Rainer -> WitP AE Full Screen Windows 8.1 (5/4/2014 2:20:01 PM)

Has anybody achieved to run WitP AE full screen (NOT window'ed) without map scrolling delays under Windows 8.1?
I have tried a multitude of switch combinations, and none worked.
Running AE window'ed everything is fine.
Full screen delay for mouse clicks is 5 or more seconds, map scroll happens extremely slowly.

Here are my switches (Nvidia):
"J:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition\Beta2\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -altFont -cpu2 -f -dd_def

Note: With XP full screen isn't a problem at all (same hardware).

gottagofish -> RE: WitP AE Full Screen Windows 8.1 (5/5/2014 2:25:33 AM)

I don't have 8.1, but have you looked at the scroll delay under options? At least I think there is such a thing. Sorry, just a SWAG.

Rainer -> RE: WitP AE Full Screen Windows 8.1 (5/5/2014 11:58:17 AM)

Thanks for the message.
You're right, there is such a switch (actually half a dozen) to control message delays as required.
Map Scroll Delay is set to 0 (Zero).
As I said, all is fine with XP. Only W8 poses the delay problem.

koniu -> RE: WitP AE Full Screen Windows 8.1 (5/5/2014 1:30:22 PM)

I have W8.1 and i use those switches.

-f -px1280 -py1024 -cpu4 -skipVideo -altFont -deepColor -dd_sw

For me it is smooth like it was under win 7.
I will give chance to -dd_sw switch.

Rainer -> RE: WitP AE Full Screen Windows 8.1 (5/5/2014 3:00:44 PM)

Thanks a lot koniu. This is it!

To be sure what the magic ingredient really is I tried the switch line by replacing my old parameters one by one.
And the winner is: -deepColor!
Only when the switch line contains that parameter the delays are gone.

My new switch line is now
-altFont -cpu2 -f -deepColor -dd_def
and it works.

That seems to confirm that the background of the issue is a DirectX incompatibility between XP and Windows8.

A big Thank You from Germany to Poland [:)]

tdpyle -> RE: WitP AE Full Screen Windows 8.1 (5/5/2014 3:36:41 PM)

The -deepColor switch is the answer. Just ran it full screen. On a computer with a fairly fast processor (2.9GHz), I actually had to slow down scrolling and messaging -- it was too fast! Many thanks to Rainer for finding the solution to this annoying problem.

Rainer -> RE: WitP AE Full Screen Windows 8.1 (5/5/2014 4:29:35 PM)

It was koniu who gave the decisive hint [&o]

jcjordan -> RE: WitP AE Full Screen Windows 8.1 (5/5/2014 11:07:03 PM)

I'll have to give this a try again. Mine was only working in -w mode vs fullscreen being slower than watching turtles race. My problem in -w mode was that the task bar would be over the game so when I would try to click on the lower part of the map or the small map to jump somewhere I'd sometimes be too far below & actually click out of the game.

jcjordan -> RE: WitP AE Full Screen Windows 8.1 (5/6/2014 2:11:33 AM)

Yep it's the -DeepColor switch. I removed the -w switch from my cmd line & it ran just fine like it did under Vista, which I had no switches in use there. My current is -deepColor -cpu2 -multiaudio -skipVideo

Maybe there should be a sticky for Win8 users as I'm sure this will only get more frequently asked w/ newer & newer Win versions until a WITPAE2 comes out [:'(]

Will there ever be a WITPAE 2 with updated UI/UX and better DirectX implementation?? Or you just torturing me :D I'd love this game to be modernised. Can think of a lot of improvements I'd like to see, but still enjoy playing it...

jcjordan -> RE: WitP AE Full Screen Windows 8.1 (5/7/2014 11:28:30 PM)

So far we're all being tortured w/ dreams of AE2. You'd seem to think someone would take the time to update it for more modern software since this game has been going so long & still has such a strong interest so sales would probably be pretty strong & worth the investment.

afspret -> RE: WitP AE Full Screen Windows 8.1 (5/8/2014 12:05:12 AM)

For almost a year I've been forced to play the game in Windows mode 'cause none of the previously recommended switches worked for me. Now, thanks to the switch change provided here by [&o]jcjordan[&o], I am able to play in full screen mode again! Yee Haw, happy days are here again![sm=Cool-049.gif]

I dont even know why i use -deepColor switch. I just have it since i play game in Vista and 7. If i only know that -deepColor is most important switch for Win 8 users.
Thanks to Rainer for testing and isolating solution.

EDIT. It will be nice if someone will make that topic sticky, it will help finding it fast

SuluSea -> RE: WitP AE Full Screen Windows 8.1 (5/24/2014 11:54:50 AM)

Definitely should be a sticky and it works.

I'm running Windows 8.1 as well/

I've been running in windowed mode to get good scroll times the damper has been how small the icons are to get the game to perform. Just yesterday I was shopping for a larger monitor than my 22 inch so I could see the icons better.

All is back to as I was running in Vista/ Thanks

mbar -> RE: WitP AE Full Screen Windows 8.1 (5/26/2014 11:19:47 AM)

Yes. Sticky the -deepColor solution. Thank you! Running WitP in windowed mode is not quite the answer I was looking for.

Ridinroun -> RE: WitP AE Full Screen Windows 8.1 (5/26/2014 8:04:15 PM)

I did the switches and I have fullscreen and it's blazing fast in Win 8.1. But I have a problem. I dock ships to load and they won't load. Have this problem at Pearl and Abadan. Everywhere else I loaded at there was no problem. This is using Beta. I used the recommended switches with the Main WitP and it was still painfully slow. Update. I docked ship at PH and set to load and then I chose my destination and switched control to CS and the ship loaded ok. Guess I can live with that.

