It'll take some time. I really would like to make this a challenging solitaire scenario. It's a good candidate for that, except the PO isn't keen on shifting units around the way the Germans did. But I need to better simulate the abatus the Germans laid in front of he Allied advance, which means moving those 'rearguard' units out of the line and into the areas where the Allies were free to roam.

I've also got to make some more mirror units so that we can simulate the German counterattacks. Currently, these units are getting evaporated and then don't reconsitute quickly enough to have any effect. The intended effect is that once the Allies breach one line in sufficient depth, the Germans reappear at another line farther back. Some of the results so far have been encouraging, but a little more work is needed.

If you are looking for something else in the meantime, I would suggest Goodwood. Its a fairly small and quick scenario, you can find it on my site. [;)]

I'm sorry. Tell me again how to find your site.

EDIT: Never mind, I found it. I downloaded GoodWood and I'll get started on it immediately if not sooner.

Here's a thread that has some scenario information, in addition to the scenario briefing :

OK. This is all we're going to post in this AAR for a while. Steve is making changes and I'll add the new playtest of the new changed version to the end of this AAR.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Sicily to Brenner Pass Revised (1/10/2014 5:13:56 PM)

It's 11:24 on Jan 10, 2014 and Steve Sill has just supplied me w/ an updated version of the StoBP scenario and I thought I'd playtest it
for him. He has switched from full-day to 1/2 week turns so there's no longer 667 turns in this scenario. I don't know how many turns
there are and I was planning on running the map anyway. Here's what the zoom out looks like. And it all starts at the bottom on the
island of Sicily.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Sicily to Brenner Pass Revised (1/10/2014 5:22:37 PM)

Here's the initial lineup on the island of Sicily. I was thinking of going north on the east edge and west on the south edge. I thought I'd
clear out a border around the edge of the island and leave the middle for later if at all. I'm hoping there's not all that many Axis units in
the middle to worry about. And Messina is my immediate goal because it's the one port off this island. I'd also like to capture all the air-
fields so I can park my planes on this island.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Sicily to Brenner Pass Revised (1/10/2014 6:17:37 PM)

Here's my moves. I tried to move inland to clear the beach of enemy hexes and enemy units, if any. I'm not running into a lot of
Germans. It's important to connect together the separate beaches and get a good LOC going. I got a good surround already on one
German unit. Working on another.

EDIT: I flew some of the shorter-range fighters north from Malta to the recently captured fields on Sicily. I'm planning on making some
airfield attacks on each of the German fighter units on Sicily just to see if I can drive them into reorg so they won't fly and then park some
arty w/in range and do some pounding of airframes. I love doing that.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Sicily to Brenner Pass Revised (1/10/2014 6:28:28 PM)

Here's the airfield attacks I have planned for T1:

larryfulkerson -> RE: Sicily to Brenner Pass Revised (1/10/2014 6:43:40 PM)

Here's the results of an airstrike on one of the German airfields on Sicily. Notice how the different percentages for each side ultimately
refer to the same number of downed planes for both sides? On the whole I'd rather be an Allied pilot right about now.

Here's the Axis aircraft losses:

larryfulkerson -> RE: Sicily to Brenner Pass Revised (1/10/2014 9:52:26 PM)

Here's the T2 positions. The Germans reacted to my landing on their beach finally and they are coming out of the woodwork like bugs.
They are all over the place. I'm going to need some more troops.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Sicily to Brenner Pass Revised (1/10/2014 10:03:19 PM)

And what's worse is that many of the aircraft are out on strike. Or down for maint. or the pilots came to work drunk or whatever the
reason lots of my planes are in reorg. Just at a time when I needed them too.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Sicily to Brenner Pass Revised (1/10/2014 10:09:36 PM)

I was moving some armored engineers just now and it got interdicted. So I opened the air war display to see how many planes are
shot down so far. Here's what the story is:

[image]local://upfiles/16287/32C525F05D54428EBC0B20C617F8BDA0.gif[/image]

larryfulkerson -> RE: Sicily to Brenner Pass Revised (1/10/2014 10:15:59 PM)

