Despite overwhelming losses...they kept coming.

Lowpe -> RE: Turnaround? Lowpe (J) vs Tiemanj (A) Stock (3/3/2014 1:12:16 AM)

But by the late afternoon...the KB was unscathed. Not a plane broke thru to make a bomb run on any ship...then, the carriers turn into the wind seeking payback...and find it. One large, coordinated strike! Sweeps found no fighters over Soerabaja and then the Vals and Kates made their runs...

And as the Sun sets over Java, the butcher's bill is counted...a great day!

SBD-3 replacement rates are not good...That is a painful day(unless he sinks some IJN CVs...which he did not do)....

Lokasenna -> RE: Turnaround? Lowpe (J) vs Tiemanj (A) Stock (3/3/2014 2:17:21 AM)

Well. That will takes his USN CVs out of action for several months. IIRC, SBD-3 replacement rates are 21....per month.

Lowpe -> RE: Turnaround? Lowpe (J) vs Tiemanj (A) Stock (3/3/2014 3:02:27 AM)

The question is will he keep trying to reinforce Java?

On another note, the sub war has gone very quiet. No allied attacks for several days. I think he is trying to catch a CV...

I am gradually getting the IJN subs into his convoy routes as evidenced by another successful attack near Karachi.

Shock attack at Manila. I thought I could get a 2-1, but fell short. I know I should send more troops here, but I just don't have any to spare right now and a victory here would aid the Java operation immensely. Oh well...

Lowpe -> RE: Turnaround? Lowpe (J) vs Tiemanj (A) Stock (3/3/2014 3:22:17 AM)

The dog put a fresh minefield up and caught two of my PBs on fast transport to Denpassar. Luckily, all the other ships that go there on the east side of the island.

Denpassar is turning into a good base with engineers, construction, AA, and paratroops holding it. The airport took a pounding, but seems to be forgotten with all the excitement around Soerabaja, Kali, and Xmas #10.

I am launching some low level ground attacks in southern Java and increased my recon there as the my troops are in position to attack. I just don't want to throw any troops away recklessly.

With those SBDs down, I feel I can go a head and attack in Southern Java with a lot less risk. Well, the area is crawling with Allied subs...

Another day, more dogfights over Java. During the morning phase his Wildcat Sweeps from the stratosphere get lots of Oscars allowing a few planes thru costing me three xaks hit and one destroyer lost. But large amounts of troops unload and precious supplies.

Can I take Batavia without a hideously long siege?

Lowpe -> RE: Turnaround? Lowpe (J) vs Tiemanj (A) Stock (3/3/2014 10:40:19 PM)

Turn is away and I pulled the trigger for the paratroop drop down south with plenty of sweeps and escorts and a few bombing runs thrown in. The KB is moving into a blocking position east of Soerabaja...she has following task forces on ASW and Surface Combat range 1 to keep her safe from subs or the Allied CAs in the area.

Given his success at Kali last turn, I anticipate heavy air attacks there this turn, and have beefed up the fighters in the area and set some of them high. Deliberate attack at Xmas Island to see what is there...I don't think much.

So, should be an exciting turn...

Lowpe -> RE: Turnaround? Lowpe (J) vs Tiemanj (A) Stock (3/4/2014 3:54:07 AM)

Another fun filled day in Java. Heavy storms cancelled a lot of raids around Soerabaja, but the paratroops went in....and Malang is in the Empire for now. I anticipate a heavy response down here with his air force and I will try to dangle a few expendable ships out there near Malang while the heavy reinforcements gather for the following day while every fighter I have scrambles.

Heavy air battles in the north, and once again his planes penetrated my CAP sinking 3 xaks. Plenty of supply at Kali now, and almost 6 full divisions. Two more divisions on the way.

I have to figure out how to counter his two really good squadrons of F4Fs....they are getting 90% of the kills to my fighters. I have one squadron of Nicks at Palembang, perhaps they are part of the answer, perhaps CAP the Oscars even higher and avoid that nasty diving bonus. Maybe try to bombard their air bases...or send in the KB zeroes at high altitude sweeps (my best pilots).

The Butchers bill in the Air. My fighter losses are heavy, but I have a god awful amount of production. If I can trade one for one, he can't keep up I hope.

Nauru. There half a million resources here...maybe I will be able to get them.

Lowpe -> RE: Turnaround? Lowpe (J) vs Tiemanj (A) Stock (3/4/2014 4:44:14 PM)

August 10, 1942

Leomadjang has two air engineers present the 223 RAF Group and the 33rd Aviation Base with a combined AV of 2. It will be a real joy to take these guys as POWs and secure the level 3 air base for Zeroes.

South Java will get some troops this upcoming day via Fast Transport with destroyers, but the majority of the heavy troops won’t land for 1-3 more days. I am being aggressive with almost all my fighters around Soerabaja as I expect a big response here.

Sweeps over Soerabaja caught no fighters, as he rested his planes...

Meanwhile in the north, I hope there will be a small respite as he repositions down south. More elements of the 1st Tank Div and another Infantry Division are 1-2 days out unspotted.

