Luganville - why go for a direct assault right now when there are plenty of bases surrounding it you could capture, build up, and bomb into submission?? Don't forget that the Invasion Bonus is over and unless those troops have at least 65 or better prep levels for Luganville, it would fail vs a decent defense. Isolate and then challenge the Allies to battle as its your best time to do so.

Sieges - Singapore should be your first priority, IMO. While the oil at Palembang is important, you want to minimize the damage to it when you capture the base.

Burma - As Japan, you should happy that the Allies want to fight in Clear terrain. Make him pay for this and if possible use your Tank Rgts to cut off his retreats into the jungle and eventual safety of India. Do you know what specific LCUs you are facing here??

Canton Island - What tactical or strategic reason would you do so?? Its a distraction to crushing Allies in Luganville and lower Solomons area, IMO.

EDIT:
SoPac - From Allied perspective, you need to capture down to and include New Calendonia. Only CV and B-17 from Suva can reach these bases for some time. Baker and Canton don't do this for ya. Take the bases south of Luganville, build them up, and start to prep troops for actual conquest of Luganville and Noumea.

EDIT 2:
Climb Rate - don't overlook this for fighters you want to use as CAP. That is why the Jack is a good plane.

Thanks, that gives me something to think about. Feeling a little directionless at the moment.
I have about 240AV (4x60) units prep for Luganville, not enough for what I saw in recon.
I didn't think about taking smaller islands other than taking Lord Howe Island, using it as a base to bomb Australia and cause general havoc.

I have some AV and Eng packed and can get there in about 4-5 days, enough time to pull KB and the Children around and refeul. AKEs were heading toward Nauru Island to support actions toward Canton Island. They also can route South to support some Bombardment runs and goad the Allies into a fight.

I will think hard about this (supply and fuel - need to plan for that too).

Thanks again

I think I will be setting some kind of record for lenght of time it takes to capture Singers, Palembang and Manila. (sigh).
At least I will have a very low bar to shoot for in my next campaign.

In my game it may have been September of 42 before Manila fell, and November when Soerabaja surrendered.

Don't despair.[:)]

Yes but didn't that player quit?

I'm not going to give up without a good fight. Your story is a good inspiration, even in the dark times you are fighting against now -- that there are lessons to be learned in the best and worst of circumstances.

thanks

Wow, time flies...

When work, life, game turns and getting back to updating the AAR all add up to more than there are hours of the day, I get behind on these post.

Please don't give up on me. The advice and comments by all are given serious consideration.

The last update was about planning for the 9th of April.
Game turns have been coming regularly, at least 1 a day and over the weekends got in 2 per day.
Allied High Command HQ is located in a hidden bunker somewhere in Warsaw Poland, making the time difference between commands a significant impediment to multiple turns per day. That and the slow meticulous analysis of Japan High Command stressing to overcome the learning cliff this game presents to players.

I am now awaiting Allied Orders for 17 April turn.
I hope to catch up to with the action, including whatever happens on the 17th today.

thanks for reading...

April 9, 1942

I Must Be Winning the War
Wow, this message surprised me!
Long Island is occupied by the Japanese

uh, there is another Long Island?
Crap, and I was hoping all those 5th Columnist the Allied Propganda Rags (Faux News?) keep scaring the locals about actually materialized and did something...
oh well, back to the grind.

DEI Updates:
Dutch Air units show up as my forces isolate Soerabaja. Their straffing runs are fairly effective. I have to get more air units and support over there to intercept.

Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled

Lily's strike back:
Morning Air attack on Soerabaja , at 56,104

Weather in hex: Clear sky

Raid detected at 37 NM, estimated altitude 17,000 feet.
Estimated time to target is 11 minutes

Japanese aircraft
Ki-48-Ib Lily x 9

No Japanese losses

Runway hits 2
(this kind of action goes on for the next few days and I pull CarDiv2 - Kaga and 3 CVLs, into range to intercept these Dutch planes and destroy them)

Other DEI Notes of Interest
Bombing and Bombardments continue at Palembang. I do a couple of DAs between now and the 17th. Forts are reduced to 1.

Bandoeng is being bombed, bombarded and assaulted but they have a high level of forts making the coming attack on Batavia look to be a blood affair.

