Remove -wd from your switch line to make the game run full screen

Edit: This is for cwhat.

Hey guys, I know this is sorta unrelated to the threads topic, but I'm wondering if anyone can provide me a link to where I can download the latest beta patch that would allow this game to run on Windows 8.1, please and thanks in advance.

There is no specific patch for OS versions.

But does Patch 7 enable this game to work on Windows 8.1?

The game has always worked on Windows 8.1. Michael is telling you that no specific patch level is required for it to work on 8.1.

Oh alright, thank you for the reply, and sorry if this was a silly question.

offenseman -> RE: WitP AE Full Screen Windows 8.1 (10/10/2014 7:49:48 PM)

Hmmm. Not having any luck here. New laptop with 8.1 64 bit. Fairly high end graphics card and 4 core. I have tried many switch combinations and the best I come with is the game being a square with just over an inch margins on each side. I cannot get it to go to full screen or to adjust the window larger than it is.

I've tried -f -fd -w -wd switches as well as no switch of that type
Also tried no defined resolution which produced the same result above. using -px1900 or 1366 or 1600 made no difference. -py1080 failed even though the normal resolution of this system is 1920-1080.
Here is an example of what did work:
"C:\DBB-C\Beta2\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -py1356 -py768 -cpu5 -skipVideo -deepColor -dd_sw It worked the same as in my first paragraph and the same result came with: "C:\DBB-C\Beta2\War in the Pacific Admiral Edition.exe" -py1920 -py1024 -cpu5 -skipVideo -deepColor -dd_sw as well as adding -f to either list. Trying any of the series of switches used successfully by others in this thread have not worked.

Any ideas?

EHansen -> RE: WitP AE Full Screen Windows 8.1 (10/10/2014 7:57:43 PM)

Start with -f -px1920 -py1080 and see if you get a full screen. After that we can work on switches for better performance.

offenseman -> RE: WitP AE Full Screen Windows 8.1 (10/10/2014 8:18:14 PM)

Ok tried that switch line and got an error. "Error: Can't set screen mode"

EHansen -> RE: WitP AE Full Screen Windows 8.1 (10/10/2014 8:29:00 PM)

That is strange. Are you sure it is actually in 1920 x 1080 mode? Some laptops will default to using the integrated graphics instead of the video card.

offenseman -> RE: WitP AE Full Screen Windows 8.1 (10/10/2014 8:32:14 PM)

if I add -deepColor I get the original square game view but off center and with the bottom chopped off. Without it I get the error regardless what else I put in the string. If I change -py from 1080 to 1024 I go back to the original issue of perfect except for the being a relatively small square

offenseman -> RE: WitP AE Full Screen Windows 8.1 (10/10/2014 8:53:22 PM)

Looks like that may be the case but so far I am unable to figure out how to change that from the onboard Intel card to the GTX850 card.

EHansen -> RE: WitP AE Full Screen Windows 8.1 (10/10/2014 10:03:19 PM)

This is difficult to answer. Do you have the laptop plugged into 120V? I know if you are on battery, it will conserve power by using the integrated graphics. Other than that, there should be something in the bios or video card drivers to set it to always use the video card when plugged in to 120V. I just don't know where or how, I do not have a laptop.

offenseman -> RE: WitP AE Full Screen Windows 8.1 (10/10/2014 10:58:32 PM)

Yep, I've tried is on battery and plugged in. Some research sees to indicate that the two video cards are mean to work together and both should be enabled. But I do not really know. I don't know either and device manager is different in 8.1 than anything I've previously used,it does not have a classic view as Vista did either... I'll keep plugging away and maybe find the answer by accident or someone will come along who knows what is up. Thanks for your help though. [:)] I thought we were on the right track.

Theages -> RE: WitP AE Full Screen Windows 8.1 (10/11/2014 6:12:19 PM)

What is the native screen resolution for the laptop? The switches have to be set to this resolution.
Some laptops have sliders oder switches to change the used GPU. E.g. Sony laptops have a slider for "stamina" and "speed". The latter "activates" the faster GPU.

offenseman -> RE: WitP AE Full Screen Windows 8.1 (10/11/2014 8:44:07 PM)

1920x1080 That is what it is set at and was from the factory. I set the switches to that resolution but it did not work.

MrKane -> RE: WitP AE Full Screen Windows 8.1 (10/12/2014 7:24:26 PM)

I would suggest check for newer Video Card drivers. Issue can be produced by bug in driver and usually the one on laptop with laptop is very old.

offenseman -> RE: WitP AE Full Screen Windows 8.1 (10/12/2014 8:04:54 PM)

Unfortunately that was the first thing I tried.

