Aircraft Pools and Production

Pools of obsolete aircraft unlikely to be used (unless as Kamikaze): Ki-27b, B5N1, G3M2, Ki-36, Ki-59, A5M4. Most everything else can be utilised. G3M3 and D3A1 have comfortable pools to cover losses, most others are just handling day to day losses and upgrades.

Allies manage another dud, otherwise quiet.

China

A few small bombings.

Chengtu attack reduces forts to 1 but result is 1:2 and I have messed up and allowed the 13th Chinese Corps to reinforce. Will have to hold off attacks for a turn. A recon regiment used in the attack is wrecked.

2 divisions obliterate the 8th New Chinese Corps East of Chungking.

An attack on the Kienko road does not do well but a good attack in the plains.

Chungking airfield is reporting as 83 damage and Kienko as 42 so I should be able to keep these closed and use the air force to destroy Chinese in the open. This should keep Niekiang safe.

The current state of shipping liquids back to the home isles. Fuel is mostly under control but there are some oil stock piles. I hope to clear this down to maintenance levels before the Allies get better torpedoes.

Fuel & oil from Miri/Brunei/Tarakan has been dropped on Luzon or Formosa.

Fuel from Java and Balikpapan is sent to places to be used.

Oil from Sumatra is sent to Malaysia. Fuel is set to Malaysia or all the way home.

Absolutely, keep the fuel and oil flowing, and avoid wasting it. Protect the LI and the aircraft factories.

There are very few factories that I plan on changing between lines, so most factories will be expanded once only. That means I have about 1,000,000 supplies needed to fix all the factories (or about 5% of the production in rest of 42/43/44).

The SRA produces about 27,000 supply in the form of fuel/oil per day so these costs come down to the margins around when that production is lost.

A lot of search planes are lost to CAP. It is now confirmed that he is attacking Tulagi and that Allied carriers are in the area. 6 of the old BB bombard Tulagi during the day and some Nells and Oscars make suicidal attacks. The bombardment damages all the Mavis at the base and more than decimates the defending engineering units. A few Nells get through but score no hits, A mini-sub takes a pot shot on the approach and is badly damaged. It is also out of fuel.

Sightings are of many task forces including two carrier forces but it is not clear if that is all his carriers.

He may planning on a double attack and also hitting Buin or Rossel Island. All aviation assets will be sent to Rabaul and set to a relatively short range strike so if he comes closer they may get a pot shot. Surface shipping will pull back closer to Rabaul and subs flood the area.

Pacific

A CV engagement happens near Munda. KB rushes South and the Allies drift North. Day finds the forces some 80 nautical miles apart and massive air strikes fly both ways, LBA also joins in but despite getting a lot of aircraft through CAP does little good. The only loss on the day is a mini-sub abandoned at Tulagi.

CV Status:

Hiyo 10/6/5
Junyo 7/0/4
Shoho 24/7/5/4
Zuiho 48/59/13/7
Hiryu 41/18/20/6
Soryu 59/19/31/88
Zuikaku 51/44/39/7

Also damaged:
BB Hyuga 28/4/7
CA Suzuya 25/0/0
CA Kinugasa 43/21/11
AV Kamoi 25/7/1
And an AKE that is doomed

Soryu will be scuttled but the rest can be saved if protected from the Allied next strike.

Hiyo, Junyo, Akagi, Kaga and Shokaku can make up a reasonable strike force if I can find the planes for them.

Ryuho and Ryujo are too far away to join in.

What is the best thing to do with the surface combat task forces? Should I send them in amongst the Allied forces to cover the carriers and, possibly, do some damage. Or do I send them on a path that takes them through Allied areas at night and out again for the day. Or do I keep them back with the carriers?

Most of the LBA morale is shot but the aircraft diverted from damaged carriers are good and pose a threat to the Allies if they pursue.

