May 1943 - The Allied is on the advance

Kurt pulled a fast one and took Wake in a lightning attack.

My forward warning stations failed me… or in other words I had left a gap in the screening line. I had directed my screening subs further down south and had forgotten to send new (repaired) ones to the abandoned stations.

A lone Patrol boats runs into an allied cover force and is obliterated by 6” shells, it does not give me any extra response time, as the allied invasion force ends up only 80 miles from Wake and is spotted by floatplanes anyhow

Skygge -> RE: Supplement to Zuluhours To young to die.. (10/26/2015 4:12:33 PM)

Wakes defense rests on two infantry type units with some 120+ AV combined in level 4 forts.

This I thought will hold an allied surprise invasion for a day, and with a bit of luck for two days as there will be no prolonged softening up of the defenses.

Two days will given me time to bring the KB into play if stationed at Truck

Skygge -> RE: Supplement to Zuluhours To young to die.. (10/26/2015 4:23:38 PM)

Up to April 1943 I had only upgraded two carriers from the KB.
Shokaku and Shikaku had their radar upgrade summer 1942, and the other carriers had no upgrades, as I would rather have the KB on station than have a few more 25mm AA guns. In 1942 the defense of the KB rests on the Zero.

1943 upgrades bring radar, and with allied carriers strength growing the KB need as much radar as possible and can use the extra AA.

So the KB was at Yokohama with 90% of the carriers just out of the dockyards a few days earlier. It had not gone to Truk yet as I was waiting for a last carrier and some destroyers to come out of the dockyards in a few days time.

As I did not think the allied would loiter for long at Wake, I figured the KB out of Yokohama could not do anything at Wake but could possible intercept the retiring allied between Wake and Midway - so course is set accordingly.

At the same time 2 surface forces with 10 Battleships sallies forth from Truk, but with little chance to catch anything …unless my ground forces can hold on to Wake for 2 days.

Skygge -> RE: Supplement to Zuluhours To young to die.. (10/26/2015 4:33:01 PM)

The next day does not go well for the wake defenders.

The single allied bombardment is devastating. The covering bombardment is equally efficient and my AV strength is brought from 120 to 0.

The attacking force is a well balanced and is a hard hitting force.

The garrison goes down fighting. US casualties are high with one unit wiped out. I guess a tank battalion

Skygge -> RE: Supplement to Zuluhours To young to die.. (10/26/2015 4:48:49 PM)

All that the Battleships now can hope for is to bring suffering to the allied now occupying Wake.

The KB still has a chance to catch the retreating allied if they go back towards Midway. As there are slow LSTs in the allied taskforce and air cover is from a few CVEs only, there is still a chance for a strike.
KB adjust course for an intercept closer to Midway.

Skygge -> RE: Supplement to Zuluhours To young to die.. (10/26/2015 4:51:03 PM)

Long Range scouting planes flying from carriers spot the retreating allied. They seem to have moved only slowly; I guess they have refueled.

I love the Judy-C version, it brings naval search to a new level and is definitely a Japanese advantage-
The KB adjust course slightly sailing in 2 division : A faster 29 Knot 1st Division and a 25 knot 2nd Division.

Skygge -> RE: Supplement to Zuluhours To young to die.. (10/26/2015 5:12:40 PM)

During the night the two divisions goes in different directions. 1st Division going SE to intercept if survivors runs for PH or try hide at Midway. 2nd Division goes due east to cover the E and NE escape routes.

Next morning It is the 2nd Division that finds the enemy and more strikes goes in and it looks like a second CVE is doomed and BB-39 USS Arizona is hurt bad.

I now decide to retire the KB as I will not risk it further this close to PH, though this will probably save the Arizona.
The allied has a substantial Fleet Carrier Force with the dreaded Hellcat fighter and as Allied I would have rushed this in to bring about a battle with a spent KB if I could.

The risk is now out of proportion to any possible gain, and I have already pushed my luck far enough.

Skygge -> RE: Supplement to Zuluhours To young to die.. (10/26/2015 5:15:52 PM)

Other Fronts :

Burma is quiet beside from allied bombing raids, which varies from nightly nuisance raids on Rangoon to occasional large bomber formations hitting Japanese outposts.

The nightly raids on Rangoon is a pain, mostly because I often loose a fighter or two to the 50 cal. on the 4E´s . The bombing does little to no damage, but I feel I need send up fighters to interrupt the bombers. I long for my first true night fighter.

The large bombing raids on the outpost are in some ways more spectacular than war winning events. They do get some supply dump hits, but when hitting bases with level 5 or 6 forts overall damage seems negligible.
Though it must be good training off allied aircrews. And I now have some AA units with 70+ xp level  Still they bring down few planes 

DEI and Northern Australia.

