The air to air combat seems already finished: the Japanese advantage is huge.
More and better fighters, more and better bombers...

yvesp -> RE: Global War : a Japanese AAR (8/15/2015 11:55:48 AM)

However, things never go as expected!
The first two air rounds are dramatic for the Japanese, who lose their best fighter.

As a result, the air to air combat ends up with 4 US planes shot down and 3 Japanese planes shot down.

yvesp -> RE: Global War : a Japanese AAR (8/15/2015 11:57:16 AM)

The US AA is pathetic, and most bombers get through.

yvesp -> RE: Global War : a Japanese AAR (8/15/2015 12:00:11 PM)

However, the Japanese do hardly better. However, only two US bombers find their targets. The Japanese do a lot better!

yvesp -> RE: Global War : a Japanese AAR (8/15/2015 12:01:58 PM)

The US lose two carriers and a cruiser. But is that sufficient ?

yvesp -> RE: Global War : a Japanese AAR (8/15/2015 12:07:04 PM)

And when we see that the Japanese lose one of their own carrier, and not the worst, one has really to wonder if that really is a victory. Well, yes, it is. But how will that change the course of events ? The US are not even bleeding for the loss of two escort carriers!

yvesp -> RE: Global War : a Japanese AAR (8/15/2015 12:33:08 PM)

Ah!!!

New bug... It has been a long time...

The game just cannot find a US port to return to base.
That's so difficult! There is Port Arthur, one sea zone away...
And this locks me in an infinite loop. I'm supposed to be able to cancel the move by using Esc, or destroying the units by using Back; none works!

Ugh... tired with hitting bug after bug 2 years after the game release.

And because there is no automatic save from the naval combat beginning, I have to redo the whole thing!
After I finish this game, I think I'll wait another year before playing again...

yvesp -> RE: Global War : a Japanese AAR (8/15/2015 1:27:20 PM)

Going from bad to worse.

Replaying the naval combat, the game got stuck somewhere.

Due to the inappropriate choice of too many modal windows which impose their presence in front of any other window, I could not even reach the task explorer to kill the game: I had to reboot my computer. It is a problem that I had met before, but at that time I had more space and two screens, and could run around the stucking windows.

I'll do on more try, then if it fails, I'll just skip the whole combat as if it never had existed.

yvesp -> RE: Global War : a Japanese AAR (8/15/2015 2:19:00 PM)

Passed all the time since last post to replay the naval combat.
Had to finally kill the game again: I fell into the same infinite loop.

I have now understood why the game doesn't find any place to retreat: I erroneously selected the short range subs, and the whole cannot abort in the same port. Anyway, the interface should come back to the retreat panel (with an option to destroy some ships) rather than loop endlessly!

A lot of time is also lost for no reason: for exemple, when a carrier plane aborts, it takes more than 30s for it to land on its ship! This has no explanations whatsoever: there is not even any supply to check!

yvesp -> RE: Global War : a Japanese AAR (8/15/2015 6:58:39 PM)

[:D]

I thought there were subs.
But no.

Quitting on this naval combat!
I've spent more than 4h trying to do it, to no avail. [:-] The result is always the same.
And having nothing better to do, I counted the time pass: 140s just to pick up the naval units to return to base; 40s just to place the units in the chosen port. [>:][>:][>:][>:] All this while:
1) there are still units in the sea area (so no need to check supply)
2) there are units in the chosen port (again no need to check supply)

So, is that the time needed to compute the ports within return range ? [X(][X(] That would be even more ludicrous!
I just cannot fathom why on earth these simple moves take so long![sm=00000055.gif]

Anyway, giving up on that combat is likely more in favor of the Japanese than of the US. The planes loss is more significant than the carrier loss: for exemple, both the Japanese and the US have carriers waiting for a plane squadron (the US have at least 4 of them in St Francisco, each with rating 5...), and the Japanese lost almost as many planes as the US. Since they have less planes, the balance would tip in favor of the US. All hat for what ? The Japanese Coast holds no strategic value. The real Sea area to control is the North China Sea, but the Japanese naval forces cannot seriously reach it. It will have to rebase to Tokyo before. With again the strong risk of port attack.

I realize that saving the Japanese fleet by moving it to Ominato was a poor move; it placed it in a safer place than Tokyo, but also made it irrelevant to the real combat. The fact that both the USA and Commonwealth use supercombined and that they both can keep naval reserves prevents any serious Japanese interference. The invasions are done before they can react. All they could do is try and intercept the participating ships. The military result in such a case would be small, especially when the invasion are carried out by divs transported by one of the numerous cruiser. This is especially frustrating, having a still rather large navy and not beeing able to use it with effect!

