falls.

10) SE of Sian a pretty good Chinese corps has been digging in across the river from a stack at least four LCUs deep for about ten days. It is there only to buy hex side control for Sian and time to gather in stragglers and strat move them north to begin the long walk out. The Japanese shock attack across the river with one unit only and are repulsed. I expect there will be another tomorrow or the next day with the entire stack. Sian has a lot of supplies and almost Forts 4, but it is not going to be defended much longer. It's served its purpose.

Ground combat at 84,42 (near Sian)

Numerous more air units come into CT from CONUS. The bet to send them in the very first days has worked so far. Hawaii is holding without them and Alaska has not been approached. About six units are in the outbound wormhole already and these will follow tomorrow. They may get somewhere useful in time to help at Palembang. If not, they should be able to wreck Palembang's oil industry.

Bullwinkle58 -> RE: Nothing Up My Sleeve: Magical Moose Tricks--Bullwinkle58 vs.1EyedJacks (12/15/2012 8:28:16 PM)

Mike is now on holiday break for a couple of weeks, so I hope the turns will accelerate. Just sent one back.

Question for the experts as I don't want to advertiase this in the general forum:

When moving a torpedo-capable Air HQ by transport air, what is the trigger at the recieving base before they can take torpedoes into inventory and load TBs? Is it a percentage, is it 100%, or something else? I'm trying to move a smaller RAF HQ from Singers to Palembang and have all the Aviation line in P. and less than 50% of Support. Replacements are OFF back in Singers, but the Singers piece still shows torpedoes in stock and the Palembang piece doesn't show loading them in as an option.

Anyone?

BBfanboy -> RE: Nothing Up My Sleeve: Magical Moose Tricks--Bullwinkle58 vs.1EyedJacks (12/15/2012 8:32:19 PM)

Don't know for sure, but my guess is that the air transports would move the people first and the torpedo cargo afterwards? Is there any button for ordering torps from Palembang supply in the HQ unit fragment on that base?

No, no button. So far as I know you can't dump torpedo inventory once it's in an HQ since it's really sort of a supply and not a device in a DB sense. I also don't think torpedoes get moved with an Air HQ when it goes by sea. Been a long time since I did it, but I think it unloads at New Base with the button there but zero in stock.

FWIW, the Palembang piece shows the HQ CO already too.

Going on four years with this monster and I'm still asking questions like this! [:'(]

"Mr. Sulu, set a course . . . No! Not that one!!!!"

Saturday evening, punch up e-mail. Movie in the box with a note "This turn hurt my feelings." Gotta give Mike props for writing the tease.

1) Bataan, building furiously, supplies dwindling. But the Manila Bay CD is among the best on the map. Everybody knows that, right? But AE's path-finding routines will not be denied, sometimes. After I watched the movie I mailed back asking if this was on purpose, or if it was a local CO decision. Mike's answer:" It was a loco CO decision."

This was a sound effect bonanza, with multiple mine explosions overlaid on CD rounds striking home. Sunk ship effect heard at end. Really?!

2) Not all good news in the PI. My tanks, after re-flipping Iba, were procceding to Lingayan, blind, to do the same there. Arrived in a vacant hex waiting for attack next day. Found by 100+ heavy bombers, smeared, then a big stack entered hex and attacked, throwing tanks back to Iba in disarray with heavy losses. When one gets greedy, one pays. Complete mistake on Allies' part.

3) CD battle at Balikpapan goes strongly for Dutch, with a lot more damage done to landing force. But the ground attack comes off at strong odds for Japan, and Balikpapan falls. All defenders retreat up the trail to Samarinda, where they will ultimately be destoryed or driven into the jungle.

6) Loaded Aussie ground LCU at Perth for movement to Cocos I. which is becoming a key piece of dirt. It allows air units from CT to come on map and be delivered for crate-repair and then flown onto Java or Sumatra. Fuel and time savings from CT as well as low risk of losing xAKs. Downstream it is a good patrol base for watching the Java Sea area and key straits. Currently it is also Force Z's home. Five more air units come into CT today. Many are small and have permanent withdrawl dates, but they have uses in the next six weeks.

7) At Clark "Wild Bill" Belushi's run comes to an end. The O-clubbers will miss the free rounds. No fighters in any condition remain in Luzon now.

8) With a hint from another AAR I slap my head and load the USMC Wildcat unit at a still unmolested Wake Island onto the xAKL which just delivered a slug of supply to the defenders. Will move it to Midway.

"Ferris Wheel" in Subic is something dirty. (Don't tell Canoerebel. [:)])

Yes, xAKLs can. I thought they always could. Also xAPs. ( I have at least six small, 4000ers loaded with an air unit each moving from CT to Cocos right now.) And I'm pretty sure LSTs, etc. Anything whcih can form a Transport TF can do it so far as I know.

Bull: regarding the Air HQ and TTs.  You will need the majority of the unit present at the base to be able to request TT's.  I am not 100% positive, but I think you will have to request them again.  You got a good die roll with those DDs attacking Bataan.

