I have no illusions there. Actually they are retreating in pretty good order preventing large encirclements.

Adolf is getting better advice and listening to it this time ......

but please continue to extend yourself .... Guderian is dying to release his panzers

ultradave -> RE: Ultradave(WA) vs scout1(Ger), '44 D-Day Start, Turn 3, June 13 (6/24/2015 12:08:31 PM)

Allies take L'Orient, and isolate Brest and St. Nazaire in Brittany. Meanwhile the US XIX Corps, V Corps, and the 1st Cdn Army make a large breakthrough between Paris and Orleans. British 1st Army expands it's bridgehead over the Loire north of Paris.

couple of questions - really just comparing this with the 'typical' 1943 start that finally gets around to an invasion of France.

You're doing dramatically better than seems to be achievable from 1943. Just wondering if this was primarily (a) the impact of a 1944 start (with presumably the Germans locked into their historical dysfunctional deployment); (b) a secret beta patch (always get confused when people put up AARs using a non-public beta and can't/don't explian the implications; or, (c) you're a genius.

Of course more than one may apply [;)]

decourcy2 -> RE: Ultradave(WA) vs scout1(Ger), '44 D-Day Start, Turn 3, June 13 (6/24/2015 6:25:29 PM)

I think that the '44 campaign is balanced towards the Allies but perhaps more importantly I THINK that there is a bug in the morale code.

We are discussing this on the beta forum, no units are gaining morale in refit mode. As the American army goes from 55 to 60 morale in Jan '44 if you start in '43 your units in England, reinforcements, what not are still going to have 55 morale in June '44.

I think this is the problem but it has not yet been confirmed by the big bosses, so still just my opinion until then.

Curious what version they're using as well. I would assume the biggest difference is that the Germans start in a supply crunch with the '44 scenario that likely won't exist if you start a '43 scenario. The most recent changes to divide supply by 10 if random < railyard damage and the shorter range to pull rail capacity (30 hexes instead of 50) I think are going to make a big difference.

With the change in TF naval interdiction and these new supply rules the Allies have gotten a big bump that is going to obviate a lot of what we saw in the earliest AARs.

scout1 -> RE: Ultradave(WA) vs scout1(Ger), '44 D-Day Start, Turn 3, June 13 (6/24/2015 10:24:08 PM)

I'm thinking Dave is a genius ........

scout1 -> RE: Ultradave(WA) vs scout1(Ger), '44 D-Day Start, Turn 3, June 13 (6/24/2015 10:25:53 PM)

I'm running 37 .... assume Dave is too, but he'd need to asnwer that ....

scout1 -> RE: Ultradave(WA) vs scout1(Ger), '44 D-Day Start, Turn 3, June 13 (6/24/2015 10:27:22 PM)

The flip side though in fairness is that I don't know how to handle the German defence/retreat ...... Always gotta consider ALL possibilities ......

ultradave -> RE: Ultradave(WA) vs scout1(Ger), '44 D-Day Start, Turn 3, June 13 (6/24/2015 10:46:04 PM)

I'm running .43 at the moment. I'd have to do some real digging to find out if there is something that is skewing things my way.

Perhaps others would have a better idea of that. My play testing has been concentrated on the Tunisia aspect.

Or I'm a genius :-)

carlkay58 -> RE: Ultradave(WA) vs scout1(Ger), '44 D-Day Start, Turn 3, June 13 (6/25/2015 1:14:44 AM)

It is possible in version 44 to get the Axis into a supply delivery crunch by May 44. It may not last long but it is possible to do.

ultradave -> RE: Ultradave(WA) vs scout1(Ger), '44 D-Day Start, Turn 3, June 13 (6/25/2015 12:45:07 PM)

Brest and St. Nazaire captured by the 3rd Army, which now is free to head east to face the main part of the German army. 1st Army holds the line of the Loire to the south, and 1st Army's XIX Corps, the Canadian Army and armor from the V Corps push east to the south of Paris. British 2d Army expands the bridgehead over the Seine to the north of Paris and captures Rouen. The Germans army is becoming a very large mass concentrated east of Paris, with the only line of defense being on the Loire (where I'm not pushing very hard) and from Le Havre east along the Seine (also leaving that alone right now).

