Hongjian -> RE: Naval and Defense News (10/29/2015 5:38:10 PM)

The Sovremennys served the PLAN quite well as fast cruisers, despite their obsolete steam-plant propulsion. There's much hull life in them, and I can imagine that these 8000 ton ships will get at least 2x32 GJB-5860-2006 VLS like the 052D, as well as two PJ-38s and become full-fledged capital ships to escort the carrier (for once, because they are amongs the fastest ships in PLAN service). AShM is a question, but people so far rumor that they will possibly be the first to receive the ship-launched YJ-12A AShM (the one with the booster-stage in the rear) in place of the Moskits, so that their supersonic anti-ship loadout will not be changed.

With 64 large caliber VLS capable of loading YJ-18A AShM and eight dedicated YJ-12A slanted launch containers, the Sovremennys would be the most powerful classes in the PLAN in terms of missile armament, after the future Type 055.

Broncepulido -> RE: Naval and Defense News (10/31/2015 7:59:48 AM)

China has deployed PLANAF J-11 fighters to Woody Island (Phu Lam Island to Vietnam), largest island of the Paracels in the East Vietnam Sea. No reaction yet from the Vietnamese government (looking for a Chinese link probably from www.81.cn, photo showing J-11 with air-to-air loadout (2xPL-8+2xPL-15) landing in Phu Lam).

Broncepulido -> RE: Naval and Defense News (10/31/2015 10:41:21 AM)

Perhaps a fake news report, same photo I saw but text says nothing about the deployement: http://www.81.cn/syjdt/2015-10/31/content_6747809_5.htm

Hongjian -> RE: Naval and Defense News (10/31/2015 9:56:17 PM)

Type 022 FACs have been deployed to Yongxing/Woody Island, though.

You can see the lighthouse in this aerial photo:

I'm sorry, a lighthouse is significant why?

It's proof of location, showing that the Type 22 is at Woody Island, and not some random other island

Ever solve the C3M issues? Last I heard they couldn't share data with the rest of the fleet. Not sure if this was fact or rumor but they tend to deploy with each other and other older units.

Thanks!

Triode -> RE: Naval and Defense News (11/1/2015 8:19:38 PM)

news from Russia

According to director of SRZ "Nerpa" Arkady Oganyan
http://www.redstar.ru/images/files/regions2015/1809_1/180915-na-s-z.pdf page 3 in russian

before the end of this year "Nerpa" transfer to Navy two nuclear subs , K-335 "Gepard"(pr.9711 mistakenly known as 971M) and B-336 "Pskov" (pr.945A)

also according to VPK magazine
http://vpk-news.ru/news/25314 in russian
and Russian MoD site
http://structure.mil.ru/structure/forces/navy/news/more.htm?id=12036524@egNews in russian

before the end of this year DVZ "Zvezda" transfer to Navy two nuclear subs , K-331 "Magadan" (pr 9710 aka Akula) and K-419 "Kuzbass"(pr971 aka Improved Akula)

what is interesting is modernization that submarines receive

As example, B-335 "Pskov" is first from pr.945/945A recive 945M upgrade ,sonar system MGK-540M "Kizhuch-945M" instead of MGK-540 "Skat-3",Kalibr-PL complex and UGST torpedoes

K-331 "Magadan" and K-419 "Kuzbass" recive 971M upgrade, sonar system MGK-540M "Kizhuch-971M" instead of MGK-540 "Skat-3", Kalibr and UGST torpedoes
both K-331 and K-419 now 971M ,but also there is difrences between them, K-331 built according to VAH-74 (Vibro-Accoustic Characteristics Demands-74) ,K-419 built by
VAH-80 (and FYI about diffrences in pr971 subs: K-157 "Vepr" built by VAH-80, have SAG -system of active suppression of noise in the range of 50-500 Hz ,and K-335"Gepard" built by VAH-80 ,have SAG and longer improved TASS)

So, even if they both now 971M ,Improved Akula still better than Akula [:)]

Info about upgrades from annual report of Taganrog Plant "Priboi"
http://disclosure.1prime.ru/Portal/GetDocument.aspx?emId=6154093944&docId=bd47e1d1ed2046d6808349d3e9cc21a4 p.23-32 in russian
state contract 31401544741 (DVZ "Zvezda" buying MGK-540M for K-331 "Magadan" )
http://www.my-tender.ru/#!/tenders223/31401544741 in russian

K-335 "Gepard" does not recive 971M upgrade , only new Kalibr-PL missiles and UGST torpedoes
"Gepard" already have improved MGK-540 (early version of MGK-540M), sometimes because of that called pr.971M, but project number for "Gepard" is 9711,
Upgrade 971M is atempt to make other 971 as good as "Gepard"

So before the end of this year we could see significant improvments in ranks of Russian Navy submarines [:)]

It is possible that 971M upgrade includes not only MGK-540M installation.

P.S. about differences between VAH-74 and VAH-80 for pr.971, from magazine "Sudostroenie"("Shipbuilding") №1, 1998:
"In June, it passed the technical review of the project in 1 CNII MoD(Navy shipbuilding). Since that time, most disagreements on the draft had been settled, the discussion went on a normal working order. However, 1 CNII MoD suddenly required to reduce the noise level specification for submarine more than doubled, proving it a large number of implemented projects and reserves laid down in terms of noise. Note has been formulated as an ultimatum, otherwise the project is not recommended for approval. Chief designer, discussed these requirements with the Krylov Shipbuilding Research Institute and other industry organizations, has agreed to accept them. The concession was a very serious, as the number of frequency requirements on noise were tightened by 8-10 dB."

Some minor modifications on the datalink has been done some years before. But this MLU is a major one that has been planned for at least a decade, according to the most reliable leakers.

So, it is suggested that the PLAN wasnt too happy with the Sovs. Which is also why they never took part in the counter-piracy patrols off Aden.

I would rather want a notional C919-based AWACS powered by the CJ-1000A (since the Leap-1X would probably be off-limits for a military plane). But this remains to be seen.

Good for range, not good for maintenance. CJ-1000A is aimed for civilian market, military applications will be unlikely because it isn't for rougher runway environment.

Not to forget Y-20 can also be converted to AWACS as well. If still insisted, an ASW version C919 installed with WS-20 engines is more likely than AWAC packages.

Narrow-body planes are better suited for AWACS due to being more fuel efficient since less drag than converted military transports.

I rather think the opposite though. See how E-3 and E-767 offer superior endurances as well, they are also bigger than A320, B737, and C919. The older B707 and B767 are still have their viable purposes for military surveillance.

5500KM range is better than KJ-500, but still unacceptably short. Adding extra fuel tanks will be limited to the narrow-body, and hardly to take off from short runway. Y-20 or the future Y-30 would be a very capable STOL transports to be candidate for AWAC as I see it.

Except this means the exact opposite. No joint declaration against China = Status Quo remains.

The joint declaration was designed by the US to shame China into the corner and criminalize China's claim over 80% of the SCS - and only China's claim alone, not the similiarily sized and equally excessive claims of the other claimants.

Now, with no joint declaration, everything goes back to business as usual, which means the dispute involving all parties including China continues to persist. So, at most, we will see some fishermen getting shot and coast guard ships ramming each other, but at least no South China Sea war where the US supports and joins the other claimants to forcibly evict China's island holdings in order to realize the de-jure criminalization of China's claims.