Damage to Allies:
quote:

CA Quincy, Torpedo hits 1
CV Lexington, Bomb hits 2, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
CA Chester

CA Portland, Bomb hits 3, on fire
CV Illustrious, Bomb hits 3
CV Wasp, Bomb hits 4, Torpedo hits 3, on fire, heavy damage
CV Lexington, on fire
CA Quincy
CV Yorktown
CV Saratoga, Bomb hits 1, Torpedo hits 1, on fire

DD Downes

CA Louisville
CV Lexington, on fire
CV Saratoga
CA Chicago
CA Chester, Torpedo hits 1

CL Leander
BB Warspite

Aircraft losses suggest that about 2 carriers worth of aircraft diverted but had nowhere to land. So that is Enterprise and Wasp not flight capable but the other 6 carriers are probably in a position to pursue my damaged ships.

Wow, looks like you won that round if you can get away with IJN damage control. Well done.

What do you think the prospects are for your BBs? I would be cautious with them...risk/reward ratio doesn't seem good to me with Warspite and North Carolina basically undamaged plus two CVs unhurt too.

Plus, I think you would need to send the BBs near Tulagi to catch him -- further away from your bases....

You have given him a bloody nose...be happy and conserve your forces for more important real estate.

IMHO. Free advice is cheap and often wrong. [:D]

pws1225 -> RE: Castles in the Sand - Spidery(J) vs MrKane(A) no MrKane please (4/10/2014 10:07:51 PM)

Nicely done! And for more free advice, I agree with Lowpe that it would be best to keep your BBs under LBA and CV cover.

Lowpe -> RE: Castles in the Sand - Spidery(J) vs MrKane(A) no MrKane please (4/10/2014 11:59:01 PM)

In looking closer at the report...what altitude did the Nells go in at? And were the Jakes all on search/asw?

Spidery -> RE: Castles in the Sand - Spidery(J) vs MrKane(A) no MrKane please (4/11/2014 7:37:06 AM)

Thank-you for the cheering words folks. I'm not as happy about the result. I seem to have blown much of my pre-war trained pilots without getting a single enemy ship sunk. Next time we engage I won't have such good pilots.

Looking a bit more closely I see two of my carriers have a cruise speed of 1 which is going to make it hard to save them.

I will send a CL/DD force to a destination just a bit South so that it should sweep through the area and return North before the day but may encounter some stragglers if he retreats South. The BB and CA forces will move to cover the retreating carriers. I am also expecting a lot of subs to move to try and catch me and will try and cover the string of islands with ASW forces so I can engage some of them in shallow water.

Two of the CS ships were with the KB and had all their Jakes on search at 6000 feet. With the carrier forces so close (I had expected to be engaging at range 6 or so with him in the Tulagi area) they were lost to CAP in droves. There were also some Jakes at Buik on 50% search/50% attack, 11 of those attacked.

I had my Vals on the carriers at 10% search which probably wasn't necessary given the close engagement.

The Nells & Betties were at 6000 feet, the KB planes at 12000 feet (with some A6M5 on CAP at 18000 feet), some army planes were at 1000 feet with Low Nav trained pilots in them.

setloz -> RE: Castles in the Sand - Spidery(J) vs MrKane(A) no MrKane please (4/11/2014 10:52:09 AM)

You are right, it's not a fair exchange for you. :(

I don't think there's much you could do to turn this around. On an optimistic level, you stand to lose at least 3 carriers.
Keep in mind that TFs in port do not disband until AFTER the air combat phase has resolved. I've lost several BBs that I was hoping to save by disbanding in port because of this.
So, with the allied CVs still hunting, it wouldn't help if you tried to disband the heavily damaged CVs in a port like Buin.

And of course, I'll state the obvious - he's surely going to send lots of TFs to clean up your stragglers. So prepare for night and day surface combat.

Good luck!

Forecast is for clear skies[:D].

The Zuiho is trying to make a full speed move that may well break it. The Zuihaku can move at cruise speed to Buka. Everything should reach Buka this turn, or sink. The intact CVs are stopping 1 hex off there. SCTF have been left on the approaches and there is a nice minefield freshly laid. I have flown more aircraft into Rabaul and Buka and am airlifting some more aviation support to Buka.

Another worry is that a lot of ships are short of AA ammo.

