That attack is going to have to come in at the choke point created by those bodies of water. That won't be easy.

Good Hunting.

Yeah....I always assumed the Soviets would just block off West Berlin with a ton of Cat B & C units rather than assault it.

Just remember that West Berlin was surrounded on all sides..[:)]

Reading about Zentrum, it seems, imo, that West Berlin was more important to the East Germans than the Russians. It's probably why it was an East German-led operation with the majority of units being East German border guards and "Combat Groups of the Working Class". The only "front-line" units involved were the 1st NVA MR Division and the Soviet 6th Independent MR Brigade.

Plodder -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (8/26/2014 12:28:08 PM)

Made some good progress today, got the road net and wall done, and managed to get most of Spandau done.

Mad Russian -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (8/26/2014 1:18:47 PM)

You may want to cut out some of the minor roads. The AI may have a pathing issue with all those roads. If every hex becomes a road hex then you may not get the AI to cooperate.

Just something to keep in the back of your mind.

Good Hunting.

Plodder -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (8/26/2014 1:33:45 PM)

Most of those roads in are in urban terrain and are mainly for me use as boundaries for the urban terrain tiles. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't urban terrain automatically considered road anyway so it shouldn't matter?

MikeGER -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (8/26/2014 2:19:22 PM)

Plodder, if i undertand map making corrcet the final map (after the autoscan and adjusting values by hand) is just a 'picture'.
so maybe you like, when the map is done, to replace two very special hexes in Berlin with two sepcial handcrafted city hexes in your artistic style

1. would be the Reichstag Building
(it tried to get something close to your art-style by working with an aerial shot and color reduction to 4, then Paint ...but my skills are minor.
but you get the idea...mine has way to much detail ...and it should fit your city-hex-style and no stick out.. its more like an 'easter egg'
my 'concept example' is 82 x 105 pixel, because i saw the RS-City1.png overlay was 82p)

[image]local://upfiles/37433/F466FA4FF2EF439799DDEF22E02F6657.jpg[/image]

2. would be the "Brandenburger Tor"

MikeGER -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (8/26/2014 3:53:55 PM)

...update [;)]

after some recherche i found out that in the scale of the game with 500m and 64 pixel a hex both famopus buildings are in the same hex.
(so i took a google map picture of 500 x 500m of the area, shrinked it to 64 x 64 pixel, and copy and pasted 'Plodder-Art'-stencils over the right places until it fits)

here is the 64 x 64 pixel hex of Reichstag and Brandenburger Tor in games scale: to paste onto the map
(well, may need some finetune on single-pixel level)

Mad Russian -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (8/26/2014 5:20:54 PM)

ROFL!!! So, now we start to get historically accurate city maps by actual building and street layout.

You guys are finally getting some kind of an idea just how versatile this program is.

Good Hunting.

Plodder -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (8/27/2014 10:43:50 AM)

MikeGER, that's pretty cool,You'll be pleased to know I'm planning to give the landmarks justice.[:)] In the screenie below you'll see the Spandau Citadel. I'm slowly making my way east, pretty happy with the progress so far. I'm finding that I'm also tweaking water shorelines as I go when I find it doesn't feel right.

That's a tremendous example of what can be done with the maps.

Speechless. Really. Awesome falls short on this map.

+1

You guys should thing about hiring The Plodder for the sub-project 'artistic'-map-design part of the Southern game.[:D]

because he is the one, who picks up exactly where the vanilla game maps stop.
He magically add a third dimension to landscape and objects in a natural way, which is mandatory for quick evaluation of tactical situation,
but without overloading it, or moving away to a different 'art direction'-style to far from Mad Russians vanilla art directing decision and nice color scheme
And so its a crossover, which keeps the 'boardgame hexagon map - heritage and charm' of the vanilla and somehow adds 'a tabletop-feeling' to it, without moving to far into 'realistic map download from a GIS'

I made a (non statistical relevant [;)]) test and played 'Time to Dance' on 3 different maps, ..and had the best result (and the Flow [:)]) on Plodder's map
I cant explain it 'scientifical'? ...its the 3D-terrain, the city vs. suburbs, vs. field vs. wood hex art that somehow have let me pick the right spots for the right units with quick intuitive gut-decisions (no LOS or Map values checks or even TOT calcs and waypoint time adjustments n'such - just play!)