Japanese buildup here is now substantial. Several additional IJD have arrived to boost defenses as have artillery, engineers and base units. It will be no walkover. ( I hope).
The allied is trying to build up in Northern Australia but I guess is hampered by supply issues. They try sneak lone AKs along the coast, some get through others are picked off by sub marines and
the occasional IJN surface raiding force.

SW & S Pacific
Lots of bombing of PM and Buna and an increasing number of hit and run bombardment of PM.
I try conserve my air strength for when the allied comes by sea, but I will take the occasional air battle so as not make it too easy for the allied.

I find that all in all I loose more planes to OP than air combat in this theater in spite of all the air activities. Especially the N1K1-J George seems prone to OP. Maybe their less than perfect landing carriage has somehow been programed
Into the equation.

Another finding is that so far I have been able to operate many more airplanes out of forward airfields than I have had air support for. This has worked fine for Zeros, Oscars and Tojos, but not so for service level 3 Georges. They need maintenance and lots of it.

It makes the whole “Mutual supporting bases” thing harder to operate efficiently. No way around it though. Soon the Japanese Army Air Force will get the KI-84 Frank which is an equal demanding aircraft. Still I have need these planes to successfully fight the allied.

I am slowly reducing my garrison furthest to the South as I think the allied will be targeting the Marshalls soon and from there go to either the Marianna’s or the Bonin´s .

Otherwise these garrisons will end up isolated and of no value to the defense of the Empire. They are better deployed in The Solomon’s and on Ndeni.

The Kuril´s are also a possible target, but I think not in 1943, as triggering Kamikaze this soon will be mistake – still defenses have also been strengthen here and more will follow.

Skygge -> RE: Supplement to Zuluhours To young to die.. (10/26/2015 5:17:43 PM)

Economy

Not my strongest side – to say the least.
I have made some costly mistakes along the way. I have had to re-toll some factories from pointless production to something more fruitful. My research program has been less than optimal, and I feel it is not until now
that I actually just start to get a grip on this aspect of the war.

I have never gotten this far in any PBEM game so I have never before had the need as Japanese to really pay close attention to all this, but I now start feeling the pinch of it all, or rather I can see where it can go.
I guess I learn better when under pressure. I am sure it can go downhill fast from here when the pace of war quickens.

Luckily I have a healthy economy boosted by the taking over of undamaged Chinese industry and with all Japanese controlled oil fields fully repaired - but for Urumchi that has an output of 49 out of 50.
This I think partly makes up for my mistakes – but only partly.

I can see my Achilles heel is first of all the Petro Chemicals. I need start husbanding my resources much better and curtail naval activities to only what is necessary.

I need “Think Green” – so I can build more devices to bomb the Bejeezus out of the unenlightened.

Skygge -> RE: Supplement to Zuluhours To young to die.. (11/5/2015 3:23:21 PM)

The Rising Sun flies over Wake Island again.
This Island has seen much death and destruction, and I am not sure that the last blood has been shed here.

The Crack 110 ID had for some time prepared for the eventuality of a need for a counter attack on Wake, but were not fully prepped when order came to board
the APs and fast AKs waiting in Shanghai.

The attack was done under the cover of a large force of Battleships and supported by 2 days of air attacks from the KB.

As the 110 ID was only about 50% prepped and only 1 LSD was available, I knew there would be a lot of disruption and circumstances were not ideal for the invading infantry,
But I felt that the counter attack had to go in a once, as time would only work in favor for the allied. It could give them time to reinforce or in other way prepare defenses
– or even worse spring a trap on me with their Carriers.

The shock attack adjusted some 300+ AV down to just 59 AV, so this could have gone wrong if circumstances had been slightly different.
- but I figured things would be even worse on the other side. Which it was. Allied adjusted AV went down to only 2 AV. With no forts and poorly supplied the result could then only go one way.

I did make a mistake in keeping the KB in the same hex for 2 days to provide air cover and to bomb the defenders. The US subs homed in on the hex, and Japanese ASW was not up to the task of protecting the carriers.
Two attacks were made by US subs, and Zuikaku took 1 torpedo. Damage is minimal and she can easily keep up with the fleet and is fully operational, but it will result in a couple of weeks in a dockyard.
She and her sister were very well build ships. I think the best carrier design anywhere until the arrival of the Essex class

As I have spare Divisions in China with little to do I have had some of them prepping for possible counter attack targets like Wake and Tarawa – but I need be increasingly careful with such adventures out of fear of an allied Carrier Trap
The probability of a successful outcome of such a counter attack is diminishing fast.