(I see a turn in my email - will return with a map and more info on DEI later)

Java Update Apr 9-17, 1942

The attached map is the situation on Apr 9. Not enough forces to push thru. Dutch Air units start flying again. I get CarDiv2 over to add LRCAP with a fairly large Oscar unit and start beating them down.

When do the Dutch get reinforcements?
I am sure it is soon...

I have some elements of the 1st Tank Div, bought out of Manchuria, unloading (on the 17th) in Semarang and the 4th Guards Inf Div a couple of days from offloading at the same port. That should give me enough to push one of these doors open.

Once Dutch air units started flying from Batavia again, I ran BatDiv2 into port (with friends to scatter and destroy the Tiny Fleet and bombard the airfields.
Somewhat counter-productive as I would like to have that Industry/etc being blown up there, but I can't wait forever to figure out another path.

Sumatra/Palembang Update Apr 9-17, 1942

I have been bombing Palembang with just one Sally Sentai for this period. Other demands - always a balancing act - on what is more important than somethinge else.

Still, Palembang has been isolated for many months with bombardments and they are wearing down.
Just this turn (17th) I did another DA. Here are the results:
Ground combat at Palembang (48,91)
Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 31973 troops, 419 guns, 316 vehicles, Assault Value = 814
Defending force 13236 troops, 172 guns, 71 vehicles, Assault Value = 369

Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 0 [sm=00000054.gif]
Japanese adjusted assault: 463
Allied adjusted defense: 976

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 2 (fort level 0)

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
931 casualties reported
Squads: 2 destroyed, 38 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 11 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 13 disabled
Guns lost 7 (1 destroyed, 6 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
532 casualties reported
Squads: 5 destroyed, 21 disabled
Non Combat: 2 destroyed, 27 disabled
Engineers: 1 destroyed, 9 disabled
Guns lost 16 (4 destroyed, 12 disabled)

The Brit 18th Inf still remains the backbone of defense here.

Further north, I have detatched a few units to scout out and take as much of Sumatra as possible.
I also tried to further isolate the Palembang force by leaving them one square of retreat (unoccupied by my armor/recon unit). Let's see if this experiment works....

Burma Update Apr 9-17, 1942

A lot of action here:
Starting on the 9th, my forces were besieging Meiktila.
Some heavy Allied air attacks on the 10th and 11th were unopposed.
I was moving AvSup to Magwe as the flight time from Chaing Mai to Meiktila would make LRCAP very fragmented.
Still I had to fly some units from Chiang Mai (Oscars) to join the Zero Sentai I sent to Magwe. By the 13th I was getting decent, not great numbers of fighters in the air over Meiktila.
Meanwhile on the 10th of April, the ground forces carried the decision and entered Meiktila:

Ground combat at Meiktila (58,47)
Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 34927 troops, 339 guns, 311 vehicles, Assault Value = 1198
Defending force 18314 troops, 95 guns, 143 vehicles, Assault Value = 603

Japanese adjusted assault: 430
Allied adjusted defense: 157

Japanese assault odds: 2 to 1 (fort level 0)
Japanese forces CAPTURE Meiktila !!! [sm=00000028.gif] Banzai!

Combat modifiers
Defender: preparation(-), experience(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
729 casualties reported
Squads: 1 destroyed, 31 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 11 disabled
Engineers: 5 destroyed, 29 disabled
Vehicles lost 45 (3 destroyed, 42 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
5658 casualties reported
Squads: 194 destroyed, 39 disabled
Non Combat: 378 destroyed, 20 disabled
Engineers: 45 destroyed, 3 disabled
Guns lost 20 (15 destroyed, 5 disabled)
Vehicles lost 97 (96 destroyed, 1 disabled)
Units retreated 6
Units destroyed 2

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

After the 13th, the air attacks over Meiktila ended.

Elsewhere, in the dark jungle roads to the East of Meiktila:
(Apr 15th, 1942)
Ground combat at Lashio (62,46)
Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 8740 troops, 96 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 295
Defending force 2100 troops, 26 guns, 1 vehicles, Assault Value = 105

Japanese adjusted assault: 185
Allied adjusted defense: 43

Japanese assault odds: 4 to 1 (fort level 2)
Japanese forces CAPTURE Lashio !!!

