I'd also put some AA there. A day of intense air bombing can distrupt the LCU so much without AA that even a small number of paras can overcome the defences.
Usually my small atolls defences are built around an experienced SNLF unit, a AA Bn and a base force (with some engineers in it)

Spidery -> RE: Castles in the Sand - Spidery(J) vs MrKane(A) no MrKane please (4/26/2014 11:04:00 AM)

Allied day air loss is showing as 3 but VP for allied air loss has gone up by 15 on the day. That suggests 12 planes lost either through disbandment or to ops losses re-locating. As I can't see any reason he should be disbanding aircraft, that suggests a massive move of airpower.

I was mainly looking at protecting air bases in Burma but also some bases in rear areas being used for resource shipping (places like Boela) or as temporary repair ports.

I'm reluctant to spread AA to bases that will probably be bypassed because it will all be needed to protect industry and is hard to evacuate from small atolls.

I don't know. How can I find out?

The air group button on the menu bar...then across the top of popup. I will post a shot in my aar. Planes on ships aren't included.

Thanks lowpe, never spotted that[sm=innocent0009.gif]

Land based: 4595, 4164 ready
Naval air: 790, 652 ready

Interestingly the army has 2374 planes and the navy 3011 (that comes from expanding FP groups). No wonder it is so difficult to train navy pilots.

Spidery -> RE: Castles in the Sand - Spidery(J) vs MrKane(A) no MrKane please (4/26/2014 1:38:08 PM)

Total losses therefore are about 50% of total in service.

Pilot losses are 326 MIA, 373 WIA, 993 KIA so MIA & KIA is about 50% of the number of planes lost.

Very few groups are not at 100% of their permitted level but quite a few lack the full complement of reserve aircraft. I have a small shortage of Nicks, Sallies and Vals at the moment so there are some of those groups needing aircraft.

How strong a defense is needed at a base to:

a) protect against a surprise Allied parachute attack.
b) protect against a surprise Allied sub-transport assault.

If it's in a clear terrain, i'd say at least 50 AVs with some forts (3 minimum). If it's +2 or +3 terrain even less probably, but 50 AVs is a good rule of thumb imh0

I'd agree with that. The allies have some incredible effective Air Mobile units.

I assume you are speaking of one of the AAMG units rather than the units that are equipped with 75mm or larger cannon?

No, i'd place there units equipped with 75mm. I agree that it may not be ideal to disperse your AA so much, but there are places that really need to be defended. In Burma this may be different. if you have a mobile reserve you could grab the base back easily. On atolls, things might be more difficult

Spidery -> RE: Castles in the Sand - Spidery(J) vs MrKane(A) no MrKane please (4/26/2014 7:32:45 PM)

Around Guadalcanal

He seems to be making Lunga into a major airbase. I guess it is very hard to get in and bombard this.

From the North the approach is via Tulagi and I expect that is heavily mined and has a larger SCTF present.

From the West the blocked hexsides mean would need to start from too close. The same problem coming from the North East and from due East would have to start too near Ndeni.

The only viable approach is from the South West but the start for that is too far from any of my forces.

Also, the return path will be through Tulagi unless I use some home port such as Belep Islands.

Suppose I set up a CL force near Rossel Island, 8 hexes from Fennell Island, home port as Rossel Island then set full speed and a destination of Fennell Island (retirement allowed set). Will that force move at night to Fennell Island, engage the forces there, and then retreat however far it can manage given damage sustained? Or will it get left hanging out around Fennell Island?

Lowpe -> RE: Castles in the Sand - Spidery(J) vs MrKane(A) no MrKane please (4/26/2014 11:11:02 PM)

It should work. Depends on how aggressive your commander is plus a million other things...it would be sweet to close with a bunch of battleships at night...torpedo heaven.

Nothing is ever 100 percent reliable in this game.[:D]

Lots of moonlight, how about a massed night torpedo run....You have a fair amount of them around if I recall correctly.