Burma is very quiet - which (also) worries me.
Where is all the allied Armor and where are the Marine Divisions?
The uncertainty makes me as jitty as a small forest creature

I feel Kurt is planning to hit me hard somewhere, but with so much space to cover I fell thin everywhere, and I have no intelligence as to where he will hit. My intelligence is limited to “Heavy Radio Traffic spotted at Sydney” or something to that
effect.

Most of his recent activities have been in the southern Gilbert´s where he is setting up bases, that combined with the recent Wake adventure makes me believe he is aiming at Island hopping though the Marshalls on to
the Marianna’s and or the Bonin´s. These places now have the highest priority for reinforcements. Maybe my counter attack at Wake can buy me some extra time – even if just some weeks. I doubt he has many combat units prepped
for another go at it soon.

My withdrawal of forces from Fiji and New Caledonia is progressing and soon only rearguard units will be left here. These places are becoming more difficult to defend as they now are too far flung to resupply in safety.
The main defense line in the south Pacific has moved North to Ndeni and Guadalcanal.

In the DEI and Burma I try to keep enough Division out of the frontline ready to rapidly redeploy so as to be able to successful counter any allied main thrust as soon as it is identified.

My biggest weakness is still fuel and supply. I seem to have accumulated very little when I compare to other AAR games.
But I will fight with what I got and try take toll of every allied move.

And the tired but jubilant 110 ID

Bif1961 -> RE: Supplement to Zuluhours To young to die.. (11/6/2015 2:58:39 PM)

If you are ahead 4.3 to 1 why are you not in auto VP? In 1943 once over 4 to 1, it is a VP auto victory. Did yu agree to play on ignoring the Japanese auto victory conditions?

Skygge -> RE: Supplement to Zuluhours To young to die.. (11/6/2015 3:31:46 PM)

yes, we agreed to play on regardless of AV. We both want to go to the end to see what the game has to offer there.

Skygge -> RE: Supplement to Zuluhours To young to die.. (11/21/2015 10:00:30 AM)

Tojo is now considered a second line fighter.

I just looked up and I see that in 1944 the allied start to get 175 P-47 pr. months.

I might run out of trained pilots then.

Skygge -> RE: Supplement to Zuluhours To young to die.. (11/24/2015 3:20:27 PM)

Burma September 1943

The allied is now moving forward in Burma, split up in four columns.
First I wondered at the dispersion, but then if all allied units were in only one main thrust, it would be easier for me to pull units out of other sectors to reinforce the sector under threat.
My recons would have identified the threat and reinforcements rushed in.
When I first started playing this game (against the AI) I found little use for these recons and wanted bombers instead. Now in PBEM I need more recons and would gladly exchange bombers
to get more recons.

One column is advancing along the coast. Recon tell me some 15 units with 50.000 troops and 500 AFVs – they are opposed by 2 ID & 20 ID + 6 art- type units. – some 36.000 Japanese troops
This can at best push me back to clear a land road for him to Ramee Island, and then be a springboard for further advance through Prome. But it is a long and arduous track, and will not expelled
Me quickly from Burma.

What looks like a holding force is in front of Toungoo. Recon tell me some 10 units 30.000 troops and 300 AFVs - they are opposed by 16 A HQ 33 ID & 55 ID + 14 art type units – some 37.000 Japanese troops with level 6 forts.
Seems to be not much of a threat.

A third column is advancing on the parallel inland road of Toungoo. Recon tell me some 18 units 25.000 troops and no less than 740 AFVs- they are opposed by 15 A HQ 16 ID & 56 ID + 7 art type units - some 34.000 Japanese troops
This I find to be by far the most serious threat, as a Japanese defeat here will force me to a general withdrawal back towards Rangoon, and with the loss of Ramee Island could give the allied a supply boost.
Consequently I am reinforcing this sector with AT and artillery units that I am pulling out from Toungoo

A fourth column has just annihilated the naval guard unit that was on outpost duty on the river crossing on the Dirt road leading into Thailand. Recon tell me some 8 units 53.000 troops and no less than 820 AFVs
I knew it could not hold any serious advance, but I did not expect it to be instant annihilated at the crossing. – but Ok these guard units are frail and got hit by very strong forces.

Ground combat at 61,50 (near Taung Gyi)

Just inside the Thai border most of the Thai army has dug in well supported by Japanese units (SS will follow)
Some curious things I have noticed here:

A. The Thai units are very quick to dig in. They reach fort level 5 very quickly. Maybe because of them having only few large heavy weapons.
It is hard for a Japanese ID to dig in above fort level 2 even after months in the same spot.
B. Their moral soars quickly when out here in the Jungle. They reach 99 morale very quickly, and all squads reach fighting form. I take it must be because of the Japanese HQ they are stack with.
The Thai units can spend years in bases and maintain a poor morale – but out here in their dugouts they seem happily motivated with all weapons oiled and ready.