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), leaders(-), preparation(-), fatigue(-)
experience(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
135 casualties reported
Squads: 1 destroyed, 9 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled

Allied ground losses:
791 casualties reported
Squads: 19 destroyed, 10 disabled
Non Combat: 22 destroyed, 10 disabled
Engineers: 13 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 5 (5 destroyed, 0 disabled)
Vehicles lost 1 (1 destroyed, 0 disabled)
Units retreated 1

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

Assaulting units:
15th Guards Regiment
17th Indpt Guards Regiment

Defending units:
48th Gurkha Brigade

But on the 17th - the Allied 2E/4E bombers hit Lasho.
They are pretty far off to the East but I have to see what I can do to get some AA and Air Cover over there.

I need to get a couple more units to isolate the forces in Mandalay and destroy the Allied forces there.
(EDIT: Yellow note is Recon Report of enemy forces in Mandalay)

Singapore Apr 9-17, 1942

No need for a map here as nothing significant has changed.
Bombing by 5 Sentai, bombardment interspersed with DAs over this time frame.

Below are the units the 56th will join (as of the 17th).

QUESTION: Should I Shock Attack once the 56th gets back in the battle line?

Bataan Update: Apr 9-14, 1942

I have yet to DA Bataan.
My forces are much smaller than the enemy. I have been bombing with 4 to 5 Sentai and have noticed on the last 3 or 4 turns, there are no more Flak Burst when I bomb.

I still am taking a damaged plane or two, but the bombing results have increased (more holes in the runway, more supply dumps being blown up).

The last two turns I have started bombarding them with encouraging results.
They must be running low or out of supply.

Here is the last Bombardment:
Ground combat at Bataan (78,77)
Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 38067 troops, 457 guns, 209 vehicles, Assault Value = 1154

DanSez -> RE: The Solomons Errupt (6/24/2015 9:35:28 PM)

Yes and there was some action around Luganville -- I want to break that up into a multi-post report, but 'action' on the home front is drawing me away from posting till later tonight.

But no major carrier clash like I had hoped for.
Be back soon....

DanSez -> RE: The Solomons Errupt (6/29/2015 4:57:07 PM)

Another busy week...

Situation Southeast Pacific - Updated to Apr 23, 1942

My first move into the Luganville area was 2 fold:
A. Recon in Force
B. Try to draw the Allies into another Carrier Exchange.

In this first phase, the Recon in Force part was successful
I got fair intel that both Luganville and Noumea were both manned with more than I could take with the small 3 Nav Guard/1 Nav Cont Amphib force I already had onhand.

I did pull the whole group into a tight group to the East of Luganville and presented the Allies with a target to launch some of their bombers. I was counting on Luganville to be crowded as a results.

At this point I begin to get an itchy feeling I am sitting in one spot too long so I have to move.
Recon accomplished on Luganville and Noumea at this point. The CA I wanted to strike earlier is long long gone.

I decide to spread my recon toward Suva to see if any damaged ships are hanging out there.

"Going back for another bite"
Strategic Considerations

The first assessment has to be on the capability of the Overall Commander and what Japan High Command's goals are.
The targets of this exercise are
A. Lord Howe Island
B. Efate Island
C. Ndeni Island

The purpose of Lord Howe Island would be to establish a base to harrass Allied Communications and possibly launch land based bomber attacks on Australian cities. This would take a massive commitment in troops, ships, planes, supplies, fuel and a bit of skill to pull off without undue losses.

The purpose of Efate Island would be to isolate the Luganville/Lunga Allied bases. I do not have enough forces onhand to protect the landing at Efate until I could pull back to Truk, rearm, refuel and load up another set of transports.

The purpose of the Ndeni Island would be more a battle of interdiction in the Lunga/Luganville/Noumea area and provide a shield as Nauru and Ocean Islands are built up. Another goal would be to draw the Allies into surface and carrier battles in this area.

These were the thoughts as I turned the KB once again toward Luganville.

I'm amazed at the forces the Allies have in Burma. Where did they come from and how did he get them there?