Could be interesting to see what happens[sm=00000289.gif]

You are right, it's not a fair exchange for you. :(

I don't think there's much you could do to turn this around.

...

Good luck!

I hope there is something I can do or I have just wasted 4 hours moving planes around, sorting out task force composition, etc.[:D]

September 14th 1942

Air Losses: 45 Japanese, 5 Allied, 19 Pilots

Allies land at:

Pacific

Allied carriers retreat to Tulagi but three cruiser forces pursue.

The first one is of 3 CL and meets a cover force of 3 CA and suffers
quote:

Japanese Ships
CA Maya, Shell hits 1
CA Nachi, Shell hits 1
CA Mikuma, Shell hits 12
DD Hatsuyuki, Shell hits 1
DD Ayanami
DD Sagiri
DD Yugiri, Shell hits 1, heavy fires

Allied Ships
CL St. Louis, Shell hits 7, Torpedo hits 1, heavy fires, heavy damage
CL Helena, Shell hits 6, heavy fires
CL Honolulu, Shell hits 1, on fire
DD Lardner, Shell hits 1
DD Woodworth
DD Bancroft, Shell hits 3, on fire
DD Sims, Shell hits 1
DD Hughes
DD Anderson
DD Hammann

The second one is of 3 CL and gets up against the KB and the big BB guns that are useless. CS Chiyoda and DD Kagero are lost.
quote:

Japanese Ships
CV Junyo
CV Hiyo, Shell hits 1
CVL Shoho, Shell hits 1
CS Chitose, Shell hits 3
CS Chiyoda, Shell hits 7, heavy fires, heavy damage
BB Hiei, Shell hits 1
BB Kirishima
BB Ise, Shell hits 2
DD Kagero, Shell hits 1, Torpedo hits 1, and is sunk
DD Arashi
DD Tanikaze
DD Arashio
DD Kasumi, Shell hits 1
DD Hibiki
DD Shinonome

Allied Ships
CL Boise
CL Phoenix
CL Nashville, Shell hits 3
DD Laffey
DD Mustin
DD Russell
DD O'Brien, Shell hits 2
DD Walke

The third one has 4 CA and finds no action.

Allied subs score one hit on the CVL Zuiho but it is a dud. Sea and air ASW claims many hits but no idea how much damage really inflicted.

The only air strikes are against the Allied CA group which has no CAP. The first strike is of 56 Nells or Betties, average NavT skill of 70, experience about 60, attacking with torpedoes under partial cloud against 4 CA they score zero hits[:@]. Next up is 18 Kates, another 18 misses[:(]. Finally, 16 Kates and 24 Vals score[:)]:
quote:

CA Minneapolis, Bomb hits 2, Torpedo hits 1, heavy fires
CA Vincennes, Bomb hits 1
CA Astoria
CA New Orleans, Bomb hits 3, on fire

Ship sunk sounds are heard, Intel is claiming the CL St Louis and a CA. VP gain suggests just the St Louis.

Status of CV see below. The Zuiho is unlikely to survive. The others should survive if they can make it through the sub threat to somewhere safe.

The IJA performs much better than the IJN.

China situation.

Priority is to get across the Jialing and establish a route for fuel to get to Chengtu. This will generate the supply needed to fuel the offensive in the plains.

Second priority is to damage Allied forces that are in the open.

Third priority is the push on Paoshan.

South pacific and the sub infestation.

It is getting real easy for my ASW aircraft, they can almost drop a DC anywhere and get a near miss!

Can I risk having ships at Kavieng or Rabaul to get some fixing done and if so for how long?

Once he has Tulagi or Lunga expanded to level 4, Rabaul will be in extended range for medium bombers, even at level 2 he can fly heavy bombers with extended range load. At level 5 he will be able to launch massed heavy bomber strikes at normal range so definitely need to be out of there before then.

Rabaul is in extended range for B-17D and B-24D from Australia and in normal range for LB-30.

The Zuiho, if it can put the fires out, and the Zuikaku will have difficulty making it to Truk through the sub menace with their current speed and state