Allies occupy:
Japanese land at:
Allies land at:

Pacific

Try a night strike, 38 planes find their targets, no losses, no hits[:(].

S-35 is attacked at Buik and suffers three full on hits. May have been sunk[:)].

Allies launch a minor night strike at Rossel Island.

Dropping small forces to secure dot bases around Rabaul.

Burma

I send some SCTF to Akyab hoping to catch some raiders but no luck. Vildebeest and Hurricances attack and are slaughtered by the CAP. 20 Hurricanes and 15 Vildebeest downed for the loss of 3 A6M2, 3 Ki-43-IIb, 2 Ki-44-IIa, and, best of all, only 2 pilots KIA[8D].

7 Vildebeest make it through CAP but all miss and most are shot down in post air combat. Of 16 that attacked only 1 makes it back[:)].

China

A crafty plan to pursue retreating forces and help cut off others fails because the Chinese surrender[;)]. More damage inflicted. I have a plan to try and catch 38 units in the North[:-].

Australia

Allies hit Darwin at night. Minor damage but 3 planes lost on the ground[:(]. Gives a chance to recover and I will soon have some Nicks in place for night cover (I had pulled the small Tojo group to add to the day CAP).

Glens have spotted three task forces containing carriers so this could be all of his carrier force heading into Pearl.

Minor night strike at Rossel Island.

Burma

Quiet

China

More of the same.

Australia

4E bombers hit Darwin at night. Some Ki-43-1c meet them and lose out but flak then downs four of the bombers and the strikes are pretty ineffective. During the day, P-38E sweep and the losses from Ki-44-IIa are bad trading 16 for 2.

Engineering

Sapporo expands to 4. Forts at Rossel Island expand to 3.

Allies expand many out of the way places.

At least they flew, and might scare the Allies some. Curious, what ships did they target if you remember?

Spidery -> RE: Castles in the Sand - Spidery(J) vs MrKane(A) no MrKane please (4/28/2014 3:09:06 PM)

About half struck at a BB task force most heading for the Mississippi or New Mexico.

The others went for a transport task force at Lunga and most attacked some xAP.

Given these are the same pilots that managed 56 misses against cruisers, I think there is something wrong with them!

Lowpe -> RE: Castles in the Sand - Spidery(J) vs MrKane(A) no MrKane please (4/28/2014 6:51:58 PM)

Not much scarier than seeing torpedo planes get free shots at your ships even if they all missed. Is the moon waxing or waning?

Spidery -> RE: Castles in the Sand - Spidery(J) vs MrKane(A) no MrKane please (4/28/2014 8:04:11 PM)

It is getting darker (is that waning?).

I expect he will have some night CAP up now but may give it another try with a very low altitude setting.

Spidery -> RE: Castles in the Sand - Spidery(J) vs MrKane(A) no MrKane please (4/28/2014 8:12:33 PM)

I now have a good pile of PP and need to decide what to do with it.

I am gradually replacing the captains of my better DD with the hope that they can better attack subs. Also may up the captains on the escorts that act as flags for tanker convoys. Air groups, subs and major ships all seem to have good commanders, although I occasionally find one I missed.

I can build up a reserve of PP to buy out divisions in China when they start getting trashed from attacks at Chungking.

Or, there are some 1E bomber groups that I can convert to fly Nicks for a massive 250 PP + the cost to derestrict them. Is it worth doing that?

75 Points to convert them to 2e bombers seems more reasonable even if they just become asw platforms.

Fully agree. Nick is not worth that cost.

I-10 finds the Saratoga South of Pearl Harbour and puts a torpedo into it (why did she only launch 2?). Saratoga was already damaged so that is extra nice[8D].

A6M5 and Ki-43-1c based at Buka fly a long way to Tulagi to sweep there. They do well, looks like 13 F4F-4 shot down for 3 Zero and 3 Oscar lost. Pilot and aircraft fatigue though is quite high.