I didn't know that xAKLs could transport planes either.  Thanks for telling me.

AHA! (Head slap here)!
I was trying to get them to form an Air Transport TF and that option wasn't available. Never even thought of a simple Transport TF. (Wanders off muttering something about game designers ... ).

I think the Air HQ SUpport line was at 51%/49% last turn so it might flip to Palembang this time if that's the way it runs. I figured I'd have to re-buy the fish. More than willing to get some work out of the Beests. The've been pretty much a non-factor so far.

I've found, in my style, that I use Air Transport less than 5% of the time. I never have a capable ship where I need it when I need it, but I almost always have aviation support where it's going. I crate 'em up and get them going on any Transport hull that's handy. I pay the reassemble time at the other end, just a cost of being disorganized.

Just a reminder to, where possible, break up units that are being sea transported into fractional elements before loading. Sure, it takes three times as many ships, but nothing spoils the mood like an entire squadron / sentai going down with one efficiently loaded air transport ship.

Good idea. Also one I've never done. [:)]

The Rodney Dangerfield of Chinese HQs

Kind of a blah turn. Recon/intel by disaster.

1) The Lusu War Area unit of the Chinese army starts the game deep in bad lands down near Shanghai. It was hit hard on about Day 2, and has been punched and kicked as it walked NW toward sequential bases the Allies don't own anymore. Hit again today, hard, near Chengchow. But it survives, keeps walking, the red tie and sweat-stained shirt its only defense against hecklers. No respect.

2) A brand new AMC conversion, one day from the Canal Zone wormhole, is sunk by I-1. So there's a sub off San Diego. Great.

3) USS Dolphin penetrates Johnson and attacks a large fleet tanker unloading. Misses. Takes six bad hits but survives to shoot at a BB and miss. Johnson is the new Truk apparently. Geting Kate ASW hits still down SE of Johnson, so apparently there's fuel enough coming in to keep the KB local.

4) Clark gets bombed as per usual. Supplies there are down to about 700. Moving all engineering units but one back to Bataan and abandoning fort building at Clark. Combat arms only. In-unit supplies for everyone at Clark are also in the red, so it will be a short defense when he finally moves. Manila still squirts out a few supplies every turn. The last infantry unit defending Manila was split into three and the 'C' piece went south and re-took Batangas. Iba has a small infantry unit sitting on it again, along with the torched tank unit from yesterday. None of these harassing moves matter much, but they do make him plan a little and perhaps delay a day or two. Bataan is bombed every day and won't hold for weeks, but days. He's in no hurry.

5) Additional landings to clean up the east coast of Borneo. Sub attacks and ASW responses out in the strait. Still considering what Balikpapan might be worth.

What makes you sure they're Kates? Are you sure that they're representative of KB (and not, say, mKB) being in the area still?

Only that the reports are consistent. It's true that over the years I've noticed that Allied FOW reports make every plane not otherwise positively IDed a torpedo bomber. I've often had them sighted over China 1000 miles from water.

I also had positive air squadron IDs on most of the typical MKB carriers off Palembang within the last ten days. But you're right. I don't know what's near Hawaii. It might be a piece of the KB, although I have four fleet carriers--soon to be five--he doesn't have located so far as I know. Although that sub near San Diego is torublesome. Have to look up if I-1 has a Glen.

"Hello? Sumatra? Anybody home?"

The Matrix server just ate my carefully crafted, very witty post on today's events. I will not repeat them.

1) Landing at Djambi. Shock attack. Base falls. Toehold in Sumatra.

2) Major bombing on Iba (150 planes) takes focus off Clark for a day. Supplies there zero. Sending aviation units forward to Lingayan to die. Cannot feed them.

3) 57 mines cleared in one day at Lingayan. Expect landings soon.

4) Other stuff.

Mike is home today, we're trying to flip. Have a turn in the box. Bye.

Ah, shucks. [:'(]

Just sent back the fastest flip in the game to date. Djambi has 250 oil! Moved the whole knife drawer to Palembang for a turn or two. I think there's no CAP there yet. If there is it should be MKB-based. Anyway, we shall see.

Also got intel of 4th Div. prepping for Pearl Harbor. Hmm.

"Flipper, Lost To No Porpoise"

Hey, best I can do on short notice. Another turn-around turn.

1) Continuing the theme of risking subs where major fleet units are sitting Right There, USS Porpoise goes into Johnson and finds several BBs. Forced to surface she takes several/many main battery strikes and blows up. I don't like losing subs, but he'll run out of battleships before I run out of them. The ASW rating game is still strongly in the sub's favor, and two fish will take a BB out for much of a year.