Alfred -> RE: WitP AE Full Screen Windows 8.1 (10/16/2014 7:57:52 AM)

Assuming there are no typos in post #38, then you are most definitely not using the switches, and hence why when you did not attempt to use a switch you got the same result anyway.

You need to have a px switch and a py switch.  Not two py switches.

Alfred

offenseman -> RE: WitP AE Full Screen Windows 8.1 (10/16/2014 1:15:29 PM)

Two py switches in the post were typos. As used I used one px and one py. So far I have used ~50 iterations of different switch combinations, non of which have worked.

Reg -> RE: WitP AE Full Screen Windows 8.1 (10/18/2014 4:19:46 AM)

I've just been playing around with my switches on a Win8.1 laptop with external monitor connected.

First -deepColor IS REQUIRED if you have your desktop set to 32bit colour or you will get the "Error: Can't set screen mode" message reported above.

Secondly WITP will only run (and be updated) on your main display. This can be a pain on a laptop as the external monitor is generally larger. However Win8.1 (I've never noticed it on earlier editions) allows you to set the external monitor as the main display and WITP will run happily on the larger monitor. (Right click on the desktop, select "Screen Resolution", select external display and tick "Make this my main display").

offenseman -> RE: WitP AE Full Screen Windows 8.1 (10/18/2014 1:32:29 PM)

Yes, deepColor is needed to avoid that error on 32bit color setting. I'll experiment with the external monitor a bit. I tried it without setting the external to main. Unfortunately for me, I do not have a chance to sit at my desk but once a month or so so using my desktop computer monitor is not too useful. Perhaps others will find it is more so. For now, I will try playing with a less than optimal square view. Thanks for the input

Strike Eagle -> RE: WitP AE Full Screen Windows 8.1 (10/19/2014 3:11:56 PM)

How do you change switches?

Hello WitPqs

I copied and pasted the singlecpu line into the target block on my windows shortcut and received a wrong path error. I am sure I am running the most recent update, however I am a pure computer user and do not know much about switches and things. Any help is greatly appreciated.

CWhat

You are going to have to put on your best 'figure out the technical stuff' hat. I'll try and get you pointed in the right direction.

The 'path' refers to the folder (aka 'directory') that you specified. For example, in what I supplied above, I am using the Beta releases, which get installed in a 'Beta2' folder underneath the main folder the game is installed in. That might be one difference between your installation and mine (are you using a Beta release?). Another is that I have multiple installations. I have one called "War in the Pacific Admiral's Edition" which is the default that the game's installer uses. Chances are that is what you have, unless you specified something different when you installed the game. I also made copies of that to other installations so that I can use different maps and different Beta versions for different PBMs that I am playing with people. That is where you see things like "WITP AE - PBM #2". It is very unlikely that will match the folder name for your installation, because I made it up, and what are the chances that you made up the same thing??

So, making an educated guess, it sounds to me like you copied too much of what I posted. You should have copied only the "-SingleCpuOrders" part. I am guessing that you copied the whole line. If that is what you did, go back to the way it was and see if it works. Then add just the "-SingleCpuOrders" (without the quotation marks, of course), and see if that helps with responsiveness when you are entering orders.

I am also having difficulty running on win 8.1 Program ran fine on windows 7 before I upgraded. I've tried all of the program compatibly tricks in win 8.1. How do I set game up to run in a window.

These are the switches that I use. Obviously some of them you might not want. -deepColor seeme to be key, and then -SingleCpuOrders plus maybe -cpu(any cpu number) to get it to run speedily.

bobheer -> RE: WitP AE Full Screen Windows 8.1 (11/14/2014 12:06:40 AM)

I used -deepColor and it works great now. I was having trouble using "switches" but realized I had to apply them to the exe file and not the autorun file. Thanks a lot for the help!

jmolyson -> AE under Windows 8.1 (12/3/2014 10:54:59 PM)

Dear Gang:

Frankly I messed around with AE in Windows 8.1 and never got the performance I had in XP. So, I bought a fast little
Dell Optiplex running Windows XP and I am now a happy camper. This one's not connected to the Internet so
security is not an issue.[:)]

offenseman -> RE: AE under Windows 8.1 (12/3/2014 11:06:28 PM)

I got it working after a good amount of experimentation. On my system it is much better than my XP system ever was. So ones mileage may vary [8D]
