Southern Army, 5th Fleet amoung others are unrestricted Command HQ's. China army is restricted, but doesn't matter if you get it to HK, it will be within range of Formosa.

When you open up the unit detail, the HQ is described as COMMAND HQ ....

Then what I did not understand is the restricted part. There is a slight disconnect in my mind between the Ground Unit drop down and the actual unit, such as the Southern Army showing in the [S]tatic attached but not in the Unrestricted, but I think I have it figured-out now.

Thanks. A Cmd HQ will be on the way next turn.

Can you give me your definition of command HQ? This has always confused me. In my Ground Unit drop down, all of the Command HQ are static restricted.

Southern Army is another Command Hq; China Expeditionary is another; definition may be the highest command in the hierarchy which does not report to anyone above but to himself.

You are slow Sir in reducing enemy in Formosa, and what about Southern china? Time may not be at our advantage in current situation. Thinking of flanking the river but marching on Formosa plains from the southern tip or southern coast?

In "stock" scen 1 Souther Army is unrestricted....someone has also pointed out the possibility to move Chinese Expeditionary Army in souther china but in range of Formosa...a possibility. Anyhow also the other Hqs, army corps or army level, do help, and a lot

Flanking the river would be a three to four week march leaving my flank exposed and possibly being stuck there for the duration. The south is already blocked as you can see from a few posts back.

That is why I need the most efficient way to cross the river.

el lobo -> RE: The Gamiest Game in Town. El Lobo (J), vs. Rio Bravo (A) (3/21/2018 7:43:43 AM)

The Command structure is moving into place. I already had an Army HQ in place at Taichu and a Corps HQ is being flown in. I have an Army Air (radius 5) and Naval HQ (radius 1) at Taihoku. A Command HQ will be within range in a week or so. Bombing is underway.

Back to crossing the river.

I have read elsewhere that once one-third of the AV crosses a river, the remainder will not Shock on their crossing. My question is then, one-third of what, who's, AV?

Can I divide an ID, run one-third across and follow with the rest? Will that satisfy the game's requirement or will I have to rinse and repeat until I get one-third of the total AV that is at Taichu at the time?

Experience shows that a Shock attack across a river in this type of situation will cost one-half to two-thirds of the total AV crossing. I think I could afford to lose that much of a couple of IDs but to loose that much of the total AV would be disastrous.

TIA.

That rule is about crossing when you already have some AV on the other side, and describes situation where you follow up with some additional AV through already conquered hex side. Too much (more than 1/3 AV of what's already there IIRC), and the beachhead guys will not be able to provide cover, necessitating shock attack.

In your case you are pondering initial assault, and here you should use all combat units you have in the crossing, arriving the same turn in Combat mode. Mostly full divisions which are prepped and well-rested, tanks are great too, brigades and regiments more vulnerable to losses (but use them anyway). Leave engineers to arrive in later turns. Do bombardment and bombing the same turn to rack up disruption.

el lobo -> RE: The Gamiest Game in Town. El Lobo (J), vs. Rio Bravo (A) (3/23/2018 12:19:40 AM)

Thanks GA. Working on a plan.

Lowpe -> RE: The Gamiest Game in Town. El Lobo (J), vs. Rio Bravo (A) (3/23/2018 3:26:16 PM)

I think that you need to be able to naval bombard those forces. I don't know that you are able too or not, but if you can bombard for several consecutive days prior to the assault, plus the day of the assault, plus aerial bombing you can pull off the attack with 25 prep.

Naval bombardments will neuter the Allied air force, if any.

But if you can't severely bomb and bombard those bases, then your troops will be shredded even at 100 prep.

PaxMondo -> RE: The Gamiest Game in Town. El Lobo (J), vs. Rio Bravo (A) (3/26/2018 3:33:30 AM)

Agreed, If you cannot disrupt him prior to the crossing, be prepared for a lot of losses.

el lobo -> RE: The Gamiest Game in Town. El Lobo (J), vs. Rio Bravo (A) (3/27/2018 7:24:25 AM)

Thanks guys.

As noted above, bombings have commenced daily and will increase next turn. The Cmd HQ will be in place next turn. A bombardment is being set-up. Preparation in some of the key IDs is in the high thirties.

Frank R's first outing.

GAME DAY Jan 14, 1944 Turn 769

On this game day I raised the white flag and handed my swards over to Admiral Bravo and Captain Haggard and they were accepted graciously.

I will post the events that led-up to this decision, but first I want to thank and commend Rio and Hag-san for a great game and congratulate them on their victory. They played brilliantly.

I would also like to thank Pax, Lowpe, GetAssista, mind-messing and all of the others who dropped into my AAR to offer advise and wisdom.

As a note, I have not read Rio's AAR nor opened their turn as of yet so what follows is pretty much how I perceived it at the time.

TALAUD-EILANDEN - FORMOSA Dec 22, 1943 Turn 746

Meanwhile fighting continues at Formosa. This is about the tenth hit on the Nevada, she is a great bomb soak for the Allies. It will be interesting to see the damage later.

CHINA Dec 28, 1943 Turn 752

This is a big day, first China. Awhile back, I brought in an ID from Burma to Canton and started them with some other units towards Chaochow and Swatow. Rio twigged them and started bombing them. Over the next two weeks, with bombing only, he reduced them from 540 AV to AV 30. An average of ten bombings a day. This day alone ~2800 casualties and seventeen squads destroyed.

The next turns, I threw every type of a/c I had at him on LRCAP and they didn't even slow him down, The power of the Allied 4Es was a major element in my later decision to surrender the game.
