ny59giants -> RE: Yorktown! Ouch! (11/15/2015 7:50:58 PM)

By passed Luzon: The negative would be a forward base with about 50k in fuel at Manila to operate subs from. I would try to keep or sneak in a small AS to a by passed base to reload some torpedoes.

Jocke did use Manilla as a sub base...I manged to sink 3 subs there in port I believe. Of course, I damaged the repair yards slightly too.

So... it seems that the supposed opportunity cost of sending the 14th Army to PH and not to Luzon is pretty much zero. From now on this will be a standard phase 1 gambit for me.

I think you can pretty much take Luzon at your leisure no matter what.

Lowpe -> RE: Clash of the Battleships (11/16/2015 1:40:31 PM)

KB and most of the mini KB are at Pearl Harbor. I have a CV and a CVE at Singers.

I need to think some about upgrades on the Carriers.Do I pause to upgrade? Or do I keep them in action?

Radar is such a boon to a carrier force...and the big battles will come in the fourth quarter of 1942.

PaxMondo -> RE: Clash of the Battleships (11/16/2015 1:43:45 PM)

radar on escorts, which is easier to schedule, works the same. its the total radar of the TF that matters ....

Lowpe -> RE: Clash of the Battleships (11/16/2015 3:33:53 PM)

Thanks Pax.[&o]

Here is a look at how well the IJAAF bombers are softening up the Chinese troops, some of which are moving.

I want this road junction.[;)]

Lowpe -> RE: Clash of the Battleships (11/16/2015 3:36:17 PM)

Some Nicks down low.

I had wanted to use my Nicks sweeping the Allies in India, but Jocke really relies upon AA to protect bases and not fighters.

So I sent a squadron to terrorize the Chinese.

Lowpe -> RE: Clash of the Battleships (11/16/2015 6:07:39 PM)

Two days have gone by, and I can't find the Yorktown...[:(]

My raiders off western Oz, almost at the maps edge have found 6 ships heading east at 14 knots. Investigating.

Success on the Angkang road! Yahoo! Chinese had two decent corps there and a HQ, but heavy bombing and no time to build forts did the defense in, which did have supplies.

Moving the bombers around a little, hitting airfields, and reinforcements moving to the front.

A few divebombers here....all miss. Severe storms...

Luzon...first bombardment.[:)]

Lokasenna -> RE: Clash of the Battleships (11/16/2015 7:34:37 PM)

Did you do the Shokakus in April? If so, put 1 in each KB TF (if you have 2) for the radar. Otherwise yes, look at escorts for radar.

Lowpe -> RE: Clash of the Battleships (11/16/2015 9:21:27 PM)

Today the Oscar IIa starts production.[:)] 7 size 30 factories and 1 20(10) are researching the Oscar IIb which just advanced a month. They will start production in July and is has plenty of squadrons.

4 Squadrons upgrade to the IIa and they are from Oscar Ib and Ic squadrons. I will upgrade one tomorrow...

So the Oscar IIb is the important upgrade since so many squadrons fly this plane. Then it will be on to the latter models. I haven't done the math, but I should get the Oscar III and IV very early.

But the Oscar IIa makes a great light bomber...two 250kg bomb, fly from small airfields.

It is important to get some good Army fighters, to take the load off the Zero. However, it will be a while before I get any Army fighters with cannons. Tony will come probably two months early but with very limited squadrons. The Tojo IIb with big honking cannons will get here sooner and I am looking forward to flying this guy.

Lowpe -> RE: Clash of the Battleships (11/17/2015 4:41:30 PM)

India:

I see a real opportunity here...Jocke seems determined to fight forward and not give up Calcutta. But other than Calcutta he is hurting for air bases.

I just unloaded two more tank regiments and some Naval Guards. In addition, about 18K supply unloaded with another 40K enroute.

Currently, I don't really have enough troops (or supplies) to take advantage of the very favorable troop dispositions here. Pity.[:(]

However, a deliberate attack today at Manila shows forts level 0 and no supply. There is the better part of three divisions at Manila and artillery. Do I have enough time to use them offensively in India and still not give up on my West Coast invasion? Originally, I figured those troops would be there for another 2-3 months.

But on the other hand, will I need a West Coast invasion if I can pocket 120K Commonwealth troops and overrun India?

If I did cut off all those troops in Calcutta what would Jocke do? Hunker down? Breakout?

I need to think this through quickly, as time is running out![;)]

Your readers demand a West Coast invasion! [:D]

Lowpe -> RE: Clash of the Battleships (11/17/2015 4:50:44 PM)

A huge amount of the Chinese Army cut off. I will try to estimate the amount of supplies he generates in this area...but the Angkang drive has be wildly successful.

I thought that might be the reaction![:D]

However, I am pointing out perhaps an easier way to accomplish victory for Japan.

Lowpe -> RE: Clash of the Battleships (11/17/2015 4:57:07 PM)

Allies are looking to set up a Cap Trap....

Withe the KB no longer splitting the Allied air defenses, he is free to concentrate here. There is another 37 fighters at Edmonton.

I believe the Tojo IIa are flying into Annette Island today (at least 28 of them).

ny59giants -> RE: Clash of the Battleships (11/17/2015 4:57:11 PM)

American Construction Engineers - The Allies are hard pressed when it comes to their SeaBees and other construction units until May 42 when the first ones come in. However, by Sept they will be swimming in these units. [:)] So, it will take about two months to get there from Southern California - Eastern USA - Cape Town - India.

Lowpe -> RE: Clash of the Battleships (11/17/2015 5:03:58 PM)

A nice improvement over the Oscar Ib & Ic. Soon I will have 4 squadrons flying these guys, and then onto the Oscar IIb next month.

One last note, heavy volume of Radio traffic detected at Sydney...I suspect the Yorktown made it home eluding my subs.[&:]

That mountain hex north of Ankang is one of the most important in China. I once did the calculations and IIRC the northeastern part of China generates around 100 tons of supplies per day. A large part of the Chinese Army is now irrelevant. Not only that, heavy industry in the southern part is cut off from its fuel source. [&o]

Lowpe -> RE: Clash of the Battleships (11/17/2015 6:50:50 PM)

Thanks, Olorin!. I agree taking this particular mountain hex, after only 1 battle really makes me feel good in China.

I figure Jocke is gnashing his teeth over it....he has such a defeatist view of China it is good to make his doubts become reality.[:D]

That Fuel never flows very well anyway.

Lowpe -> RE: Clash of the Battleships (11/17/2015 9:13:23 PM)

Darn it. I think I just clicked into Joc's by mistake -- we are adjacent on the board. Clicked out fast though, so no harm done.

Do you mean the fuel doesn't flow well for the Chinese, Lok? Been so long since I played Allies I can't remember...

Lowpe -> RE: Clash of the Battleships (11/17/2015 9:28:10 PM)

A look at my late 42 Fighters....

The Tony, I am thinking, will go to the SRA and or Burma/India.

Fuel from Urumchi is pretty much stuck up there, but is it the same with Lanchow?
