The HQ Support worked and the odds are down to 3:2 +3 on the Blitzkrieg table...

...its a 7 (10). The defenders are shattered (no conversion). Not a disaster, but these attacks need to be better.

...its only a 4(5) which is enough to destroy the Dutch Territorial defender.

In China, Mao's forces cross into Manchuria and grab the resource hex. The Japanese are in a bit of a mess in the north...

The Nationalist Chinese, with nothing better to do, go for a kamikaze attack at 1:2 against the Japanese in Kweiyang. Any sort of loss inflicted on the Japanese will help..

...sadly, they throw a 3 and lose two units.

The weather is behaving as you would expect in winter and that brings fighting on the Eastern Front to an end. The only attack this turn is the Japanese against the Partisan in Malaya.

I am going to attack with the Japanese next turn - at least get the US into the game otherwise I am learning nothing about the Pacific War.

The Japanese launch two attacks - on the Burma-India border and on Singapore.

In Singapore, HQ Support works and the odds are raised to 3:1 no modifier on the Assault table...

...its pretty unbelievable - its another 3. Fortunately as there is only one defender - the 2nd Australian Infantry Corps - the fortress falls for the loss of one SNLF Division. The Beaufighter is destroyed with it.

..and the Japanese roll a 2!! They lose an Infantry Corps an the Indian Infantry survives.

Why was there only one defender at Singapore? Perfect place for a militia or garrison as a second defender. [:(]


I notice that you build to few second line units with most countries. They are perfect for guarding against invasions. Defend against breakthroughs. Garrison places where you can't afford regular troops. When you need units to throw at the enemy to slow him down. They are also nice to have as losses when attacking. And lastly with enough militia build you should not have any partisans appearing behind your lines. All in all you can't have to much of these useful units that in the end could make a difference just by guarding one hex the entire war.

Edit: Such a nice unit as the 2nd Aus Infantry Corps deserved some help with the defence. So that a single loss would not wipe them out.

Its all part of the learning process for me. This is a huge game and there is just so much to do. While most major powers have a lot to do, for the Japanese - and especially the CW - they have the added problems of having to do much overseas.

Juggling the need for naval, land and combined actions and the limitations of each, adds to the problems.

The need to garrison territories - particularly India - against Partisans is a major issue, as is garrisoning those points - like Singapore, Rabaul, Trincomalee etc sufficiently.

The USA staying out of the war was not envisaged either - I had a 70% chance of declaring war a few turns ago!!

As for the Japanese, I am in all sorts of bother with a lack of HQ. I need to understand how I can manage China with so few HQ and yet still conquer the NEI, Malaya, Burma etc.

So I will continue to make mistakes (with both sides) but its the only way to learn right?

In order to try and bring the turn to an end only the CW do an action this turn. The plan is to put pressure on the Italians in North Africa.

For this purpose a small, select fleet under Admiral Somerville is sent to provide shore bombardment for an attack east of Tripoli.

Unfortunately I mis-judge the movement points available and the CW cannot get sufficient troops to engage the enemy...

With the weather as is, the Allied turn will be equally as brief.

The one exception is in North Africa where the CW are trying to separate Mussolini from his Roman Empire.

The RAF take a gamble with their newly arrived Wellington bomber and throw both this and a Blenheim into the mix. The Italians have a bomber automatically cleared through and have a C200 on hand to try and dish out some punishment to the British bomber crews...

7 (DA) The Wellington is aborted...
18! (DX PX) The Italian fighter is shot down and the pilot killed

After that bit of good fortune, things turn a tad sour - Balbo HQ support succeeds, but Wavell's fails, meaning the odds are 1:1 (no modifier) and the Italians choose the Assault table....

....a result of 4 means the CW lose a unit and are all disorganised.

The Japanese use their 4 points to increase the combat level.

Well that looked like a lot of fuss about nothing. The US lost one cruiser and a damaged carrier + a half dis-organised carrier and a disorganised cruiser..

That measly effort took pretty much the whole Japanese naval air arm...

Back to the Eastern Front and German attention centres largely on the north, although the hex southeast of Kursk gets their attention too. The Soviet air force is hopelessly outclassed and so stays on the ground.

On the southern shores of the Gulf of Finland the Luftwaffe is successful in disorganising one unit