Submarine attack near Johnston Island at 164,112

Japanese Ships
BB Fuso
BB Nagato
DD Yunagi
DD Asanagi
BB Yamashiro

Allied Ships
SS Porpoise, hits 19, and is sunk

SS Porpoise is sighted by escort
DD Yunagi attacking submerged sub ....
DD Asanagi fails to find sub and abandons search
DD Yunagi fails to find sub, continues to search...
DD Yunagi attacking submerged sub ....
SS Porpoise forced to surface!
DD Asanagi firing on surfaced sub ....
BB Yamashiro firing on surfaced sub ....
DD Asanagi firing on surfaced sub ....
BB Yamashiro firing on surfaced sub ....
BB Yamashiro firing on surfaced sub ....
BB Yamashiro firing on surfaced sub ....
Sub slips beneath the waves

2) HMS Trusty, just arrived in theater, goes into a mineless Miri and misses a large xAK. But at least her paint is the right color. I hear the USN is going to copy it in April.

3) Rodney Dangerfield finds another bad room. No respect times Nth.

Morning Air attack on Lusu War Area , at 87,46 , near Sinyang

Weather in hex: Clear sky

Raid spotted at 27 NM, estimated altitude 7,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 8 minutes

Japanese aircraft
Ki-48-Ib Lily x 23

No Japanese losses

Allied ground losses:
16 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 3 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

4) Bunch of China bombing, Clark bombing, Burma bombing, Malaysia bombing (tiny base force walking around outside Victoria Point is driving the Lilys bat-sheet.) But no Djambi bombing. All the new arrivals at P. asked for tea in bed and the morning paper (rubber futures rise on news of Japanese advances. (Rimshot!!) ) Maybe tomorrow they fly, oil wells die.

Cheerio!

"I came from a real tough neighborhood. In the local restaurant I sat down and had broken leg of lamb."

"I went to see my doctor. "Doctor, every morning when I get up and look in the mirror... I feel like throwing up. What's wrong with me?" He said, "I don't know but your eyesight is perfect."

"My sex life is terrible; my wife put a mirror over the dog's bed. Actually she did put a mirror over our bed. She says she likes to watch herself laugh."

I'm so ugly... I worked in a pet shop, and people kept asking how big I'd get."

"I asked him, "Who said you could fool around with my wife?" He said, "Everybody."

"A girl phoned me the other day and said, "Come on over, there's nobody home." I went over. Nobody was home."

"My wife only has sex with me for a purpose. Last night it was to time an egg."

"I could tell that my parents hated me. My bath toys were a toaster and a radio."

"A travel agent told I could spend seven nights in Hawaii… no days, just nights."

"I have good looking kids. Thank goodness my wife cheats on me."

"I told my psychiatrist that everyone hates me. He said I was being ridiculous… everyone hasn't met me yet."

"This morning when I put on my underwear I could hear the fruit-of-the-loom guys laughing at me."

"Yowza, yowza, yowza!! And the band plays on and on!!"

Flip Day continues. I sorta like this if it makes him burn off amphib bonus time without a lot of landings.

1) He's working diligently to clear Mersing of mines. JB shows 31 LCUs in the hex. It's possible Singers falls to the initial shock attack. Not much I can do. Last CL in the yards is coming out half-repaired and will run for it. No air there except a few Wirraways. Moved the Hurris to Palembang today to consolidate their punch. They did well on the attack on P. today. Got 15 up.

2) Two strikes fly on Djambi and do four Oil points damage. First combat employment of A-24 Banshees, so he knows where some of them are. They increase the pucker factor for merchants.

Tried to send an ML from Singers to Djambi and told it's not a sea hex. So he must have landed the SNLF in a non-base hex and the Shock attack was due to the river crossing. If so they can't have much supply.

3) Dinking air attacks all over the place, but nothing substantial except Palembang as previously reported. The sudden movement of several units in Luzon seems to have gotten his attention. He doesn't know they're being sent to die. At this point I want him to attack Manila or Clark while I have a smattering of supply left. The VP ratio for Filipino troops versus Japanese is in the Allies' favor.

4) The RAF Air HQ still won't flip to Palembang. I changed the HQ to a non-restricted to see if it would break it loose, but no go. There is only 17 Support left in Singers, but it stubbornly refuses to shift to P. and let me buy torps. Must be yet another rule I don't know.

5) Japan attacks Batangas with tanks and re-takes it from my 'C' fragment, sending it back to Manila beat up. I had hoped he would use infantry and spend a day or two. I did not know there were tanks down south of Manila. Now I do.

6) Sending DDs to SF where two shiny new battleships have just been delivered. I also have Colorado upgraded in Seattle, waiting escorts to go to Pearl. The big surface TF at Johnson sailed with a last sighting of it moving east. I'm a little worried about the 4th Div. intel last turn. The round out regiments of the Americal Div. are strat loading at EC for Fort Ord. A third full division on Oahu would make me sleep better. Forts at Pearl are almost at 4. Port just went to 8.

7) Retrieved remnants of Lark from Rabaul, the ones which couldn't fly out. Have rescue ships, singles, going to the two islands SW of Kwajalein. Ocean and the N-one. They might sneak in and lift Wren and the other garrison back to NG. If not it's two xAKLs. I'm hoping his air search is pointed due east.
