Okay, that got a good laugh out of me.[:)] I made a choice of pictures of rock formations that were not from Nevada. So I took them out. It seems I'm not good at Nevada facts either. i got the population comparison wrong. Good ole Curtis Lemay pointed that out. I'll stick to las Vegas news.

Orm -> RE: Las Vegas as it grows. (11/6/2015 5:56:00 PM)

Any more, cool, news from Vegas?

Zap -> RE: Las Vegas as it grows. (11/8/2015 5:41:45 PM)

Its been said you can't win in Vegas, some do. A resident they call Vegas Dave has been betting on sports for several years now with good results. It wasn't always that way. He had some bad times where he lost all his money and his parents money. They lost their house because of his bad bets. Vegas Dave did not give up but found a way to win betting on sports. Recently has had good fortune winning a 500,000 dollar payday and Just won 2.5 million betting on the Kansas City Royals to win the world Series. How did he do it? He made a futures bet of 100,000 dollars on the Kansas city Royals to win the World Series before the season began. He promised to buy his Parents a new home with his winnings. What happens with most gamblers when they are successful at betting regularly, is that the Casino where he has won most of that money will not take his bets in the future. A crappy but usual tactic of the casinos.

The big news in Las Vegas is a deal just completed to build a couple factories. Nevada has been diversifying ever since the economy took a dump in the US. Everyone in the state realizes diversity is absolutely necessary.
So now we will have a car plant producing electric cars. And a plant testing a new futuristic transportation system. Hyperloop will build a 2 mile test track inside a tube. They believe they can make a transportation system using tubes that will allow vehicles to travel at speeds of 700 miles an hour.

From the Review-Journal:
"Dag Reckhorn, Faraday's global vice president of manufacturing, said the company backed by Chinese billionaire Yueting Jia hopes to break ground in early 2016 and begin producing electric cars within two years.

Jia, with a net worth of $7.9 billion according to Forbes, owns LeTV, which observers call a Chinese Netflix. He said Faraday is focused on "creating the next generation of seamlessly connected, intelligent electric vehicles and mobility solutions."

Faraday's venture into Nevada comes about a year after Tesla Motors, led by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, began building a $5 billion lithium-ion factory in Northern Nevada where batteries for its electric cars and home-energy storage units will be made.

Also this week, Hyperloop Technologies Inc., announced it will build a test facility for a futuristic transportation system at the same North Las Vegas industrial park."

I thought that Vegas was focusing on entertainment and events. So thank you for educating me. [:)]

Zap -> RE: Las Vegas as it grows. (12/14/2015 3:18:51 PM)

Hi Orm, entertainment is still important and 2 casinos are now being built. However, Nevada can no longer just rely on it. If there is a bad turn in the economy tourism is hurt. So 24 hour fun is still the bottom line draw.

Las Vegas, can't accommodate all the request for conventions so soon the Riviera Casino will be torn down and replaced with an expansion to the Convention Center

During the '30's my father worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps building Hoover Dam. He took a train out west that stopped at a small town with a dirt road...called Las Vegas.

Zap -> RE: Las Vegas as it grows. (6/22/2016 9:34:06 PM)

This is big News for Las Vegas. After years of courting professional teams. Board of Governors for NHL approved an expansion team LAS VEGAS WILL HAVE A PROFESSIONAL HOCKEY TEAM For the 2017/2018 season. Its been a long time coming.

There is talk now of other professional sports will now be open to Las Vegas. Hope so!

Other news construction is progressing on 2 Casinos slated to open soon. The convention center is now preparing for its expansion. So that once again Las Vegas will offer the best options for companies looking for convention space.

Good question!. I don't really know with certainty. But it seems to me they get to select some from the draft. And this I'm really unclear about but I thought they get to choose a player from the roster of existing teams? Maybe someone can offer something more accurate

Usually with expansion draft the existing teams can protect so many players on their roster, the unprotected players can be drafted by the new team(s)...there are different variations...

Oh okay,
Thanks for that! Is that a separate draft from the normal draft of rookie players?

But here people are excited to a high level. Once LV was chosen a large number went to buy season tickets.

Just curious, your avatar is not the hockey team wings? I'm sure not. Every time I see it makes me think of the Detroit Red Wings[:)] It has so much the NHL look to it.

Yes, it would be a separate draft from the rookie draft...my avatar is from the original group "Wings", Paul & Linda McCartney, Denny Laine, the lineup changed over the years...the avatar logo...

There a 2 owners the Maloofs and Majority owner Foley( a Canadian by the way) Said since he is the Majority owner he will probably pick the name of the team. His favorite nick name is Black Knights

So a good chance they will be called the Las Vegas Black Knights. Personally, I like the Las Vegas Rat Pack

Maybe the Rat Pack will be the cheerleaders.

I hadn't thought about the cheer leaders! Though rat pack would not be appropriate. Something more in line with "The Follies Girls". And they use the follies girls costumes

No update for a while now. Is there nothing new happening in Vegas?

Zap -> RE: Las Vegas as it grows. (9/27/2016 9:29:28 AM)

Always something new here.

A Chinese themed casino opens in December. Supposed to cater to Chinese visitors(make them feel at home).

Also in 2017 Will begin construction of a 4 billion dollar Asia themed Casino.

Now that Las Vegas has a PROFESSIONAL Hockey team this year, Las Vegas is making overtures to the National Football league to land a Pro Football team. Lots of pre planning and politics going on for that to happen.

One negative thing that has homeowners concerned is the increase in crime in neighborhoods. California let out a large amount of criminals from prisons(they claimed to have no money to house them). well, guess where they ended up? LasVegas. So some of the increase in crime is blamed on California.
One can get confused about Las Vegas thinking Casinos are what principally makes up Las Vegas. Consider, Las Vegas and surrounding neighborhoods comprise a population of 2 million people. So its more family life here then one might imagine. Though a large number of those people work at the Casinos

Some good points...just like in the 'SimCity' simulation, when you have the gambling element in your city, crime will go up, just ask the Las Vegas Police Department.