The addition of Pattons 3rd Army once they make their way east will put even more pressure on the German defense.

ultradave -> RE: Ultradave(WA) vs scout1(Ger), '44 D-Day Start, Turn 3, June 13 (6/25/2015 12:47:10 PM)

In Italy, I've been hammering at the eastern end of the German defense line and have made some progress, pushing through a small breakthrough which has partly split the defense.

loki100 -> RE: Ultradave(WA) vs scout1(Ger), '44 D-Day Start, Turn 3, June 13 (6/27/2015 7:56:46 AM)

I'm surprised your opponent is still trying to contest the Loire valley ... I'd have thought getting the Germans all onto a west-east defense (ie behind the Seine) would have been a better idea?

ultradave -> RE: Ultradave(WA) vs scout1(Ger), '44 D-Day Start, Turn 3, June 13 (6/27/2015 11:20:58 AM)

I agree. And 1st Army, even though you can see in the picture is mostly broken down into regts. is making steady but slow progress. He's also contesting Paris. Poor Paris.

scout1 -> RE: Ultradave(WA) vs scout1(Ger), '44 D-Day Start, Turn 3, June 13 (6/28/2015 1:27:42 AM)

easy for you to say ... You don't know where Goering's girlfriends are at .......

ultradave -> RE: Ultradave(WA) vs scout1(Ger), '44 D-Day Start, Turn 3, June 13 (6/28/2015 9:11:25 PM)

Biggest event from this turn is the liberation of Paris. The German army fought in the streets of Paris, but they were evicted by a determined attack from the 1 Cdn Corps supported by the US 5th Armored Division. To the south of Paris, Canadians and the US XIX Corps (Armored) push ahead, routing numerous German units.

Meanwhile Patton continues to head east to add more strength to the Allied front. Supply is a bit of an issue because the rail network has been almost completely destroyed. But the Germans seem to have at least as bad supply problems as the majority of units encountered are quite weak.

Goerings girlfriend(s) are in the northern districts .... so no problem yet

ultradave -> RE: Ultradave(WA) vs scout1(Ger), '44 D-Day Start, Turn 3, June 13 (6/29/2015 12:31:46 AM)

Well, no problem with Goering's girlfriends anyway. Did he pack them with him when that Army Group HQ routed out of Paris?

scout1 -> RE: Ultradave(WA) vs scout1(Ger), '44 D-Day Start, Turn 3, June 13 (6/29/2015 10:30:50 PM)

Army Group bugged out in good order ..... Remember, Lee always wanted to lead at the front .....

Adolf had been listening to poor advise about defense ..... That source is no longer a problem .... or around for that matter .... Adjustments in progress, thank god the railway system still in strong .... Supply situation, unlike our past games, sucks for the axis ..... Been making to damn many volkswagons for the common folks .....

ultradave -> RE: Ultradave(WA) vs scout1(Ger), '44 D-Day Start, Turn 3, June 13 (6/30/2015 8:23:57 PM)

hammer time

scout1 -> RE: Ultradave(WA) vs scout1(Ger), '44 D-Day Start, Turn 3, June 13 (7/1/2015 11:31:24 PM)

What hammer ?
Where hammer ?

ultradave -> RE: Ultradave(WA) vs scout1(Ger), '44 D-Day Start, Turn 3, June 13 (7/7/2015 1:22:39 AM)

Patton moves east to join the party. From north to south, British 1st army, Canadian Army, US 3rd Army, US 1st Army.

ultradave -> RE: Ultradave(WA) vs scout1(Ger), '44 D-Day Start, Turn 3, June 13 (7/8/2015 12:03:37 AM)

He might just do that. That's him in the middle of those airfields SW of Paris.

ultradave -> RE: Ultradave(WA) vs scout1(Ger), '44 D-Day Start, Turn 3, June 13 (7/9/2015 7:09:25 PM)

US 1st Army expands south and east. US 3rd Army attacks southeast of Paris, with the Cdn 1st Army on its northern flank. The British force their way across the Somme in two places, taking Abbeville and Amiens from the Germans. The first half of a French Corps comes ashore at St. Nazaire. The plan there is to have the French relieve the 1st Army units in the southwest of France and push their way south cleaning up the remaining German resistance there. Another US Corps joins the 3rd Army to add to its strength.

Railroad repair is slow. Too slow for my liking :-) Can't expect miracles I guess after bombing the rail lines to scrap metal. One aspect of taking the Brittany peninsula and then moving south from there is that a large number of RR repair units went in that direction. Unfortunately that repair job is lower priority. They are now just catching up to repairing rail lines near the front (notice them all along the Channel, between Le Havre and Dieppe).

I'm definitely behind the "schedule" of historical advance for the Allies, but I think most of this is not for lack of effort, but a forward defense on Scott's part, and not falling back very far to new defensive lines. His holding Paris and making me fight for it cost several weeks of not advancing much.

The situation as of mid October (turn 21 of the DDay start scenario).
