I took the SAT once - December 1978. I still remember one vocabulary word on the test: "wax." Antipodeon wasn't on the test nor has there every been a reason for a Georgian to use the word. However, we are big on these words: supple, winsome, scintillating, agrandizement, and paradigm.

Despite that, its a word that should be used more often

Swinging back on topic for a moment, he's miles behind his schedule and surely he should be realising by now the Palembang problem

Australia (and the surrounding area), because it's on the other side of the world from Britain. IIRC the word's origins (at least in usage) are associated with the British Empire.

I don't have time right now to put this in the form of an Aristotelian syllogism (the cat just yukked behind my chair for the third time today and I must be off to google "market for used cats"), but if the Fox is antipodean, and the word means essentially "from Australia", then who was in town this weekend last? Awful, awful movie.

Oddly, I liked the movie for the same reason I liked the book. It's unabashedly a "boys book". It is a fun , sword fighting adventure. Maybe I had a good teacher but with a good translation and the frame of mind that The Iliad and is a fun adventure story it goes down a lot easier. Conversely, The Odyssey, is more of a cerebral morality journey. more a "girls book". However, we surly can agree that the movie of the Odyssey is outstanding. I speak of the great "Jason and the Argonauts"

Jason is a whole other story isn't it? The "O" is about Ulysses'/Odysseus' voyage home to rescue his wife Penelope from the suitors. Jason is looking for the Golden Fleece.

The writers guild thinks it is THE best TV show. Just saw a list the other day for 101 best written shows as determined by the WGA. Sopranos topped the list, followed by Seinfeld and MASH, I think.

I've actually got several Antipodean clients, and that includes Kiwiland as well, so I've known the term for some time as it's the easiest way to talk about both countries.

It is brave for an Australian to discuss cricket in public right now, although he must of thought he was safe in Minneapolis. We are on the cusp of the biggest series we have on the cricket calendar and the Australian team is in the doldrums. Expectations are that we will lose badly...

Also, a very antipodean flavour in the combat report posted, with Australia and Canberra in the thick of the action. Was that a hint?

I remember when HBO was doing early promos for the show in the late 90s. Just the family name with a bird sitting on one of the letters I think. I thought it was going to be a sitcom. Premium cable didn't do series then; it was all movies and had been for decades. After the first ep of "The Sopranos" I remember sitting there with my mouth hanging open. And that feeling never let up for 85 more eps, right up to the final black out in the diner. A monumental artistic achievement on every level--writing, acting, editing, music, casting.

100% chance I drank beer. The Fox drank all sorts of colorful concoctions. I remember one both yellow and blue, with specific gravities involved in the making. He has interesting "rules" in bars re the bartenders. They seemed to love him for them. And within a day he had a whole roster of mixologist friends all over town.
