I'm aware of the convention. Blinding people is horrible, it's not just rhetoric.

Dysta -> RE: Naval and Defense News (10/20/2015 4:54:02 PM)

There are numerous amounts of methods to intentionally blind enemies, photonic is just a tip of an iceberg. Yet not all of them are strictly regulated, even pointing gun-attached lasers at citizen as a warning could possibly harm the eye too.

But we're strafing off the topic about Russian IR-killers. So I'm rather interested to see how it can pinpoint the incoming missiles' warhead sensor for jamming effect.

Triode -> RE: Naval and Defense News (10/20/2015 6:10:49 PM)

well if we look at characteristics of 5P-42-01 "Grach" (obviosly in export version):
[image]http://i.imgur.com/OimCKq2.jpg[/image]

few interesting things:
the number of emitters 4 (2) (depending on the available power of the ship)
spectral range 0,35-2,5 µm (UV, visual,IR regions of the spectrum)
Time of continuous work 3 hours
Power 2,4 (1,2) kW

Automatic targeting sources of danger by the target designation of integrated combat management system of the ship
integration of station with a video surveillance systems of the ship
the ability to supply the station with its own video channel

This is smallest station in this family, IR,visual and small part of UV ,so called "black light" or UV-A range

$1b+ per hull (MDE cost of $4.3b for 4 ships) vice $450m for an LCS.

Will be interesting to see what Future Frigate and related LCS backfits cost.

Laser dazzlers apparently employed in a few ships in the 1982 Falklands campaings, but not sure about it.

F-16V took its first flight today. I wonder if the U.S. would consider investing in a upgrade until they deem the F-35 ready in force.

[ADDED DB v443]

News about 11442M Nakimov upgrade and UKSK capabilities

From official website of procurement of "Sevmash" (contract ¹31502887567) on the agreement with JSC"KBSM" for the manufacture and supply of ten universal vertical launchers (UKSK) 3S-14-11442M for repair and modernization of heavy nuclear missile cruiser "Admiral Nakhimov" Project 11442M.
"Production will be carried out on the basis of a joint decision ¹235/1/1/8565 of 6 November 2014. "Modification UKSK 3S-14-22350 for ability to use complexes 3K-14, 9K, 3K55, 3K-22 on 11442M"

So , Nakhmov will recive complex 3K-22 with missile 3M-22 , in other words "Zirkon"
Why is that a big deal? Because Onyx was always been temporally solution. True goal for UKSK was always Zirkon ,and finally Zirkon is coming, what we known about ZIrkon:
~1300 km (2013 year info from Navy demands, what actually achived in tests we dont know)
~7-8 mach (from interview with general designer of Zirkon)
~ flying high like Kh-32

Also, as you can see UKSK on Nakhimov capable of using "Kalibr" missiles (3K-14), Onyx (3K55) and something called 9K
Also as you can see Nakhimov will use 3S-14-22350 version of UKSK, this means 22350 "Gorshkov" also can use "Zirkon" ?
Possibilities,possibilities...[:)]

Lassem is not alone.

http://news.ifeng.com/a/20151027/46013204_0.shtml (Chinese)

"Type 052D DDG Kunming monitored, followed and warned the US vessel. .."

Potential scenario: USS Lassem vs PLAN Kunming.

UPDATE: Not 052D as finally confirmed officially at post #317.

NakedWeasel -> RE: Naval and Defense News (10/27/2015 4:14:55 PM)

No. Because it will not stop there. The Lassen will not be the last US vessel that will sail into the area. China does not own the world. And if they want to see how the American people can and will react to provocation, they can always try to stop us.

That's exactly what Soviet Union did when provocation happens between two Diomedes.

-------------------

NEWS UPDATE:

It's confirmed that Chinese vessels watched and alarmed the Lassen was not 052D, but 052C and one extra 053H1.

That would be a slight disadvantage without all the dangerous stuffs from 052D, but still an assured missile trading event if sparks alight.

NakedWeasel -> RE: Naval and Defense News (10/27/2015 4:40:20 PM)

More than likely, there were at least one or more US Navy subs in the area as well. Sinking the lassen would be an open invitation to a massive TLAM strike on that island. The PLAN would be well advised to use it's destroyers to defend against cruise missiles and stealth bombers, rather than a single destroyer.

You forget it's a air-hot area in SCS, US air patrols is much more frequent than ships and subs. So it makes sense for AA destroyers watch over it.

Seems like the OTH will now be part of the surface warfare package. I think I read earlier that Australia was looking at adding a RF seeker to the JSM. If that could be added to the NSM, that could make it a nice passive missile with another seeker to increase pk.

Triode -> RE: Naval and Defense News (10/29/2015 9:06:37 AM)

About 3M-14 from representative of the General Staff of the Russian Navy, Rear Admiral Viktor Kochemazov:

"- Depending on the target, against which is used weapon: land or sea - depending on the route, taking into account the need to avoid obstacles on the ground, the whole shooting range of these missiles is less than 2,000 kilometers, - said the admiral."

Land or sea target? It seems 3M-14 radar , ARGS-14, while have only 20 km range makes 3M-14 anti ship capable , well ships also "radar contrasting targets" so not big surprise.

"Cruise missiles of this type are in service in Vietnam and India. However, the range of export version is limited to 300 kilometers."

So, Indian pr 11356 frigates and Vietnam pr 636.3 subs have export 3M-14E

Looks like they will get some major MLU refit. VLS refit is pretty much a given. But the Sunburns have also been removed. Wonder what will replace them.

For Sov-lovers, this is a brutal abuse to the iconic cold war destroyer.

But well, I hardly see Zumwalt as the icon of future naval warfare either.