I wonder what the allied can throw at me at this stage of the war in terms of AFVs. Will it be enough to quickly dislodge me, or will the terrain swing outcome in my favor?
It will be interesting to see.

The Air war over Burma has followed its usual pattern of massive bomber raids on outposts and fighter sweeps of Rangoon.
The bomber raids I ignore, as they do little harm. The fighter sweeps of Rangoon I hotly contest with varied results, but overall the Franks, Georges and Tony´s seem to hold their own.

So far the Air War has been less intensive than I see in many other games on display. Total losses so far are :
Allied : 4.014
Japanese : 4.914

Kurt has wisely not thrown units into unequal fights and I have mostly only committed land based airpower to support important land offensive operations, and have not sought any kind of air attrition since the fall of the DEI.
An Air War with no other objective than attrition has not appealed to me though the allied pool of planes in 1942 is very meagre.

With the addition of a focused training program I have been able to build up a pool of skilled pilots that I think will help me over the coming months.
I thing I have finally gotten my air production in order and Research of new planes is now well underway. I will be able to contest Kurt in the Air for a while yet.

Bad mistakes has been made along the way, I know because I made them - like the Tabby. That was a transport plane I really wanted. Nice Load and range. That can come in handy for rapidly shifting forces to threated areas.
– only when it reached the actual production stage did I notice that it is a IJN plane, so it will never replace my Army transport. Damn.
Or the Jack. –why would I want to build a IJN fighter inferior to others and a dead end for further development? - so I researched it and never build any.

Back to : I will be able to contest Kurt in the Air for a while yet.
Though a few things looks promising, I can still see a possible down fall. When the war intensifies and the Air War escalates the Japanese pool of skilled pilots can still be grinded down though attrition. It will not
happen through a few months of intense air warfare but will require a sustained effort but it is potential doable.
Though I will research new and better planes, I will also need to be able to build them in quantities. I think I may have over done my research and squandered too much fuel, supply and HI and 1945 may see me short.
Lets see how my Airpower looks like in 1945.

I recently read on this forum that one often forgets (especially when playing the Japanese) that whatever the Japanese do, there is a limit to their industrial capacity. You will never get more HI than you have spare fuel for.
Expand and conquer as much HI as you like – fuel will set a limit. This I find – partially in hind sight – to be true.

Happy Thais

3rd RTA D. arrived less than 2 weeks ago and is already at level 2 forts and moral is going up quickly.

21 ID has been digging in for months and is at only level 2 forts still

I hope I will be attacked here, as I would like see the Thai fight when supported by Japanese units

Skygge -> RE: Supplement to Zuluhours To young to die.. (11/24/2015 3:55:35 PM)

New Caledonia and Fiji now firmly in allied hands and allied forces are now pouring in.

Question is now where Kurt will advance from here. Will he start a campaign up though the Solomon's as I hope he will.
here he can get support from land based air

Shortest way to Japan is Island hopping over the Marshalls which I now only defended lightly - There are simply too many atolls to defend, and once one or two have fallen the rest will be isolated.
Instead substantial garrisons have been build up on Ponape, Truk, The Marianna's and the Bonins, so they cannot fall to surprise invasions, but will require major and sustained commitment of naval power by the allied.
So it will not be an easy way, as long as I have the KB as a deterrent, as all major moves need be under cover of allied carriers. Here I think it will be into 1944 before they have the strength to roam freely in range of major Japanese airbases.

Biggest threat to my ability to try hold on into 1945 is if the oil and fuel supply line is interrupted or interfered with.
What I fear most is an invasion of Java or Sumatra. Luckily that will also not be that easy as again it must be done under cover of carriers. To help counter an invasion here I have moved the slow BB´s to Surabaya and most of my land and air reinforcements
now go here. As long as I can deny the allied access to good airbases I should be able to dominate this area for a good 6 months still. Consequently any invasion here will be meet with all I got at hand.

I would really be at a loss what to do if the Chinese front had not been buttoned up. I think I can hold the mountain passes from Burma into China with about the 10 IDs I have in this area, so this leaves me with substantial forces to buy out from.
So far I have not bought out any Army Divisions in Japan nor do I think I ever will. I might as well leave them there to guard the Emperor and instead buy out units from China.

I really look forward to see where I will be hit the next time and how hard.

And what will Kurt do in PNG?

Losses on both sides are substantial with the plentiful Allied Flak proving to be deadly.

Not so on the ground.

Both bomber forces seem to do minimal damage