Hello All,

I recently purchased WitP and would like to enjoy playing the game. Unfortunately I am having some of the very same problems as others listed on this board. I run a windows 8.1 machine. My current problems are:

1. My scroll speed is very clunky. Right clicking on the desktop shortcut icon, then properties, the target line has the following:
"C:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition\autorun.exe" -f -px1280 -py1024 -cpu4 -skipVideo -altFont -deepColor -dd_sw

2. Sometimes I will try to put up with the clunky scroll speed and about turn 3 or 4, the opening game window pops up. This is the window where you click "play" to start the game. When it pops up, the text becomes unreadable on the game screen and many of the game buttons turn into green blocks.

I have not been able to get farther than this so I do not know if I have other issues. Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Here are some samples of switch combinations that work well for me, some on Windows 7, some on Windows 8/8.1.
quote:

"C:\Matrix Games\WITP AE - PBM #1\Beta2\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -altFont -cpu4 -dd_sw -archive -wd -pxf1920 -pyf1018 -noFire

"C:\Matrix Games\WITP AE - PBM #2\Beta2\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -altFont -archive -wd -deepColor -px1366 -py768 -fixedArt -noFire

"C:\Matrix Games\WITP AE - PBM #1\Beta2\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -altFont -archive -wd -deepColor -px1366 -py768 -fixedArt -noFire -SingleCpuOrders -cpu3

Based on what you described you might try "-SingleCpuOrders"

cwhat -> RE: WitP AE Full Screen Windows 8.1 (6/13/2014 1:40:48 AM)

Hello WitPqs

I copied and pasted the singlecpu line into the target block on my windows shortcut and received a wrong path error. I am sure I am running the most recent update, however I am a pure computer user and do not know much about switches and things. Any help is greatly appreciated.

You are going to have to put on your best 'figure out the technical stuff' hat. I'll try and get you pointed in the right direction.

The 'path' refers to the folder (aka 'directory') that you specified. For example, in what I supplied above, I am using the Beta releases, which get installed in a 'Beta2' folder underneath the main folder the game is installed in. That might be one difference between your installation and mine (are you using a Beta release?). Another is that I have multiple installations. I have one called "War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition" which is the default that the game's installer uses. Chances are that is what you have, unless you specified something different when you installed the game. I also made copies of that to other installations so that I can use different maps and different Beta versions for different PBMs that I am playing with people. That is where you see things like "WITP AE - PBM #2". It is very unlikely that will match the folder name for your installation, because I made it up, and what are the chances that you made up the same thing??

So, making an educated guess, it sounds to me like you copied too much of what I posted. You should have copied only the "-SingleCpuOrders" part. I am guessing that you copied the whole line. If that is what you did, go back to the way it was and see if it works. Then add just the "-SingleCpuOrders" (without the quotation marks, of course), and see if that helps with responsiveness when you are entering orders.

I think this is where your problem starts. The switches should be used with a shortcut of the war in the pacific admirals edition.exe, not the autorun.exe file.

cwhat -> RE: WitP AE Full Screen Windows 8.1 (6/14/2014 5:29:42 PM)

Hello Again,

Problem 1 is semi-fixed. The scroll speed is faster and I can at least play the game. At first it was scroll - wait - wait - wait - wait - scroll. Now it is scroll - wait - scroll. This is what I have entered into the target line on the desktop shortcut:

"C:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition\autorun.exe" -altFont -archive -wd -deepColor -px1366 -py768 -fixedArt -noFire -SingleCpuOrders -cpu3

Problem 2 is still a pain. I double click on the desktop shortcut and start the game in the normal fashion. Then at some point during gameplay, the opening start-up screen pops up. When it pops up it causes the text turn green and unreadable.

Thanks for everyone's help.

Sardaukar -> RE: WitP AE Full Screen Windows 8.1 (6/14/2014 6:09:24 PM)

Try switch: -dd_sw

I suppose the problem is that these switches should be with the file "C:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" and not with "autorun.exe"

cwhat -> RE: WitP AE Full Screen Windows 8.1 (6/14/2014 11:19:55 PM)

This is what my target line has listed:

"C:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition\autorun.exe" -altFont -archive -wd -deepColor -px1366 -py768 -fixedArt -noFire -SingleCpuOrders -cpu3 -dd_sw

The scroll speed is still a bit of a problem. I am not sure how I should change the autorun command to something else. Ideas?

mikkey -> RE: WitP AE Full Screen Windows 8.1 (6/15/2014 3:14:06 PM)

cwhat, for applying switches you must select "War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe"
correct target line for you is:
"C:\Matrix Games\War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -altFont -archive -wd -deepColor -px1366 -py768 -fixedArt -noFire -SingleCpuOrders -cpu3 -dd_sw

You might as well stop being tortured, because there will not be an AE2. As I understand, development of AE in the first place depended largely on volunteer effort. There hasn't been an official update in over two years. I don't have access to Matrix Games' financial information, but I doubt that the game makes them any significant money. The market for this kind of hyper detailed game just isn't large enough.

Hi witpqs,

I noticed a couple of strange switches in your quote that I have not come across before, could you explain the use of the -pxf and -pyf switches;
and also the -noFire switch.

Cheers Les

The noFire switch is to disable the firing animations. That makes it easier on the graphics card, as with slow graphics processing the screen can jump during the combat replay. That makes it jump less.

The others are to use a specific resolution that is not one of the standard resolutions that your video adapter supports. In my case I am running windowed mode, and I want the game window to fit exactly into a specific portion of the screen. That way I can still see (and click on) the Windows task bar across the bottom of the screen.

cwhat -> RE: WitP AE Full Screen Windows 8.1 (6/15/2014 10:59:19 PM)

That did the trick. It works well now. I am in windows mode right now. Is their a way to make it full screen?
