India....

Why did those five Oz units show up there, they are now isolated by rail.

Hmmm...should I make an all out rush here to surround Calcutta or move to destroy the 5 Oz units.

The 6th Aus Division was one hex north of Calcutta...

The 2nd Assam Rifles and a base force are guarding the last rail line to Calcutta. They were bombed heavily this turn.

I am bombing the bases to the west of Calcutta today...it isn't heavily held, and might attempt a paratroop drop there. A division is one hex away from the other remaining rail link to Calcutta. I am trying to cut Calcutta's supply and then figure out what to do. I suspect his has built forts like crazy, and is willing to sacrifice the 33 or so units there to hold Calcutta, but maybe not. I have 12 units and 24K troops cut off in Ledo so if I where to drop everything and take Calcutta that would really hurt the Allies in India.

Right now, I am not nearly strong enough to do so.

I believe I can get into Calcutta via Diamond Harbor. And I have several BBs and CAs bombarding here...which would make taking Calcutta easier too, once Diamond Harbor fell.

Decisions.

First off, not really studying your AAR, so I could easily have missed some things.

You are at June 42? now ... you want to calc how many US units he has bought out against your HR's. I haven't noted seeing them, so he has done one of two things:

1. They are on their way to India or Oz.
2. They are prepping for a surprise party.

To me, the trick in '42 for the IJ is to keep track of those. More important than the allied CV's. CV's cannot take bases, ID's can.
The way I have best seen to accomplish the above is to keep forcing the action and make the allies commit them in piece meal fashion at places of your choosing.
The most dangerous is the second, because then you are susceptible to a Mr. Kane/Nemo type of landing somewhere that you are not prepared to handle.

At this point, based upon what I have read, I would be worried about those units .... your opponent is too good. He will not be idle ...

A little Japanese intelligence work.

Pax, you are correct, I am a little worried. Heck, I am always worried.[;)]

But your post got me to micromanage my naval search this day...so thanks.[&o]

Also working on combining divisions. The 2nd in the SRA for example.

Does scen 30 have the fixed pwhex for the Calcutta hexes? If so, then remember you can attack from Diamond harbor without triggering shock attack.

If you want to get your opponent's 'attention', try taking Calcutta ... big hurt on him if you do, economic perk for you if you do.

True ... but ...

Go to the screenshot in post #419. That shows the Calcutta garrison as comprising:

135,300 troops
1,515 guns
1,272 AFVs

Using my rule of thumb, which is usually quite accurate, ust the troops numbers gives a garrison with 4510 unadjusted AV. However,in this instance there are so many AFVs that one should take them into account too. At least 10% and perhaps 30% of the AFV park could be added to the unadjusted AV. Thus the estimate of the Calcutta garrison would be one within the range of 4630 - 4890 unadjusted AV. This is before any forts and terrain modifiers are added. Consequently unless Japan has about 10,000 AV to commit to Calcutta, it "ain't" going to capture Calcutta real soon.

The wisdom of tying down a substantial IJA force in investing Calcutta is somewhat dubious. Particularly when there are easy pickings outside of Calcutta and as Lowpe's last post shows there are possibilities of destroying in detail elements of the enemy which venture outside of Calcutta.

Let the enemy remain in mass behind whatever forts exist in Calcutta doing nothing, continuously eating supplies whose production is being steadily reduced with the capture of nearby Indian industry or allow it to leave the safety of Calucutta and defeat it outside.

Alfred

Lowpe -> RE: Bakersfield (11/7/2015 8:05:44 PM)

Calcutta defense is down substantially, but still quite strong.

Those three circled hexes to the far west are very interesting...a little recon is called for.[:)]

I think Alfred is right here, Calcutta won't fall fast lessen he abandons it. I will continue expanding around with the goal of juicy industry and potential for eliminating other units.

But I suspect those combat units the Allies removed are looking at hitting my spearheads...however, nailing those Aussie units is now one of my highest priorities. Run them out of supply and trash them as fast as I can. A diversion threatening Calcutta's supply line might buy enough time.

Lowpe -> RE: Bakersfield (11/7/2015 10:11:39 PM)

In plane notes, today the H6K4 retires and productions begins on the H6K5 Mavis flying boat with much better range. And next month production begins on the H8K1 Emily.

We are 36% done on advancing the Oscar IIa to June. In the next two days two more factories will most likely fully repair; and two more after them within 7 days. That will be 7 size 30 factories that will then join another factory working on the Oscar IIb. So that all factories repair to size 30, I am moving one factory to the Oscar IIa today, and will advance others as needed.

The Oscar IIb is a very important plane. She has 2 250kg bombs; armor; better range; max speed of 341; and two cl 12.7 mm guns. Big improvement at the cost of some low agility. Plus there are plentiful squadrons that upgrade to her -- by my count 13 that are currently active.

