And with a good piece of timing someone has just posted an AAR of a Berlin'85 refight over at Comsimworld:

Thanks for the link, that thread had some great little nuggets regarding the quality of the allied and BePo forces.

Plodder -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (9/24/2014 3:49:20 PM)

I've reached another milestone by hitting the bottom of the map. It's fairly slow going at the moment due getting the mixed terrain types right but it's worth it as it gives each district their character.

Looking good! [&o]

DoubleDeuce -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (9/24/2014 6:59:16 PM)

Man, that's some serious effort right there. ;-)

wodin -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (9/24/2014 7:22:38 PM)

Interesting to see how LOS\LOF plays out within the city. It should all be close combat in their and no shooting across two or more hexes.

mllange -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (9/24/2014 7:54:08 PM)

Beautiful work!

Plodder -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (9/26/2014 3:59:14 PM)

I'm really beginning to dislike the American Sector, the mixed urban types in the area are a real pain to get right. [:D]

Plodder -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (9/26/2014 4:15:00 PM)

To give you an idea on how accurate I'm trying to make the map, here's the complete north west corner of the map:

Plodder -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (9/26/2014 4:16:20 PM)

..and the corresponding area in Google Earth:

Plodder -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (9/27/2014 11:23:56 AM)

....and done.Well, almost. To use a film-making analogy, principal photography is done. Now it's clean up time. I still have to clear the urban areas for the railway lines in the west of the map as I didn't add them until later. I'm also going to go over Tegel airport again and add more tarmac etc. to get it up to Templehof standards. Then it's seat each layer in it's proper place, add shading and map labels. I'll probably get it ready for the map values editor before adding the labels as I still have to work out fonts, sizes and level of detail. Still got lots to do, but it's great not seeing any blank areas. [:)]

CapnDarwin -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (9/27/2014 1:11:51 PM)

It's a great looking map. Glad to see you are in the home stretch.

MikeGER -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (9/27/2014 5:21:14 PM)

Plodder your map is sooo detailed [&o] ..that it almost need no labels if players had studied a Berlin city map for some longer time

maybe you release two versions:
- one the map with all bells n whistle as planed
- and a second one with just the pure landcape (no text on it at all)

Plodder -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (9/28/2014 1:34:50 PM)

Just the labels to do. Now I get chop it up for the values editor. This is a half-size view, notice the 1km grid, I'll release a version with hexes as well.

nice job Plodder

Plodder -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (9/29/2014 1:45:35 AM)

All ready for the map values editor:

Mad Russian -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (9/29/2014 2:31:59 PM)

And to think, putting that kind of detail in a map just took about 6 weeks.

Good Hunting.

Plodder -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (9/29/2014 3:19:02 PM)

Is that all? Feels longer[:D]

Mad Russian -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (9/30/2014 10:34:29 PM)

What that means, at that pace, is you could make about 8 maps per year. That's exactly why we didn't make those kind of maps for the release of the game.

Good Hunting.

MR

Plodder -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (9/30/2014 10:51:25 PM)

The only reason I went into so much detail with this map is it is mostly urban terrain and it's such an iconic city in regards to the Cold War that it deserves special treatment. It would have been quite easy to slap generic urban terrain on it and be done in a couple of days.

CapnDarwin -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (9/30/2014 11:54:58 PM)

Plodder, I am dealing with a family emergency, but I did pass on to Rob the problems with the map values editor. One thing you can do to help yourself out is to replace the hex fields and trees with ones that have a hole in the middle to let the scanner see what is there. You will also want to set the edge buffer setting down to 1 or 2 as well. That will help with some of 99s.

Plodder -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (10/1/2014 12:57:09 AM)

No probs thanks. I like the hole in the middle idea, thanks! It's not the fields or forests that were the problem though, the problem was the editor not recognizing lakes or roads. I had the edge buffer set to 2 iirc.

CapnDarwin -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (10/1/2014 1:40:05 AM)

We are fixing the roads issue and a couple others.

maps can be put together artistically quite quickly, once a template is in place,
data entry for the hex values would be tedious, though

Very true. If we could select our own rgb values for the map editor that could possibly make it easier.

Plodder -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (10/1/2014 7:23:24 AM)

A quick test of the custom data file. US and British tanks defending Gatow airport.

Amazing work.[&o]

CapnDarwin -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (10/1/2014 12:45:19 PM)

Loving the badge and the counters. How did you get the flags on the counters to work? The game currently saves only one background name.

Plodder -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (10/1/2014 2:34:19 PM)

I'm just placing the flag onto the vehicle silhouettes bmps, renaming them and then linking to the renamed pics in the data file. So you'll see little flags in the SUI and Force Roster. I'm using the US data for the national characteristics as it was going to be the US commander in charge of the Allies.

Plodder -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (10/1/2014 2:36:24 PM)

At the moment, I'm trying to work out the TOE for the US inf battalions as they were unusual in being a mix of leg and mech.

WildCatNL -> RE: New map WIP - West Berlin, British Sector (10/1/2014 10:35:19 PM)

Plodder, roads are only recognized as #c1c1c1 in 2.05, not as #c0c0c0. You might have to save the map first before the "Road" tags appear.
For lakes and version 2.05, use color #2e00de, not color #2d00dd.

Regards,

William