He has concentrated most of his air forces in Mandalay (fighters) and Impala (bombers).
I don't know enough about the Allied Order of Battle to comment on where they came from but I am getting sweeps over Meiktila from 4 different Hurrican IItorp squadrons, a couple of P-40E Warhawks, a P38 squadron, a bunch of P-39 Aircobras and the Flying Tigers.

I am not sure if any Restricted LCUs are in Mandalay.

Apr 15, 1942 ** Decision Time

Here is the map for orders on Apr 15. I have discounted the Lord Howe Island option as it is too much for this rookie Admiral to pull off. Maybe next campaign...[sm=character0085.gif]

The decision is basically do I think I can support the deeper invasion of Efate Island, should I instead take Ndeni Island and use it as a base of forward ops, or call the whole thing off.

General Overview Note:
Munda, Buna and Milne Bay have not been invaded at this point.

Situation Southeast Pacific - Updated to Apr 23, 1942 (conclusion)

I want to wrap this up so I can get back to 'real time' reporting ---
The decision was to invade Ndeni.

Soryu and her Amphib force landed in Munda.

I am building up Shortlands and Nauru Island as fast as I can.
Currently (as of the Apr 23rd turn)
25th Air Flotilla is in Rabaul - 144 AvSup
2nd Prov Base Force is in Shortlands - 60 AvSup
15th Base Force is in Munda - working hard to build airfields and forts
Nauru Island has 5 JNAF units - 120 AvSup
Ndeni is still just building forts - AvSup is on the way.

KB is heading toward Truk, Soryu is already there waiting to rejoin.

But last turn, I got an interesting Sub contact just South of Luganville:
Apr 23, 1942 ** ASW attack near Lakatoro at 118,151

Japanese Ships
SS I-10
Allied Ships
DD Ellet
BB Warspite
CA Astoria
CA New Orleans
CL Raleigh
DD Clark
DD Dunlap
DD Balch
DD Fanning

Apr 23, 1942 ** Sub attack near Lakatoro at 118,152

Japanese Ships
SS I-10

Allied Ships
DD Sims
CA Astoria
CA New Orleans
CL Raleigh
DD Clark
DD Dunlap
DD Balch
DD Ellet

Is Allied Command trying to run in a bombardment on Ndeni?

This (the LCUs) is what I was wondering about. From your reports it seems that he has a heck of a lot of ground troops there and I was wondering how he did that.

Back to your operations in the South Pacific, FWIW I agree that Ndeni was the most sensible of the options you proposed. You've got good carrier supremacy and surface force dominance so it makes sense to cash that in for what gains you can make.

The air recon numbers seem very high. In a couple of examples, those numbers were much higher than the combat report from the ground troops. I think the recon (mouse) type lumps all bodies into 'troops' including support none-AV bodies, inflating that number. I wonder if the height of the recon flights effect the exaggeration of FOW.

Diplomatic inquiries assure that PPs are being paid for any transferred units.

DanSez -> RE: The Solomons Errupt (7/19/2015 12:41:12 AM)

wow- long time since last posting.
Work, real life and trying to keep up at least 1 turn a day pace made the last 2 weeks fly by.

Game time:
May 13, 1942 files are awaiting Allied High Command.

The butcher's bill on the first skermishes around the Solomons has finally resolved.

Allied Major Ships lost:
CV Enterprise
CV Saratoga
CV Indomitable
CVL Hermes
CA Louisville
CA Minneapolis
CA Northampton

IJN lost:
CA Furutaka
CA Nachi
CL Tatsuta

Given that, the Allies have been more cautious in my lastest cruise around Ndeni.
I stumbled in exposing a combat surface fleet that the 3 remaining carriers ganged up on and sank 2 CAs and 2 DDs, just proving the unbalanced score above maybe due more to luck than skill.

My word to the noobie is to not get too full of yourself and out-think the game.

Soerabaja, unfortunately, is completely trashed. The only think working there is 1 Manpower factory. Everything else, and I mean everything -- requires repair.

DanSez -> RE: The Solomons Errupt (7/19/2015 12:56:37 AM)

Bataan and Singapore are still holding out.

Bataan: I have purchased most of the 28th Inf Div and they are shipping out to reform at Clark Field to provide more muscle there. I am still outnumbered overall AV but the effects of bombing, bombardment and isolation are bound to have reduced the supply stock piles down.