I had this brilliant idea to move the shorter-range ( range 65 ) planes to Sicily and the Germans moved some arty up to a sacrificial
position really, to pound my planes. I've got to get rid of him pronto before I don't have any planes left at the field.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Sicily to Brenner Pass Revised (1/10/2014 11:06:40 PM)

I thought I could enlarge the zoom out a little bit so we could see the entire battlefield clearly but clearly isn't what it is. I'll have to do a
separate post for each side I guess. Anyway this is the positions after I've moved everybody.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Sicily to Brenner Pass Revised (1/10/2014 11:12:03 PM)

Here's a zoom in of the above picture. I've backed up the front lines w/ what arty I had available and the HQ's are moved into range
and the planes are set on CS and AS and a couple of INT and I think I'm ready to pull the trigger.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Sicily to Brenner Pass Revised (1/11/2014 12:10:44 AM)

Here's the T3 front lines. All three squadrons at the nearest airfield to the German arty unit evaporated during German T2 D'oh. Live
and learn. I lost about 60 planes. That's gonna leave a mark.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Sicily to Brenner Pass Revised (1/11/2014 12:29:15 AM)

Here's a situation going on on the far West side. The needs of the service have the cooks, dishwashers, ditch diggers, etc. out to hold
a rifle on the front lines. Nobody else is handy right now.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Sicily to Brenner Pass Revised (1/11/2014 12:58:23 AM)

OK. I've moved some more units and the picture has changed. This is my moves on the far East side. I'm pressing north and wrapping
around the Axis units that constitute the resistance down south. The idea was to move north along the coast road and have some
other formation move north ( on the left flank of the first formation ) to cover each other and support each other. That plan is falling
apart. But rapid speed may be important in this thrust. I'd like to get to Messina ASAP to cut off the flow of Germans to Italy. Messina
is the only port on the entire island.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Sicily to Brenner Pass Revised (1/11/2014 6:41:52 AM)

It's T4 and the T5 expected reinforcements are on the other side of the island. Is that a bug?

larryfulkerson -> RE: Sicily to Brenner Pass Revised (1/11/2014 7:24:41 AM)

Here's my T4 moves. I'm trying to outflank all the Germans or at least cut them off from some of their supply if possible. I'm rapidly
spreading myself too thin on the ground. Don't try this at home.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Sicily to Brenner Pass Revised (1/11/2014 8:39:41 AM)

Here's T5's front lines. I'm just getting into more and more trouble. It's just getting worse and worse. I can't wait to see what
happens next turn.

The US 9th Inf Div landed at Palermo in August to reinforce the US 2nd Arm Div. You really can't reach there by turn 5, but you can get there earlier than August.

JeffroK -> RE: Sicily to Brenner Pass Revised (1/11/2014 8:22:31 PM)

Have you made sure you have synchronised the game speed (time scale) withe the map scale.

Otherwise you end with time flying by with half week turns but the game going at the same pace as the daily turns.

I would be glad to know the answer to that myself. I suppose that's part of the playtest, to see if it's syncronized.
I'm not sure how one can tell whether or not it is in such a state. I'm supposing that you could see what events
happened in history and whether or not something similar happens in the game. Other than that it would be
hard to tell.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Sicily to Brenner Pass Revised (1/11/2014 8:39:05 PM)

Here's the T6 front lines. I've even got a recon element headed to Palermo to activate the expected reinforcements. He may not get
there though. We'll see.

larryfulkerson -> RE: Sicily to Brenner Pass Revised (1/11/2014 9:33:42 PM)

Here's a close up of the West side in T7. I've succeeded in driving recon elements around the rear of the German positions and so I
have reason to believe that I've cut off the German units from their supply. That will make it easier to defeat them.

Here's a closeup of the east side in T7; I'm pressing north and I've got recon units out driving around converting hexes and clearing
the roads.

West side in T8: I'm mopping up in the middle and pressing west on the West side. I'm running out of Germans to kill.

Here's the East side in T8: I'm sneaking up on Messina. And notice that finally the left flank guard formations are moving north.