As for cutting the allies supply, it would require a lot of luck, would put many ships in jeopardy, ready to be destroyed by the allies reactive forces, and in effect should not even be that effective: even if MWif doesn't implement it, supply should flow freely to Port Arthur by land! Cutting supply is the job of subs, but the whole Japanese sub fleet has been destroyed long ago...

yvesp -> RE: Global War : a Japanese AAR (8/16/2015 9:32:56 PM)

Except for that naval move, the axis has little to do; the whole Japanese army in China is OoS. Even if a convoy had been present in the North China sea, the weather would have ensured that this was the case. As a result, the imperial army is going to be surrounded by Chinese units in too many places.

yvesp -> RE: Global War : a Japanese AAR (8/16/2015 9:42:12 PM)

As expected, the USA launch a full attack on all ports containing Japanese ships in Japan. Ominato is a prime target since all ships did not sail. The Japanese send planes to protect the area, but lose a good fighter in the process.

yvesp -> RE: Global War : a Japanese AAR (8/16/2015 9:43:10 PM)

the AA is efficient and the US lose a good bomber.
However, the remaining bomber damages a carrier and cruiser.

As is the one in Niigata.

yvesp -> RE: Global War : a Japanese AAR (8/16/2015 9:49:42 PM)

But in the rain, the bombers just miss Tokyo.

yvesp -> RE: Global War : a Japanese AAR (8/17/2015 5:03:14 PM)

In Germany, despite the rain, the western allies decide to lend a hand to Russia, unable to commit enough air power against Germany's still strong air defense. 4 fighters of rating 7 or 8 are more than what Russia can reasonnably expect to handle.

The air to air ballet turns in favor of the allies.
Especially since the German planes have a difficult choice for landing: either land in the southerne pocket, where oil is plentiful, thanks to the 2 synth oil plants there. But then they are OoS. Or land north, be in supply but have no oil to reorganize... Then, the places to land south are few and far between... Of course, one could land south to reorg, then rebase north to be in supply...

yvesp -> RE: Global War : a Japanese AAR (8/17/2015 5:09:29 PM)

The result on Berlin is impressive.

[image]local://upfiles/30121/3C69E80A0C9846428B5F71B9E4F870C5.jpg[/image]

yvesp -> RE: Global War : a Japanese AAR (8/17/2015 5:12:07 PM)

And the result is also excellent in the sole hex connecting Berlin to any reinforcements: both corps are disorganized, which means that only a trickle of reinforcements can now come to the city. should it resist the initial attack. Of course, if the turn ends, reinforcements will appear in the city itself.

yvesp -> RE: Global War : a Japanese AAR (8/17/2015 5:20:07 PM)

In the east, the Chinese fail to strike Kunming, still held by a warlord loyal to the Japanese.

But two blackwidow squadron meet their contract on Manila: the British are eager to use to opportunity offered by good weather and don't want to delay the capture of the city more than absolutely necessary.

yvesp -> RE: Global War : a Japanese AAR (8/17/2015 7:12:47 PM)

As the Russians prepare their blow against Moscow, the German send most of their bombers in it's defense.
They are uopposed, the allies cannot intercept and the Russians have not had time to bring their few fighters closer.

yvesp -> RE: Global War : a Japanese AAR (8/17/2015 7:14:01 PM)

I did not count, but this air support likely saved the German capital.
For now.
The German lose a now useless mech, which would have no oil to be reorganized.
Losing the div was the other option, but even disorganized the div is useful: as a div, it makes a third unit in the stack, and the penalty for desorganization is less that the one for a disorganized corps.
It may be difficult to hold the city against another attack.

Kawalein has not the luck of Berlin; its fall stems the end of any serious Japanese control in the Pacific.

And the British bring in easily many reinforcements in the Philippines.
Now, the British hope for one more good weather impulse.

yvesp -> RE: Global War : a Japanese AAR (8/17/2015 7:26:48 PM)

In Europe, the German forces are split into harmless chunks. The only remaining fighting force is now holding on a chunk of territory north of Berlin. It is incapable of any offensive action.

yvesp -> RE: Global War : a Japanese AAR (8/17/2015 7:33:07 PM)

Thinks are different in China.
The imperial army is not threatened by the Chinese, except in being surrounded, which is fast coming.
The Russia, expeditionnary corps may soon reach China, and the Japanese units are not able to stand againts them.
And I forgot to invade near Shangaï... Oh well... Too many things to think about!

yvesp -> RE: Global War : a Japanese AAR (8/17/2015 8:57:15 PM)

The axis impulse is uneventful.

Only Japan does something, a combined, which succeeds in reopening supply to China.
Japan also moves back the remains of the fleet in Tokyo; better have it there than useless in Ominato.

But for waht purpose ? It would have to stay onpen until the next impulse to have a chance to pull out an orderly retreat for whatever that is worth, salvaging any unit to garrison some important place.
Germany hopes for an end of turn: Berlin is quite vulnerable now, even though only two allied stack can attack it: With but 16 in defense, 2 units, all disorganized, it could fall.

The turn doesn't end, but the weather turns awful again...

yvesp -> RE: Global War : a Japanese AAR (8/17/2015 9:29:03 PM)

The USA do a new round of port attacks on the remaining ships which could not move.
Japan pays the price of having been so undecided.
In Sapporo, a convoy is destroyed.

The air defense above Ominato turns sour against Japan.