Singapore: I think he has been sneaking in single supply ships. I have posted subs to prevent this, but only have sunk one so far this game. I am beating them down and expect the remains here to be as shattered and desolute as what I found in the streets of Soerabaja.

This is a battle from May 7th at Singapore:

DanSez -> RE: The Solomons Errupt (7/19/2015 1:04:11 AM)

Other News around the horn:

I finally threw the bums out of Wenchow, but China is grinding down to a slug-fest as I am having problems with supplies.

I have an Tank Division on ship heading for Burma to help the push past Mandalay. A lot of heavy bomber activity there until 3 days ago, I am not sure if he is restaging or if attrition on meager numbers of planes is calling a halt.

Which brings up Air Frames:
I am having a hard time keeping my Oscar Sentais fully stocked. The 'go slow' approach of the first 3 months and the 'careful expansion' that followed is leaving me with fighter groups at about 60-70% strength. I am ramping up both frames and engine production the past month, but again -- careful has been my watch word.

I will post more detail on my production and R&D shortly -- speaking of Oscars, looks like my armored Oscars will start rolling off the assembly line in about 10 days.
[sm=00000028.gif]

DanSez -> RE: The Solomons Errupt (7/19/2015 2:11:46 AM)

Burma front - May 13, 1942

Heavy bomber formations from Impala, escorted by large forces in Mandalay were wearing down the units I had outside Mandalay and I couldn't break the cycle with the 4 fighter sentai deployed at Magwe, so I have pulled back, awaiting the Guards Tank Division and others to rally the offensive in this theater.

You've done a great job on the Allied navy, in spite of a few losses of your own. Are Bataan and Singapore the only remaining Allied bases with a garrison in the DEI/PI/Malaya area? It looks like you'll have that whole region cleaned up pretty soon and that will be a big relief I am sure. Do you have plans in the works for the next stage and targets?

DanSez -> RE: The Solomons Errupt (7/19/2015 2:42:48 AM)

R&D -
Keeping those 500+ Ha-35 engines for full bonus has been hard.
Especially since I am depending on my main line fighter (Army and Navy) plus may other frames draw on this engine.

Something I didn't fully comprehend or calculate for in my 'careful expansion'.

A6M5c is cranking along - currently advancing a month every 10 or 11 days. I hope this will improve as more Ha-35 engine factories repair.

As I said earlier, Ki-43-IIb (armored) just advanced to 6/42 - and in 10-11 days, should advance to 5/42.
I have 2 Ki-43-1c factories cranking out 30/60 planes and they will move to the Ki-43-IIb model. The current R&D factories will move on to the Ki-43-IV.

Ki-44-IIa will come online at the end of this month and give some backup for the Oscars.
I have 1 fully repaired Ki-44-IIc factory chipping away at that delivery date.

Ki-49-IIa Helen (armored) will also come online sometime in June 42. I currently have 1 (30) Ki-49-Ia which will transition to the armored model, and one of the R&D factories will remain for Helen production. The other two will either advance to the last Helen model (Ki-49-IIb) or transition to new lines of R&D.
I haven't decided yet.

A6M2 will remain in production past the A6M3 model release. I plan on bypassing this model and moving two fully repaired R&D factories to the A6M3a model. I thought about building a few A6M3s as backups for the land based IJN fighter Sentais but that doesn't make sense given range is one of the zero's strengths at this stage of the war and the A6M3 has less of it than the A6M2.

G5M3a Betty (armored) with 4 fully repaired R&D factories is currently at 7/44 delivery date. I hope to have the Ha-32 engine above the magical 500 bonus line in the next week to help improve the speed of research.

Many other lines under research, but these are the highlights at this stage of the game.

Thanks for reading my mediocre reports.
I do have some plans. There is another battle brewing around Ndeni - Luganville at the moment and I am trying some unconvential tactics. Not sure how well it will work, but I will get into that tomorrow.

The Northern part of Sumatra is still in Allied control and Batavia in Java. A few other bases in Borneo also. I will give maps and notes on each theater as I work back across to the Solomons and I hope to get back into posting every day or every other day at least.

Supply for the Allied part of Burma must be horrible because they have no road connection to anywhere. That should (??) speed up your conquest.