I-121 slips into Rennell Island and drops some mines. DD Nicholas discovers them the hard way[:D] and is, probably, sunk[:)].

Burma

Quiet

China

More of the same.

Nicks encounter flak while attacking low and 4 are lost[:(].

Australia

Heavier night bombing of Darwin and I lose 5 planes on the ground. In the air, 4 Oscars for 1 B-24D and 1 B-26. Allied strikes are now coming in at 9000 feet so flak is less effective. Some Nicks have arrived to add to the night defense (they didn't fly last night).

The 8 men at Wyndham are unable to hold out against the 24th Infantry Division and supporting artillery[X(].

Engineering

Buka to 4.

R&D

H8K2 enters production. A size 30 R&D factory switches to production. The H8K2 is so much better than the H6K4 (armoured, more durable, better range, more weapons, faster) that I will probably switch most groups to using the H8K2 as soon as possible and just leave 1, or 2, to use up the stock of H6K4. There is one group that withdraws in 1943.

D4Y1-C enters production. Will convert a factory to this at about size 15 and make this the IJN recon plane of choice.

The Ta-Chi 3 Radar is available. This doesn't seem much better than the Ta-Chi 2 and is replaced by the Ta-Chi 7 in 1/43 which is a major improvement. So will hold off from doing many upgrades.

September in review.

A mixed month.

In China, the defense has collapsed. In Burma, Magwe remains under full production, well past when I expected it to have been flattened. In the South Pacific the Allies have taken Guadalcanal area. At sea lost two and a half carriers for one enemy carrier and both sides have damaged carriers.

Overall VP: Japan +2972 Allied +817
VP for air: Japan +631 Allied +661
VP for land: Japan +953 Allied +113
VP for bases: Japan +854 Allied -445
VP for sea: Japan +534 Allied +492

(Japanese VP for sea calculated from the other values)

September Economy

A good rise in supplies, probably won't continue for the rest of the year as the Ha-45 will enter production in a few days and will need expanding to cover the eventual demand for N1K, B7A2, and Ki-84.

Also, good fuel stockpiles being made. Oil supplies falling steadily and would run out about 1946 if no Allied action! HI gain is low and will have about 800,000 at the end of the year but this in part reflecting the good stockpiles of armaments, vehicles, and engines and why there is so much fuel.

Oil: -65,966
Fuel: +201,102
Supply: +188,599
HI: +46,886
Vehicles: +4,336

Plane Production and Pools

A large stockpile of Nates also.

G4M1 pool is exhausted so will be upgrading to the G3M3 but still have large surpluses of G3M2 and G3M3.

B5N1 stock will be kept for use in Kamikaze.

Spidery -> RE: Castles in the Sand - Spidery(J) vs MrKane(A) no MrKane please (4/29/2014 1:54:55 PM)

Situation in China

At A, lots of Chinese, mostly damaged corps, provided I can take the hex North-West from there before the Chinese get there I should be able to trap all these.

At B, in a couple of days I can attack here. If they haven't left by then I should be able to retreat them North East and again into Chungking where they can be destroyed. However, the forces North West from here can probably make it to India. I do have some forces moving onto the minor road to try and force them to take a long way round.

At C, Chinese are weakening and I hope to take this soon. However, Tsuyung, Paoshan and the hex on the Burmese border will all be strong-points so it is likely to take the rest of 1942 before I can reach Burma.

At Chungking he has about 120,000 troops with 650 guns. I think these will prove to be largely intact divisions with supporting artillery (I have eliminated one AT and one ART unit). So I estimate that as about 5,000 AV (probably behind level 7 forts).

Japanese ship losses as below. No point in posting Allied losses as it seems completely wrong.

Estimated Allied losses:

CV Wasp, 1 or 2 CA, 2 CL, 2 DD, 1 or 2 AM, 1 ACM, 6-8 xAK or AK.