I flew in two fresh fighter groups and have a sweeps set over his F4F base and have close to 200 bombers hitting that field. From my recon and battle results, I don’t think he can have much on CAP and the majority of my raids are coming from size 7 air bases with air HQs fighter escorts and sweeps. Sure to go wrong somewhere: weather, coordination, heavy CAP.

A little aggressive here…perhaps I should have stuck with the sweeps for now…having buyer’s remorse but the turn is away.

Lowpe -> RE: Turnaround? Lowpe (J) vs Tiemanj (A) Stock (3/5/2014 12:09:20 AM)

To my utter surprise the raids go in better than expected...

Lowpe -> RE: Turnaround? Lowpe (J) vs Tiemanj (A) Stock (3/5/2014 12:16:40 AM)

Fog of War at work...as the daily losses don't reflect the pilots debriefing. Probably plenty damaged though.

Fighter sweeps again turned up empty in Soerabaja. Perhaps I am grinding him down.

Airport raids in Rangoon and Port Blair ground his naval search allowing the 1st Division to steam past without being spotted.

Lowpe -> RE: Turnaround? Lowpe (J) vs Tiemanj (A) Stock (3/5/2014 12:34:19 AM)

Java, Aug 11, 1942.

Heavy plane strikes will be flown in southern Java. Soerabaja still has plenty of ships, and I am conflicted at whether I should strike the port or the air field. I am leaning towards the air field until I get supply into the newly captured air bases.

If the ships make a run for it, they will run into the KB and SAG. So the plan is to focus on Allied air power for now.

Meanwhile, in Manila the air raids are now destroying squads and not disabling them...a very positive sign.

Lokasenna -> RE: Turnaround? Lowpe (J) vs Tiemanj (A) Stock (3/5/2014 2:15:31 AM)

11 SBDs + 9 F4Fs on the ground is still a result I'd take any day of 1942 and 1943. Nice work!

Lowpe -> RE: Turnaround? Lowpe (J) vs Tiemanj (A) Stock (3/5/2014 2:44:25 AM)

Battleships are starting to get out and do some bombardment work. Here a group hits Port Blair effectively blinding his search in the area. Batavia will get hit with some really big guns soon....I am working on maintaining very high detection levels to maximize the damage. I plan on hitting his vulnerable beach airports on a regular basis once the mines are gone.

I have noticed that damage to Allied air bases tend to linger for quite a long time and if memory serves construction groups are relatively scarce at this point...

I am LR CAP some amphibious transports going into southern Java, hopefully my fighters have the range...otherwise the Allies might get some licks in.

Got a squadron of Emilys' operating out of northern Java now, and I actually set up search arcs for them....what a relief to have them up and searching.

Thanks....hopefully he is feeling the burn. I will probably need to commit the KBs soon...several juicy targets plus his carriers are somewhere.

The day dawns none to brightly upon the Empire as Yankee raiders appear...they somehow evade destroyer and light cruiser screens to get into the bay at Kursaie

While over in Java the Allies fly heavy fighter CAP over their damaged airbase (which I swept only) and launch several raids with SBDs at Oosthaven -- the home of the single largest concentration of Japanese anti aircraft units in the world.

My fighters did well defending the base and the AA was effective making this a costly strategy for the Allies this day.

And as the fighter sweeps, CAP, bombing runs continue at a hectic pace the KB slips between the islands and launches a very satisfying raid not upon a well defended air base but upon a shore bombardment task force. The Boise is last seen broken in half going down...

Java -- the big picture. A fair amount of this shipping is not spotted. I have managed to shoot down a fair amount of his search planes.

On other fronts:

Burma: Rangoon being bombed now daily. The 1st Division and support troops 1 day out of Ramree Island and not spotted. British and Commonwealth troops marching down from Akyab on the road. Got some Thai troops into Shwebo and boosted Rangoon's siege forces a little.

North Pacific: A base force and some marines are headed up north to further reinforce the Kurile Islands. Only Paramushio is garrisoned but the 5th SNLF is on the way as is the newly arrived 51st Base Force. Weak beyond words here. 9 Zeroes and 6 Mavis make up the air defenses.

Central Pacific: A Naval Guard unit will be fast transported into Ocean Island which now also sports a squadron of Rufes. First load of resources being shipped out of Nauru towards Truk.

Solomon Islands: This was part of my intelligence ploy aimed at Noumea probably a lot of wasted clicking. No Allied forces spotted and I am developing Guadalcanal, Tulagi and Shortlands. Doing this really only because it is there for the taking.

PI: Bombing Manila daily with close to 150-200 bombers. Pretty boring. Starting to ship resources out...

China: Tuyun, Paoshan and Pakhoi invested. Moving troops to siege Changsha to stop production. Waiting to get an Air HQ in theater to start bombing again. Slow, and boring, but important. Letting cut off Chinese units starve.

I must be the only player ever not to have Tojos in August of 42 with Realistic R&D off.[:@]

Well, they arrive by default on 6/1/42 or 7/1/42 depending on the model, so.... Why don't you? [:D]

Lowpe -> RE: Turnaround? Lowpe (J) vs Tiemanj (A) Stock (3/6/2014 8:06:53 PM)

In this game it is 9/42 for both the IIa and the KI-44. Not sure why.

Perhaps there is a penalty for realistic r&d off...
