Variety - Sunday, August 24, 2014

Richard Attenborough, Oscar-Winning Director of 'Gandhi,' Dies at 90

Richard Attenborough, who was honored for his helming and production of the 1982 Oscar best picture "Gandhi" but was best known to American audiences for his role in Steven Spielberg's "Jurassic Park" and its first sequel as park creator John Hammond, died on Sunday, his son tells BBC News. He was 90.

The stocky British filmmaker was awarded a life peerage by Queen Elizabeth II in 1993 for his stage work and for his efforts behind and in front of the camera to promote British cinema ...

Here's another excellent English actor, Richard Attenborough

He was the best in "The Great Escape" & "The Sand Pebbles" but he died today at the age of 90.

Well, now he stands in the Pantheon. Unmoved.

geofflambert -> RE: Absolutley OT: Growing Up (8/25/2014 1:55:55 AM)

I think everyone should watch the original "Flight of the Phoenix" with James Stewart to see an astounding performance from Sir Attenborough.

geofflambert -> RE: Absolutley OT: Growing Up (8/25/2014 1:57:45 AM)

Oh, and remember, he's the brother of David Attenborough, the wonderful naturalist. Make that 'Sir David'.

geofflambert -> RE: Absolutley OT: Growing Up (8/25/2014 2:20:50 AM)

About "Flight of the Phoenix", it is extroardinary, and an ensemble delivery, but I think Sir Richard made that movie, more than mister Stewart. Take the time to watch it, you will not be disappointed.

I saw it when I was I kid. And yes, I agree Sir Richard was the better actor. BTW who is this in this video Geofflambert: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3EOB-pWQZNw

geofflambert -> RE: Absolutley OT: Growing Up (8/25/2014 2:27:37 AM)

As to "The Sand Pebbles", watch it for Mr. McQueen's work. He's a pretty good actor, I think.

Well I don't speak Spanish so I'm not sure what was going on there, I saw some dead guys wearing red tunics, but every one expects that. Those foetid corpses wearing yellow tunics, I don't know what to make of that, but you can't pin it on us gorns.

geofflambert -> RE: Absolutley OT: Growing Up (9/6/2014 3:04:07 AM)

I'm baaaack! First in reference to the aforementioned Star Trek youtube thingie, do you know what Scott Bakula's last name means if you replace the k with a c? Look it up.

Second, we have forgotten to give a certain TV series (admittedly a Canadian production) it's due. How many of you have seen the "Red Green Show"? To you no more need be said. For the rest of you, find those episodes and watch them. Much duck tape is involved, and yes, I mean duck tape. That's the original name for the stuff and the original mfg. still calls it that. Take that "Duck Dynasty"! You don't hold a candle to Red Green.

warspite1 -> RE: Absolutley OT: Growing Up (9/6/2014 3:41:47 AM)

Here's a blast from the past. These foreign productions always seemed to get shown (I think in the school holidays). I don't recall if I really liked any of them but they had memorable theme tunes. Hearing the music and seeing the opening titles really took me back to the early/mid-70's....

There's an American TV commercial for something called "Angie's List" (which is a referral device for homeowners needing any sort of contracting service) that features a dog called "Riley" which is allegedly a shelter dog adopted by a woman who needed "Angie's List" to help her with all the dog's needs. This is based on a true story, but for the commercial, instead of using a mutt (which the real Riley is) they substituted a Great Pyrenees. You would never find such a dog in a shelter nor would anyone allow you to adopt it. They go for a minimum (usually) of 1k $. In college my Fraternity had one of those, a male we named "Frosty". When outside and unsupervised, we kept her on a long chain, I'd say 15 - 20'. Other Frats let their mascots run loose and they would gather to harass Frosty. He was quite willing and eager to take on all of them at the same time and they knew they'd better not give him the chance. They stayed out of his range. If we'd let him run loose like that, the other Frats would have had dead mascots. For those not in the know, the animal in warspite's second posting "Belle and Sebastian" is a Great Pyrenees.

Now this is going way off topic (I guess). BP was found guilty of gross negligence in regards to the Gulf spill. I'd like to comment on their current ad campaign which was insufferable a long time ago but is still running. It appears when you watch it that they are laughing at all of us schmos. First they show a couple of workers measuring some orange plastic thingie with a tape measure as if they were fishermen who just hauled it in. Whatever that thingie is it was made to spec and no one ever holds a tape measure to it. But the "actors" in the commercial are looking like "this is ridiculous, I've never used a tapemeasure on the job!". Then we see a scene where one guy is opening a package and a lady (they're both wearing hard hats) takes a bottle from him and holds it up to the light as though she's making sure there's no turds floating in it. And smiling. Finally they give us a closeup of granny smiling while wearing their hard hat. "The stuff we do creates jobs all over America". Yeah, cleaning up your mess. "This is no coincedence, it shows our commitment to (screwing) America".

Let them go back to screwing Ireland.

Yes. That's mostly my response too. Sometimes it's best to politely nod and just keep walking. Although it's funny that I have to remind you Limey lot about the benefits of keeping a stiff upper lip and ignoring pedantic psychobabble when you hear it...

Quite, but that sort of nonsense get's my gander up, what? Why I ought to jolly well biff the blighter on the nose.

geofflambert -> RE: Absolutley OT: Growing Up (9/6/2014 4:48:05 AM)

warspite, you don't have to endure those commercials, we do. As for Chickenboy, that's also his response to everything else. [:'(] Now, if the stuff I said was not self evident to the people familiar with the material, I apologize.

warspite1

Well a stoopid cheesy commercial is one thing. Suggesting that BP is screwing America (and the Irish comment which I simply don't understand) is something else.

geofflambert -> RE: Absolutley OT: Growing Up (9/6/2014 4:50:58 AM)

And warspite, are you telling me I failed to get your goose up?

geofflambert -> RE: Absolutley OT: Growing Up (9/6/2014 4:52:40 AM)

Not only is BP screwing America, so is GE and many others I should not have to cite 'cause you know it as well as I do.

Well I think we'll have to agree to disagree on that total nonsense.

BTW, what was the Irish comment about?

geofflambert -> RE: Absolutley OT: Growing Up (9/6/2014 4:56:59 AM)

It's British Petroleum not Irish.

warspite1 -> RE: Absolutley OT: Growing Up (9/6/2014 5:01:18 AM)

I know what the company used to be called, I was wondering what the reference to "getting back to screwing Ireland" was all about.

geofflambert -> RE: Absolutley OT: Growing Up (9/6/2014 5:01:49 AM)

Do you realize how many billions of dollars in damage they caused to industries dependant on the Gulf of Mexico? People's lives have been ruined here and they treat it like it's a great big joke.

geofflambert -> RE: Absolutley OT: Growing Up (9/6/2014 5:03:17 AM)

The Irish thing was flippant, I can't defend it really.

So the Irish comment was intended as it came across? In which case you are 100% correct - you cannot defend that comment at all.

warspite1 -> RE: Absolutley OT: Growing Up (9/6/2014 5:15:08 AM)

Why don't we get back to memories of childhood and leave the bitching for somewhere else?

geofflambert -> RE: Absolutley OT: Growing Up (9/6/2014 5:15:42 AM)

I apologize especially to all the victims of that spill because I made unsupportable arguments (albeit mixed in with supportable ones). Better voices than mine should be heard.

You apparently are unfamiliar with boards of directors of major corporations.