The Berlin map will be a blast [&o]

Phoenix100 -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (8/27/2014 5:02:29 PM)

+1 there Mike. But all the same superlatives should be applied to William's work too, I think. I think OTS would need to hire them both!!! This berlin map looks astounding (even though I hate that I can still see the hexes and wish The Plodder would leave them out!). So does William's NTC map (in another thread), though they are different approaches. The NTC map achieves a highly realistic feel, I think. Love them both. Major improvements on the vanilla graphics. Thanks The Plodder. Fantastic work.

MikeGER -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (8/27/2014 6:54:20 PM)

Yes, Wlliam too [:)]

his NTC map is outstanding too [&o]
...a different approach, a different 'game-feeling' ...a military hard boiled one[8D]

but i would like to see how a 'German map' would look like in that "NTC-satmap style"
i fear that only works well in a desert landscape with not so much features
and i have to admit, even so i am used to height-lines and using topographic maps in 1:25000 i need longer 'to read' the terrain

harry_vdk -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (8/27/2014 7:06:16 PM)

This style of maps plays very good and this map is a peace of art.

I second that!!!

It's certainly true that Plodder's maps are a work of art, all of them, and VERY easy to read.

WildCatNL -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (8/27/2014 9:58:48 PM)

Hi Plodder,

are you considering adding the railroads (as decorative element)? I know it's a pet peeve of mine, but it adds character and an easily recognized element to the map.
The main rail road runs through in Eastern/Western direction through Spandau and along the Spree after crossing the Havel, as you are well aware.

For reference, my Braunschweig map features rail roads.

Good luck completing the map. And, with 2.03-2.05 use 193,193,193 as color for the roads so the Map Values scanner sees them (192, 192, 192 doesn't work).

Mad Russian -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (8/27/2014 10:24:34 PM)

The problem is the time it takes them to hand create one of those maps. They are great one map at a time. Not so great when you need more than 10 and you need them by the end of next month. That's the biggest drawback to getting a graphics person at the moment. Their amount of free time to work on the maps.

And the extra cost to you gamers, which you've said you are willing to pay.

Good Hunting.

I have thought about it but I think the map is going to be visually busy enough as it is with landmarks etc. I'll have a look again when I'm near completion.

Thanks. [:)] When I tried the test map, it seemed to work fine for me. I had to save the map and reload first but the road net popped up nicely.

Plodder -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (8/28/2014 4:20:57 PM)

Back to work today so didn't get a huge amount done. It'll probably be small amounts done each day as I'm working for the next 6 days..

Plodder -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (8/31/2014 1:23:47 PM)

I had to re-jig some of the water hexsides after I worked out there were a few hexside obstacle ID conflicts.I also managed to get the Westend and the Olympic park areas done.

Close up of the new areas. The little cluster of buildings just north-west of the Olympic park is the city fighting training area and firing range:

Bugger, my laptop has just died.[:@] Might be a while until I can carry on. Here's hoping it's not the hard drive and the data is ok.

CapnDarwin -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (8/31/2014 9:47:07 PM)

I hope the data is all safe. Backups. Lots of backups. Good luck!

Plodder -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (8/31/2014 9:57:26 PM)

I think the hard drive is ok. The the laptop will power up but all I get is a black screen. From some googling around, I think it might be the gpu has given up the ghost.

Plodder -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (9/1/2014 12:03:13 AM)

Looks like I'm back in action.[:)]For how long, I don't know. The issue is the battery. I tried a solution where you leave it on for a while and then power it off then on. Seemed to do the trick.

Plodder -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (9/2/2014 11:26:47 AM)

I've been making some good progress, almost everything west of the autobahn is done.Just have to do the area north of Tegel airport

Looking really good. Glad to see you are up and running again.

MikeGER -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (9/2/2014 12:05:28 PM)

this looks very promising [:)]

...i hope you have short pulsed back-ups of progress and maybe also a spare battery mailorderd, when the one in use dies on you suddenly after giving those 'spooky early warning' signs lately