I have a target date of the Oscar IIb coming online in July of 1942.[X(]

PaxMondo -> RE: Bakersfield (11/8/2015 1:47:29 AM)

IIb will be your mainstay for a while ... III is a slight upgrade ... IV will be your ultimate fighter for a lot of groups in a PDU OFF game. Push your RnD to get it as fast as you can. You'll build it until game end, so you can't build too many.

Lowpe -> RE: Bakersfield (11/9/2015 8:28:25 PM)

It is getting interesting around India...CA/DD task forces spotted to the west of Chitt. Oz troops come out of Calcutta to play and I continue to try and corner more forces north of Calcutta.

I forgot to take a picture...

KB refueled and returning to the West Coast. Will arrive 13 hexes away and see if he spots me. He probably will given the number of subs in the area.

Upgraded my last Sentai of Nick A models. 5 sqdrns of them, but one is perm. restricted...

Got another fleet carrier today....

Spotted a large troop convoy heading south west from Noumea...

Lowpe -> RE: Bakersfield (11/10/2015 4:53:42 PM)

June 6th, 1942

Attacks along the Angkang road prove productive once again. An important part of the attacks now include strafing Nicks which causes the defending infantry to use up even more supply.

Hijinks in India....

The Tank Unit in the far north got bombed heavily, but they still routed a British unit at 3-1 odds.

IJA is trying to catch those five units; while the Allies send a 15 unit force to save them.

Allied CA/CL/DD retreat this day...

Did you see them "turn away" at the very end of the air combat? I see that sometimes once CAP gets in amongst the bombers.

Lowpe -> RE: Bakersfield (11/12/2015 4:52:41 PM)

Big day in India...

Allies bombard Chittagong with 4 old Battleships. I fled with all my forces that could, and tried to set up a trap.

So far all the ships fled successfully to Akyab, and the BBs bombarded Chitt with no opposition and are now spotted scattered within Nell range.

Over on the West Coast we inflict 110+ hits.

Lowpe -> RE: Bakersfield (11/12/2015 4:54:20 PM)

More aerial damage for no losses basically.

Lowpe -> Clash of the Battleships (11/12/2015 5:12:26 PM)

I figured, thanks to search and failed strike last turn, that Jocke has concentrated his fleet and I was not disappointed.

I decided not to fight on his terms and fled with everything I could. I put up a large fighter umbrella at Akyab to protect the Kongo, the Haruna, 5 CA, 1 CL and destroyers. Only a few ships were left at Chitt...those moving from pierside to ready status.

Unfortunately, the Allies used their carriers in a defensive posture, bombarded Chitt with 4 old girls, kept the POW and Repulse for combat and really laid one heck of a bombardment on Chitt.

All IJN ships made Akyab without hitting mines, the Jintsu did take a shell hit but looks ok for now.

I had a good counterstrike setup, but the weather was lousy.

Lowpe -> RE: Clash of the Battleships (11/12/2015 5:15:50 PM)

So, what does this endeavor tell me about Jocke? He is concentrating his ships, so I released two days ago all the cruisers and one battleship into isolating Australia that I can muster. They are going deep, deep into enemy waters.

Off northwestern Oz an heading deep.

Lowpe -> RE: Clash of the Battleships (11/12/2015 5:18:37 PM)

Leaving Rabaul.

Normally, I wouldn't send a BB, but there is a strong Allied Cruiser squadron here somewhere.

I will break the fleets down when they are closer to their patrolling grounds.

Lowpe -> RE: Clash of the Battleships (11/12/2015 5:24:10 PM)

At pierside, the Jintsu took a hit but not really life threatening if I can get her out.

Lowpe -> RE: Clash of the Battleships (11/12/2015 5:35:21 PM)

A very nice positive victory point day for Japan.

A deliberate attack here knocked the forts down a level.

The crack 14th arrives, soon ground attacks will begin at Clark which is out of ammo from the lack of AA firing.

Lowpe -> RE: Clash of the Battleships (11/12/2015 5:43:53 PM)

Across the river, in the mountains is one Chinese Corp and a HQ. I have been hitting them with planes, and will soon shock across the road -- probably in 5 days.

[image]local://upfiles/44178/AC28E69BB76049C58E7E353C15B0BBF7.jpg[/image]

Lowpe -> RE: Clash of the Battleships (11/12/2015 5:49:56 PM)

8-10 days I will start on the Oscar IIa. Not a really important plane due to lack of squadrons; however, just think of all those juicy factories cranking away day in day out down thru the rest of the Oscar line.

If you wait until your large SC TF is nearer to Australia, then you will get what you have as TF leaders. Check your large warship leaders now to ensure you get good TF leaders once you break up the big TF.
